Google Talk Video Chat: Wifi Network required - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question regarding Google Talk and using video calls. This is NOT the same as a Google+ Video hangout.
I now get the message "You must be conneted to a Wi-Fi network to start a video chat."
Is this something now embedded in Google Talk or is this because I'm on AT&T and there's something that checks my network? Or am I running some custom version of Google Talk? Is this happening to every Google Talk user or is it network dependent?
For the record I'm on an international SGS2 i9100 running CM9.
Trying to figure out exactly WHAT is going on here.

bump anyone?

Skype "Can't sign in" message.

Anybody having troubles lately with Skype on your Android phones?. I just can't sign in. I've read articles and it seems that many people had this issue. I have a Droid 2 Global that is not on the Verizon wireless network.
By the way, I realized that Skype for Android is only for wifi and not for 3G???? Well after seeing this problem I found a hacked version of Skype at http://www.droid-life.com/2010/10/06...calls-over-3g/ and installed it on my phone. Supposedly with this version you can make VOIP calls over 3G. Again, I still have the same problem of not being able to log in to Skype, even from this version over 3G.
After having these problems, I installed Fring and Nimbuzz, but both of them took out Skype from their services, so there is no way to use Skype anymore.
What is this? Some sort of conspiracy from Google against Skype? Maybe Google is just about to launch a Google Voice program that does VOIP and decided to start a dirty war?
Or, is this just happening on Verizon phones running Android and there is a Verizon-Skype agreement to just allow Skype Mobile to run? On the description of the app it says that "Some handsets may not be supported"... Maybe the D2G is not supported?
I have a unlocked version of Skype which will allow VOIP over 2g/3g, although i've tested it with 2g and there is a delay in voice but it works. I was having the same problem before. Just do a few searches.
D2G
Edit: I should have read your whole post try clearing defaults then force stop and try again.
Thank you

tango does a swell job on video chatting over 3g. as well as yahoo IM.
I meant to say notmal video calls just selectine a contact from phonebok and making a video call. Not through any IM.
I am currently on AXURA 2.2.7.
Even on network bar screen I cant see any 3G or H symbol at all. my subscription is 3G and am to make this call on other OS fones. Please help.
Tango or Yahoo IM both work very well you need to have the other party you are calling signed up to those accounts. So what happens is you have a separate contacts list in tango or yahoo.............. then you can call them.

currently there is no 1st party video calling for android phone. probably the only 3rd party app that is lightweight and only requires both users to have the app and a quick sign up is TANGO. its cross platform between iOS and android as well. other apps include qik, fringo, yahoo im, cracked skype , and oovoo
actually no one understood me correctly.
I am not asking about video calling through IM. I am asking about video calling to a mobile or landline no. through my network. If anyone of u hav used Symbian or WinMo u ll understand this. where we can directly make a video call to any no. through network.
Could you please also let me know where I can activate deactivate CELL INFO DISPLAY

and im telling you your options. android does not have a 1st party video chat option...only 3rd parties...and so far the best lightweight vid chat app is tango...when you call them,it'll be just like a voice call thru data and there's a button on the screen to activate video chat.
You have a inbuilt option for making a video call directly over the network instead of IM networks. Have used it on my Galaxy S. Again the service has to be enabled by the operator.
i did not know this. more info please.
I second that.

So even if we go onto a custom rom we cant do it?
Nope. You'd need to use grooveip (uses your google voice account) or similar apps.
Can't use SIP Provider

So I just got my phone a week ago and played with stock before going straight to CM10. I went back to stock because of some issues I was having.
In stock, I set up Google Voice on the phone as well as the Internet Call Settings in the dialer with SipGate as my provider. I have SipGate set to receive calls only and Google Voice for all outgoing calls.
My expectation was that I could go to the dialer and dial any # through Google Voice using my wifi at home or whereever, just not using any cellular services.
If I go to the Google Voice site and call from there, it does ring my phone (to bridge that connection) since I have SipGate set up to receive the forwarded call. I just can't call out from the phone.
From what I'm gathering for your reply is that even though I have Google Voice set to make calls through the phone, you're saying it won't work?? What is it about Groove IP that allows you to make calls with the dialer that Google Voice cannnot even though it's settings has that option?
It boggles the mind...
Oh and I went back to CM10 just to see if it was an issue with stock. Stock would start to dial, but exit immediately. I think I saw a little notice about service being out of range or something (again, no SIM). I actually did get a free TMo SIM that I used on my old Nokia XpressMusic 5800, but left it unactivated. A SIM was required to use some features.
In CM10, it doesn't even start to dial, but just says "Mobile network not available" even though I set Google Voice to make the outgoing call.

[Q] stock video calling app on att nyc

Hello , I have been trying to troubleshoot the problem where the native video calling app in my dialer simply has never worked. at least not by itself. a while ago I was able to make video calls with it but only if I had Skype for android installed .This isn't a huge problem as I have two video calling apps that work just fine TANGO and GOOGLE HANGOUTS. I have seen this question asked but not answered. I called ATT and they said that the phone is not optimized for use in USA. also they don't support the international variant. Samsung us just gives long distance numbers to UK.
Again not a big deal but if someone knows how to get this working on ATT in NYC USA please do tell.
