Just curious, does anyone else's evo not connect to 4g unless they cycle 3g on and off? there is one area a few miles from my house and when i go up there (knowing there is solid 4g) my phone will stay on 3g the whole time im up there. now if im up there and cycle airplane mode or flip my internet on and off then it connects to 4g right away as soon as the radio turns on, no problem. Occasionally if i leave my phone in my pocket it will hop back to 3g but then it will stay there again until i flip off and on my internet and then like magic my 4g is back.
Does this happen to everyone else or is it just me? haha may just be the tower also considering im a little southwest of chicago and they haven't really officially launched per say.
It's a common problem with the EVO and HTC has not fixed it yet.
They better get to work as people are thinking the LTE network sucks. Compare it to a S3 side by side and it has no issues.
I still have my insurance and will keep it as when lte is available in my area I will be bringing my phone into the store over and over until they swap me out.
Love the EVO but if it sucks for using LTE then it has to go bye bye.

im quickly getting to that point. my wifes s3 and daughters iphone5 can hold an lte signal great. but this evo with the current radios just plain sucks.
sitting right next to each other my evo is rocking 1x, the s3 is bouncing between 3g and lte and the iphone is holding lte.
My phone finds LTE in MA but has problems with voice and won't text at all sometimes. Not sure whether that a problem with the network or phone.

this is happening to me to i knew there was a tower right by me but no LTE connected so i changed the network settings to CDMA/LTE and held LTE until i left the area. I was getting only 1.5mbps which i think sucks for LTE. Its hard to stay what the issue it whether its the phone or actual software settings that maybe OTA can fix. Weird thing i noticed when i updated to the latest firmware is LTE only setting holds LTE and 1X, CDMA/LTE never picks up 3g so i just end up putting it back to stock settings. Really considering taking it back to compare to the store phones.
Having the same problem as well. It will connect to 4G on its own but it would take its sweet time. So the fastest way for me is toggle airplane mode. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Many people think it is just the new network but in fact it is not. You quickly realize it when you have another LTE phone next to the EVO LTE that the EVO has a huge issue. We just all need to band together and stay on top of Sprint and HTC constantly bugging them until this issue is fixed. We done things like this before, but we all need to do it again to get this fixed ASAP!

im starting to think this too that it might be the phone. OG Evo4g was never this slow on 3g and i had wimax in my house. Now i barely get 3g in my house and no LTE unless i drive down the road. It sucks not being able to pin point this. I tested it with another evo4g lte and they had similiar results as me...need to try another LTE non-evo4g phone next...
I made a thread about this last week-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898433
I pretty much stuck myself between two towers which I knew were transmitting 4G but refused to cycle through airplane mode or LTE/CDMA and CDMA-only modes. I passed by both and the phone never switched over.
On the plus side, my phone did acquire a fairly weak 4G signal today on its own, so there may be some hope for this thing yet.

I’m confused, is there an LTE-only setting in the latest firmware, or are you talking about the option in the *#*#INFO#*#* (*#*#4636#*#*) menu? I’m honestly a little wary of using that since I’ve heard it can cause problems that only a factory reset can solve.
yeah the options ##DATA# or when using the elixir app under telephony.
Anyone having this issue needs to call Sprint and HTC and require them to open a ticket for the issue. This is the only way it will get fixed. I hear some are getting told that it is due to the new tower equipment. So you might need another LTE device to compare it to. Others are getting told there is an update coming soon. Others are getting told that the EVO has no issues.
It is obvious though, sprint has stopped pushing this phone. They don't even list it in their lte press releases.

Do we know what the values mean though? One would assume seconds but if you increased and got better results, it could mean something else.

At this point its worth a shot. I would test it but I don't have LTE close enough to me. The option that is just below LTE scan timer, BSR Max timer, I'm curious as to what that is.

