[Q] [Question] Multiple Entries of Downloaded Ringtones & Notifications - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hola,
I have recently noticed that each time I reboot my Note I717 the previously selected ringtone and notification sounds revert to the factory default. When I enter Settings -> Sounds I see the active selection reads "Unknown Ringtone." I go to the list of those ringtones/notifications available to check why and I find that the name of the downloaded ringtone/notification file has been replicated. Of the multiple files only the bottom-most on the list will actually play the file. Right now I have four entries for yy downloaded ringtone; three do nothing, but the last on the list selects the correct file. The same is true for the notification sound file.
Admittedly, this is not a big deal, but is annoying the hell out of me. Has anyone else encountered this situation? Is there an obvious solution of which I am unaware? Anyone care to venture a guess?
BTW, my Note is rooted, but is AT&T stock all the way, Version 4.0.4, BB UCLF6, Kernel 3.0.8.
Further info: I first loaded the ringtone/notification files on the SD Card, but recently moved the file to the internal memory. That change had no effect on the situation.
Regards,
Bubba

SAME HERE!
Have the exact same problem with my Infuse since I upgraded to ICS...Will get back to you if I finally find an answer!

settings-->> apps-->> all-->> media storage-->> clear data-->> force stop -->> REBOOT !!

Something similar happens with mine. When swapping batteries out it exhibits this. If i just reboot using the toggle it doesn't happen. Also, it only happens with custom ringtones. If i use stock ringtones i have no problems.
I have tried what the post above mine suggests but problem returns as soon as i swap batteries again.

Thanks. This worked. Haven't tried swapping batteries yet.

That worked - at first. After the reboot, the default ringtone was listed as "ATT Play-on" and the notification was "sherbet". However, when I tried to change the ringtone to one I had created, it went back to being an unknown ringtone. The phone is the I777 and the OS is ICS, both from ATT. The ringtone is a 29 second MP3 file I created.
I did go back and try the reboot sequence again after the first attempt and it did clear it back to the default ringtone/notification, but as soon as I changed either, it was listed as unknown again. Is there a special format for ringtones?
Thanks!

[Q] Why is ICS changing my ringtone?

Hi,
ICS runs fine on my S2 (I´m on LPF right now, very stable ROM), but one thing annoys me a lot: ICS keeps changing my standard ringtone and notification by itself... it somehow seems to be connected to connecting the phone via USB in MTP or storage mode. Other users have the same problem so it´s not a phone issue, but rather ISC. Had the sam problem with a custom rom (Clean Blank Rom) so i guess it´s a core ICS problem. Tied anything, from putting the ringtones to the injternal SD or system/media and tried converting the ringtones from Mp3 to OGG ... still it changes occasionally.
Any hints on how to get to the base of this problem and solve it?
Thanks,
Kusie
P.S.: always do a full wipe before flashing a new ROM, so this is no cache issue

I was running on different ICS ROM version (all stock), but never had this issue.
ATM, I am on XWLPD and using mp3 files as standard ringtone and notification sound.
Maybe it is caused by a combination of different things, so that this issue does not affect all ICS users.

Most probably, yes... maybe it´s connected to a certain app that is causing this problem... yesterday evening I moved my current custom ringtones and notifications to /system/media/audio and deleted all other ringtones/notifications/alarms from the internal and external SD cards just to check. Did a reboot, changed the rintone and notification to my custom ones and charged the phone over night ... this morning I unplugged it from loader and checked my audio settings and:
ringtone: unknown ringtone (dammit!)
notification: Moonbeam (bummer! not my selected custom notification)
This is driving me crazy.
I´m thinking about going to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache - as this is recommended often in the custom Rom section AFTER installing a new rom to avoid troubles - only question is: will this result in any data or app loss?
EDIT: Ok I think I found the culprit: i seems my volume sceduler "Volume Ace" caused the change of ringtone and notify every time it switched to a different audio profile. Deinstalled it and all seems fine....

