The problem:
-My evo 3d keeps restarting at random times and when it restarts it sometimes dies during the booting up process, and i have to put in a new battery because when it boots up with the old battery it just says its at 10% or less.
this has happened a lot. PLEASE HELP
The specs:
Hboot 1.4
rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620318 (Newts one)
please help. this is really irritating me.
I had the very same problem (on RC3). I later remembered that I just upgraded the radio to the latest version. Downgrading back to the radio in the 1.13 RUU (v0530) resolved the issue. My battery life dropped tremendously on the new radio as well.
On a side note, have you tried other ROMs since then? If it's happening in all ROMs it could be an issue there as well.

Under downloads you'll see this: From the 1.13.651.7 OTA/RUU. Click the CDMA link (for 0.97.10.0530). Place this file on the root of your SD card (must be PG86IMG.zip - case sensitive!) and power on phone into bootloader mode (vol down + power). It'll verify and ask you to flash.
Be very careful doing this because you can potentially brick your phone if you don't know what you're doing. There are more detailed instructions at the thread at the beginning of this post. Post back here if you have any issues so I can help you out!
Good luck!
EDIT: If you have access to a computer, follow the "How To Flash" instructions at the link so you can verify the MD5 to make sure the download isn't corrupted.

i have the current radio 0.97.00.0518, flashing this will be safe, right?
also, will it erase my phone data?
The radio version you have is from RUU 1.11 which is one of the oldest ones for this device. I'm curious to know how it's still there unless you've never done an OTA/Hboot downgrade.
It will not erase your handset, only updates the radio software which is a completely separate part of your phone. Just follow the instructions and read through them a few times. I've upgraded/downgraded my radio several times following those instructions.

If it restarted after the radio update: flash the 2.17 RUU then downgrade hboot to 1.4 -OR- flash the 2.17 zip and remove the hboot file.
If it restarted during the radio update: (this is bad). The problem could be with a faulty battery. But that is the least of your problems now.
I'll get the link the 2.17 downloads for you. just a sec..
EDIT#1: Here is a link to the PG86IMG.zip for 2.17 containing the latest software and firmware. Delete the HBOOT file from the zip using WinRAR, 7Zip, etc. and rename zip file to PG86IMG.zip, move to root of SD and flash.

EDIT#2: Here is the link to the actual RUU (run in Windows then do HBOOT downgrade): http://goo.im/stock/shooter/ruu/RUU...216_NV_NV_spcs_1.42_release_233304_signed.exe

Just found this while helping someone else. Freeza posted an all-in-one firmware update package for those on Hboot 1.4. This updates you to all the firmware from the 2.17 package without losing root or S-OFF. This does NOT flash a ROM, just updates the firmware.

i have another issue. my internet. i used to get error code 67, called sprint, and they refreshed my line and stuff. when i try to turn it on it goes as follows from the settings; "Turning on.." then after a few seconds it says "disconnected"
Ok where are you at right now? Are you still S-OFF? Are you on stock RUU or are you on Newts?

by the way, i flashed what you told me from the second edit. hasnt restarted since :')
I had a similar issue that turned out to be a hardware problem. Had to have sprint get me a new phone. The restarts kept happening more often and the phone was slightly hot. Then it just wouldn't turn on anymore.

Glad to hear your restarts have stopped. As far as internet, that was a known issue with earlier kernels. I have Chad's RLS5 kernel; PM me if you'd like it. It fixes lots of issues with WiFi, 3G connectivity, animations, etc.
Sometimes the random reboots are a hardware problem or a radio problem. I used to get them every once in a while but they stopped ever since I updated the radio and firmware to the 2.17 Fw. Freeza had posted an all-in-one radio/fw update that removed the hboot that could possibly work..

I had this problem and the solution was much simpler -- pull your memory card out and see if the reboots stop.
If that's the problem, back up the card to a computer and long format it.

