Like the stupid idiot I am, I took my phone for a swim while it quietly rested in my pocket. It's been in my pocket for about 5 minutes until I had noticed. I quickly jumped out, tried to turn it on, but it didn't want to. I took it to my house and took out the battery, the sd card, and the sim card for it to dry as well. However, I heard that if you put in your charger, it messed up everything? If it does, I'm so done for. My warranty doesn't cover water damages. Other than letting the phone and battery dry out in the sun, is there any more advice I should follow? It won't turn on at all. When I take out the back cover, I do see some water drops INSIDE the phone, and I can't get that to dry at all.

5 minutes is way too long for it to work. I lost a phone least year in less than 30 seconds in the pool. Sorry but i truly think you need to figure out how to get a new phone.

I'd say it may work but it may take a while. A couple years ago I accidentally took my phone swimming with me. It was in a while, too. Probably 10-15 minutes. It wouldn't work. Dried. It wouldn't work. For some random reason, months later I tried firing it up. It worked. It's now been donated to the kids to play around with. When it decided to start working again, I'm not positive, but it's still working 2 years later.
For those wondering, it was... I believe.. a Motorolla Krazr. Not exactly a smart phone, though. Best of luck.

Yeah when phone is on/ battery in it and water hits it for more the 20sec ur screwed. I dropped my tbolt in sink immediately pulled battery and stuck in rice after a couple hrs It worked.

Took mine swimming 3 weeks after i got it and didn't have insurance. For whatever reason it didn't carry over from my dinc. After a few days in the sun and a few days in rice I was able to boot it up just long enough to unroot.
Went *****in at vzw store that my insurance should have been on my account. They treated it as a manufacture warranty, I forked over the 90 bucks like it was an insurance claim and walked out the store with a brand new bolt.

Whatever you do don't plug it in. Let it thoroughly dry out for at least a couple days, possibly using the rice method or placing it near a household item used to remove moisture from the air (sodium hydroxide if you have it). After a good few days try powering it on with just the battery.
It could also help to put a fan by it.
This worked with my friends iphone.
Note: anything you do is at your own risk.
Let it dry. My son went swimming with his nexus one and didn't notice until an hour later. We pulled the battery, used a vacuum to suck out any water and let it sit in a bowl of rice for 3 days. After turning it on it would not hold a charge. Replaced the battery and bingo good as new.
Your phone will mosf likely short circuit and kill power immediately when water hits it. This why you should not try to turn it on until you are certain it is dry.

Did both of the things you told me not to do: tired to turn it on when it was wet and put it in the charger when it was SLIGHTLY wet, it was before i put it in rice.
Still gonna keep it in the rice and pray tho.
yeah, you did about everything you shouldn't do with wet electronics.
My wife washed my phone a few years ago in the washing machine. Pulled the battery, put everything in a bag of rice for a week. Charged it up and it came back to life. Screen was a little off for a while, but over time it came back to normal.
I've read you can also put it in the oven on warm for a couple of hours.
I put my old Motorola Q in the oven after my mom made a Turkey and it was cooling down... worked like a charm after

My wife dropped her Samsung i730 in her glass of ice tea. It was only in there for a few seconds, but it was long enough. I dried it out the best I could, and put it in a bag of rice for 3 days. After the 3 days, it fired right up! I had to take a toothbrush and a little water to un-stick the buttons, but we used it for another year.
I was separating all of my old cell phones a few weeks ago to donate, and I came across my i730. I plugged it in, and it still works!
Give it time, you may be surprised that it will be ok.

On another note,
I fried my TB a month after I got it. Swimming as well. Tried drying it fast, vacuum and heat. Let sit for few hours and my patience ran out. Turned it on, and a sizzling sound came from the phone. Yup, bad news. I had insurance though so I shelled out the $100 for a replacement and chalked it up as a lesson learned.

Let it rest more. I dropped my laptop into water in the bathtub, not full of water, but the water was on. Waited two weeks and laptop was fine, no rice was used btw.

The rice trick should have done it, I recommend it often, but I fear you may now have damaged the phone by not leaving it long enough and subsequently putting it on charge.
Also note, most phones have water damage litmus indicators in now so your warranty is screwed too.

Depends really, you can insure a phone at most stores these days and they will replace it regardless if you do. If your household insurance is all risk, this will cover your phone as well. (note both options costs extra money a month)
But if he does not have any of that he is indeed screwed.
Also, when dropping a phone in the water remove the battery and let it dry for at least 1 week. prefered 2 weeks. Do it in dry rice or with those moist absorbing packs you find in shoes and **** these days.
It's very possible only your battery is dead, considering the phone switched on fine and it's only the charging that doesn't work. Buy a cheap battery off ebay and try it out.
I think you might be right, If the phone would have been a goner it wouldn't have started at first.But i just cant find the water damage indicators on battery or phone,just to check if i can get it repaired through warranty

Well i guess ur right.Its not the first time my phone got water damaged.In past my HD2 actually sat in water for much much long time but then i kept the phone near heating for 4-5 days and it worked perfectly well.
(although the damage indicators turned red)

I'm just speculating about the indicators on the sgs ii, it's common practice for other manufacturers to use them, often in plain sight. The gs ii, may not have any but if it does they're probably inaccessible inside.
Best bet is to examine some tear down photography. Maybe ifixit has one?

