This has been one problem that's plagued me with both the Evo 4G and now the 3D. Barnacle works but makes the internet painfully slow(er) and Wireless Tether for Root works on 4G but not 3G. Well, I finally figured it out. I'm not going to go into the details because I'm not quite sure I understand exactly what it's doing yet, but it comes down to Sprint's MTU and the tether apps expecting it to be something other than it is. All that is needed to fix it is to double the MTU from 1472 to 2944, and for whatever reason Wifi Tether will start acting right again. One side effect of this is that your ping will go up by about 20-40% but it may also help increase your download speeds ever so slightly too.
First you'll want to download the latest wifi tether from either the market or their site here.
Once you have that installed you'll want to open up an adb shell and, as root, type: setprop persist.data_netmgrd_mtu 2944
After that is set, toggle airplane mode on and off so that it uses the new value.
Next open Wifi Tether and go to Menu -> Settings -> enable Routing Fix
And that's it, wifi tether should work at full speed and the settings will stick with you after reboots. The value is originally set from the build.prop but as long as you don't wipe your data partition it should last.

xHausx, I followed your directions and now wireless tether works on both 3G and 4G. However, I now have a wakelock issue. I uninstalled wireless tether and the wakelock issue is gone. Reinstall wireless tether, do your method, and then wakelock issue is back.
Phone has only stock applications plus wireless tether. Using stock ROM and kernel. Any ideas?
Haus, check out my thread weird way to get wireless tether ... Maybe it can help you figure out what's going on.

This did work for me, but... I'm not sure you've found all the issues just yet. I ran about a dozen speed tests from speedtest.net and WiFi Tether seems very inconsistent and slow. Barnacle on the other hand is fast and smooth. I'm in a fringe area and Barnacle gives me 400k to 500k speed that is quite consistent. WiFi Tether on the other hand, while it does now work with this workaround, is about 100k up and down and it is very inconsistent and it stalls a lot. I'll stick with Barnacle for now because it seems to work well with no issues.

This is great find. But are you running AdHoc or AD.
After this workaround I still can't get Wifi Tether to work. It connects gets IP address slowy on client and then just sits there. Data won't transfer.
The Sprint Hot Spot works fine on 3G, but I didn't test it for speed.

Did anyone get this work around to work?
If so are you running Ad-Hoc or AD?
Does it work on both 3G and 4G?
Here is a flashable zip made by JoelZ9614. It unlocks the stock hotspot (shows up as a router, not ad-hoc) and unlocks 3D sense homescreen. Works on 3G and (reportedly) 4G.
xhaux,
Thanks for this, preliminary testing shows it works. I would suspect that Barnacle does something similar? What made you choose the MTU value you chose?

I believe Barnacle probably sets it to the usual default of 1500. If you set it to that wifi tether will work but it is painfully slow(er). I just doubled the E3D's default and hoped it would be the right size when the packets got fragmented(split into smaller chuncks). If someone has the time to play around with it some youthey could probably find a better MTU that would allow for even better speeds.

For sure, it is originally set in the build.prop and once set the value is, IIRC, saved under /data/system.

I think Barnacle changes this setting to 1500 by default, which works but is an extremely inefficient setting to use on Sprint's 3G. Hence why it is so slow.

It's still using the stock MTU then. I'm pretty sure what's happening is the data's being lost in a PMTUD black hole. It'll work when transferring small amounts of data but when you start using more bandwidth it gets flooded with error messages and starts ignoring you.
Check to see if it's changing it by replacing setprop with getprop, if it did set correctly try rebooting your phone or turning airplane mode on and off.
Encryption?
I've got the 3.1 beta2 installed and did this tweak. Wifi tether works fine for me with encryption disabled. But with it enabled, I can't get internet access. I'm sure I'm using the right passphrase and my laptop connects to tether. But I can't get data. Barnacle tether works fine for me with wep enabled. Any suggestions? Thanks!
I just rooted my hboot 1.5 last night, I have superuser and all that stuff, but when I try to use my wireless tether app but my other device I'm trying to connect to my 3D keeps saying obtaining ip address and won't connect to it, any help please?

I just rooted mine today. And I am noticing that getting a client to pull a DHCP assigned IP is somewhat quirky.
I got my Transformer tablet to pull an IP couple of times now. Initially I dsiabled running apps that may be trying to use wifi - Xmarks, Skype, etc... So try nuking some running apps.
It may be that I merely need the tell the transformer to forget the 'AndroidTether' SSID, and reconnect to it. That seemed to work the second time, I'm going to try with my some other clients and see if I can make a tad more relaible.

could always try barnacle tether as well, that one works for me when I couldn't get wireless tether working.
barnacle works well for an adhoc... i also have a problem connecting at home with any wifi app even the hotspot hack.. it was driving me bonkers but... when i wasn't home, it would work...
i finally came to the conclusion that because i live in a condo and there are 10 different wireless networks. those routers seem to squash my evo3d's network.. did the same with the OG evo.. making it hell to try to tether without a usb cable... so guys if your in an area with alot of wifi networks try wifi tethering elsewhere and see if it works.. hope this helps..
Just thought I'd chime in here and say the reason your not connecting to your wifi app of choice or the hotspot hack is not due to there being multiple wireless networks around you.