I am coming from an Evo 4G. My apartment has always had sub par reception on sprint but now with the Evo 3D it is becoming irritating. In the same places I had 3G, I now am roaming. In a place where I had 2-3 4G bars, I have barely 1. I have tried updating my prl, my profile. One thing that I will note is that 4G on the 1 reported bar is about as good as the 3 bars on the old Evo. However 3G reception is definitely not very good overall.
My question - as I approach the one month I have had this phone, I wonder if I should:
A. Exchange the phone for another 3D. Has anyone heard of reception issues related to hardware? How has this device compared for everyone to the old Evo as far as reception? Do I have a dud?
B. Return it and get an original Evo.
C. Something else - call sprint ask for airwave or something like that.
I appreciate any advice anyone has. Thanks in advance.
My radio bars do show a tad lower, but I havent really noticed any issues.
I am willing to be some future PRL updates will help this.
My OG Evo was the same around launch time too
Had the same issue vs my old Eris on Verizon. Sprint reset the network which helped some, but I wound up manually changing the PRL to a USCellular one. Gained 4 bars.

so PRL updates meaning non-sprint developer created? so 2 votes in favor of waiting it out?

Have some friends with different carriers test your area, see which is stronger and use their PRL. That's what I did, told that to the Sprint rep while getting my MSL and he liked the idea (I did hint I would leave if I couldn't get a better signal).

Had the exact same issue and well I returned mine this last Sunday and got a new 3d and well it's better so far. Last week Sprint updated prl over the air and it worked for a minute and then it was back to roaming, dropping calls, battery draining like crazy, sensitive power button. I know it's only Monday but I have not dropped one call or went into roaming yet.

Verizon is strongest but if I take that PRL then I wont have Sprint 4G will I?
Also how would you load the other PRL?
Thank you!
I had the power button sensitivity issue - where the button presses momentarily caused the power menu to come up instead of going into sleep mode. So I took that phone into Sprint yesterday and they gave me a new phone, within 30 days. Any replacement should be a new phone and not a refurbished one within the initial 30 days of purchase.
Point being is that they new phone to me doesn't pick up a signal as well as the other Evo 3D that I had. We have an Airave at work and the old phone would have max bars and crystal clear, today first day with the new phone was at about 2 or so bars and the one phone call was very well lets just say not so crystal clear.
Recommend you take the phone back and ask them to test it. They can test the phone for you, and worst case swamp it out for you. Don't recommend PRL hacks since those tend to get people kicked out of Sprint due to excessive roaming.

Sprint 4G is on a different radio than data/voice, WiMax vs CDMA/1Rxx.
If you search for say "carrier name" PRL July 2011, you should be able to find a current file. Download the file, open QPST Service Programming, click the tab "Roam" and put the file location in "Preferred Roaming". I don't think you have a dud. Rather than bars, what are your actual speeds using something like Speed Test from the Market. I've had well....more than 3 of these E3D's, lol, and only 1 got half-ass decent speeds out of the box. With some re-provisioning and data reset methods in the General section I got all of them to set up correctly on the network.
Today I lost all data. Sprint says it is because they are updating their towers. Should I have this problem all over Dallas? My wifes phone works fine. Spent an hour with tech no luck. I went to the Sprint store and they just said people have been coming in all day.
My two friends with the same phone have no issues and one other with a rooted phone has issues. I hope I didn't lose data because I rooted my phone.
Any one else having these issues?
You can be certain that it isn't the rooting itself that would cause your data issue. Try going into your settings>Mobile Network: and where it says "Network Mode" select it and choose "CDMA Only" and see if you can connect then. With network vision being so close I would image alot of strange things are going on in those areas (im in the atlanta market but havent experience and problems). And one guess I have is since data is fine on a non LTE-device, it's almost CERTAINLY a tower work kind of error. Our phones (lte phones) have different PRL's than non LTE phones so our phones choose what towers to connect to , and how to connect to them, differently. I'm sure this will be remedied extremely soon. probably fine by the time you wake up in the morning.
Im in Grapevine/colleyville and I frequently loose data for a sec, but not long periods of time. It's cause of the lte roll out. Should be all good on july 15th
Thanks guys, puts my mind at ease. Can't wait til it's here.
Live in Dallas work in grapevine, same issues. Hoping 15th roll out solves everything, luckily I'm on WiFi at home and work so its not overly unbearable. Grapevine however I have trouble with text sometimes.

Im actually having the same issue here in Houston. If network mode is set to LTE/CDMA, i get no data. Still shows 3G, but the arrows that show receive/transmit show the transmit arrow solid. Where if I change my network mode to CDMA only, data works fine.
So HOPEFULLY it is as suggested, tower work due to Network Vision. Fingers crossed!

