[Q] Edit the Ringtone list after deleting system ringtones? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In older roms, if you deleted the ringtones from the ringtones folder under system/media, the list would auto-update.
I'm running rooted MB1 and when I deleted a bunch of the system ringtones (because they are lame!) the list still shows them.
Are they hard-coded somewhere? Someone know how to edit that list?

You have to reboot so the system rescans and then it will notice that they are no longer there.

Yep - rebooted the phone multiple times - all the ringers still show up.
Did power button -> restart
Did power off, then power on
No difference - it seems they are hard coded in MB1?
I was running LJ7 and I think they cleaned up on a reboot.
And yes - I'm running a USA Sprint ROM - I posted this in the wrong Galaxy section but I doubt this setting is rom specific?

I just looked at it and they are in the same place they have always been. Try wiping the delvic cache and reboot
Wayne Tech S-III

Did a reboot to recovery
Wiped Cache and Dalvik cache
Rebooted - all the deleted ring tones still show in the list.
Where the heck is this info stored?

Could be that Samsung has them somewhere else as well. To be honest I am not to sure at this point. I have not used an OEM rom in a long time.

Delete how ???..
I just tested delete beep once reboot .
Settings ringtones no beep once its gone .
Location system media audio ringtones

I wonder if this is just for rom MB1 onward?
Anyone with newer ROM's able to verify?

rom build issue : user apps disappearing on reboot

i am currently building a rom for the samsung captivate built off 2.3.5.
The base im using is stock - deodexed/ ziped / minorly changed
this base flashes and works just fine!
what i am doing to it:
remove bloat.
- at&t apps,
- protips.apk
- remove broken swype
- remove stock email (not gmail)
- removed stock launcher
change to hacked camera.apk
remove bootsound
remove shutdown sound
change bootanimation
added user apps in data/apps
added widget picker in system/app
changed default wallpaper in framework_res.apk
changed install script
changed CSC
custom twwallpaperchooser
everything works fine through the install.
but durring the "setup" on first boot " phone setup wizard " will force close right at the step where you setup your google sign in.
BUT THATS NOT THE PROBLEM, (just the first sign of it)
the real problem is any apps installed after flashing do not show up in data/apps
any apps installed through the flash are there, but any installed after ARENT.
and no they arent on the SD card.
the apps will slowly disappear after installing one by one.
when i reboot THEY ALL DISAPPEAR!!!
it seems that the apps install to cache or memory.
as the memory gets cleared or you reboot, they get wiped away!
i have tried various things to fix this
i have rebuilt my rom MANY times.
with and without my framework res changed file
with and without my custom install script
with and without removing stock launcher
with and without changed CSC files.
with and without twwallpaperchooser
if i flash the base i was working from again, all is good.
this only seems to be an issue when i flash data/apps from the zip file. however i have used a script from a rom that successfully flashed data/apps before without this issue, so i do not think it is a permission problem....
im stuck and lost.
more specific, rewritten description i emailed to a few friends
holy hell i bet youve been busy...
me too, i finally have my rom built. for KH2 KJ1 and KJ2 !!
have it down to an easy process now. install script working!
but im having one final issue and cant find any useful info on it anywhere and its very specific
**I know KJ1 and KJ2 install any app to the SD if possible by default. any app on SD will not be affected by this issue ***until it is moved to phone
if I build my rom to install apps to data/app (through cwm flash )- any app that gets installed after (through market or sideload) will slowly disappear after some use or immediately after reboot. they also will not show up in data/app or system/app when installed ** once again not including apps on SD. and if apps on SD are moved to data/app they do not end up there. they disappear.
this leads me to beleive that they are installing to cache or memory, as the memory gets cleared or the phone reboots. they are gone!
if i build my rom without user /data/apps (and without that part of the script).
everything is fine. any app installed after shows up in data/app and is still there after reboot.
i have also used unmodified scripts with and without the package_extract ("data", "/data")
that have been known to work with the original rom they were taken from. without the issue i am seeing.
so i do not think it is a script / permission issue not allowing the system to write new data to that location. but i could be wrong.
my rom is ready for release once i can get this last part figured out. otherwise ill have to release with no user apps... any input would be greatly appreciated.
thanks again!

