Screen draining battery at 33% per hour?! - HTC EVO 3D

How come my Evo V 4G drains at 33% per hour when the screen is on? I'd expect a little better battery life from my phone... I keep it at minimum brightness all the time...

How long does the phone last charged total?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D using xda-developers app

So that equates to about 3 hours of screen on time. That's about what I usually get on ICS roms, so I want to say it's normal (or at least we're both in the same boat).

My daily schedule is usually 45 minutes on the bus to school, music + random bits of texting, and another 45 minutes after school on the way back home. Almost dead by the end of it. Kind of pathetic if my old iPod touch 2G that I've had since ~4 years can outdo that in terms of battery life... (minus texting, but I'm usually connected to school WiFi on my iPod anyway!)

What about GB ROMs? I'm willing to make the tradeoff for battery life, since this is just awful... also, what ROMs do you use?

Yeah, unless you get a huge battery, battery life on Android is pretty abysmal, especially if you have bad reception. I test a lot of roms, but my dailies are the Imagika roms (Zr3dxl, Common sense, and Homebrew). I also use Negalite ROM sometimes too.

The screen is the most drain on the battery, so 33% per hour with the screen on for an hour is fairly normal.

Are you putting the phone in Airplane mode during the school day? Or at least turning the 3g/4g off? If it's in a locker all day, it will be constantly searching for a signal, thus wasting battery. You should at LEAST turn off all internet (3g/4g/wifi).

Well 2g uses about 25% of the battery that 3g/4g does, so that's not surprising.

HA I guess that's what I get for working 16 hours straight on no sleep.
Either way, you cannot compare an ipod with no phone/3g radio to an android phone. The phone is constantly connecting/searching for signal for both the phone and 3g, and has more apps syncing in the background than an ipod normally does.

So how's battery life?

Much better than the 4G? Someone...anyone?
a little too early to tell i would imagine.. i can let you know tomm
but kinda hard to compare it to my evo since i rooted the phone as soon as i could... spend a year with the phone rooted
so of course, the phone was better than a stock evo
i dont think this should be bad, as long as you turn your data off and all those other things you can do to save batt.
of course, at 1st everyone will be playing with the phone, so its hard to say but with normal use it should last as a phone like thing should.. smartphones have never been known for their batt
Ive had it on since I got it and its still alive
Battery life is a lot better than the stock Evos for sure. It is a lot better than the reviews you've been reading, or comments about it for that matter.
For know battery is great for me. But i can really tell you tomorrow if the phone still alive after work!
My bet is that they aren't regular Sprint users and don't see the "4G on" button as some sort of suicide switch like we do....they get sent a review phone to review.
Then they rag on Wimax for a while neglecting that it's in fact a relatively more robust protocol and it's the frequency involved that causes the horrible signal propagation characteristics Sprint/Clear's WiMax has become known for...
...and then they applaud Sprint for getting on board the LTE bandwagon, even though most (who understand) consider it the lesser protocol....even though Sprint's LTE will be high frequency and just as ****ty (or ****tier) as WiMax.
...WiMax with Verizon's LTE frequencies would be amazing...ahem....in theory, of course.

Looks good so far. I have been using it heavily, youtube, spiderman , camera/video, etc... and I am only at halfway. I didn't charge it before I started using it so I am not sure where it was when it I started.
seems decent, was at home when I got off work. charged it to full been using heavy and still at 85% after 3 hours with Bluetooth,WiFi,gps off and hourly sync of fb twitter pulse and push gmail.

I've been texting, youtube 3d, watching green hornet, xda, with WiFi on and it just now took a notch away from my battery and I've been doing all this for +2 hours. Personally for my level of usage vs my old EVO I can already tell a major difference in the battery.

The jury is still out for me.
I took it off the charger at 6:00 (EST) this morning. Sent about 12 text messages, checked facebook, checked twitter (then closed app), did a few minutes of web browsing, listened to a downloaded podcast on my car radio via bluetooth (~45 minutes), wifi has been off, 4G off, bluetooth off after I got to work, and i'm at 70% right now.
EDIT: Forgot to add I use Push gmail and push active exchange from work set to "as mail comes in" on M-F 7a-7p then it switches to once every 30 minutes.
Did you guys calibrate the battery with the charge technique 8hours on 1 hour off and turn on two minutes then turn off and charge for another hour
Sent from my Evo3d using XDA Premium App
Is anyone's battery really bad? I woke up to the battery at 830am est at 80%. I took 2 3d pictures and use trillian for about 30mins. My 4g gps and wifi are off and tuned 3d off after taking the 2 pictures. I'm sitting at about 60% and it's only been about 2 hours. Not sure if it's just my phone and if i should exchange it.