I was also having issues with random reboots on my phone. These seemed to only be occurring while the phone was asleep (in my pocket, on a desk, etc...). I had somewhere on the order of 7-8 reboots in a 48 hour period. I also flashed the all-in-one radio/fw update that Freeza posted, and have had zero reboots while sleeping in the 72 hours since. I highly recommend flashing this all-in-one update if you are having issues with reboots while sleeping.
Hey guys! Many people believe you must flash the new firmware to run Sense 3.6 Virgin Mobile leak based ROMS. I am here to prove you wrong and show you a very very simple work around!
THIS IS FOR HBOOT 1.50 S-ON USERS ONLY.
Here's how:
ALWAYS REMEMBER DO A NANDROID BACKUP!!!
1. Download a Sense 3.6 ROM for you EVO 3D. Here's a list:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/24783-evo3d04-mayromcdmavirtuous-quattro-sense-edition-100-rc2-sense-36-android-403/ (I used this ROM, Virtuous Quattro!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634807 (Unlike above, this one has tweaks.)
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?12441-Booster-Shot-RC2-5-7-2012-Boost-Kingdom-Rom-Ported-to-the-EVO-3D (Also has tweaks.)
2. Make sure the ROM is on the root of your EVO 3D's SD card. This will make things easier later.
3. Download this kernel here (THE GODLY FIX!!!): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/24995663/AnthraX-htcleak-stockfirmwaretest.zip Place it on the root of your SD card.
4. Shutdown your phone, remove and re-insert the battery, then start into HBOOT (Volume down and power) and boot into recovery. (I have 4-ext recovery.)
5. First wipe all your phones data. Wipe the boot, data, and system partitions and wipe cache and dalvik cache.
6. Flash your ROM. DO NOT reboot.
7. Flash the "AnthraX-htcleak-stockfirmwaretest.zip" file.
8. Reboot and enjoy. You have successfully installed fully working Sense 3.6!!! Congrats!!!
THANKS TO chad.goodman FOR THIS GREAT FIX.
LIST OF ISSUES IN THE KERNEL:
3D doesn't work properly.
USB Mounting not working.
ON THE BRIGHTER SIDE:
4G works!!!
WiFi works!!!
3G works!!!
Rear camera works in 2D!!!
Front facing camera works!!! (FACE UNLOCK)
Virtually everything elseā¦
Is this a new kernel from Chad because with his previous leaked kernel, 3D and USB were not functioning. I'm S-OFF now but I used this when I was HBOOT 1.5 S-ON and it brought ICS to a lot of us who got boot loops with the stock kernel so much kudos to Chad.
Looks like it's the same test kernel that he released before. I don't think there has been any further development on that and he is moving on to a kernel based off the Evo 3D/Sensation ICS kernel so those that had issue will be stuck with his test kernel unless they get s-off which I'm planning to do soon.
Guys, It worked 100% for me on Virtuous Quattro. USB storage didn't work, but it fixed my Sense 3.6 boot loop issue. If you DO have the issue, take a chance and flash the kernel. I am trying to be helpful.
MY SETUP:
HBOOT 1.50 S-ON
4-EXT RECOVERY
YOU SHOULD USE 4-ext RECOVERY IF YOU DON'T ALREADY
Ya this works great besides WiFi. There is no ssm clamping options in the setting menu so can't check it so don't work. Tried sereval roms and all are the same. Hope we can find a way to fix this and I be happy camper. I loaded viper, mik, and clean. Tried deleting the app and redownloading it from market ...no luck
What am I missing? I've been on MeanROM ICS since he released it. I even dirty flashed it right over his GB ROMs and it's been flawless since day 1.
hboot 1.4 s off and there is no way I was ever going to flash VM firmware.
Who/what is making this so difficult?
Edit: clarified in the OP.. disregard.
Answer
People with HBOOT 1.50 S-ON will be able to use this fix.

This is for hboot 1.5 s-on. Prior to this fix phone would boot and just as loads up it reboot and start over on n on. I been fighting this issue for two weeks. Now I have ics running great beside 2 listed issues
Once S-Off is achieved by whatever means, you should not have any issues flashing any of the ICSense ROMs. Although many have been successful using the bricked method I have never been to fond of "breaking" (bricking) something to then "fix it" (downgrade). And even though the wire trick seems risky, it was very simple to follow. I definitely recommend it for anyone gong thru what I was going thru... Now bootloops are a thing of the past!

I used to be able to flash Evervol's Shooter ROM, almost all the versions no problem. Now... same thing.
When I mean I can't flash them, I simply mean they won't boot. I get a constant boot loop once it hits the animation screen, then restarts.
Any help or advice?
I had the same problem. Most sense roms don't work for me now either. it took me forever to find one that would boot. I hope some one finds the problem.
Since you are s-off, you should have no problems. Are you super wiping between flashes? Leftover stuff can cause issues.

