How does one disable thermal throttle - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running on a kernel and am getting reboots when the device gets too hot. Any scripts for me to run?

disabling thermal throttle will permanently damage your processor, its specifically meant to safeguard the processor from higher temperature that it cant handle. u have to change it at the time of kernel compilation if you still need a fried cpu

There is absolutely no way you are getting reboots because your device is too hot.
It gets throttled at 80c first, then at 90 or 100 and doesn't switch off til 120c.
There's no way you are hitting 120c.
Your reboots are due to something else.

Hold a cell phone - anything, actually - that is at 120ºC is pretty much a lot worse than sticking your hand into boiling water: you'd have terrible burns.
Are you using the phone on a very humid, wet environment?

That doesn't apply, it isn't the phone that is 120c, its the CPU.
I held my galaxy nexus as it shut down because it hit 110c, I didn't get burnt.

you are wrong
TTC does not read temps its guessing the temp and it guessing it so wrong.
try to cool down your S3 and run a stability test then run the same test without cooling.
check the CPU speed with CPUspy.
TTC kicks in at the same time even if you cool your device down or not.
TTC has nothing to do with real world temps!
i have a Nexus 10 and i must take this ugly bug out of the tablet.
it stinks!
anyone knows how to disable Thermal Throttling Control or higher the limit?
it must be the same settings for every samsung device.

Is it supposed to work the same way for both of them? As far as I know nexus 10 doesn't have a temperature sensor, is that the same case with, S3?

[Q] overheating problem

hi guys i find that when i use the phone for a little bit like on voice call or playing a game the phone become literally super hot and its reached 45 degrees c according to my battery indicator app is that dangerous and is anyone else had the same problem ?
my sgs2 also overheats! i don't know why
Whatever electric device You switch on and make it work it gets warm. If You make it work HARD it gets warmer to hot.
If You work it in summer and direct sunshine it gets hotter than under the same workload at the Northpole at Xmas.
CPUs produce heat under workload the same do screens. The higher the frequencies the hotter they will get.
It is simple physics. So what ?

i understand that the cpu and other hardware can produce heat however i would have thourght there would be some sort of heat regulator that would underclock it to reduce the temp like in setcpu when rooted. at what do u think is the highest temp the phone could go before killing it self ?

Normal cpus can go to 70 - 80 degrees C. I would say now if the phone doesn't go over like 55 degrees it's fine.
I don't think this is normal personally. My phone has become hot a few times now and I think it was wifi sharing process causing it both times.
I ended this process using the System Panel app and carried on using the phone in the same way and the phone cooled right down again.

I have frozen wifi sharing so I don't know. But my phone almost never gets hot except if I download big files.
the reason the phone gets hot is because the phone is very cramped and cant dissipate heat effectively . the simplest example is a laptop and a desktop, even though both may have the same configuration a laptop gets much hotter than a desktop because it cant dissipate heat effectively as a desktop which has much bigger heat sink

[Q] charging paused because battery too hot

I am no my second GS2 and the issue persists.
Issue:
When charging overnight, the battery gets extremely hot. So much it warps the sim card. The first phone overheated until it died. Last night the second phone overheated until the warning message “charging paused due to temp” came up. I do use a CPU intensive app that uploads files to my server when plugged in. (so it doesn’t drain the battery). I have used all these apps on my old captivate with no issues with overheating.
I have tried Unnamed 2.2.1 and ICSreweD 1.6.1 roms, but the battery still overheats. Unless this might be a faulty batch from the store, what areas should I look into? At the end of the day, I would really like to continue to allow the app to run while charging. Especially since I have used it with less powerful phones prior. I have read others have this same issue with the GS2 but no solutions as of yet. Is there a different ATT phone that does not have this issue?
Silly question, but I know many who do this...
Do you place your phone under your pillow overnight while charging?
When charging and running a app that requires high cpu usage will overheat the battery. So close it at night while charging.
Damn warping the card. **** that's bad.
One time at football camp i put my shoulder pads in my ass
If you need to keep the app running while plugged in all night, what about using a plugged in profile in set CPU to throttle to 800 mhz Max or something...

Set it with setcpu or tasker. It's likely running at 1200 mhz all night right now. (assuming you don't OC). Try throttling it down to 500 or 800 mhz, it should help. Not sure if there's anything that limits specific apps though.

If you absolutely have to leave your phone performing such intensive tasks all night, this is what I would try.
As twiggums said, it is probably running at 1200 all night and just melting itself. Unlike most computers, everything in our phones is passively cooled. Something else you might try is removing the battery cover (and any phone case) and placing a fan blowing directly on it. I know that is extreme, but so is what is happening to your phone.
Hope this helps.
I have also experienced this and it's really annoying. I couldn't love a human child as much as I love this phone but the overheating is not cool. I was using my phone to navigate while charging and once it got so hot that it locked up and another time it paused the charging due to thermal issues.

I had to do that sometimes when downloading some big files and tethering. Lol
Since my PC is caseless it wasn't that hard pointing a 120mm fan to it.
And yes it did work.