Where do I check for this info. This is what my battery usage looks like right now:
4 hours on battery:
Display: 83%
Cell Standby: 5%
BeyondPod: 3%
Phone Idle: 3%
Android OS: 3%
Mediaserver: 2%
Bluetooth: 1%
EDIT: Just saw this:
Uptime: 11:57
Awake Time: 9:46
If I'm reading this right, the phone only slept for 2 hours last night? Is this normal?
Mine has been wonderful. Can't put it down... So my awake time is high. I think there is wake lock issue with facebook for HTC friend stream syncing. I don't use it now, but noticed it yesterday. Apps that were battery hogs on my 4G are not so bad on the 3D.. like word with friends.

I was getting insanely bad battery life, I lost about 50% within 30 minutes. This is what I did to fix it, I applied the OTA (still was getting bad battery life) then I did a factory reset on my device and let it charge all the way up to 100% over night. So far I've had it off the charger for almost 2 hours, haven't really been using it a lot but I've lost only 4% in 2 hours. I can really tell a HUGE improvement.
i let mine charge all the way plus some then took it off the charger and starting messing with it.
as my previous post...ive been texting and doing calls rather heavy while having wifi on and i took it off the charger around 530 600 am and its now 2 here and im at half or so.
the battery is doing well for me. also this thing charges so damn quick.

I get 24 hours plus quite a bit. I'm on an old Fresh ROM. And I do use my phone all day. I get hundreds of texts, a few calls, plus I play Words a bunch and Draw Something a few times a day. Here is my chart from yesterday. I did charge about 15 minutes late in the day in my car as you can see in the chart. But this was after 30+ hours of up time. I get amazed myself at how long this thing can go.
To me, screen on time and actual usage really indicate what you get out of a charge. I get about 3 hours of screen on time browsing and reading books before I'm at low battery. Usually, 16 hours is about what I get out of a charge with 2-3 hours of gaming and internet. The only thing I miss from the iPhone is battery: easily 2x the usage over the EVO.

I think sense 3.0 is kind of a battey killer too tho it was with me
I get around 12 hours, but that's with an extended battery.
Just to note a thing - listening music does not eat battery much after all if i switch to airplane mode. Also more apps I install - battery runs out faster. Even with sync off.
With wifi on, sync off I pull it out from charging for 15-16 hours with 20-30% battery life at the end. I use it to text people, check facebook, few phonecalls and listen to music for about hour.
Oh its stock battery.
There should be multiple threads running about this in general. all the flasholics who focus on battery life should post there experiences, with information on the battery brand, ROM, kernel, and usage .
Clearly we all seem to have very different experiences, but finding common aspects of those with the best battery life would be greatly valuable tot he rest of us.
im using a:
1900mah cheapo battery from ebay.
SOS M ICS 3.6 with Sock Kernel
14 Hrs heavy use.
1 day+ in standby
longer battery change rom
kernals have alot to do with battery life,
best battery life i have seen is running meanrom with 5.4 dadova or 5.2 depending on what you feel is a little more stable. I run chads quadrant 1a because I love the speed and batterry is still better then stock
Going from stock Gingerbread ROM to senseless ICS moded ROM nearly doubled my battery life.It went from 24h to almost 48h with absolutely same usage of the phone
Wich senseless ROM did you Flash?

SMART ACTIONS HELP please!

can any of you guide me through these smart actions....because even after the help videos and all, i still dont really understand how the triggers and actions work....i dont think im getting nearly the battery time i should out of this phone.....i have to put it on the charger at least 2 or three times out the day for a little while and by 10-11 oclock its still down to about 30-40 percent....and im hearing people getting almost 2 days on a full battery...not me!! so please help
oh....and what would the correct battery level to put on charger be ?? is 20 to low?
I don't use the smart actions app myself, but I have the maxx and get a day and a half or so between charges on average.
A couple of questions for you though:
Which razr do you have, how much are you on it in a typical day (calls, text, web surf, games, mobile hotspot, etc.)
The reason I ask this is for you to ask yourself "what is really killing my battery" to help you figure out how your phone ticks a little better, and to say if its not maxx, the battery life isn't really gonna be all that great if you're using it all the time.
I work 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, so during the week, I'll typically go 2 to 3 days between charges because I don't use it much, too busy. On the weekends, it will barely make it 5 hours between charges because it provides internet for my ps3 so I can slay the undead all weekend long!
Process all that for a minute, figure out your usage pattern, then figure out what you need to change to get better battery life. And of course, never leave the house without your charger, just in case.
Hope this helps

