Software Update - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I received a message about a software update this morning. Foolishly, I downloaded the update without thinking. It's not that I was going to root or anything, I'm content at the moment.
When I tried using the dedicated camera button, it wouldn't work. Then an error report notification came up and I sent the error report. The camera button works sometimes. When I was taking pictures, I tried the rapid-fire picture taking and it didn't work and also gave me an error report, which I sent. The rapid-fire now works sometimes too. I'm not sure what's happening.
It seems like they changed Task Manager too. Now it shows Available and Total. Did it used to show Used and Available? I can't remember. The items listed are now in bold. If I end all the tasks, I usually get to around 400 MB available out of 1024 MB it says. What could be using up all this memory?
Have you guys run into anything with the update? I just wanted to have a discussion about it.

You may need to factory reset. If there were any glitches in the download, it will screw up your phone, like your camera, but a factory reset should fix it. I did the update last week then factory reset. My camera is functioning properly. I cannot speak on the task mgr as I don't really use it.

Thanks for the info. I can't remember, will factory reset delete my texts, pictures, apps, etc.?

It will not delete pics in your gallery if they are saved on your SD card. I recommended My Backup Pro to save your apps. 3rd party messaging apps often have back up and restore functions or you can use SMS Backup to back texts up to your email.

OK got me on that one...it does not erase SD card

Ok, I'll backup everything first.

If you've enabled google wallet, be sure to reset that from within the app, too

Good point, we still don't know if that issue has been completely resolved yet

I don't use Google Wallet, but I cleared all data from Settings.
I think I'm going to back up everything to a microSD card and whatever apps and then reset. I'll see if it fixes things for me. Is there anything else I should be aware of? Maybe I'll root after resetting. I'll look into that.

Regawmod has finally been updated and makes it all easier. I would still recommend unlocking the manual way because it requires extra steps that makes things a little easier to understand. Some people are getting stuck in loops and the only way to fix is to fastboot but since regawmod handles everything they don't have the adb tools package or how to use it

Did the factory reset fix your camera button issue?

I ordered a micro SD card and I'll backup my stuff when I get it. Everything is fine atm.

Hi,
I had not rooted or unlocked my phone. I decided to do it but that was after I took the update . Well I found out I cannot get s-off now. I was able to unlock and root with Regawmod. I had to manually put it into recovery a few times but it works great.

Okay, so I have restored all my apps, data, and text messages after the factory reset. It seems that Sense doesn't like remembering my Home settings. MyBackup Pro didn't backup Android Home perfectly so I redid my Home screen. I have apps arranged into groups and I removed all the other panels so that I only have one panel. When I restarted my phone, the other panels were still there and the groups of apps weren't there. I created my own Scene and restarted and it' been fine. I haven't gotten any error reports or anything.

Best way to backup and restore in Titanium Backup?

With updates of ROMs being released so quickly, and not wanting to update rather than flash the full ROM, I'm going to start backing up using Titanium Backup.
I am quite happy to backup absolutely everything, but am cautious about restoring things like system settings. Ideally what I would like is to be able to restore all the apps that I had before, their data, and possibly the layout of my homescreens.
How would I do this?
Is there anything I should probably not restore that could mess things up?
Thanks a lot for any replies.
You can backup all apps and data and then restore them later, without worrying about side-effects. This backup will include your launcher and therefore screen layouts, but will not include widgets. You'll need to add them again manually after you restore (it's a permission thing - nothing other that your is allowed to put widgets on your home screens).
System settings is a different story. If you're going from one ROM to another, or changing FW, there could be conflicts and it could cause problems. I tend to always have a backup and only restore system settings if I need to factory reset for some reason.
If you haven't already, I'd strongly recommend paying for the pro version, as it can become very boring having to click a couple of buttons for every app you want to restore. The pro version does all apps without the need for interaction.
The easiest way is this: go into titanium backup and press the menu bitten on your phone. Then press batch. Then look for something that says backup all user apps. Click the bitten next to that that says run. Then check 'backup user apps + data' and then uncheck any apps you don't want backed up, and then click run on the bottom. This will backup all your downloaded apps and data, like saved games, etc. You can also do the same things for system apps, but I can't guarantee that they will all work. Hope this helps