Using the SHV-E160L in Canada [ICS][Root][CWM][SMS]

I'm making this guide for anyone whose purchased a Korean Galaxy Note and have had a hell of a time getting it to work properly.
In Canada, the Note will only work with Rogers or Fido due to frequency and compatibility issues. Even other networks that support the Note will not work with a Korean Galaxy Note and flashing the telus modems found in other threads has not worked for me, causing the phone to get stuck in a restart loop.
First, upgrading to ICS:
Download the UF13 stock E160L firmware from this website:
http://pspmaster.tistory.com/180
For those with SHV-E160 S and K phones, stock firmwares can also be found on this website with a bit of searching
Flashing:
Put the Korean Note into download mode by holding down the volume down button + home button + power button
- The Note will then display a tonne of Korean text on-screen, press the volume up button to actually enter the download mode
Then run Odin in administrator mode (not really sure if it makes a difference but might as well), make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are the only checked items, click the PDA button and select the firmware file
Then click start and wait till the phone reboots, the loading screen will have a pink U+ logo and it may take some time.
Once it has booted, insert your microSIM card (yeah for some reason it uses a microSIM, other models don't seem to, wtf Korea?) and let it connect to the network. Once it connects you're good.
Rooting:
(courtesy of locomaniac, his thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671987)
Download these 4 files:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/u0rz0tuioj3irhz/cwm-160l-update.zip
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ds3sp7bulu54ckg/samsungE160recovery.tar
https://www.dropbox.com/s/lwuadwg4bx7wjro/Superuser-i717-ICS-signed.zip
https://www.dropbox.com/s/si43ikqpcdbzpod/Tegrak.rec.tar
Put the cwm-update160l-update.zip and the Superuser-i717-ICS-signed.zip onto your external SD card
Then shut off the phone and put it into download mode once again (vol down + home + power)
Once it's in download mode, flash the Tegrak.rec.tar in the same fashion as you did with the UF13 stock ROM, it will overwrite the recovery partition of your phone and your phone will then reset
Power down the phone once again and get it back into download mode, this time you'll flash the samsungE160recovery.tar which will install Clockworkmod Recovery into the recovery partition (not sure why you need the Tegrak recovery as well other than its ability to root the phone but do it anyways)
- Please note, if you only want root and not Clockworkmod Recovery which in my opinion, is stupid, do not flash the samsungE160recovery.tar, just go to http://pspmaster.tistory.com/181 and download the two files that correspond to your model, it does indeed have the E160S and E160K kernels as well. Copy the .zip file into your external SD card, then Flash the .tar file using ODIN then boot into recovery by holding the volume up + volume down + power button until the samsung logo appears at which point you'll have to release the buttons. It will boot into Tegrak recovery, select install from .zip, select the .zip file you downloaded and then restart the phone. Once restarted, you'll have to download Tegrak from the Google play store and open the app and select the root my phone option at which point your phone should have root access. Then download superuser from the Google play store and bam you're golden.
For those of you who want CWM Recovery, once the ODIN flash of samsungE160recovery.tar is done, it will reboot. Shut down the phone, then hold down the volume up and volume down buttons with the power button, let go of them all once the samsung logo appears to boot the phone into recovery mode. It will now be CWM Recovery rather than the Tegrak recovery, select install from zip and select cwm-160l-update.zip and install it. Once installed, you will need to select the reboot recovery option (might be under advanced menu, not sure). Or just power down the phone and reboot into recovery. Once it's in, you'll notice that CWM Recovery has been updated, but the menu options still look the same. Familiarity is good. Now choose install from zip and select the Superuser-i717-ICS-signed.zip file and install that.
Once you're done, reboot the phone and you will now have root access.
Fixing the SMS system:
(instructions courtesy of the crazy Chinese developers over at koxda http://koxda.com/thread-14201-1-1.html)
For some reason, Korea has a different messaging system than anywhere else in the world causing messages to send properly only if you're using a third party app like goSMS, and labeling everything you receive as from an unknown number. Obviously, this is ridiculous, so to fix that, you'll need the root access you just obtained as well as Root Explorer (File Manager), an app you can purchase off Google play or pirate with Mobilism. It's a wonderful app that will let you do anything you want to any file you want.
You'll also need mms.apk which is basically the international version of the messaging system from here:
http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/360753/Mms-apk.html
Copy this file to your SD Card
Now you'll want to open Root Explorer, and open the "system" folder then the "app" folder. Here, find 6 files that begin with SEC-MMS and delete them, you may have to press the mount r/w button at the top to get read write permission but do so and you'll be able to delete the files. Then, copy the mms.apk using root explorer from your external SD card into the system/app folder.
Once you're done, close everything and restart your phone.
Once it restarts, you'll notice that Android will attempt to upgrade something, that something is basically the phone installing the mms.apk for you and it will now appear in the applications list. Open the mms.apk, press the menu touch key and go to settings. Here, you need to change the text input method to unicode and then set the message centre number to +15149931123 for Fido, or +17057969300 for Rogers (can also try +17057969500). Make sure to type in that plus sign or it will not work properly.
*Note the messaging program may crash occasionally, keep trying and it should work, once you're done you'll be replacing the normal messaging system which has become unstable with something else.
That something else is the Handcent SMS app which you can download off Google play for free. Install it, then open the app, go to settings, application settings and press the Default Messaging application button, select All (SMS&MMS). Then press back, click notification settings and uncheck the Enable popup option.
AAAANNND YOU'RE DONE
If you have other Korean Note specific problems like the lack of secret menu options to repair your touch keys (which I had, goddamn you Samsung), send me a pm and I'll make another thread on how to fix it, it involves flashing temporary firmware that I really don't have the bandwidth to upload at the moment.
Mine is 160s and I just want CWM. But I see that the file is for 160L. Are you sure if its working for others than 160L?