This could definitely be it, I have a Vizio TV that came with a wireless subwoofer and rear surround speakers. For the life of me I couldn't figure our why my laptop could never connect to my home router when I was in that room. Some days it would work great but most it wouldn't connect or I would get terrible throughput. I even replaced the router once. It never dawned on my since I almost always have the TV on when I'm on my laptop that the wireless subwoofer would be the problem until I turned the TV off and my network instantly improved. Turned TV back on and crap network. I unplugged the wireless card from the TV and haven't had a problem sense.

That just means your sub woofer may have not been magnetically shielded. Also you could have just changed your routers frequency or just moved it to a different location. But a wireless sub woofer interfering with a router is understandable. But not being able to connect to a wireless network because of to many wireless networks is not true.

update to my problem,
i downgraded to 107, it now says "internet connection", and i noticed my pc and mobile phone is "paired" or linked, but when i tried to use internet, it does not do anything and the internet now says "no internet", i see that on tether app there is some upload and download going on like .4kb once in a while (then it will say "no internet" on my wifi ), i cant browse the net, if i click diagnose (int explorer) it says DNS............. again......
this is what I encountered.

Of course I was! haha. I freaking love being able to tether for free!
Ever since my Samsung Moment in Dec of 2010!!!
So I have searched and searched to no avail so I had to try and open a new thread.
My problem is when tethering my Evo 3d to my Playstation 3 (without a computer) I get a NAT Type 3 (strict). I can still play online with NAT 3 but with limitations, I can't join in party's with my friends and matchmaking takes some patience. I am looking for some help on how to get an Open NAT Type 2 (Type 2 means connected wirelessly with no problems).
It used to work just fine right after I rooted but then I flashed a new rom (Senseless from scrosler if I remember right) and then it would connect as Type 3.
From what I have read I think it could have something to do with the Kernel but I feel I have tried every combination I could think of. It could also be the version of wifi tether. It could also need some port forwarding... Is there any way to forward ports with any apps while using wifi tether?
Here is my phone specs
Evo 3D
Android version 2.3.3
Hboot 1.5
Rom- Omj's Evo 3D v1.1
Kernel - 2.6.35.10-gcb1cf83 (stock)
Wifi Tether version 3.1-beta8
I have routing fix checked and mss clamping checked.
I am hoping there are some Playstation users out there beside myself that can benefit from any help with this issue. Thank You

Man, I had that issue too when I used to tether with my Evo 4G. I never could find an easy way around it. Just had to deal.
It was sad too. My connection was plenty fast.
As I remember, a buddy of mine had to do some hackery to his DSL router to even get that off strict, so I can only imagine it is pretty tough with a phone.
Can you USB tether to a laptop (or desktop), and bridge the connection with the ethernet port, and connect your PS3 to that?
That's what I used to do in Windows Mobile, before wireless tethering was a thing

I was wondering, Do you have a router that you can be flashed with ddwrt? I know you mentioned that you didn't have a computer but maybe go by a friends house for initial setup if your router is compatible?
It might be possible to set up a router as a wireless repeater. It would be
wireless phone signal to wireless router to ps3. This would only prove useful depending
on your current connection speed though. It might be something to look in to. If you do
have a way to set that up I could try to help as much as I could.
I currently use a wireless signal to a wireless router and
have it set up as a repeater.

I have computers at work that I can use to set things up so that wont be a problem. I just don't have one at home to use. I think I could definitely look into that because the logic sounds pretty solid from what I know. I wonder if what ever problem the phone is having would just get sent through to the repeater as well but who knows. I might have to PM you if I decide to go that route and I get stuck.

Even though your speed for dl/ul is really fast, ping times, packet loss, etc are probably what is causing your nat 3 type. Like the other poster said with his evo 4g, there is nothing you can do and will have to live with it. You either have to get a dsl/cable line or be stuck like you are currently.

I tried this method with no luck. Still Nat Type 3. I couldn't get it to work with the routing fixed unchecked either. Did you do the manual set up or the easy set up on the PS3. In your pictures wouldn't the Primary and Secondary DNS have to be the same as what is specified in the Wifi tether app? Something doesn't seem quite right but maybe I am just doing it wrong. Any more ideas would be helpful.

