2 weeks ago i bought the Xt910 GSM (Italy), updated to 2.3.6 with OTA and 2 days ago i rooted it with this guide: http://droidrazrroot.com/droid-razr-root/how-to-root-your-droid-razr-android-2-3-66-12-173/
i come from a ZTE Blade, where I installed clockwork recovery. I'd like to install recovery on the Xt910 as well, do a backup of the system and then start installing custom roms. But I am a total noob to RAZR and I couldn't find any sticky/thread to clear my doubts:
what is the difference between bootmenu, bootstrap and safestrap? what do i want to install to make a backup of the system and then start installing custom ICS/JB roms?
If I want to install Bootmenu, I'd follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792955 but it says "You have to be on ICS 4.0.4 to follow this Guide", and I am 2.3.6. how do I update to ICS before installing Bootmenu?
I was thinking to keep the original rom on 1st system and install the custom rom on 2nd system (if i correctly understood). thanks ahead for the answers
edit: damn posted in the wrong section -_- sorry I had so many opened tabs and didn't check..
If you want to flash the KeXec JB Roms, you have to use Safestrap XT910.
If you want to flash regular ICS Custom Roms you should use BootMenu.
Unfortunately on Safestrap XT910 I can only boot KeXec Roms. Regular Roms won't boot for me.
You find an How to for both Recovery's in Dev Section. BM is sticked and for Safestrap you have to look a bit.
BTW: KeXec is an Bootloader-Bypass to run Custom Kernels on our locked RazR.
You can easy switch between these 2 Recovery's. Just uninstall the one you don't need and install the other.
Safestrap: Open App in Non Safe Side and hit the uninstall Button.
BM: Is shown in the Safestrap How to

thanks for the clear answer. I think this is the Safestrap's thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30569963
I think I will go for BM, but as you said I can change my mind quite easily I have one question remaining:
I'd like to: make a backup of my system -> install OTA ICS -> make another backup -> install custom ROMs.
But how do i make the first backup if I am on 2.3.6 (with root) and both BM and SS require ICS?
Flash the EU Fastbootfiles for ICS. You don't need an GB Backup, because you can't restore it anyway after ICS. No way back to GB

Thank you again. I succesfully installed ICS first with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1747800 (using RSD Lite 5.7), then i updated the ROM with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1755764 (I wiped data between ICS and update installation).
Now I will proceed installing BootMenu, making a backup copy and then start installing ustom roms

Ok, so after reading through several threads, I just wanna make sure I have it right before I screw up my razr =)
Right now, I'm rooted, running the Razrx custom ROM using Safestrap. So if I want to remove Safestrap recovery and Safestrap itself and go back to my true stock system (which I did make a back up of and dual booted into Razrx Rom) and then un-root, I would need to do the following, correct?
1. Re-boot into recovery and disable safe-system and re-boot (which will boot me onto my primary true stock system)
2. Enter the Safestrap app and click "uninstall recovery"
3. Go into "applications" in my settings and uninstall safestrap apk
4. Un-root using one of the various methods out there (probably Mattlegroff's moto utility).
Do I basically have this right? Any input is greatly appreciated....

Hi All
I have a GSM Razr running on rooted GB 2.3.6, with stock recovery. I plan to flash it with Retail.en.EU ICS Leak 672.180.33, which needs to be done using stock recovery. My question is that I believe J Y Daddy's CWM can be flashed on the Razrs, does that mean I will lose stock recovery if this is done? I believe that you can only have one Recovery either CWM or Stock.
Thx in anticipation.
You won't be able to update to ICS with CWM/bootstrapper (at least it didn't work for me). Easiest way to do it:
1. Run everything stock
2. Root
3. Voodoo backup your root (temp unroot)
2. Update to ICS
5. Recover root
6. Install CWM on boot for ICS (Google it)
7. You've now got CWM on boot + ICS however you may need to remove CWM in the future for the next OTA (which is a easy process)
Another option is to install safestrap, which allows for easy installation and uninstallation compared to cwm/bootstrapper. A lot safer system-wise and basically the same features as cwm/bootstrapper
Thx for the step by step upgrade xXxTehxXx, much appreciated.
I read that on GSM RAZRs, Safestrap cannot be installed due to partition limitations on the filesystems. There's more space available on CDMA RAZRs.