If you click batch all your apps are selected so you can backup all your apps with 1 clicks, even with the unpaid version. However with the paid version you can set up scheduled backups so it will backup automatically every week, or whenever you set it to

Thanks XD) but I'm talking more about the restore aspect.
@johncmolyneux
Thanks for your help. So I'm thinking the process will be along the lines of:
backup/restore > batch > backup all user apps
then
batch > restore missing apps with data > selecting app+ data
I will almost certainly buy the pro version of this app, as I'll be using it a lot.
One thing I am particularly anal about is restoring my vast collection of texts going back about 3 years - will restoring the GoSMS app and its data include all these. Probably obvious but I thought I'd ask just to make sure.
Also, I keep getting a message saying that I should check usb debugging as it might cause problems. What's that all about?
Thanks again.

That's the process mate - you've got it.
Titanium Backup requires that you have USB debugging enabled, which you get to via Settings, Applications, Development.
As for backing up and restoring text messages, I simply could not recommend any higher an application called SMS Backup+ (free in the Market). It creates a folder in your Gmail account and automatically uploads all text messages to that folder. You can do a restore whenever you like. It's seamless and works perfectly. If you want to keep SMS then look no further! I've gone over easily 30 ROM flashes with it, and now a new phone, and have never lost a single message.
It also means, of course, that you can access you SMS from any browser, which is nice (Can't send from gmail though.)

Ok so one last question. I understand that Titanium Backup will save the data for my third party launcher, so will preserver all the homescreen arrangments. But if I use TouchWiz, would that count as a system and therefore not preserved if I only backed up and restored user apps and data?
Cheers.

You might be able to backup and restore the data for touchwizz, not tried.
As far as system data, if the item is green in titanium is ok to restore, if its red, beware.
AFAIK, TouchWiz is just another launcher, so you should be okay to restore, but pay attention to the item colour, as mentioned by veyka.
Ok thanks a lot. Man of many questions at the moment, quite new to Android.

When I set up the OS from scratch after a flash, when I get the option to either backup/restore to my Google account, what actually gets backed up then?

I'm not sure about this one as I've seen different things happen. Sometimes, I've had apps installed again after a new ROM flash, but other times that hasn't happened. I've also had inconsistent results with restoring wifi settings. The only thing I generally rely on Google to store is my contacts. Other than that, I use Titanium for everything, just to be sure.

Hi
I flashed the ParanoidAndroid 2.55cm (4.1.2):
I have Apex launcher pro and Titanium Backup ★ root pro.I made a TB backup in cm9 . I restored all of apps and data and it went well on ParanoidAndroid 2.55cm (4.1.2):. But
I would like to know how to restore all the widgets on ParanoidAndroid 2.55cm with Apex launcher pro home screens ?

Did a full wipe..

And boom, this baby is faster. It was weird, apps would load pretty slow, internet browsing SUCKED, general slowness and battery drain and whatnot. Now, it's SUPER fast. Everything works great, except my shortcut keys for the dock, which is weird. But even the battery last so much longer. I was able to do root again, then did voodoo rootkeeper. Then I installed titanium backup (after moving the folder off the SD card along with whatever else you want to keep) and restored the apps, but app only, not data (except for a few key ones). It seemed to work for the most part and this baby works like a charm. I had 3.2 and updated to 4.0 so maybe a wipe is something you might consider if you're TF is feeling slow, even in performance mode.
Thanks. Helpful for me because I've been considering doing the same thing after the. 19 update that's supposed to be coming. I feel like all of the past updates which were more designed for bug fixes have been putting more of a damper on the performance. With this upcoming update, it looks like they are now actually focusing on features and user experience, so I want to make sure that I don't associate those 'improvements' with lackluster behavior I've noticed since a couple updates ago.
For the first time ever, I experienced 3 random reboots in the same day a couple days ago. I hugged Optimus and told it not to worry. Everything will be okay.