I've been trying to get my Epic 4G Touch running the wifi tether app 3.1-beta6 (only version I am aware works for my phone) but the View can't see the wifi connection. Perhaps something to do with the way wifi tether is running? Ad-Hoc mode? Anybody know of a work around?
I am running Wifi Tether v3.1 beta 2 on my Droid Charge with no issues. I currently have mine set to the Samsung Fascinate for the device. You could maybe try changing the device to see if that does anything. I know I was having issues connecting one day and I just had to uninstall and reinstall the app and it started working fine again.
Which type of wifi connection your phone presents is device dependent. Some can do infrastructure which will work, others can only do ad-hoc , which the Flyer and most android devices will not see without a modified wifi supplicant file. If your phone tether cannot be seen on your Flyer you need to install the wifi supplicant mentioned in other answers in the forum, do a search for supplicant . That is the only way to fix this, and you must be rooted.
I use Wireless Tether app on my rooted Droid X and the view sees it just fine. Connects without any issues.

If your phone tether cannot be seen on your Flyer you need to install the wifi supplicant mentioned in other answers in the forum, do a search for supplicant . That is the only way to fix this, and you must be rooted.

I'm quoting DigitalMD because it appears this information may need to be repeated. I'm fairly certain that most Samsung devices are limited to ad-hoc only and that makes all the difference.
I'm downloading the wifi ad hoc enabler now to try this out...
I have a rooted Nexus S 4g on ICS- and wifitether works fine for my ipad2... but the HTC View doesn't even see the signal. Is this a carrier issue with the View, an HTC specific thing? I'm surprised the iPad had no issue as I've had plenty of public wifi connection issues...
Just trying to understanding the issues at play better here.

I run WIFI Tether v3.1-beta7 on my EVO 3D with no issues at all, View connects without hesitation. There are some settings that need to be set, though I don't know if this applies to all devices. I had to enable MSS clamping and Routing fix.

So I installed the latest 3.1-beta 11 to my Nexus S4g to try this before I go to other lengths to get the view to see it... but I don't see a MSS clamping options- only routing fix. I'm also trying device profile set to Evo 4g since that's what you had... still nothing...
Does it have anything to do with being on ICS on my Nexus? If you're doing adhoc from your evo (assuming...) why would the view not see ad hoc in my case?

Right, but to do that, i need the View to be rooted correct? The point i was trying to make was it seemed like some people got this to work without needing to do that...unless i misunderstood...
EDIT: The following worked for me- Fox Fi on the phone, "PDA NET for Tablet" application for the View. activate both... No settings to be changed, nothing needs root permission.
nexus S4g phone with ICS rooted codename ROM and stock HC HTCView. Tethered great.
So Im using stock ICS 4.0.4 from the latest OTA update and Im rooted. Everything usually works fine but every few weeks something happens to my ability to tether. Im using Wireless Tether for Root Users from https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ . Any other tethering app fails to work including FoxFi. I start tethering and get no errors and everything is fine for a minute. I have full connection and speed. After about 1 or 2 page loads my speed suddenly drops so low that web pages time out but skype and steam will stay connected but weatherbug will not. I can't actually call anyone on skype. Pings to google work with 100+ms. If I turn off the data connection on my phone and turn it back on then I can load pages but again for only a minute or a few page loads. If I reboot my phone then I have no problems at all until I turn on the tethering app. I can do speed test after speed test with 15-24 Mbps download and roughly the same upload. Until I turn on that tethering app. By Turn on I mean press the button to start tethering. Turning off the tethering does not restore normal connection until I either turn the data connection off/on or reboot the phone. My settings from the app are:
Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup Method: Auto
Wifi Encryption: Enabled @ WPA2-PSK
Wifi-Driver Reload 1 and 2 checked
Keep Alive Checked
MSS Clamping: Checked
Routing fix: Checked
Using google DNS Servers
Disable Wake-Lock: Checked
I've tried changing DNS servers but I can resolve google's IP during the ping test. I've tried other profiles but this one is the only one that works. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and did a factory reset with no luck. After a day or 2 the problem seems to mysteriously disappear and things return to normal. I've got the old unlimited data plan I was originally forced into from Verizon. I've been told by several Verizon reps that they cannot throttle my connection for any reason and I do not have any sort of limit due to licensing agreements with the FCC. Since everything works fine before turning on tethering (I used the phone for hours) then it sounds like something the app is doing to the phone's settings. Verizon says there are no outages in the area but I didn't think that was the issue anyways since turning off the data connection and back on gives me a normal connection for a minute. While this does go away after a day or 2 thats a couple days without internet. I would appreciate any help I could get with it at this point as hours and hours of google searches returned a few people having the issue but no working solutions other than getting a different phone. Does anyone have an ideas? Thanks.
Change the profile to the rezound and disable mss clamping. I had issue with the tether doing the same thing when mss clamping was enabled.

Possibly but this same issue has been noted for several other users. I happen to be one of them that seems to get throttled at times. It usually happens when I tethered using lte and used it for some high bandwidth stuff like gaming or streaming movies. The thing is that Verizon does something called bandwidth shaping which causes them to slow your speeds based on the traffic in your area.

are you using a custom rom? If so go into setting and change the processing style. Like the style, governor.

The CPU governor has nothing to do with the data side haha. It is just something vzw does and they don't do it to everyone though. I could tether to my ps3 and play call of duty over lte and get lag. Switch to 3g and be perfectly fine.