Oh yea, like a freakin champ. My wife and I live in a hotel for the time being because we just moved. Hotel wifi will get maybe 2mbps down, if I'm lucky to stay connected to it at all. The maxx 4g, anywhere from 4 to 6mbps down (megabytes, not bits). Take into account the occasional storm to screw with the signal a little, other than that its solid all the way.
Hell I've been wifi tethering my game systems since I had the dinc, although 3g gaming sucked a fat one!
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
Seens like 3g-edge connection it is the main battery drain problem on razr.
At wifi, my razr lasts at least 1 day and a half. With 3g /auto sync turned on all the time, my battery last about to 16 hours with normal use.
So, I did the follow script on smart actions and my battery lasts around 1 day at least.
Open smart actions and add 24 time lapses: 00:00 - 00:45, 01-00 - 01-45, 02:00 - 02:45 and go on... do it for every hour.
Then, the trigger: "Screen turned off" and all the time lapses.
Then, actions: "Mobile data, turned off".
With this script, when your screen is turned off, the mobile data from 3g is going to be turned off too from 45 min every hour. And going to be on for 15 min every hour.
When you turn your screen on, the 3g data going to turn on.
The script do not affect your wifi connection.
Sorry about the bad english. Hope this helps.

[Q] Battery Life

How many hours of battery life are you getting out of your galaxy note 2 ...Do you disable wifi at and data at night .Another question when I have wifi and data enabled I noticed that wifi overides data so does data do anything to the battery since wifi over rode it ..Im trying to find out wheather or not I should just disbale certian featured and have longer battery life or just purchase an extra battery and carry that around just in case I will admit one thing the battery on the note 2 is definitely good but I question when people say they get two days of battery how much usage and are they disabling wifi and data at night ? I want to get 8 hours of on screen time it seems like I might get 6 1/2 to 7 hours with a day and a half of usage but rarely two days unless im on the phone lightly like 2 hours a day maybe 3 depending on what app im using thats hogging battery life
Did you have a bad experience with a phone charger Bro? LOL
The more you disable the better but at what point does saving battery become more useful than using the phone.
I understand the obsession because I had it with my nexus so I'm not judging people that worry about it but I use this phone for work and fun with 6+ hours day screen on and I am loving that I only charge when I go to bed and don't have to worry about it again.
Mine lasts all day and I'm on it all the time. Either texting, listening to music, email ect. Maybe you have an app running it down prematurely?
I've also bought 3 extra batteries. Their so cheap. So I have one charged up and ready to go no matter what...LOL
No offence but these threads are so useless. Yesterday I got 5 hours screen time and only 11 hours. I average 7.5 hours and over 16 hours. So what's my point? it depends on location, what you're doing, what apps you have etc.
Finally you could have looked at the huge battery life thread or one of the 5 others.

Nope, don't need it. I went through the whole micromanaging battery with OG Evo and the Galaxy Nexus. You don't need to do any of that on this phone. It has what I call "second generation" LTE radios, they are much more power efficient, and management of wifi and other radios is also improved. I leave 4G, Wifi, Bluetooth, and GPS and Google sync on all the time. Battery usage is consistently 10% per hour when screen is on, and 1% per hour when in standby connected to Wifi or good LTE signal, dropping to 1.25% in weaker signal areas. Voice uses about 1% per 5 minutes talk time.

Battery life: how long does your Atrix last on standby?

How long does your phone last on standby with no data and with the screen off (no activity)? Any usage info would be great
A phone in standby (ie. a phone you're not using at all) can stay like that for days on end. I highly doubt anyone here would make it not using their phone for THAT long. What's the point of that anyway? You don't use it, you might as well not have it...

it is good to hear feedbacks to fellow gamer so i guess 4-5hrs is normal. i have a facebook client and im kinda used to stock jb browser. while opera is a good battery and data saver. gaming should be around 5-6hrs. on the development section they seem to be rarely using their phone as they exceeds 10+ somewhat impossible for an average user.
while this is my best battery backup on cm7. 18+ 5hrs gaming straight and few texting the rest of couple of hours till it runs dry.
EDIT: well, there is a good battery which sells here as low as $3.99, too bad i have unverified payza account
