[Q] Subscribing to podcasts - Nokia Lumia 800

Can anybody help? When I add a podcast to my Lumia via the Zune application, I no longer have the 'subscribe' option appearing.I am on the latest Orange UK ROM.

I don't know much about the Zune application since I'm using Windows Phone Connector for Mac and when I add podcasts to my Lumia using WPConnector it gets saved in the music tab (and not on the podcast) so the subscribe option is absent. You can also try turning turning location services off since it may be due to marketplace (specifically podcasts) not available in your location...
I hope this helps!

Software that works on the Lobby.

Hi,
Perhaps it's not my place (Being a newbie )but thought this forum could do with a dedicated thread for comments regarding what software works on the Monet/Lobby and how to load it in.
What software is crap and what software is spectacular.
And where to get it and is it FREE!
I'm sure that I and others will visit frequently for the latest views & opinions.
Just for starters here are some truly FREE ringtones.
Just need to give 'A' email address. Dont bother with Email just download and use 'back-Arrow' to get them all.
Enjoy.
https://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/domore/ringtones.mspx
My 'must have' apps
1. Sprite Backup Personal Edition (Version 5.2.0) - very handy for backup and restore of your Lobby. You can create self-extracting restore 'exe' files on your micro-SD card 'just in case'.
2. Tom Tom Mobile (Version 5.200 (4450)) - brilliant Sat Nav.
3. Automatic Keylock (v3.87) by Danny Baumann. The normal Windows keylock (pressing the Red Hang Up button) doesn't work that good for me. When someone calls you, I had the nasty habit of answering the call before I could see who it was, or even cutting many people off when taking the phone out of my pocket. This app gives you a screensaver that locks the keypad down a little better.
4. RealDice Mutliplayer Championship Poker (Version 4.24). Like playing Texas Hold'em? Why not play against other people over GPRS internet connection? I love this game. Even the AI in the single player is very good. The running costs (in terms of KB playing over the WAP/GPRS) isn't, surprisingly, that much.
5. Avantgo - Sync up all the latest news for your long commute to work.
6. Resco Smartpack - contains System Toys (battery / memory status), Photo Viewer, a more powerful Explorer application and a registry editor. I know that you can get some of these for free, but this pack is trouble free and very well written.
7. TCPMP (aka BetaPlayer) - One big drawback for me is that Windows Media Player doesn't allow you to easily Fast Foward through your movies or music when you are playing them. TCPMP can do this plus it is a fab media player, and there are many other codecs available to play non-Windows files too.
8. CellDoom - If you are as old as me and remember playing Doom on your old 386 then get yourself CellDoom. Dig out your old Doom WAD files and drain your battery playing this
9. Jeyo Mobile Extender for Outlook (Windows Mobile Edition 2.5 (Build: 1258)) - Wish you could text as fast as the Young Guns? If you've got Outlook and a Smartphone then get this. Jeyo Mobile Extender for Outlook allows you to send SMS from your PC (via ActiveSync / USB connection). It will sync up all your Sent, Received and draft texts (SMS messages) on your Outlook too. Excellent for quick, long and multiple recepient messages.
10. Breaksoft Mobile Registry Editor. A PC based application that allows even easier registry access to your Smartphone.
Some of the above applications are free, others you will need to purchase. All can be found via Google
Only the "Automatic Keylock (v3.87) by Danny Baumann" requires the Lobby to be unlocked.
Excellent start to this list ringp3ace.
will def be trying some of these out.
you didn't mention whether or not Lobby needs to be unlocked first though.

While you're there why not get the free golf game too? Download the landscape phone version though as this will run full screen on a QVGA smartphone.

Was in too much of a hurry to get some decent tunes and didn't notice that one.
Good game.

[Q] What Have I Done...

