Radio issue / Airave - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I have been having an issue with my EVO LTE. The other phone in my house, EVO Shift, does not have this issue.
I have an Airave. I have been talking to Sprint with no success. They have sent me two new units out of "Lets try this"
The issue is as follows:
My phone occasionally links to the Airave, but generally only for a moment. Every now and then, it will stay. But for the most part no. My phone, and only my phone, seems to ignore the unit. Even when I have no signal. I have updated PRL numerous times and tried all network modes with no change. What is very strange, however, is the data side will connect. I installed a few signal meters and noticed that voice signal is almost zero but data is full like it should be. Speed tests confirm I am running data through the Airave. Why would the Data side connect, but the Voice side not?

Ok, well that kills that idea. I know this doesn't help but I don't have any issues using the Airave on the EVO LTE, so it's something specific to your account and/or setup.
When you go to the ##DEBUG# screen, 1X engineering, when in the same area as your home but not near the Airave coverage what does your SID, Channel, and NID show?
Does any of this change when you go to the Airave coverage area?

Mine does the same thing. Spent hours on phone with sprint. Still does it. I gave up.

Anyone else having reception/signal issues?

I just got my phone yesterday and noticed it today at work. With my og EVO I would consistantly get 3 bars at work and with the EVO 4g LTE I am getting 0-1 bar and roaming a lot which is killing my battery as well. Is the antenna is this EVO not as strong as the og EVO? This is a pretty big problem because I use my phone all the time at work. Iv tried updating my profile and prl and have done a couple resets. I don't want to return this phone but I may have to

No idea how it compares to og Evo, I have since had 2 other phones plus this one.
But I wouldn't call the reception weak.
You can try and do what I do - force roaming with an app like Roam Control. This way you may have a better signal and good battery life.
For me, the signal strength is pretty much exactly like my Original Evo. The wireless actually working on the other hand is not.
My signal is aweful compared to my og EVO. Right now my signal is -105dbm
Strange. My signal is 2-3 bars better than my OG...
I'm having issues with 3g staying connected. I'll lose it turn the radios off and turn back on. It days connecting that's it. I have to reboot to get data working. Updated profile and prl but wats odd is that it always updates and never tells me that I have the recent prl. Any ideas? It's really pissing me off!
I thought it was the weather but yea. My og seems to pick up signal in remote places better.

Yes it is a known fact that the antennas in the new EVO are less efficient than the original EVO. Someone compared the FCC docs but I don't remember the difference. I think it was 2db difference.