I'd suggest flashing the tegrak recovery file for the E160S followed by the samsung160recovery, which should give you CWM at which point you can update CWM and root the phone. However, I have no idea if it'll work, so make sure to have a stock ROM on hand in case things go south for you.

Thanks man! Works for my E160K. Just one comment - looks like also you should have valid MSISDN on your SIM card in order to have it working.
You can check is it so or not in "Settings"=>"Phone Identity" - "Phone number" filed should show your actual nuber with "+" and all prefixes. If it's says "unknown" (and it's easily can) - you should write a correct number first on SIM card using "My phone number" application from market (little chance to work, btw), or other phone (Android-based device with CyanogenMod 7.x, Iphone or lots of SE phones can help).

Excellent point, I remember reading this on the Koxda forum, but I didn't bump into this particular problem myself. For my phone number, the information was under settings --> about phone --> status
I remember reading that the easiest fix was actually borrowing an iphone and with its prevalence these days, it should be easy to find someone who'll lend it for a few minutes. Also, since the e160L has a microsim, it should fit into an iphone 4 without any hassle

Thanks to the OP, I replaced the MMS app on my E160L (YAY!).
OK, I found an iPhone that let me 'write' my phone number to the SIM card. It's all done. BUT I can't send an sms with the newly installed stock MMS.apk. Actually, seems like I can send short messages: 70 characters and under using stock but anything longer fails. This seems to have to do with the original Korean models not being able to send anything more than 70 or 80 characters?
The caller ID issue is resolved though. I set the SMSC via the settings as well as via the secret menu accessed via typing 319 712 358 and then the password 0821.
Handcent works for sending and receiving. But I'd also like the stock messing app to work too!
Short of going back to the Telco to ask if they can fix it, anyone have any other suggestions?

Well, according to the original poster in koxda this is the best we've got now. you can completely ignore your stock, and replace it with handcent making it the default app through its options.