Same issue in Austin. The CS rep I'm talking to speculates it might be tied to the storms in the NE/midwest.
I'm also getting errors updating my PRL and profile.
On hold with tech support right now. Once I'm done, I'll try setting my network mode to CDMA only and see if that helps.
Well today i had no signal and everyone i know had no signal we all have sprint. Sprint said as we speak they were working on the vision project for the towers for lte and from what i read online today was they day they were working in my area. The plan for lte was to start with the small towns around Chicago and then chicago last so people in Chicago could pick up signals from near by areas until the towers in Chicago get updated. Theres more cell towers in chicago alone then the rest of illinois combined so this make perfect since. I'm from Rockford Illinois and i have horrible 3g speeds. Hoping they flip this lte switch soon.

Things are working for me again. Sprint tech guy had me dial ##72786# and input the password 033322. From their, he had me hit menu and reset.
The phone rebooted and reactivated. Then I updated my profile and prl. Those failed the first few times, but they worked when I set the network mode to cdma only. Switched back to cdma/lte and everything's back to normal.
The tech did confirm that we were feeling echoes of the network disruption (due to a storm) in the northeast.

Mine did that the first night I had it for a few ours. Had no signal at all. Went to bed and in am it was back to normal. Is your roaming on? Turn it on once and see if you get a signal and data. I was able to when I had no signal with sprint only on
rockin my EVO 4G LTE
So I might possibly have a fix for the continual dropping of the LTE connection, this is what I did
Enter the menu through the dialer via ##3282#
Select Edit Menu, enter your MSL number (You can get it from MSL Reader in the play store - requires root)
Select LTE Record
Change LTE scan Timer from 30 to 5
Select Menu and select commit changes, reboot and check LTE connection
I don't know if this is actually a good fix or just a coincidence that mine started working right after I made the change, I did this in an attempt to make my phone scan for LTE more frequently in hopes that it would stay connected, right after I made the change i have had absolutely no problem staying connected to the LTE network.
I would appreciate it if other people can change this and reply with their results so we can see if it actually makes a difference or not
Keep in mind that this will impact your battery life. You are forcing your phone to constantly search for a signal when you are in an area where there is none. Prl updates are now being used to update LTE info on the phone so try updating your prl

Updated prl many times only to be connected to LTE for a very short time and then kicked back to 3G, and i have not had any noticeable impact on battery life. As of right now I am at 4 hours on battery, 95% remaining, and 57% of that battery usage is from the screen
When you get to an area without LTE, the phone will constantly search for signal, that's when battery life will be impacted. This radio design is pretty low power though.
I might have to try this but I definitely do not want my battery life to go down.
Thanks
well in my case and I imagine with most other people who are having LTE connection issues, I live and travel within the coverage area and when I do travel outside the area I have a car charger with me or something of that nature, and on the other hand my battery life with the EVO LTE is so excellent with MeanROM I never have really had to worry about it

No, LTE does drain power but its set to only scan after a set time, this workaround lowers the time between scans significantly and will use more power. Some LTE phones have a separate chipset solely for LTE. They waste much more power then the integrated setup our phones use. Thunderbolt is a good example of that. Separate radios and terrible battery life

Not really. Although the correct records have to be in the Prl for LTE to work they are not pushing updates to make lte work in new markets. Also the prl is not going to fix this connection issue.

Will changing the LTE scan timer actually fix the threshold issue though?
I've found by doing *#*#4636#*#* and change the setting from CDMA +LTE/EVDO Auto to LTE,CDMA you can hold the LTE connection much longer. All the way up to -130 dBm RSRP. Even an LTE connection at -120 dBm should yield better results than 3G.
You'll still need to change it back once you are out of LTE though as you'll be left on 1X.