Uncooked rice is inefficient. Not sure why people use that when they can use either silica gel or desiccant, both of which come when you buy certain dry foodstuff or PC cases/computer parts/cameras (or you can buy it from the camera store). Is it worth saving a few dollars and risk the water being in your phone for that much longer?

I'm almost in the same situation as chelseafan...
GS2 dropped in the water, switched off, tried to dry it with my hairdryer, then successfully switched on. Everything seemed to work just fine, but then it suddenly died and I couldn't turn it on again.
I probably didn't wait enough to let it dry (a couple of hours) and now it's in a box with rice and silica.
I couldn't find any water detector sticker or similar, is there any feedback for this kind of sensors on the GS2? I was just trying to understand if I can get it repaired in warranty or not...

Nope water damage is chargeable .Indicator somewhere under the camera area .

Thanks jje, I'll try to let it dry some days more and then we'll see... Maybe I'm lucky!
Speaking from experience, rice works, but overnight is not enough, should have left it longer, next mistake is powering it on and charging it, water and electricity do not mix, that may be the stick that broke the camels back, but I hope not in your case.....

As I see it in the pictures there are two Water Indicator stickers in the phone.
1. In de corner of the battery compartment, down to the right
2. In de back housing, not the battery cover, between the small camera window and the speaker opening.
You can see them in the pictures 1 and 2 of Step 4.
Apparently Samsung uses white stickers with blue/purple crosses on it. They are about 3 by 3mm.
I've been lucky! After 3 days turned off and closed in a box with plenty of rice and silica, my GS2 is back and working perfectly! No issue detected so far!
So, a little list of suggestions after my bad experience:
1- GS2 is NOT waterproof
2- the fastest you take it out from water the best chances to have it working again you have
3- take out the battery as fast as you can and don't turn it on
4- silica and rice worked just fine for me, but be patient, you will need at least 3-4 days
5- be perseverant: after one day of treatement I couldn't switch on my GS2, but atter 3 days everything was ok!

Had a small amount of juice spilled onto my Atrix.. won't boot anymore, just get the solid green light any nothing further..
Tried battery out many times obviously, trying to let it sit in the sun to dry.. no SIM, even no battery and on A/C to no avail..
Any ideas?
Had a spill on mine before. For future reference immediately remove battery sim and sd and toss it in some rice. Leave it for a long while mine worked fine after at first it was convinced it had headphones in had to had to jam a qtip with rubbing alcohol got it cleaned up works good as new

Thanks - how long is a long while? I've left it for 1.5hrs this time round. Does it "reset" any of the moisture timers if you attempt to boot it?
I've tried leaving it for 10-20 mins at a time before checking.. as I say though this time I've left it for 1.5hrs so far. There was barely any juice inside the handset and I opened it up immediately.. no rice though..
It can take a day or two to completely dry and function normally.

Well, after 24 hours my Atrix would still not boot. The moisture stickers were still normal, and aesthetically it is still in mint condition.
I took it into my carrier this morning, and they had a look and the "engineer" said the motherboard must be faulty, and replaced it on the spot..!
I am not back on Froyo, applying the 2.3 OTA.. time to unlock/ROM when I get home.

Good that you got a replacement. Note that liquids in electronics can take a LONG time to dry. I washed an iPod Nano once and stuck it in a bag of rice to dry. I tried turning it on every day and after day 6 it finally worked.

Yeah, I mean I figured I was just going to send it for warranty (and hope), given the situation.. but a replacement well, can't complain.
It was under 3 months old, there was some sort of special warranty period under 3 months on the form, and plus as I say there was no visible damage on it so perhaps that is why they just replaced it.
My Atrix 4g thinks it has headphones after a juice spill...

Hi freshbakd,
I had a Mango juice (natural one) spill into my Atrix 4G and the Mobile is working good but as yours, it thinks it has the headphones plugged in :S. Could you describe how did you clean it, where did you insert the qtip and what kind of qtip (by the way, what is a qtip? ).

Today i went swimming an my kid took off with my phone an it went into the pool. I was told it was water proof an when i pool it out the phone turns gray an powers off.. ive gotten it wet before by accident an it was just fine.. i have it in rice now but im asking is it a goner?
Could be. They are not waterproof, they are splash resistant. Still wish it's only a minor incident

The best way at least that i can think of is to manually disassemble the phone and wipe it to dry by yourself,rise wont make it dry,try to power on the phone in a week or so,when the phone is dry.

Actually rice is a natural absorbent, it can in fact, save your phone as it has with my iPod Touch 32gb, though not a razr, it has all similar mobile device components inside, and I didn't even take it apart, left it in a Tupperware full of rice for a few days, after I used a good hair-dryer to evaporate the large stuff. We're still talking about a non-serviceable internal battery (just like our Droid RAZR).
Even though it didn't properly start-up within a day after leaving it in the rice for a few days, the darn thing started right up as if right out of the box about a week later.
So lesson learned, technology is amazing, unpredictable, and very servicable, no matter what.
Though, the idea of taking it apart is a good one because by having water damage your warranty is voided atm.