I don't do superwipes, as most ppl it seems say not to (at least in the threads I've seen).
I was talking to another dev last night, and perhaps the problem started when I went from TWRP to 4EXT.
I have since gone back to TWRP 2.1, but the problem is still there.
I was running preludedrew's ROMs for the longest time, but back in April I saw that camera was fixed with sense ROMs. I flashed to deck's and then to a few others, and haven't had a problem. Now that I want to go back to AOSP based ROMs, none of them won't boot.
I even tried flashing Preludedrew's 2.2.0 p1 ROM (one I KNOW I ran previously, and it too boot loops).
I am trying to do a logcat at the moment, but every time I try, I get stuck at -waiting for device-
I know that the logcat works, because when I go back to a Sense ROM, it works perfectly. What am I doing wrong on the AOSP ROMs to not even be able to get a log cat?
Like I said, they flash fine, they hit the HTC screen, then start the boot animation, but the reboots. Please help! Thanks

I have gone ahead and upgraded my HBoot to 1.40 from 1.30
I didn't think this was going to make a difference, and I was right. Still boot loops on AOSP based ROMs.
I'm really confused, as I used to run AOSP ROMs, then switched to Sense 3.6/4.0 ROMs, and can't go back to AOSP based ones anymore.

I tried to re-run revolutionary. It gave me an error, that when I researched it, it wouldn't work since I was on an ICS ROM. So I flashed a CM7 ROM, but just like all other AOSP ROMs, I get nothing but boot loops.
I'm going to look for a GB Sense-based ROM and try again.
I have the suggestion that I should upgrade to 1.50 using RUU, then brick and downgrade again... I really don't want to do that unless necessary.

Has anyone heard of this happening? Anyone else have any idea what I could try?
I have an Evo V 4G (obviously) it's S-OFF (wire trick) and running the buttered toast kernel, I was on Paranoid Android 2.99 and I kept getting fc's, so I decided to try a few new ROMs, so I tried ViperROM for Sense 4.1, that froze in the boot animation, so I went into 4ext and wiped/flashed a new ROM, but in 4ext, when I hit "info" it still says ViperROM no matter how many times I've wiped it.
I've tried going back and forth retracing my steps and trying different ROMs, aroma installer set ups, and I have no clue.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

First suggestion would be to post in the right forum, which for this thread would be Q&A. I've reported it to the mods so they will move it for you.
If you are using 4EXT you should do a "format all partitions except sd card" in the wipe/format menu before flashing a ROM. Then make sure the the S-ON/Smartflash option is disabled in the tools menu, although that won't prevent your ROM from flashing correctly.
Try doing that and giving it plenty of time to boot after you flash it (10 minutes should be enough).
ramjet73
This needs to be in Q&A so get ready for some flames, but I'll attempt to answer.
Go into bootloader and use the wipe all utility there. Then go back to 4-ext and make sure to enable smartflash under settings. Wipe everything except your SD card, and then try to flash something like a sense 3.6 ROM that you know will be stable. Finally, let your device reboot or reboot it when the flash is complete, and let it sit for at least ten minutes. If by then, it still hasn't booted, post back.
Best of luck.

sorry about that guys, I'm not new to forums, I just use AndroidForums more often, I'll give it a try, although I've tried formatting already.
A possibility might be that ViperROM was supposed to be flashed with an RUU fastboot? I'm not really familiar with that method
My guess is Viper needs 1.58 hboot since it a sense rom.
And yeah, wrong forum.
well we've gotten past that, I get it, wrong forum, won't happen again.
That might be true, I'm on Eng 1.04, but I've tried installing Paranoid Android again which worked for me on 1.04, so is there any way I could possibly fix this and get it to boot
Yeah, you definitely need HBOOT 1.57 (Juop HBOOT, the one for Virgin Mobile) if you want this to run. Optionally you can also use 1.58 (Evo 3D ICS Bootloader), but you'll need to modify the SPC in info.txt to make it "02" or "2" I forget which one.
You can of course always fuse the build with the Virgin Mobile Leak kernel, and while you'll lose some stability, it will make it compatible with the ENG Bootloader. Sense 4.1 ROMs are not natively compatible with the ENG bootloader (1.04), because they use a modified version of the 2.89 (RUU) kernel.

thank you, is there any way I can get my phone to boot? I've tried every ROM on my sdcard, whether its JB, MIUI, Sense, Sensless, and it seems to be stuck at this HTC logo, it won't play any boot animation or bootloop, its just stuck
Wipe all partitions, get the original HBOOT 1.57 on it, wipe all partitions again, and then flash Harmonia. Harmonia always boots for me 100% of the time. It's really the only surefire way of doing in my opinion.
If you don't have the Juop HBOOT, here's a download from my personal repository https://www.box.com/s/s64uphj0a37yj7mf3jx1
You probably already know, but rename it PG86IMG.zip, put it on your SD card, and go into bootloader. Once it's there, do the update. Take out your SD and get another one (because you won't be able to get to the recovery anymore) and put Harmonia on it. Your phone should boot, this method has saved me more than once.