In a moment of madness the other day, I ordered one of these devices. I've had some experience of Android on an HTC Wildfire & Archos 101 so thought it would be a relatively safe bet. But oh no.
Can't find a way to access photos on a Windows Media Connect server with the supplied apps & of course, there's no user guide supplied. Look online & the current user guide is for Gingerbread when the device has Froyo. So I thought I'd check & see if Gingerbread has been released in the UK & if that made any difference. Dear old Samsung can't be like other manufacturers & provide a simple "check for software update" in the settings menu, that would be far too simple. No, you need to download & install a Windows program & update via USB. Now while a PITA, would be just about acceptable if Samsung had ever in their history written a decent piece of Windows software - which they haven't. PC Studio & Emodio being two examples of flaky software with pigeon English. So no surprise whatsoever when Kies proves to be yet another piece of ****.
Anyone have any idea why Kies can't establish a USB connection to W7 despite the mass storage device connecting fine? Just sits there trying to connect. No errors, no timeout, just sits there.
When posting here, you really need to post your variant... 4.0 or 5.0?
I'm surprised you're still on Froyo - usually it's United States customers that get screwed on updates but both the 4.0 and 5.0 are on Gingerbread I'm fairly certain.
Apologies, too busy ranting, it's 5.0.
After trying an XP machine with another USB cable I've discovered that the device has to be manually placed into Kies mode under Settings > USB. Again, why can't they just prompt when the USB is connected like other manufacturers?!
Anyway, so now I finally have Kies running & it tells me that despite the current online manual being for Gingerbread, Froyo is the latest available. Think I'll just give up, send it back & write a big note to self never to buy anything from Samsung again.
"Anyone have any idea why Kies can't establish a USB connection to W7 despite the mass storage device connecting fine?"
Yes, because you have to set the USB mode to KIES mode. That is for Gingerbread; I do not know if that is the case for Froyo, or why you have the old system.
I have a 5.0, never used Kies and don't plan to. USB set on "Mass Storage", connects with USB instantly. I'm on W7. Must used USB cable provided (unless you're lucky and found another that works, many don't). Never used Media Connect, can't help you there, I just dragged all my MP3 into the extrernal SD card.

I have a 5.0 from the UK as well and the 2.3.5 Gingerbread ODIN version posted in the Android Dev section (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389809) works fine on our devices. It even saves you the hassle of using Kies which is a giant pain.
As for Windows Media Connect, not exactly sure what protocol it uses but you may have some luck with the AllShare app provided by Samsung (unsure if it was included in the Froyo version but it is definitely standard in Gingerbread.) Hope you have some luck as it really is a great device once you get past the initial humps. Let us know how it goes.
Thanks guys.

Seen the Odin option but don't really want to start hacking in case it does need to go back. Haven't looked to see if Odin can revert back to Froyo. If it can I may give it a go but hearing reports that Gingerbread knackers the GPS receiver.
AFAIK, Media Connect is just another DLNA. The Gallery app seems to have no option to view anything on the LAN & AllShare seems to be limited to creating AV playlists. It can't view photos & every video file on my server is apparently in an "unsupported format"!
The hardware seems decent enough but I'm not sure I have the will or desire to source replacements for every pre-installed app. My worry going forward is that Samsung pull their usual stunt of "Here's a new model, we don't have to bother with the (6 month) old one now"...
I use File Expert to view/move files/pictures on my home PC, does a wireless connection (as do many explorers). FX File Explorer is also nice (as well as Astro and ES Strong). Most pre-installed apps on any device have much better free counter parts. I don't think I'm use anything that came with the phone (other than system stuff), and I'm not rooted (yet)... but will be so I can get rid of it all for good. Although there's tons of app space, so doesn't bother me much at the moment.
Music Player: Cubed
File Explorer: File Expert
Tasks: Any.do
Calls: GrooveIP
Mail: K9
Photos: Quickpic
Texting: Google Voice
Camera: Camera Zoom
Apps:: Appbrain
Calendar: Yes I am using default calendar! (with Simple Cal Widget)
Kindle Reader
Not much there that came with it!

All of my USB cables work with the device (from N900, N950, various other phones) so I'm not sure why people have troubles with this. But I may just be lucky.