Taking it apart will not stop the warranty from being voided. There is a water sensor that was activated the moment it got wet and cannot be returned to its original state.
Rice only gets rid of humidity, corrosion will start anyway. It WILL destroy the phone sooner or later.

yeah happened to my girlfriend evo 3d wouldnt charge after awhile... im really not good with taking things apart.. lol also i tried pluging it in it went to the charging part when it boots up with charger, but wouldnt power on fully.. an eventually started rebooting over n over so back in rice for couple days i guess hope i didnt fry it...

There is a 'sonic' bath or somethiing like that that you can perform that is supopsed to get rid of corosion, but you would have to find someone with equipment to do that. Assuming of course that connecting it to the charger did not fry it.

Chlorine should dissipate but you could have problems if you tried charging prior to the phone being fully dry, or if the btty was left in for too long. Alcohol is usually used to clean electronics but I forgot what type doesn't leave a residue.
The rice bath for a couple of days should dry the phone (alcohol also helps to dry the phone), but I would be concerned about btty damage. The content of the btty could have leaked.
If you have insurance turn it in!
i remember using rubbing alcohol, aka methanol should work. try taking a look at XDA tv. there was one instance the guy was *****ing about the Razr not having a removable battery and he opened his galaxy nexus and dipped it in methanol

if you do take it apart pick up some Denatured Alcohol from a Home Depot type store and use that to clean the inside. It will help prevent corrosion and it is perfectly safe to use on any part of the phone.
My friend had the same thing happen, he took off the back took out only the battery, then grabbed alcohol 99% and distilled water, made a 50/50 solution and put it in a ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for like 30 min, then in a bag of silica gell (those tiny paper bags that say to not eat) Left it there for 2 days, works just fine.
Rice fixed it two days open sd card slot n it working like a charm

Short Version:
So here I am with a i9100 drowned in wash tub for almost 5 mins. Now trying to dry it up. Don't know what will happen. Will keep you guys posted.
Long Version:
Just came out shower and kept my phone in pants. Went for packing bag as I had to travel today. Wore my jeans and kept that pant away with the phone in it. Left to another room for packing. After coming back the pant had vanished. Enquired about the pant to my mom and she told the she soaked the pant in wash tub. It was like 5 mins. Rushed to the wash tub and removed the phone, removed battery and shook off and removed a lot of water. Now the phone is lying in pieces and kept under 60W bulb. Lets see will dry this thing up for 16 hrs and then insert the battery.
Guys your tips and comments will be really helpful for resurrecting the i9100.
Leave for a week in a container of rice.If that doesnt cure it,claim off of house insurance.......or sue your mother.
Rice is best for drying the phone completely. It just soaks up all the moisture.

Wish I knew this trick few years ago. Had similar situation with my eeepc but it was a diet soda that was poured on it. I waited whole week before turning it back on after cleaning it. Good thing though: no sugar=no stickiness...

Rice methord actually works and there is no harm from it as far as I know. To OP don't put the battery in till its fully dry
UPDATE 1:
The battery is having a soap like corrosion on the extreme right pin. I think the battery is short circuited. Maybe i will have to check a new battery at a local retailer to just test whether the phone is alive or dead. BTW 20 hours of phone warming (under a 60W bulb) completed. Phone is pretty warm and I dont think insides must be wet now. Also the phone seems to be much shinier than before

Don't put that battery, you will melt your phone.
Buy a new battery.
Don't try to turn your phone on again, wait atleast 3 days, put it inside a package of rice and just wait. also dont forget to close the bag.
And most inportant of um all....don't forget to tell youre mother that the sgs2 is in the rice bag or else she will start cooking rice....with youre sgs2 maybe at the bottom of the cooking pan:crying:

UPDATE FINAL:
So put in my battery today and the phone refused to show any sign of life. Ultimately took my phone to service centre. They opened up the phone and inspected it. The inspection revealed that:
1. The mainboard is dead
2. The digitizer connector adapter is damaged. Still further if the phone boots up further damage could be assessed.
The cost for the repairs were claimed as INR 15000 ($285) which is way too costly. Maybe I will have to give my phone. Hmmm I am thinking to buy a Galaxy Nexus now. I cant afford an S2 again now nor a repaired S2. It feels really sad to loose my beloved phone.
Miracle Update:
Was missing my phone today so thought should start up my phone. And miracle happened. The phone booted up after attaching the charger. Awesome stuff. Samsung rocks in terms of hardware. Now only two things are not working blue tooth and the phone is not getting via charger. And some stains are found on inner glass of back camera lens. Rest each and everything rocks! I am really happy with build quality.

Was missing my phone today so thought should start up my phone. And miracle happened. The phone booted up after attaching the charger. Awesome stuff. Samsung rocks in terms of hardware. Now only two things are not working blue tooth and the phone is not getting via charger. And some stains are found on inner glass of back camera lens. Rest each and everything rocks! I am really happy with build quality.

Just list it on eBay as a "nice clean phone".