Thanks for the info. Looks like ill be returning my EVO today sprints coverage where I work isnt the greatest to begin with and with a weaker antenna makes the phone almost unusable. Come on HTC and sprint, if your going to charge 200 for this phone at least put a decent antenna in it so I can do the basics like calling and emails.
I'll be sitting in one spot and my 3g will drop and the. Come back . It's kind of annoying
Mine was having problems roaming to other towers as well but I went in and changed the preferred network mode from LTE/CDMA to CDMA only and it's much better.
Took me forever to find where it was located: Settings -> Mobile network -> Network mode
Thought that hitting mobile network would just toggle it on/off but if you don't hit the on/off button it puts you into a submenu with more options.
The Wifi antenna seems much better but the mobile antenna seems not quite as good to me. Once I changed it CDMA only it's comparable to my OG Evo.
i'm having the same issues, I loose 3G connections, I have very low signal strength and it is killing my battery..
Ya ive seen a few people with this same issue. it seems like its only in places where i have a weak sprint signal is when the Evo 4g is worse than the OG.
Right now I am sitting at home and the OG evo is -84 dBm and the Evo 4g LTE is -79 dBm so the 4g LTE is actually getting a better signal than the OG.
Im going back to work later and im going to see what the numbers look like there. But on the 4g LTE i was barely able to get a 3g signal at work but the OG evo always had one.
internet/phone sig are different; color of switch
I wonder where you are located OP. We called Sprint and they keep telling us that they are "repairing a tower" near us in Mass.
Two additional notes. First, our internet/3G seems to be much faster since the upgrade from OG to this device. Ookla confirmed this too, about 3-4x faster download speed, 2x faster upload (about 800+ each). However, we have two devices and neither of them can phone anymore! Sprint even drops our text sms sometimes. We are thinking of returning the devices since Sprint has told us three times (one week ago, 3 days ago, and today) that they are "repairing a tower" and always changing the date (now to June 8).
The other thing is that one of the devices, in settings> shows whatever wireless/network is toggled on with red switch, and the other device shows the toggled on with green switch.
Does anyone else have better internet and no phone?
Does anyone else have red switch? It seems logical the "on" switch should be green.
Note: It doesn't make sense to me that I still get 3-4 bars on my old Evo (which was obviously deactivated) and it calls out to a "sorry no service" message loud and clear, but my new Evo can't even reliably send a text much less make a phone call.
Same problem here but mine is weird. I will have full bars and out of nowhere, I drop to 1-2 and it goes into roaming, except even though it's "roaming" I have no data or voice (yes I enabled roaming voice and data). It will stay like that from 1-8 seconds and then go back to Sprint's service. Also, if I tried to send a text during that time, it will fail and if I was getting a call it wouldn't show for 30 to an hour later.
What's weird is that my girlfriends Evo LTE was sitting right next to mine and had full bars all the time with no problem. I am thinking at least mine is a hardware problem. I'll monitor mine for another day and then take it in if the problem stays.
Mine helped switching to cdma only.

I've been doing that for a couple days and just yesterday it started dropping 3g for no reason again... Cell is just fine everywhere, but i called sprint and they said that there were tower outages until June1st. I'm sorry but i could've sworn today is the 4th? And i guess there is no more tech support department? Because I've called twice and they won't transfer me. Grrr

So i was able to do some testing and found the Evo 4g LTE to be about 10 dBm less than the OG Evo in almost every place i tested them. Also sitting in my house about a quarter mile from a tower my 3g speed on speedtest.net was 97kbps down and 51kbps up with a 255 ping!!!!!
These speeds are not acceptable even in 1x let alone 3g.
I am trying everything not to return this phone but these kind of issues are so disappointing. I never had issues like this with my evo when it first came out :/

My problem was so bad - I was missing almost every incoming call, but instantly get a voicemail notification. Texts would come in once or twice a day - in large groups. After my phone working fine for 4-5 days I thought for sure, hardware problem. I hadnt rooted, reset to factory, update prl/profile (Through update and *2) etc etc .... no luck
Call and talked with CSR and techs etc for 3 days or so, with no luck. So I take it into my local repair shop - the lady took maybe 15 minutes with my phone, and told me something got hung up initially with the provisions. (Even though it worked fine for days)
So she reflashed software/reprovisioned my phone and its been golden since. Seems that "reactivating" the phone did the trick!

Dropped calls fix?

Hello everyone, I started using this Evo yesterday, and already have had 4 dropped calls. I have already swapped back to my old phone, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a solution to fix this dropped calls issue. At this point this phone is on usable for my business, and I am about to return it.
where are you from? because sprint is in the process of updating every single one of their towers (not all at once, but going from city to city) to enhance the 3g performance on newer phones such as the evo lte. During these upgrades however, the call quality and internet speeds are terrible. i know because my towers are being updated now and the sprint everything is terrible here at the moment on my lte. however my dad with the old evo has no problems what so ever.
My other phone has no problems, nor does my wife's Sprint phone. So the problem seems to be this particular phone.
It is a known fact that the EVO LTE has less coverage due to the RF capabilities.
Sent from my C64 w/Epyx FastLoad cartridge
If that is the case then I am definitely going to dump it. Looks like a GS3 for me. It's too bad they can't make this thing at least as good as the first 2 Evos. My wife's 3D has performed flawlessly for a year now.
Depends on how you look at it. I was in a fringe area. My phone switched over to roaming and was usable there. The G3 was not usable as it kept trying to hang on to that poor signal.
From what I have seen too, the EVO is better in the 850 band so roaming you would have even more coverage plus when 800smr fires up for your area you will get better coverage there as well. Pros and cons...