Some people with this problem have needed to flash the RUU.exe to get it resolved. The Virgin Mobile version is here.
Since you are S-OFF you can just flash that from Windows after putting the phone into "fastboot usb" mode, then flash a custom bootloader and recovery and you will be back in business. You can also boot into the stock ROM and download and install the VM OTA update before flashing the custom recovery. Should take no more than a half hour.
I have a link to the bootloaders and instructions for flashing them available in this post and they all work with both the Evo 3D and Evo V.

I updated the HBOOT, but when I plug in my other SD card, it's trying to update the Radio, so I hit no and it automatically reboots (and stays frozen)
on the second SD card, all I need is the harmonia zip?

You need to delete the PG86IMG.zip file on your SD card. See my previous post if you can't get it working with your current direction.
ramjet73
Yeah, delete it, or snag a second SD. All you're going to need is the harmonia.zip. Flash it, and you should be good to go.
EDIT: And if you really can't get it to boot, the RUU is definitely the way to go. Ramjet is totally right there.

That's true. I have r304 booting successfully with the ENG 1.04 hboot.

Yeah, that's what I thought too.
JunoBear 1.50 s-off
4ext recovery
Mean ICS v2.6
Anthrax kernel 3.2.2
Radio 1.06.1216
Sprint CDMA
Problems:
Phone reboots randomly, even when in call
Phone freezes randomly
Holding down power button>power options> to restart> doesn't fully restart
getting a lot of roaming from home to work which never happened. Have to update prl back and forth from work to home which is annoying in itself.
What i have tried:
usually have to take battery out then can power back the phone on.
1.Wipe cache+dalvik, cache, dalvik cache
2.format system, data, everything, even sd card
3.tried superwipe
4. tried different roms MikVirgin 1.01, Mean ICS, Paranoid
5. tried different hboot eng 1.04, 1.40
6. tried the kernel with flashed rom, anthrax kernel, buttertoast
7. tried different variations with different roms,h-boot, etc.
Your radio is the problem. The ROMs and kernels you have mentioned on here run on the latest radio firmware. That the would explain why your phone freezes up when you try calling people and the random reboots are kernel and hboot incompatibilities. Heres a short list of what I mean.
Anthrax kernels can run on any hboot.
So can butteredtoast.
Most ICS roms can only run on hboot 1.58.00.00 or 1.58.5858
With the exception of zr3d Xl plus and viper3d.
All aosp ROMs can only be run on hboot 1.5 or lower.
All of these ROMs run on radio 1.09.0706
I would reccomend flashing this file to get you back on stock and on latest radios (1.09.0706 SPRINT 2.89)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193101
I reccomend you downloading this from your PC. Place it on the root of your sdcard and rename it PG86IMG in all caps. Insert the card back into your phone and power your into bootloader. When your phone detects the file, press the volume key up to start the update. Once finished, you can reflash your recovery, and then flash a ROM. Remember that ICS sense ROMs work with hboot 1.58 and Aosp ROMs works with 1.5 or lower. Good luck.

Not to be argumentative since 99% of what you said is right, but the only CDMA ROM (ICS or other) that requires hboot 1.58 is Coolexe's ROM. Viper doesn't anymore and the others never have. Some prefer certain radios and firmware though as you said.
If what jsparta said doesn't work, then I'd run the ruu.exe located in ramjet's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438 . It will put you back to stock but s-off still. All firmware, radios, etc will be updated. If phone runs fine stock, then flash hboot, custom recovery and custom ROM. When I had issues, this fixed it fit me.
thanks guys. i'll give both a try. hopefully it will fix the problems.

i'm getting ready to try it today. i was giving it a day or so to see if the freezing problem was just a one time thing, but it turn out it's still doing it daily. And just today when my battery died, i charged the phone up, and powered it on, then it went into a boot loop.
any how for the ruu, is it necessary to relock the bootloader or can i just flash the ruu.exe?
update: i did the "fastboot oem lock" command, but output came up ...... <bootloader> Device was already locked!
my hboot screen shows
= JuopnutBear =
Shooter XC ship s-off RL
HBOOT-- 1.50.5050
Looking at your specs, it is not necessary to unlock or relock your bootloader being s-off. Your green lights to go ahead and run the ruu from your PC.

That Rom is pretty stable from my understanding, but maybe try a different one for a while. Maybe one that is sense 3.6 based, like zr3dxl.

after a few weeks. i'm still getting reboots, freezes and shut down..now more frequent, 2-3 times a day. i did the shooter ruu and tried different roms. currently using Mean ics v2.6 what am i doing wrong?
Honestly, with the problems you're describing, it sounds like you need to flash back to stock and take it in to a Sprint repair center. I'm assuming all the freezes and reboots have been an ongoing problem?

that's not really an option. has a bad esn
Then, you're hosed. What you're describing with the freezes and reboots on multiple roms screams hardware issue and no about of flashing software is going to fix that.