one search i came across mentioned something about possibly not being converted to rfs, but I have flashed to stock with re-partitioning ( rfs for sure ) and the rom and kernel i am building does not support it so that shouldn't be an issue.
from what other rom builders have told me this is an issue with gingerbread roms.
have apps copied to SD card and ask users to install manually.
Dude just found this post....sorry i was busy with KJ2
glad you got a tempory fix
ya you gave me the fix in the PM! LOL

[Resolved] Play Store & Mobile Network force closing, can't send/receive texts/calls

[Resolved] Play Store & Mobile Network force closing, can't send/receive texts/calls
Hi there!
I installed the Resurrection Remix ICS AOKP ROM v.1.8.1 on my unlocked Galaxy S II i9100 a couple of days ago after factory resetting it, wiping the SD card, cache, etc.; completely getting rid of everything from the previous Resurrection Remix ICS ROM I had on there before.
Spent a lot of time customizing it over the past couple of days and not had any problems. I have a UK GiffGaff SIM which runs on the 02 network. There is a GiffGaff app on the Play Store that copies the correct information into your clipboard so that you can go through the steps of creating an APN easy as pie. However, whenever I go to Settings/More/Mobile networks a dialog box immediately pops up stating "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." and puts me back to my app drawer. I spent a while trying to fix it, then loaded up the Play Store to look for APN apps, but whenever I try to download an app it comes up with the same message above with "Settings" replaced with "Google Play Store".
I've literally spent hours and hours getting extremely frustrated and would be very appreciative of some help as I currently cannot send or receive texts or calls, cannot use the internet without Wi-Fi and cannot download any apps.
Things on the top of my head that I've tried are deleting the vending.apk (Play Store) in the system/app directory and copying another version of the store over, clearing caches of numerous apps, clearing Dalvik cache, wiping cache partition in CWM, restored some apps and settings from my Titanium Backup backup (which replaced some of my customization that I worked hours on ) and searched for ages for the APKs of some APN apps. I even wiped data/factory reset the phone a few minutes ago, but I still can't access Mobile networks to input the APN and now Google Play Store isn't even in my damn app list anymore!!
Can someone help please?
Edit: Managed to get the Play Store back, downloaded an APN app successfully, opened it and it force closes!
RESOLVED: If anyone else has similar problems, just download the ROM that's installed onto your phone, install it again, boot into CWM, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik cache, fix permissions and reboot! Thanks JJEgan and Sun90

Ohhhh myyyyyyyyy goddddddddd. I love you. Haha, downloaded and installed the ROM, now everything works completely fine!! Thank you so much I'll remember that tip for the future
By the way, are some of the textures and backgrounds in this ROM supposed to be.. messed up? Like, some menus such as Settings have completely dark checkered backgrounds which look ugly o_o And when I pull down the notification bar, there are a lot of blue diagonal textures which again, look ugly.
Is this just me or is it the ROM? If it's the ROM, are these textures being worked on?
Thanks again

Wow, I had no idea we could do this! Thanks a lot, haha, it all looks awesome now! One last thing if that's okay How can I customize what I see after pulling the notification bar down? I done a little Googling just now but kept finding apps that just customize the actual bar and not the bad textures after pulling it down.
Are there mods for that too?
Edit: Ah, will do! Thanks for informing me

(NOT NOOB Q.) Lost volume and brightness control and no lockscreen...Ideas ?

Hi all;
as someone already know, I made some ultra cleanings in my ROM (as in my signature). Used system try and see what happens mostly I have deleted some of apks on /system/app and rebooted if it could affect something that I need... Suceeded and my ROM got about 10MB of free RAM extra, so I was satisfied Also made a custom framework, modded the resources (not UOT etc.); just replaced some image files.
Hovewer, few days I found that my ringtone volume is too quiet. So I went into settings > volume and what? FC ! So I tried many other settings and also found that same is with brightness control.
Ï decided that I deleted something that is related with settings - looked into deleted apks in my backup and didnt found anything that yould be related with it... So finally copied back all of apks as are on default ROM from Wolfbreak and rebooted and fixed permissions. But, as I was surprised, FCs were still present ! So it was dissapointed very much and tried to reflash the whole ROM - FCs still present ! -> made Full wipe and reflashed another ROM and FCs still present althought FULL WIPE !!!
Finally, first totally dissapointed with Android behavior, restored the whole backup of ROM, which I made first. Happened two another amazing things:
- lost lockcreen (phone doesnt lock; after bootup lockcreen appears once...)
- lost items in shutdown menu - now I have only Shutdown and Reboot option...
- home button doesnt work (back and menu works), long or short click
So, I am asking for android experts What are these things related to files? I modded framework-res.apk and deleted and restored apks in /system/app. Nothing more...
So I need to point which apks or res are sources are related to this? I will check permissions or try to restore it. Or even where are stored data for responsible apks for these FCs...
Any ideas are surely welcome !!!
The lost option in the shutdown menu are frawework-res,related,and birghtness and volume are settings.apk
I suggest you to restore the framework and settings.apk, put them in your sd card, copy them to system, inside system give proper permissions, and after that mode them to its places, reboot in xrec, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions, and then reboot.