This is not true. I have a GSM Razr , and I m using SafeStrap 3.05.
Just bough a china retail GSM RAZR MAXX XT910. Came with Gingebread, updated to ICS 4.0.4, however it was and still is full of useless Chinese apps some of which is can't uninstall. Biggest problem is that I can not get Google Play, no matter what I do, it gets installed but keeps crashing on launch.
I contacted Motorola UK support (I live in UK) and here is the replay I got: "We are sorry to inform you that if your phone is a Chinese unit, it can only load Chinese software and it is not possible to modify it. We would like to advise you against rooting your modifying your device since the warranty would be voided."
So since there is no official way to get UK stock ICS I decided to root and install custom ROM/stock UK ROM, but to no avail. The phone fails to root and I have tried many different softwares. I am about to try Matt's razr utility.
I'm not sure that it will work and if it does, what is the specific process here? What do I do after rooting the phone?
Has anyone else had similar problems? Found a way to successfully root their china retail?
Thanks
Don't try Matts Utility,It's for XT912 From Verizon if I'm not wrong.
It seems like you have upgraded to an ICS Leak and not the official ICS.
Official ICS includes gapps (Google Apps, and yes Google Play is among them, without gapps Google play wont run).
So you got 2 options from here on:
1.Install the original ICS from China (Fastboot file flashing)
2.Root your rom, install some custom recover (like BootMenu,Bootstrap or CWM),and flash gapps from there.
Edit:
Here are the Fastboot files:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721771
Click the thanks button if i helped .
IS that possible? I upgraded from the settings, about phone, software update, so I thought it would be official. I'm going to try installing the fastboot files you linked, it doesn't require root, does it? If this doesn't work, i'll post.
Thanks

i'd say, stay with chinese ICS, it's great.
root it, install a custom recovery (bootmenu or CWM).
download GAPPS package here, and install it through custom recovery.
and you can use titanium backup to unistall unneeded chinese apps

I'm having problems rooting the phone, and the link above doesn't even open. Is it the 1.8 matt's razr utility?
How do install the GAPPS? Not sure what custom recovery means... I can get google play, install it right now it just crashes after launch. WIll it work if the phone is rooted?
Another question: How to check for root? I know this is a stupid question but I used eternity project rooting tool and it said the phone is rooted, but when I turn it off, go into fastboot, is says: Device is locked. Does it mean it's not rooted?
Thanks
I managed to flash the stock ICS and root, now I need to install custom recovery to install Gapps. This is where my problem is, no matter what I try (bootmenu, CWM, etc, the phone only boots into stock android recovery (<3e>). Any way around this?
If you are using bootmenu, just use its widget to reboot into custom recovery.

Can you link a download of the bootmenu apk? I can't get it from play store since it's not installed which is rather ironic because I need bootmenu to install it...
Ah, yeah...
Try ask Whirleyes in his bootmenu thread. I'm sure he'll help.
Ok, installed BootMenu apk, now trying to download BootMenu Package but it stops after about 60% with an corrupted file error...
What to do?
Ok, disregard the previous post, solved everything, got the Chinese ICS, installed GAPPS using bootmenu, works perfectly.
Thanks for the help
Hi all!
I have a question that might sound stupid but i wanna make sure i don't mess anything up.
This is what i have: Motorola RAZR XT910 GSM
Retail.en.EU ICS Leak 672.180.33 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737875 updated to 676.226.3.en.EU from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1755764
Rooted with this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710871
and the make it last script from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1723259
I want to wipe everything, go back to Retail.en.EU ICS Leak 672.180.33 then install the update, root my razr, apply the battery script and restore my apps with Titanium Backup but I don't want to get the leftovers from apps that are not installed in my device anymore.
What are the steps that i need to follow?
Do i have to unroot my phone first and then flash .33 with RSD Lite?
How can i restore with Titanium Backup only the apps that i currently have on my device?
Hey guys,
So I have this XT910 which I haven't used for some time now, but I want to give it a new life. I want to put a nightly CM of Lollipop on it, but I need the newest Safestrap in order to do that.
I tried installing it, and the app says it is installed, yet it still remains to be 3.11. I cannot seem to uninstall 3.11, also because I overwrote my Stock ROM a long time ago.
I have an European XT910 (Netherlands) but can't find the original ROM OR fastboot files to flash with RSDLite, also because EternityProject/Goo.IM are offline.
Does someone have a solution for me? It would be appreciated!

You have here everything you need
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3023837
You have some rom on stock, right?
It doesn't matter which rom is it...
Install that old version of SS that you have,
Open it,
Choose uninstall recovery,
Uninstall SS app,
Install new SS 3.75,
Open it,
Choose install recovery,
That's it...

You need to install old safestrap app in stock slot, open app, uninstall recovery, then uninstall the app, then install new safestrap app.
If any of those steps fail, you need to reflash stock firmware with rsd lite

Thanks guys! My RSDlite wasn't working on Windows 8, so I switched to my Windows 7 PC, found a fastboot file and installed a Stock ROM. Now it works! THanks.