Can't be sure without any proper documentation but it appears to be limited as above.
I'm really not sure the device offers enough to make the effort of rooting in order to uninstall all the garbage worth while.
I'd like to think that the lack of an official Gingerbread release means Samsung are working on fixing the bugs. But my previous experience of their products makes me think otherwise.
Lack of Gingerbread is more likely something weird that's UK-specific... In the US, it's been Gingerbread from the beginning and I think international devices in the rest of the world are too.
I have never had good results with UPnP media format support on any device - even my PS3 is really damn finicky. However it's annoying that the G70 seems to have issues with UPnP streaming of stuff it plays locally.
I rarely view photos on my phone and haven't ever done it on the player, but in my case I have a Smugmug account so I just browse my galleries that way.
It seems like unfortunately your usage patterns are in a corner case where the device doesn't do so well. UPnP support is kinda "meh" - but as I said I've never seen any device where it wasn't. An iPod touch would probably do just as badly trying to browse photos via UPnP.
AllShare plays my HD video files on my server
"AllShare seems to be limited to creating AV playlists. It can't view photos & every video file on my server is apparently in an "unsupported format"!"
I have used AllShare. It sees all of my video files files on my server (just a home computer that shares). And I have played 640x480 AVI video files and a 720p wmv video file from my server smooth as butter and with great resolution on the SGP. It will not stream or play 1080p video files, however (which is in accord with the specs).
For what it's worth, I have no 720 files never mind 1080. AllShare can see them all (a mixture of AVI & MPG mostly) but won't play them. However, I can create a shortcut to them with ES FIle Explorer & play them all fine with Rockplayer. Guess I need to find a photo viewer than can do the same.

Xbox Music Pass

I have the Xbox Music pass and have been able to download music for offline play on my Windows 8 PC and Surface RT.
However I am unable to do anything except stream from my Lumina 920. My Microsoft account shows the 920 as an authorized device.
Anyone have any ideas or gotten this to work?

First thing I would ask, is your Xbox music account linked to the Microsoft account used for login on the phone?
When I go to the Xbox Music Store on the phone, all I see are options to download. Tap the song, it asks if I want to download, I hit download, and I'm done.
Yes all devices are linked and verified on the account website.
I am able to download individually but my tablet and PC stay synced
and will automatically download or remove songs. I should not have
to select each song to download on the phone.

I guess what I meant was, when you setup your phone, did you use the same Login as on the other devices....that is associated with Xbox music?
The actions you describe indicate the account on the phone is not the same one used on your xbox music.
For myself, I am noticing strange things with my accounts. I am seeing the correct things, I can download, but, things like playlists do not have the correct number of songs. Owned CD's are not visible on the phone, even though they sync with Xbox music, The entire music experience, though XBOX music is inconsistent.
I just hard reset my device. I added no music. I simply used xbox music. It should make available to me, everything that is currently synced in the Xbox Music Cloud. My playlist lists 83 songs. On my laptop that same playlist is 303 songs. My laptop includes the new CD, RED, by Taylor Swift. I ripped it to the laptop. It is not included in XBOX Music Cloud for some reason. Hence, it is NOT available on my Phone.
So, even though your situation appears to be an account setup issue, I would not for a second, think it could not be just issues with the new XBOX syncing scenarios. This situation also existed early on with WP7 and Zune too.
Hi,
I picked up the 920 this weekend and I too haven't been able to figure out how to connect my 920 to my Windows 8 Pro.
I'm trying to sync up and download my music to 920 from my music library - thinking the same as I did with the Zune client and WP7.x. I tried downloading the Windows Phone App for Desktop beta but it will not install. After I download it, at the install dialog, after the Help make Windows Phone app better, the install does nothing. The Install button is grayed out.
I thought hat using the desktop app would allow me to download my music but no luck.
Sorry for "hi-jacking" this thread but I'd like to know how to resolve this (adding music to my 920 in "bulk").
Thanks

It should work.
The tool isn't in beta anymore...it was released last week. Make sure you have the correct one. The tool is not as graceful as the Zune tool, and should only move existing music to your wp8.

Thanks for the reply. You know, I didn't think about the Windows Phone app from the Store. I am so used to the classic desktop app (like the Zune client), I forgot about the "Store" app.
With that said, when I plug in my 920, I get a "Your phone is having troubles" error message. I tried powering off, changing cables, ports, etc. but nothing.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
This issue seems to be widespread and I assume MS will pick it up/fix it soon.

Also keep in mind, that various news sites often report the same thing. I've not seen or heard of this issue.
Consider this. Do a back up of your device, then hard reset it. Try again. People not hard resetting their devices out of box, do have a higher rate of failure than those that don't.
Plus, with backup in place, its not really that much of PITA to get back up running.