rx power -84dB (but it changes constantly between -80 and -88 or so)
rx ec/io -9.0db (again, it changes constantly between -8 and -11.5)
my Photon sitting right next to the Evo has a rx ec/io reading of 110 dB (?!?) and rx Power -84dB and never drops calls.
I don't know what I am talking about, but could this be a PRL issue?
Photon PRL: 51090
Evo LTE: 25005
I am also wondering of changing from LTE/CDMA to CDMA only in the network settings will help battery life when there is no LTE in this area yet...

No, a PRL isn't going to effect your native Sprint signal. Something is odd with that Photo EC/IO. An EC/IO is always a negative number, without going in to huge detail it deals with Pilot Channel pollution...kinda like the interference level or health of the pilot channel. If it is worse than -10 than your handset may search for a sector with a better EC/IO. But I've seen -14 on mine in places and no issues. -84 dbm receive signal is good...nothing really wrong with those numbers, especially indoors. It's not a linear scale, but basically a -60 or better means you are very very close to the tower and -103ish or worse is about to fall off the cliff.
So this information says nothing about the dropped calls then, right?
I always drop calls but usually its bc my phone randomly goes into airplane mode by itself while on a call..es . drives me nuts
Firmbiz, did you root or mess with your phone at all?
Try changing system settings to EVDO Only.
The default stock setting is EVDO/LTE.. I have yet to have a dropped call but im also not a heavy talker.
I do use data and noticed this helped with some data issues.
Make the switch and then power off the device, and power it back on. Make sure you have fast boot disabled as well.

Dropped calls are probably a result of strain on the network during upgrades.

I recently was able to play with a S3 and the EVO LTE side by side on a 30 minute trip through various areas of signal. I was surprised comparing their signal numbers and speedtest they seemed pretty neck and neck on things. I was expecting the S3 to be much better due to everything I read about the two phones.
Sent from my C64 w/Epyx FastLoad cartridge
Radios seems similar, but overall the S3 operates and feels faster. I'm wondering if any of the custom roms for the Evo really help with speed.
Also the Evo has better battery life.
Just for the record I brought the phone into a sprint store yesterday and it failed the hardware diagnostics test. Today it is being mailed to htc.
Updated the radios on my phone the the reception seemed to get worse.

Just wanted to mention to that once you upgrade the radios it is highly recommended not to try and downgrade as you have a large possibility of bricking your phone.

Jumping to 4g?

Just curious, does anyone else's evo not connect to 4g unless they cycle 3g on and off? there is one area a few miles from my house and when i go up there (knowing there is solid 4g) my phone will stay on 3g the whole time im up there. now if im up there and cycle airplane mode or flip my internet on and off then it connects to 4g right away as soon as the radio turns on, no problem. Occasionally if i leave my phone in my pocket it will hop back to 3g but then it will stay there again until i flip off and on my internet and then like magic my 4g is back.
Does this happen to everyone else or is it just me? haha may just be the tower also considering im a little southwest of chicago and they haven't really officially launched per say.
It's a common problem with the EVO and HTC has not fixed it yet.
They better get to work as people are thinking the LTE network sucks. Compare it to a S3 side by side and it has no issues.
I still have my insurance and will keep it as when lte is available in my area I will be bringing my phone into the store over and over until they swap me out.
Love the EVO but if it sucks for using LTE then it has to go bye bye.

im quickly getting to that point. my wifes s3 and daughters iphone5 can hold an lte signal great. but this evo with the current radios just plain sucks.
sitting right next to each other my evo is rocking 1x, the s3 is bouncing between 3g and lte and the iphone is holding lte.
My phone finds LTE in MA but has problems with voice and won't text at all sometimes. Not sure whether that a problem with the network or phone.