IIRC entropy mentioned some time ago that he throttles CPU to 800 mhz when using nav and charging...keeps it cooler and allows for slight charge rather than drain...
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
Yeah I'd suggest possibly throttling the CPU. I charge my phone while driving and stream Pandora and use navigation. I've got mine set to Max out at 500 while screen off and it works fine.
Ideally our phones should be able to handle sustained 1200 mhz. But then when you add a case and the heat generated while charging I guess it's too much for some. Guess it's the price we pay to have a beast of a CPU
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
thanks for the tips on throttling the cpu. i had thought about that and will probably do it but i still thinks its really lame that we have to do this. i dont even have a case on my phone. what are people who arent rooted and cant underclock their cpus supposed to do? oh well i guess
I have started to notice this on my phone. it happens when I'm in the car only though. Here's the situation.
It seems anytime I run Navigation my phone cranks up in heat to the point that I can't touch it. Is this a ROM/Kernel issue, or a problem in the phone itself?

Well if your sig is correct and you're running at 1600 MHZ, I'd say that's probably why. Running at that speed for prolonged periods is likely to generate some heat.

I run Set CPU and my sig isn't correct. Well, the 1600 mhz isn't at least. I have it capped at 1000. It's just odd that I can multi task any number of applications without a problem. I use navigation and instantly, the only application I can use is that one. Running Pandora or the phone or the phone interrupts pandora or the phone interrupts navigation and I get this error and the screen gets untouchable.

Hmm possibly reflash your ROM. I can run nav and Pandora fine, and my phone limits my CPU to 500mhz while screen is off. Or at least try reinstallin maps/nav, sounds like its gobbling up way too much CPU for some reason.

I told Pandora to not turn off the screen. I would think that Nav would do that natively or else it would negate the purpose of it. I wonder if maybe telling Pandora to keep the screen on and Nav keeping it on natively makes it think really hard and heat up.

[Q] Heat issues?

My new TP seems to get rather hot. Is this an issue? It seems like the heat is worse when surfing and changing at the same time.
I would say that there may be an issue. Mine never got above 92 degrees. But its almost always at room temp ( around 70 degrees). Now my phone gets up to 104 if surfing the web on 3g so I guess it depends on the device.

I am not using any additional hardware. I am just viewing websites.
I estimate that the temp is rather high. Not just warm, but hot. Most of the heat was located in the middle of the back cover.
Do you have an app or widget that display core temps?
mine is getting hot also while browsing the web, and battery is getting low pretty fast. this only happens while using android stock browser.
after switching to another browser the heating stops almost instantly....

mine get hot only when charging, I have mine clocked at 1.6Ghz on preformance mode, and it doesnt get hot when playing games.
it more noticeable when not useing the dock, I think it charges mush slower and thats the only reason is not getting as hot.
of you look at the design of the Prime the battery spans the lenght of the prime, so the heat will be middel but over the lenght of the tablet. if its the CPU from overclocking or over use, the hot spot will be top left middel.. ( if that make sence)
here is a pic of the board..

same here basically. plus nothing to be worried about. Prime has a fail safe in it THST if it gets too hot/overheat, it'll automatically throttle the CPU speed down so it can cool off and reduce the CPU temps. prime will never overheat out of control and burn itself up.

[Q] Cpu thermals (80c)

Ive had my Galaxy for a while now but lately i have felt it get hotter, and downclocking while gaming.
Ive tried stress testing my phone at 1.6ghz with a voltage of 1250000mv for under 5 min, and cpu temps skyrocket to 80 from idle of 45-50
I have sent my phone in for repair of the home button a couple of times where they changed the whole screen and bezzel.
The question is could they have screwd up the themal pad/paste if the galaxy s iii even has one?
And what kind of temps are "normal" under 100% load?

Well for a start remove all kernel tweaks and see how it performs as its meant too. See what normal usage results you get......let's face it, you overclock it, then run a stress test, it's bound to get quite hot!

Depends on his chip, what other tweaks he has done etc etc, so yes, it entirely has a point....he wants to know if they messed up the repair, and the only way to test that is run stock......what do you think they will say in the repair centre when he walks in and says it got hot when overclocking and stress testing
Same result with stock... screw it im gonna send it back and ask for a new white model... :silly:

Your phone comes with built in protection to throtle down the CPU when it gets too hot in order to avoid frying it. With that mod what you did was to tell the phone to forget about throtling down and to simply run as fast as it needs to no matter the temp. This makes it a lot harder for the phone to cool down on its own (since the CPU is still producing a lot of heat) and I guess I don't have to tell you how bad heat can be for electronics...

I feel sorry for all the Sprint employees and LG for the users that blindly turn off thermal throttling, having no clue what it does, and then blame the phone for being defective.
Recently some of my games for updated and now running a lot cooler. I think most game still ramped up the gpu way too high than why needed to run the game smoothly.

Even when I punish this phone it just gets slower, never really hot at all. I used to be afraid of burning my hands on my SGS II, but this never gets hot enough for me to worry at all.
So if my G2's cpu gets to 70 degrees and battery about 43 degrees in 10 minutes of playing gtasa, is that bad enough for service?

You know my phone got really hot with my 3 to old playing Angry Birds Go the other day and I was pretty sure this had something to do with it. The only thing is that the way this is worded is confusing as heck. Do I need to have this switch in the on or off position? High temperature property off? Seems like the ON position is correct so it will throttle down the CPU accordingly.