Some people have not updated prl at all, they could benefit from an update.
I wonder if this is related to the wifi disconnecting in order to save battery life. Does it only drop LTE when the screen is off or does it also disconnect when it's being used?
If it's disconnecting on purpose shortening the reconnect time shouldn't harm battery life too much as long as you're in an area with LTE.
It won't if you are in a reliable area, in a fringe area you may connect. When the connection weakens, it will default to 3g and the phone will search again. If you make this change and live in an area without, it will continue to scan until signal is found
Ok, so I was skeptical about the LTE issues of this phone. Because of this I grabbed my wife's LG Viper to see if she had 4G. She didn't, then I remembered I switched her phone to 3G only when she first got it to save battery life since her battery life sucks. When I switched back on get 4G, her viper connected to 4G right away. After playing around with her viper for a while and pulling in some good speed tests, I went back to my Evo, which was still sporting only 3G.
After cycling to airplane mode and back, my Evo showed 4G just long enough for me to get a signal reading of -113db. After playing around with my Evo for a while, I was able to hold a signal long enough to get a couple of speed tests in before it would switch back to 3G.
After playing with both phones for a while, I was able to observe that even though we are on the edge of a 4G tower, the viper did not switch over to 3G. It stayed on 4G even though the signals for 4G were pretty equal for the two phones. One thing I did find in the viper's ##data# menu is an option of "LTE, EVDO, 1X". Basically it looks like an order option for which the phone to look for service. I did not see this option on my Evo.
From what I've experienced, it seems that the Evo switches back to 3G a little too soon. Is there a way for us to make it hold on to the signal a little longer or with less db?
I will be playing around some more with the two phones. Right now, I switched my scan timer to 5. The only way my Evo is holding onto 4G right now is because I switched the data option to LTE only. The funny thing is that its been working great and holding onto 4G perfectly. I've seen it dip down to -118db and still function fine.
Sorry for the long post. I will have to agree that the Evo seeks to have a software issue.

Na this issue is more of a threshold issue I believe they are talking about. Ie seeing an EVO and an sgs3 side by side with only the sgs3 connecting to LTE... I can understand on weak signal areas as the sgs3 is supposed to have a tad better antennae and other things related to that area and such given the FCC docs results discussed at s4gru by AJ...
But in a fairly good area signal wise on both phones they both should get LTE which isn't the case at times it seems.... Hence the thought HTC needs to tweak the threshold here for us...I remember on WiMAX it was an easy edit, but haven't even looked once on our phone since I don't get lte here anyway. Lol

It is most likely a threshold issue. Too bad I can't seem to find anything either to fix it either, not in a reliable area to really justify mucking about with my phone. WiMAX was so much easier, then again just as easy to screw up. Could be one of the reasons this phone is locked down so tight
hey, im hoping to get some help.
I type in ##3282# and nothing happens on my dialer, am i suppose to hit something?
I am on aokp build 3, does that even matter?
I have had 4g in allston for a few weeks now, and for some reason i can not get a hold on that signal anymore. My phone says i have lte 13 connection, but i can not get a 4g internet signal.
Hoping getting into the phone debug menu or lte menu i can manual lock in on the tower better, but i can not get to the menu to edit those settings.
Ive updated to the 2.13.651.1 ota and PRI 2.45_003.

I really like this phone but want to make sure that the LTE connection issues are able to be fixed with a software update. I hope Sprint isn't BS'ing on this. I have a couple of days to return the phone and want to make sure this is fixable before deciding to keep it.
Anyone know if the Sprint rep who said it's a software issue is telling the truth or BS?
At heart it is a good radio. No reason it shouldn't work as it's supposed to. So, the majority of the issue is software. And it is fixable. Maybe just as good as S3 and iPhone 5 LTE reception?
The big question here is if Sprint will actually fix it this time. Know that there were fixes for LTE in 2 previous ota's. To what extent they worked on it before, idk. Thinking that this time is make or break it.
So, the answer is wait and see. U can get out of contract if LTE doesn't work for u though. It's apart of your service plan. Gonna require persistence on your part to get out after the 14 days is up, but u can do it.
If I were u and needed a good LTE capable phone, I'd go with the S3. Because at this point, it is up in the air if it will receive LTE like it should in the near future.
Correction first update was wifi, second was lte lol
Hope so. Has to be software related since both this and the s3 have the same radio. And, since the airplane mode on/off trick gets it working, I'm lead to believe its software.

Airplane mode trick???
I really hope they can fix this. I decided to keep the phone after looking at the S3 screen and build quality I just couldn't switch. I really love the screen on this!! It is just as good as my wife's iPhone 5 in color reproduction. The S3 is nice but don't like PenTile as I can notice it and I don't like it when whites have a blue color to it.
The Evo LTE has the same SoC as the S3. If the Evo was having hardware problems with LTE so would the S3, but that is not the case (according to what I have been able to look up). Therefore it can be concluded that the LTE issues are software and not hardware.