this is happening to me to i knew there was a tower right by me but no LTE connected so i changed the network settings to CDMA/LTE and held LTE until i left the area. I was getting only 1.5mbps which i think sucks for LTE. Its hard to stay what the issue it whether its the phone or actual software settings that maybe OTA can fix. Weird thing i noticed when i updated to the latest firmware is LTE only setting holds LTE and 1X, CDMA/LTE never picks up 3g so i just end up putting it back to stock settings. Really considering taking it back to compare to the store phones.
Having the same problem as well. It will connect to 4G on its own but it would take its sweet time. So the fastest way for me is toggle airplane mode. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Many people think it is just the new network but in fact it is not. You quickly realize it when you have another LTE phone next to the EVO LTE that the EVO has a huge issue. We just all need to band together and stay on top of Sprint and HTC constantly bugging them until this issue is fixed. We done things like this before, but we all need to do it again to get this fixed ASAP!

im starting to think this too that it might be the phone. OG Evo4g was never this slow on 3g and i had wimax in my house. Now i barely get 3g in my house and no LTE unless i drive down the road. It sucks not being able to pin point this. I tested it with another evo4g lte and they had similiar results as me...need to try another LTE non-evo4g phone next...
I made a thread about this last week-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898433
I pretty much stuck myself between two towers which I knew were transmitting 4G but refused to cycle through airplane mode or LTE/CDMA and CDMA-only modes. I passed by both and the phone never switched over.
On the plus side, my phone did acquire a fairly weak 4G signal today on its own, so there may be some hope for this thing yet.

I’m confused, is there an LTE-only setting in the latest firmware, or are you talking about the option in the *#*#INFO#*#* (*#*#4636#*#*) menu? I’m honestly a little wary of using that since I’ve heard it can cause problems that only a factory reset can solve.
yeah the options ##DATA# or when using the elixir app under telephony.
Anyone having this issue needs to call Sprint and HTC and require them to open a ticket for the issue. This is the only way it will get fixed. I hear some are getting told that it is due to the new tower equipment. So you might need another LTE device to compare it to. Others are getting told there is an update coming soon. Others are getting told that the EVO has no issues.
It is obvious though, sprint has stopped pushing this phone. They don't even list it in their lte press releases.

it tells the phone which towers to connect to first, so it could tell the phone to connect to a faster tower instead of a slower one

Prl only affects roaming. Nothing to do with sprint native coverage. For example certain prl's will allow you to connect to 3g roaming with verizon.
Just updated in ny

Prl has absolutely nothing to do with your 3g or 4g speeds.

Lol yes it does. Especially on Sprint and especially when you live where I live. If the verizon tower near where I live wasn't included in the roaming list that I have then I would probably not even connect to 1X.
So yes, it does matter.

Doesn't matter in regards to native coverage. Of course it matters for roaming.

No it doesn't tell your phone to connect to towers on an order. It's by cellular system.
The only thing you will get out of this is of you are in Baltimore it adds 800smr coverage there.

Is anybody else noticing poor or poorer signal with the PRL 25010?
What ever the previous PRL was it seemed to work well. Sometime this week my service updated with 25010 and i started to notice lower signal in areas that i have always had full signal.
Then on 3 occasions now i have had text messages come all at once..
Example, this morning 11 messages came in all at once. This is bad because where i live is always full bars / great service. For the past few days its been 1 to 3 bars..
Another example. At my office, i get 4G LTE half bars, its been hovering at 1 bar. Then i got an email from someone trying to call me and it goes straight to voice mail. So i called my self using a differnt phone and sure enough.. multiple times it went to voice mail. Power cycling the phone fixed the issue of calls not going thru but i still have what seems to be poorer recieve signal strength.
I did check the back cover and verify its on tight.
Also my data speeds seem slower, on 3G and LTE.. but i would expect this with lower signal anyway, so the two should go hand in hand..

Settings - System Updates - Update PRL (this won't affect your root or S-OFF)

Everything you describe would not be caused by a PRL update. These would be tower issues.