It's an inherent issue with Korean versions of the Note. The only way to get around this is to use the Handcent app. :-(

Unfortunately, this 70 character limit is coded into the Korean operating system and I haven't found a way to get past it... yet. The Chinese appear to be cooking up a custom ROM that uses the American operating system as its base which could get around that SMS character limit, will update when I succeed in getting it to work on my phone.

Media Scanner issue on all cm10 based roms

Hi,
This is a unique kinda problem (not very unique actually but only faced by couple of people) on any cm10 based rom I have tried till now.
The issue is that after I properly flash the rom (yes, I have double checked and flashed roms exactly following OP's instructions in all cases), I find that pre-existing media files (pictures, music and videos) are not getting scanned at all and added to the stock gallery/music app. if I take any picture or upload any media using MTP with the rom, its added properly.
So, I have tried all suggestions (fixing permission, full wipe, delete .nomedia etc) and still no solutions. I am sure that the issue is with mediascanner and I have monitored it and found that eventhough I manually stop and start it using "Rescan Media ROOT", after runnnig for like 20-30 secs, it just says restarting again and again.
Additionally I have also found that when connecting via MTP, eventhough the SD Card and internal memory has alot of stuffs, they are not shown. So I think issue can be with the this also.
I've grown very frustated over last few days due to this and I cannot use any of the amazing cm10 roms that we have and have to go back to my old ics rom.
PLEAZZZ HELP !!!
I also encourage all others who are facing similar issue to post here which would definately help in understanding and fixing the issue.
Thanks !!!
really man? CM10 is not even beta yet. its got bugs. deal with them or use ICS. Im on ICS still due to them.
Complaining about bugs in a build that is so far from being stable, that'll cause trouble.

If it would be a bug in the build only, then it should have affected all who are using it, why only few are getting affected.
And yes, I know its not right to complain about still in beta cm10 releases and thats why I'm not bothering any Devs for it. I have started this thread in Q&A so that guys who are facing the issue can match the different conditions/scenarios it is happening as I know its not a coincidence that its happening on some devices and not on others.

Its either s/w or h/w man.
And from what I can tell its s/w. so its on them. get logs, and send them in.
Entropy has said to set screen to stay awake while charging in dev options. Then plug your phone into charger and reboot then give it about 15 min. to scan. This is to keep media scanner from eating battery, but you could try it and see if has any effect on your issue.

Yeah , my issue is completely opposite of what most guys were facing (which is supposedly been solved in latest builds). In my case, mediascanner is not running at all to scan all media.

I would do a clean install of cm10, and NOT use the root media scanner app, and then follow what entropy said (keep display on while it scans).
Also, go to manage apps and clear data on DRM, Galley, and Media storage. Reboot and then play some music through your favorite file explorer. The Media Scanner will rebuild data in about 10 minutes to half an hour (try to keep screen on if you can)

Just tried this as I'm having the same problem, no luck. My music player was working fine yesterday then it decided to forget where all the songs were.
Same problem here with Task's AOKP latest(04/9)
I didnt have any problem with the previous release... BUT:
What i already did:
1- Full wipe to flash the new aokp release.
Tibe restore the rescanMedia Root... didnt touch it.
Media not working
2- Flash again without full wipe. Media not working
searched for .nomedia files. No results.
3- Flash again with another full wipe plus system format.
Checked with no Apps installed, media scan not working.
Installed RescanMediaRoot... didnt work.
After that i quit and decided to sleep. All my work on it was with the phone pluged. I dont know why but after unpluged a few musics show up. Only 40 of 2000. No pics.
4-Full wipe + chache format + System format + flash the previous AOKP release. MEDIA NOT WORKING.
was working yesterday...
5- Nandroid restore to number 3.
Thats where i am now. Stuck with the problem with aparently any JB release.
PS. Any new pic shows on gallery...