Sorry, there is 1 more thing to try with this.
Try going to xbox.com...or any Microsoft account site, and simply, change your password. See if that does not help.
I recall this recall I did indeed see this message on my phone. But not only on my phone, but every place xbox related that I happened to looking at...I was doing a lot of XBOX Music reading. I connected to chat...eventually, they told me to change my password and immediately all the messages on all the sites went away, and I was able to connect.
Here's the issue...your WP8 device must be set up using your zune/xbox live ID as the default in order for "seamless" use and more importantly downloading of music etc. You can add your other live accts after and have you email/contacts etc...but you can't use another live ID for the default and have XBox/zune working with downloads. This is the same issue on W8 however on the W8, you can work around it by using a local acct and let Xbox/zune log in as your subscription acct. For WP8 though, there is no such workaround.
This plagued me in WP7 and is still here in 8. Don't ask me why I can't just "change my xbox/zune liveid and still have my history/purchases." MS really needs to resolve this but until then...this is the reality and above is how to get it to work with xbox/zune and have your other liveids all on the same device.
Hope thus helps!

How's this different from other competing phones? Android, you have to log in with a specific account to get the goodies. I believe the same with Apple.
Since the premise of primary login, linked screens and services is what Microsoft is trying to achieve, allowing an alternative to accessing these services on a device...doesn't make sense to me. But that's just my opinion.
Here is how the problem presented itself for me.
Lumia 900 for about a year now. Over 1000 songs downloaded via zune pass (not purchased). My PC is windows 7. Sync all my songs between my pc and my lumia 900. Bought lumia 920. Plugged it in, downloaded new windows phone app for my pc. It did sync all my music from my Zune app on my pc to the new windows phone app on my pc. Then i proceeded to sync all my music to my shiny new lumia 920. All my music that I had now will not play on my 920 because of the DRM message.
All music that I ***PURCHASED*** works just fine because i purchased the DRM rights as opposed to "renting" them w/ my zune pass subscription.
Music that i have downloaded directly to my new lumia 920 from the xbox music store will play perfectly fine. Issue is w/ old content from my pc.
Funny you mentioned the album Red. Was in my mustang using sync having my friend play with phone. She picked Red but it only did a 30 second clip. Double checked with other artists and am good. Then I remembered not all artists or maybe albums have a license for streaming. It has always been this way. I am not seeing all 26 gb of songs yet showing up on my 920 so don't know if it is still synching content.

[Q] New Lumia 920 owner.....probably a stupid question

Hi guys. To start off with.....I'm blonde and technically challanged....so type slow
Is there a way to save my contacts onto my SIM card......I know it saves the contacts onto the computer, but I'd much rather save them onto the SIM
The other question I had was about the Music. This phone advertises that you can download music for free, but I haven't been able to find how to do this.....does this have to be done from the computer? All the music I can find on the phone is charged.
I love this phone, the camera is awesome, the apps I've seen are crazy My only whinge would be the crappiest user guide ever! Honestly, why put all these fantastic features on the phone then not tell you how to operate them? I've managed to muddle my way through most of it (blonde hair and all) but would have been easier to sit down and read how to do it.
Thanks in advance guys.
To save to sim card, People hub, three dots bottom right, settings, import sim contacts, should have the option to export too.
Not sure about the music as I only use what I have on PC or buy from store, I did hear you can stream for free using either Nokia Music or xbox I think?
Have fun :fingers-crossed:

About the music, you have to download Nokia Music (when it doesnt show in the market, change your country to UK in the settings>region) and there you will see the mix radio. You can stream free music (with internet connection) then make it available offline.

No, you cannot save contacts to the SIM. They are automatically saved to your Live/Outlook.com account online.
Apart from the Nokia mix radio app that allows you to make mixes available for offline listening there are some apps that allow you to download individual tracks and create your own playlists for offline use. One such app is Amazing Music.

There is a downloadable PDF user guide available from Nokia. Just visit their website to download.

Or you can install an app called My Windows Phone which gives you a how to guide on your phone.