AKA Airplane Mode Dance
If you are in an LTE area and your phone is stuck on 3G, or if your phone is on LTE and it drops back down to 3G, then toggling Airplane Mode ON and back OFF will make the radio scan and re-latch to LTE.
That's the problem with our EVOs, it's an LTE threshold and handoff problem.
I live right on the edge of LTE coverage, so my phone will handoff to 3G because it decides the LTE signal is too weak. The problem is, in my area a "weak" LTE signal is MUCH faster than a strong 3G signal. If I go into my radio options and choose "LTE only" it will hold LTE signal all day long. So the signal is there, albeit weak.
What we need is a software fix that will change our radio's signal threshold so that it will prioritize a weaker LTE signal over 3G.
I'm tired of doing the airplane mode dance. If LTE is available, I want my EVO to latch on and stay on it even if it's weak.

I use to get spotty LTE here in san Antonio so I thought it was the radio. But now I've been getting it pretty consistantly everywhere. So now I'm starting to think its there towers or something

Using a Sense ROM, open your phone dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
Select "Phone Information" then scroll down to "Preferred Network Type" and that should give you the option you're looking for

Or download the app "network" from playstore. Let's u do the same thing while less obtrusive and gives u more options.

Can you link it? I'm finding various apps named "network" something or another but none with just that solely as the title
The icon changed so I had a bit of trouble finding it but here you go Network app

Thanks guys! Installing app now and have the data code saved for a rainy day as well
Edit : after switching to lte only, I get no data (voice or sms) but im able to run a speed test using 4g. I live in L.A. but I connect to an Albuquerque, New Mexico server I'm not sure what else I'm to do to enable lte only and keep data
It's NOT true for me that switching it to LTE only will keep it connected. I still only keep the connection for about 10 seconds and then it goes back to 3G. My understanding is that option in both *#*#4634#*#* and ##DATA# is "preferred mode." It will drop back to 3G.
And I know for sure that Sprint and HTC have an open ticket on this issue of aquiring and keeping an LTE signal. They will eventually get a fix out for it.
I used the network tool post earlier and set mine to cdma/lte... So I get 4g and voice/text.. no evdo. Which is fine by me because evdo sucks anyway lol.
Works great I now can keep 4g in my house like my gfs gs3 and not switch back to crap-do

Someone try the 10/21 build of cm10 from deck.
I'm holding lte and seeing it places I couldn't get it before even when set to lte only.
This has completely corrected the issue for me.

it tells the phone which towers to connect to first, so it could tell the phone to connect to a faster tower instead of a slower one

Prl only affects roaming. Nothing to do with sprint native coverage. For example certain prl's will allow you to connect to 3g roaming with verizon.

Lol yes it does. Especially on Sprint and especially when you live where I live. If the verizon tower near where I live wasn't included in the roaming list that I have then I would probably not even connect to 1X.
So yes, it does matter.

Doesn't matter in regards to native coverage. Of course it matters for roaming.

No it doesn't tell your phone to connect to towers on an order. It's by cellular system.
The only thing you will get out of this is of you are in Baltimore it adds 800smr coverage there.

Is anybody else noticing poor or poorer signal with the PRL 25010?
What ever the previous PRL was it seemed to work well. Sometime this week my service updated with 25010 and i started to notice lower signal in areas that i have always had full signal.
Then on 3 occasions now i have had text messages come all at once..
Example, this morning 11 messages came in all at once. This is bad because where i live is always full bars / great service. For the past few days its been 1 to 3 bars..
Another example. At my office, i get 4G LTE half bars, its been hovering at 1 bar. Then i got an email from someone trying to call me and it goes straight to voice mail. So i called my self using a differnt phone and sure enough.. multiple times it went to voice mail. Power cycling the phone fixed the issue of calls not going thru but i still have what seems to be poorer recieve signal strength.
I did check the back cover and verify its on tight.
Also my data speeds seem slower, on 3G and LTE.. but i would expect this with lower signal anyway, so the two should go hand in hand..

Everything you describe would not be caused by a PRL update. These would be tower issues.