Pretty much. It's a factory reset. It's a real pain because you have to reinstall everything from scratch.
UNLESS you have root and a good backup utility like Titanium Backup.
Then you wipe, get root (back), install Titanium, and restore you system settings, apps, and data.
I am going to take the chance on posting this and getting flamed because people already know, if you don't know I would appreciate the thanks.
Titanium is great for keeping important data but a better and easier way to get a real fresh start after wipe is appbrain.
Do Titanium full backup
install appbrain and fast web install
sync
login to appbrain online and rename your prime list to old
wipe/factory reset
reinstall appbrain and fast web install be sure to enable fast web install
sync
log in to your appbrain account and copy the apps from old to your new device
open appbrain on device
sync
install
watch a movie while all your apps download without needing you
restore data from titanium where needed, restore programs that are not in the market
????
profit
The difference here is that you don't restore any corrupted programs from Titanium
Doesn't anyone know how the built-in ASUS app backup works? Is it affected by the factory reset?

I'm going to say it does, since it wipes the SD card. But if you put a microSD or regular SD you should be able to save to that instead, then restore from that after. It might be as good as Titanium, or app brain, I think part of the key is not restoring data, apps only.

Works a treat. I used it. The only thing is if savedata (like levels in games) is saved on sd, you are going to loose it. But it can be always manually copied. Any other app which saves logins and such in /data (i think it's /data will be fine). And no root needed.
To OP, done it before. No difference. My TFP never been sluggish, just suffers from occasional browser freeze, well, more than occasional, and reboots when certain apps fc. Wipe didn't fix that.

Lol yeah, you can re-download your apps It keeps up with everything you pay for and even with most of the free stuff you install. Easier route may be to use ASUS's App Backup or if you're rooted Titanium Backup (Pro is worth it).

Asus backup looks fairly simple. Just open the app, then choose the apps you want to backup. There is a check for data only or data and application near the top right. Choose data and app if you want both, but for some reason you can only do 600MB, not sure why. But if you have it under that (I unchecked all my games and got it low enough) then you can hit the backup button on the top, which then has a (Checkbox) option to also save to the microsd or SD card plugged in
ic. Very informative.
Haven't played with the SD slot on the Prime so I guess I have a reason now =)
You also have an option to save a copy to the MicroSD, card if it's mounted. I'm in the process of a wipe now and will let you know about the restore using the ASUS backup. I've used TB in the past but haven't rooted this unit yet and so can only speak to the ASUS backup.

To be just a little more precise, the ASUS backup app creates a file in the ASUS folder that can be copied to a PC, USB drive, to the cloud, or whatever, and then copied back to the same folder when the wipe is done. Then apps and data can be selectively restored. Works well.

Two Questions... Phone book & App Backup

I I was wondering if there are any programs where I could do GREAT backups.
Mainly 1 for phonebook, so that I can safely copy all my contacts and modify them from the computer. I have like 300 numbers but want to erase 200 of them while still having them on computer if I need them. I can't find a reliable app to do this so am wondering if anyone has any experiences in it.
The 2nd backup I'm looking for is an APP one. It doesn't hve to necessarily backup the apps, but at least be able to queue all of them I want RE-installed and download them all from the google play store or something. I want to get into flashing ROMS, but I have like 7 pages of apps already that I don't want to lose, as I'm still sorting through trying to find the ones that work best for me so I can remove all the extras.
First off, I think these could've been answered by searching, so please do that in the future.
If your contacts are stored as Google contacts (as they should be), you can edit them from GMail. On the top left corner of the page, there is a menu that says "GMail." Click it and select "Contacts." I've found this to be the easiest way. It'll also always backup your contacts, and you can restore old versions of your contact list if you need to do so. (Since you talk about wanting to delete them from the phone, but keep a record of them, if you delete them from GMail and remember the date when you had them all in there, you can always restore it back to that date and they'll all be back.)
Also, from the People app, you can go to Menu -> Manage Contacts, and export the data.
Regarding backing up apps, this is the main reason I don't think you've done any research at all. There's a very-well-talked-about app called Titanium Backup that will backup and restore every app on your phone. You have to buy the key for it to restore all of them without your involvement--the free version requires you to give permissions to install each app.
First off, I did search prior to asking the question and could not find what I was looking for. There is no need to be rude, as searching was obviously the first step anyone would or at least SHOULD take before asking such a question.
As for your replies, I have chosen sync in my contacts, but they will not show up in Google for some reason. I've tried tons of ways, and it shows like it is syncing, but when I check... nothing there. I don't know if something is wrong in my settings or what, but I've tried many times... it just won't work for me for some reason. Maybe it's because I have 6 google accounts attached to phone, and even though I'm only syncing 1, it is mixing them up or something.
And I already have Titanium Backup, it keeps crashing on my phone for some reason, which is why I was looking for an alternative. I have over 300 apps on my phone right now. I know that's horrid, but I downloaded a ton of them for the same things so I can test them and find the ones I liked best, in which I plan to mark them all, re-flash the phone with whatever ROM (later once full rooting with S-off and everything has been tested more thoroughly), and only install those apps I liked, which should bring it down to maybe 100 apps or so.
I do understand I might SEEM like I didn't search, but trust me... I did.
Anyways, I thank you for your response (both the neg and the pos), and your time was greatly appreciated. I am about to toy with my settings and see if something is blocking the sync or something. I didn't know you could export from the people app though, so thanks for that especially.
UPDATE:
Man, thanks! That export feature is NICE! going to see how easy it is to modify it shortly, hopefully it's readable in Excel.
Regarding Titanium Backup, you are rooted and have granted Titanium Backup superuser permissions, correct?
Yes, I used that 1 click .bat file (from the first method that was shown). I think my superuser app was corrupt, so I re-downloaded it and it's working fine now. Thank you.

