[Q] Stock rom - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do i need to delete dalvik cache when installing stock rom?.. i just want to install fresh stock rom on my phone to start out clean. (it already has stock though)

if you are flashing with Odin then no, just did clean install myself today, wiped evening apart from external sd....phone probably won't boot after flash, so if that happens just boot into 3e recovery and do factory reset, reboot and all will be good.
XXBLG8 seems a good ics base to use. Feel free to pm me if you are unsure of anything

Best way to flash back to stock rom?

What would be the best way to go from any custom rom back to a stock rom. Wipe data, cache, dalvik cache in recovery, the shut down phone and flash stock rom via odin? Or should I also wipe system before flashing?
Thanks!

You don't need to do any wipes through CWM if you are going to be flashing a stock Odin rom, odin automatically takes care of all that stuff. You can just boot your phone into download mode as is and flash the odin rom.
Regards.
Btw, your title is a bit misleading/ confusing? Aha, you ask "best way to flash back to custom rom" ??
Yes that was indeed a bit misleading, corrected!

[Q] can i reflash miui asop 2.3.7 for a clean install? or odin back to stock first

can i reflash miui asop 2.3.7 for a clean install? or do i need to odin back to stock? im fimilar with cwm but i haven't learned how to use odin yet. im on a vibrant, dont have any nandroid backups and im getting force closes on EVERYTHING. i read other people are getting them too with the latest update. should i reflash the previous update via cwm, wipe dalvik, fix permissions (is that automatic? or do i need to know about the permissions?), factory reset (does that delete files on my interal sd? if not what does?) when i installed this rom, i came from bionix v 1.3.1 and all i did was wipe dalvik and installed from sd, and it worked fine, but i dont think im doing a "clean" install

[Q] Help with Flashing

Today i found my phone very slow and internal memory almost full with nothing really installed.
I decided to flash DDKQ5 (Indian Firmware). When i used Odin and flashed my device. All the process went through fine. Odin showed Green (pass) but when i checked my phone it wasnt flashed. I could see the old apps and contacts still. Where am i going wrong?
And yea i am flashing DDKQ5 over DDKQ5
Do
Wipe cache,
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe dalvik cache
from recovery and reboot.
Hope it solves ur problem.
Install clockwork mod.

Help! installing custom ics roms

Hello, im having trouble getting any custom ics rom to boot after flashing any custom ics kernal, I can flash a custom kernal and load up stock ics rom but then as soon as I flash a custom rom I get stuck on the boot animation screen and the rom doesnt boot up. Does anyone have any suggestions why its doing this? its rather annoying being stuck on cm7 when ics is the way forward. Ive tried every custom ics rom and kernal and the only one that works is stock, my bootloader is unlocked, ive ran out of ideas.
if u wana flash a custom rom first flash kernel and then flash custom rom by cwm. and make a full data wipe-factory reset
and also Wipe cache and Dalvik cache before flashing the rom

Hey,man.
Since you've unlocked your bootloader,I think you are able to flash any custom roms successfully.
So,did you fully wipe after flash the kernel?
take FXP rom for example:flash boot.img inside the zip -> go to CWM and fully wipe , install the rom -> reboot and enjoy.
Before flashing a rom, you are supposed to wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache. If you are flashing roms like ExMIUI or MiniCmSandwich you will also have to wipe system.

Im not new to installing custom roms, I know the procedure in installing a custom rom, the problem is no custom ics rom boots up using any custom kernal.

I do not know if this will work or not, but you can try flashing stock FTF file for your device and then go through the procedure of flashing kernel and rom again.
do wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache then go to mounts and storage and do format system
believe me I have tried everything and nothing works, cm7 works fine with a custom kernal so I dont know what the problem could be.

Did you follow the instruction:
1. flash kernel
2. go to cwm and do wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache then go to mounts and storage and do format system + delete from sd card all folders and files with dots
3. flash rom (if rom has the aroma installer follow the aroma instructions)
4. reboot phone (first boot is up to 10 minutes

..

..
To perform a completely clean installation of a custom ROM, boot into TWRP and wipe system, cache, data.
I have always flashed performed a complete wipe, flash the ROM, flash the kernel, and reboot the phone and set it up to make sure everything works. I then flash gapps.
..
If you want a completely reset device then you need to flash the stock firmware via odin twice with a factory reset via the stock recovery in between flashes. This doesn't reset the flash counter, just everything else.
If you want to reflash a custom rom after that then you root via chainfire, install twrp and flash Los via twrp.
If you want to flash a kernel or anything else you can flash via twrp whenever you want but make sure they are compatible.
If you want to use magisk then you will need to refer to the installation instructions for both magisk and los. It will most likely involve uninstalling supersu and its binaries.
If you have issues with cell signal then you can look at flashing other modems. If no problems leave it alone.