I'm still facing the issue with apparently any JB build till now .. right from the first one entropy released as cm10 previes build and trust me , I tried all (well almost)
Now , from your problem it seems that once with some particular way of flashing roms, we do something that causes media scan to get corrupt..
Tell me this .. before when it was working.. have u ever tried going to gallery and then settings ?? I never got that menu on any JB release...
After making too much efforts in vain to get it right , I have resorted to the alternatives :
1. Quickpic as replacement to Gallery app.. Keep the default gallery app running for camera..
2. Poweramp full version as replacement to Music.. It has a folder rescan option under setting and searches all ur music..
3. MX video player for video playback.. However I still find few codecs doesn't support audio till now.. but it is issue with all roms for all people afaik..
Let me know if you find a solution and get it working again...
I'm on AOKP for months. Never used any other rom. Never even installed to see what happens.
So, recently Task release his JB AOKP. It is 1 week older and he released 3 or 4 builds.
The first release i did not installed, The second one was released on same day and i did a full wipe to install it from AOKP ICS.
So far everything was working good.
Then came another release, the 30/08. Installed without a full wipe, just dalvik and cache, and everything was working fine.
From the build 30/08 to the build 04/09 i did bought Tibu Pro.
So i did a full wipe to install the 04/09 and the bug show up as you can see on my previous post.
The weirdest thing is full wiping + format System + format cache + install an old AOKP(30/08) and the bug are still there.
Could be that app RescanMediaRoot? Do you have it?
what do this app do to disable the scan? If we disable and uninstall what happens?
I do have setting options on gallery but when i click it nothing happens. No setting there.
Edited:
I just checked BetterBatteryStats and it looks weird. No kernel wakelocks... not even 1.
The most interesting was the Partial wakelocks:
MediaScannerService is the number one with 12min. Its running but nothing changes.
I dont like poweramp cuz the AwesomeBeats wont work with it.

I don't think "rescan Media root' app has anything to do with it .. actually
in my case , I never had this working since the start and at that time I didn't even knew about this app.
I have also noticed the partial wakelocks and if you go to running apps , you will see media storage running when u start a music/gallery app , but nothing happens..
I did tried alot to figure the problem out and seek help from all dev's that I can from this one and i9100 forum , but no results.. So finally I made peace with the workaround I mentioned...
One thing you can try in ur case is full wipe + format system/cache/data and then install a ICS rom.. after reboot.. try any JB rom again....
Good luck !! :good:

I'l try that and repport back.
The problem with media on the external SD card I believe is directly due to the change made in the location of the external SD card card within the directory. Many apps were built for ICS and GB and so when the scan is performed, the app isn't picking up the external SD card which used to be found within the internal SD. Now if media scanner isn't finding media within the internal SD card, that is a whole different story. I have media on my internal SD card and it has worked flawlessly. If you have music on the extsd and are using poweramp you can go into setting and check the box for the extsd outside the internal SD storage and it imports fine. Oh, and I'm running the latest AOKP with the Fluxxi kernel.

I do have pics on the Camera360 folder(internal SD) and it wont show on gallery.
I'll wipe everything and flash JB without the external. But i just find out something strange.
Im on recovery right now and using the file explorer of MrRobinson aroma to test it.
looks like the external its NOT on MNT folder. There are not and MNT folder on root. The external is called Sdcard and there is an emmc folder that looks empty.
Is it right? I really dont know nothing about the folder structure.
Edited:
Second time on Aromas file manager the emmc show all files now.
I belive all this means nothing.
Not all file explorers are equal. You need a root explorer to see the folders. Your music if on the internal, should be in the Music folder following the path home/sdcard/Audio/Music. Pictures on internal should be under home/sdcard/DCIM/Camera. When the external sd card is inserted it should show up in three places. At the root of the directory, you will find it as home/extSdCard, then under home/mnt/extSdCard and finally under home/storage/sdcard1. sdcard is the internal memory. I just moved photos to my extSdCard and rebooted the phone and media scanner didn't find them and setting don't exist on the gallery so you can't direct it to the new path of the extSdCard. So, I just replicated what you have been experiencing. If you move your photos to the Camera folder following the path I listed they should show up. The only reason my music works on Poweramp is because I can go to settings and check the sdcard1 folder under storage. Man I hope you don't mind all this rambling I'm doing and I hope I'm not insulting your intelligence.
No you are not. All this is new to me.
Thanks for all the info. It helped me.
Problem is gonne here.
What I did was:
1- clear cache and dalvik
2- data/factory reset
3- format system
4- format cache
5- format data
6- format internal SD
7- installed latest AOKP+ Gapps. Task's gapps don't come with Gmusic so I installed from Justin's Aroma with 1 or 2 inverted and Apex as a system app. But I did installed the normal gapps before try the Aroma.
First boot fine. I did config WiFi and gaccount slowly.
I didn't let the screen turn off.
When I first open the Gmusic everything was there.
Then I installed Titanium backup pro and did my full restore.
Tested another player , Mixzing, and was all there.
I forgot to save any pic on external since I do have Dropbox and it send it to my PC asap. So I didn't worry about pics.
Everything is working!!!!
Thank you for all your help.