I agree, all contacts should be on google...then theres no worry about backups (ive had 3 android phones and a tablet and they all auto sync the contacts instantly).
Editing them on the computer is a breeze, the duplicate find/merge feature is simple and works very well.
What exactly are you all doing to make them sync though?
I went to Accounts & Sync
> selected the one GMAIL that I want the numbers synced to and hit sync now, but it doesn't do anything.

Help! I tried restoring 'Contact/Calls' now I get repeating error!

I have a rooted Evo LTE on the factory ROM and everything has been fine... until just now. I decided I wanted to recover my call log from my Evo 4G backup via Titanium Backup. Now, after a reboot, I get a popup that says:
"android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Would you like to send an error report to HTC? This will help us improve our products."
The problem is that when I click 'Don't Send' it goes away but then pops up again less than a second later. It literally will continue over and over again w/o any end in sight. My phone is bork and I don't know how to un-bork it at this point. Sometimes I wish life had an 'undo' option as I don't even really care that much about my call log. I was just trying to get fancy I guess.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as my phone is pretty much useless at the moment.
I was able to navigate back to 'contacts/calls' within Titanium Backup between popups and click freeze. It froze and I no longer get those popups but I now get"
'Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped'
In addition to this I assume that my phone, contacts or something also doesn't work now that I've frozen 'Call/Contacts' but now maybe at least I can delete and restore this file with a proper working one?? Anyone??
Did you accidentally restore the Contacts/Calls application instead of the list?
You could have just synced the contacts to your gmail account on the OG EVO and they would have synced automatically on the LTE.

It wasn't the contacts I was after. All of my contacts are sync'd to Google so with the new phone I had all my contacts after logging into Google. I was just trying to restore my call log from my previous phone when all this began.
That Titanium Backup item is data only. Go back to Titanium to that line item, unfreeze, then wipe data. You should be good to go. Then maybe reboot to make sure there are no more force closes.
Edit: Actually, I may be wrong. There could be an apk with that as well. What I said above is still worth a shot, though. If it doesn't work you will have to find a way to restore that apk. Are you running a custom ROM?

That's the weird part was I thought that I did just restore the data. I'm about 97% sure that's what I selected in fact. I figured it would leave the app as is and then restore the data and bam! I'd have my call log. That's not the case. Clearing data from Titanium Backup was going to be my next step but didn't want to bork things any further. If you're saying it's safe to do I will attempt that.

No, like I said in the OP I've rooted a stock Evo LTE and that's all. Nothing else has been done.
Reboot into recovery (vol up + vol down + power and as soon as the phone powers off, let go of vol up) and fix permissions.

No, like I said in the OP I've rooted a stock Evo LTE and that's all. Nothing else has been done.

Oops... you did say that in the OP. My bad. Yeah, wiping data should be perfectly safe with any app, user or system, so that seems like a good next step. Let us know how you make out.