Yes, know this. Tried it already, but in other order.
Now tried in this orded you suggested and after reboot I lost also PIN unlock page (so phone is out of network) and battery icon shows not empty battery (charged it few hour ago).
It seems that also another files are related to these problems, but cant imagine what else - tried almost everything.
Its weird... I am flashing again stock ftf...

[Q] [Question] Multiple Entries of Downloaded Ringtones & Notifications

Hola,
I have recently noticed that each time I reboot my Note I717 the previously selected ringtone and notification sounds revert to the factory default. When I enter Settings -> Sounds I see the active selection reads "Unknown Ringtone." I go to the list of those ringtones/notifications available to check why and I find that the name of the downloaded ringtone/notification file has been replicated. Of the multiple files only the bottom-most on the list will actually play the file. Right now I have four entries for yy downloaded ringtone; three do nothing, but the last on the list selects the correct file. The same is true for the notification sound file.
Admittedly, this is not a big deal, but is annoying the hell out of me. Has anyone else encountered this situation? Is there an obvious solution of which I am unaware? Anyone care to venture a guess?
BTW, my Note is rooted, but is AT&T stock all the way, Version 4.0.4, BB UCLF6, Kernel 3.0.8.
Further info: I first loaded the ringtone/notification files on the SD Card, but recently moved the file to the internal memory. That change had no effect on the situation.
Regards,
Bubba
SAME HERE!
Have the exact same problem with my Infuse since I upgraded to ICS...Will get back to you if I finally find an answer!
settings-->> apps-->> all-->> media storage-->> clear data-->> force stop -->> REBOOT !!
Something similar happens with mine. When swapping batteries out it exhibits this. If i just reboot using the toggle it doesn't happen. Also, it only happens with custom ringtones. If i use stock ringtones i have no problems.
I have tried what the post above mine suggests but problem returns as soon as i swap batteries again.
Thanks. This worked. Haven't tried swapping batteries yet.

That worked - at first. After the reboot, the default ringtone was listed as "ATT Play-on" and the notification was "sherbet". However, when I tried to change the ringtone to one I had created, it went back to being an unknown ringtone. The phone is the I777 and the OS is ICS, both from ATT. The ringtone is a 29 second MP3 file I created.
I did go back and try the reboot sequence again after the first attempt and it did clear it back to the default ringtone/notification, but as soon as I changed either, it was listed as unknown again. Is there a special format for ringtones?
Thanks!

[Q] Fonts constantly downloading

I upgraded my SII to ICS. I then discovered that I could change the fonts on the phone, so I installed an app called Fontomiser SP and downloaded a font called AppleGaramond.htm. I decided I didnt like the font, so I deleted it, and uninstalled the Fontomiser SP app from the device.
Now, I find that every hour or so, I get a notification that AppleGaramond.htm download is complete, I look at my list of files in "Downloads" and the file is there again. So, I delete it, then I get another notification that download is complete, and there it is again in my downloads. If I don't delete it, I end up with several versions of the files sitting in my "Downloads" folder.
How can I stop it constantly downloading this file ?
(By the way, I am a complete novice on the android system, so if possible, please keep it simple !)

go to recovery mode wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache and fix permission and reboot the device and see it worked or not
For rebooting to recovery: press volume up, home button, and power button simultaneously and wait for the phone to reboot. Now you have to do what sahil said above.
For cleaning dalvik cache, enter "advanced" menu first.