Energy HD ROM without radio

Hello every one,
This is my first post here but I was trying to search Google in general and especially xda-developers but didn't find answer.
Ok, so I have new Galaxy S 3 from Polish provider Plus GSM. I rooted it and changed ROM at the beginning. I started with ENERGY HD 2.0 because it looks nice - and it's actually very good ROM imo, well done DakiX.
But one thing - why I can't find radio in it? I know, this might sound strange, but there is no radio. Yesterday I tried to change ROM, this time to MIUI Rayglobe. As you may probably know it has plenty of options before installation and there is one to install radio. I did it and it was working as charm so there is no problem with my device (as I hard some phones in US doesn't have this function at all).
Is it just my, I'm doing something wrong?
Thank you for any help and understanding.
Regards from Poland and best in 2013!,
Bartosz.
LOL. Move FmRadio.apk to system/app

That "lol" is because it was obvious and I should know it?
Everything is working great, thank you very much!
So, apparently not everything is OK
Like you said, I directly copied FmRadio.apk to system/app using root explorer. And Radio FM icon appeared in application screen.
I turn turn it on easily - no prob. Please check the attachments.
But after turning it on with a button - after couple of sec it's closing and I got notification "Radio FM application was stopped":
Strange fact - I can still hear noise in headphones, even after this error!
So I tried to reopen radio, but all I get is black screen and same notify after 5 sec.
I know this is weird, but maybe there is "another" RadioFM app? I really don't know what is going on here and why it doesn't want to work.
I'm the only one with such strange issue?

[Q] Edit the Ringtone list after deleting system ringtones?

In older roms, if you deleted the ringtones from the ringtones folder under system/media, the list would auto-update.
I'm running rooted MB1 and when I deleted a bunch of the system ringtones (because they are lame!) the list still shows them.
Are they hard-coded somewhere? Someone know how to edit that list?

You have to reboot so the system rescans and then it will notice that they are no longer there.
Yep - rebooted the phone multiple times - all the ringers still show up.
Did power button -> restart
Did power off, then power on
No difference - it seems they are hard coded in MB1?
I was running LJ7 and I think they cleaned up on a reboot.
And yes - I'm running a USA Sprint ROM - I posted this in the wrong Galaxy section but I doubt this setting is rom specific?

I just looked at it and they are in the same place they have always been. Try wiping the delvic cache and reboot
Wayne Tech S-III
Did a reboot to recovery
Wiped Cache and Dalvik cache
Rebooted - all the deleted ring tones still show in the list.
Where the heck is this info stored?

Could be that Samsung has them somewhere else as well. To be honest I am not to sure at this point. I have not used an OEM rom in a long time.

Delete how ???..
I just tested delete beep once reboot .
Settings ringtones no beep once its gone .
Location system media audio ringtones
jje
I wonder if this is just for rom MB1 onward?
Anyone with newer ROM's able to verify?