Reboot into recovery (vol up + vol down + power and as soon as the phone powers off, let go of vol up) and fix permissions.

Good idea, but it doesn't sound like the OP has a custom recovery installed.

Unfroze and immediately got popups again. Between them I was able to clear the data for it and they quit. No rebooting to see if everything is good to go once again.

No, no recovery because I wasn't doing anything crazy.... so I thought.
OP...please post your question in the correct place. Your thread has been moved to the HTC EVO 4G LTE Q&A section.

So far so good. I think this fixed the problem so I'll see if it remains fixed.

Great news.
Good news. My advice would be to flash TWRP now though. Being rooted without having a custom recovery is mighty dangerous.

I agree and I need to. I need to unlock my bootloader first and I started the process but didn't have the files I needed at like step 8 or whatever it was. I guess I'll try harder to find what I need when I get some more time.
In case anyone is curious, the problem exists because you have a Facebook friend that has a birthday on February 29th. Either remove the Facebook friend or don't sync calendar data from Facebook. You will need to clear the data first and then re-sync contacts and live feed for it to work. Hope this helps. This is a bug that HTC needs to fix.

Holy blast from the past. The issue has long since been corrected.

Question Spy/malware removal

Is there any kind that actually works? I keep fishing around on Google play and everything is either old, doesn't work, or is full of sh*t, or a combination of all 3.
Welcome to XDA
If you're running Android 9 or higher simply do a factory reset. There are no known rootkits that can worm out of the user partition, once that data is wiped so is the malware.
Don't reload it again after the factory reset.

Thank you for the welcome. Sorry bout the late reply. I don't suppose there's another way is there? Im literally fresh out the box, I've never done a factory reset.

You're welcome. The other way is to find the malware and delete it completely.

Which would be how? Would I need a app or something for the pc? And if so do you have any recommendations? I have the mixsilver file manager on my phone (pixel 6 "Not pro"). Would there be a way I could find it thru there? Also my device is not rooted. So would I need to root? I'm sorry if this gets on your nerves. If so tell me, won't hurt my feelings. I'm literally a noob at this stuff. I've been trying to teach myself and just do trial and error but im getting in over my head and don't wanna accidentally brick my phone or worse.
What makes you sure you have spy/malware? Or do you mean adware?
Cheers
Tom
With Avast or AVG Antivirus you can do a pretty good scan of your apps, even system apps if you want.
For Factory reset see here https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/4596836
or go here on a PC (you need your Pixel connected by usb to the PC then): https://pixelrepair.withgoogle.com/carrier_selection

Chrome ****tin out 3 gigs of data a day. I have unlimited so it's not that big of a deal but still.....and some of the options I had in settings like "permissions, enable/disable, clear data/cache" that I know for a fact I had not too long ago are now greyed out or nonexistent. Also sometimes when I bring up "location" thru the settings menu everything is supposed to be "off" but there's 2 or 3 that look like they are switching back to say "off" as soon as the page shows. 1 of them outright takes several seconds to display any "on or off" setting at all. I've found a "Verizon" system app on my phone, some kind of Samsung telephony thing. And it seems like I can input a change to settings or something and when I look at my phone in the morning everything I had set up is back to it's previous settings.

Thank you. Umm.....stupid question but I've never done a full reset before so.....how and would I need to move my apps to another storage or could I just go back thru the play store and redownload? And any paid apps and subscriptions?
It probably explains all that in those links doesn't it?
Just do factory reset and you are okay.. Then start using phone as new..

For what it's worth, the Verizon system app comes with the phone in case you use a Verizon sim.
If you end up clean flashing or factory resetting, I would not restore any apps from backups. I would reinstall everything fresh or you could just be putting the malware back on your phone, if that indeed is what you have.

Just redownload them. Google remembers your bought apps or subscriptions in your Google account, so as long as you use the same email/account for logging in to Playstore after Factory reset you're good.
Your contacts normally are also synced to your Google Account, so you get them back also then.

It comes with the phone by default just in case you do use Verizon. Basically that app helps give the phone Verizon support, of sorts. It's disabled by default if you don't use Verizon so there's really nothing to worry about with that app.

Man thank you. There's stuff on here that I don't understand and I've been thinking it's something I've downloaded or whatever. I'm new to all of this.