Android user asks questions

I am due for an upgrade later this month. I am an Android user of phones & tablets for more than 3 years so i am very used to the OS with its massive customisations, etc. But i have been noticing in the background that Windows Phone 8 is slowly gaining fans and i would like to know why. I'd like to convince myself. In particular i'm interested with the Lumia 920 and the newer 925/928 model:
1. Does the Lumia have a Bluetooth feature that can connect to any Bluetooth wireless speakers? And can one send files via bluetooth to any bluetooth-enabled Android phone?
2. Does the Lumia have a quick toggle to settings to instantly turn on or off settings such as wifi, Bluetooth, brightness, etc. (much like the notification drop down bar of Android)
3. Is there a customisable equaliser settings to the new Lumias? Surround sound? Bass? Preset EQ settings?
4. Can I set a Playlist, edit a Playlist name and set songs to a Playlist on-the-fly? If no then what app can do that?
5. Can I drag n drop files from my Mac to a Lumia with a need or no need of another software?
6. Can I still access my Google apps & services such as YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Currents, Chrome, etc.?
7. Is there a pinch to zoom feature in zooming objects for taking photos? Is there an option to easily share them via Email, Bluetooth, Twitter, Instagram, Dropbox, etc.? A way to set photos as a phones's lockscreen wallpaper? A way to edit photos and share them? if so which app do i need?
8. Any "swype to type" typing feature? (For faster typing)
9. Any good alternatives music player, video player for the Lumia?
10. Notification Centre - is it true that one can view a notification (from email, Twiiter, Facebook, etc.) on the lock screen? And how do i "access" or see my notification? Do i swype or just click it?
11. Is there a unified & a fully customomisable news app similar to Google Currents?
12. Sideloading apps - is this possible with WP8? Is there an alternative app store other than WP8's?
Android has tons of alternative/3rd-party app stores where one can look, download & install .apk files on almost any device available out there. Is this also possible with WP8?
13. Would the copy & paste capability be possible in almost anywhere ON THE device itself? How do i copy & paste btw?
14. A way to set Google as a default search option?
15. Software updates - found this "1308" update but it would seem there is the newer "1314" update. What's the real deal? Is it true the 1308 update vastly improved the camera's features and the battery life? ('cause i can't see that info on the website) And how often would those "minor" updates be like performance updates, battery life improvements, new features, etc.
16. Any good note-taking app?
17. How does one go back to view last viewed sites on IE10? Is it any way possible to save them on the hard drive of the phone so i can view them again & again?
18. A way or possibility to print wirelessly to a bluetooth wireless wifi printer?
19. Can one create folders (like a folder for Games, News apps, etc.) like in Android?
20. A very good .pdf viewer please?
21. Can i easily edit a Contact's name, phone number, details, etc.?
22. Can i set a Calendar event or note?
23. Is there a way to edit or change the tile icons on the "main" home screen?
24. Does the camera of the Lumias (in particular the 920) is BSI and HDR features?
Again, read of reviews that the camera is good but photos can sometimes be "washed out" and looks blurry when zoomed in.
25. Screenshots - With Android there is a way to take a screenshot of your phone's current screen. IS this possible with WP8? If yes then how?
26. A good alternative to Google Maps where i can check for transport updates and how to get from point A to B or how to find nearby shops or restaurants?
27. How often does Nokia or MS updates their phones?
28. The battery is only 2000mAh which compare to Android or iPhones is very tiny. How long does the phone lasts for Music? Video? Moderate use?
Please advice. Thanks.

I'm not looking for a Nokia Android phone here. Sure some questions i have been asking were"asked" before that is why i had to slightly change as to how i ask a specific question.
So far i like some of the replies in here. Very interesting OS compared to Android or IOS. For me one way to really know if i like a phone is to go to a shop. Which i've done today.
I went to an O2 store and saw the Lumia 920 & the 925. Both headphone jack were closed as i wanted to try out the vaunted Dolby headphones sound enhancement. The sales rep explained that he cannot do something about anything as he seem to suggest the brackets around the phone that covers the headphone jack is to "prevent the phones getting stolen". Jeez. An early turn off so i went to an EE shop instead.
EE had a working Lumia 920 so went to try it out. Camera seems slightly better than my S3 but noticed there were very few settings to dabble. Wasn't very much convinced with the Dolby sound enhancement (GSMArena were right after all); I wasn't sure if the software of the unit i was given was updated but i was using a mid-range 2-month old Sony earphones i must say. Even after changing the EQ to Custom sound was still somehow "flat" and lacking personality. Was able to try send a file from my S3 to the 920 with a bit of ease although it took about a minute which by todays' standards isn't great but isn't bad either.
What i still don't like:
1. Lack of an alternative app store
2. Lack of alternative browser
3. Lack of a really good altenrative music player with my above needs
4. Lack of .mkv and .srt support in video player
5. Slowness in transferring files via bluetooth
6. The need for a software in order to transfer files. Although someone did menttioned i can just copy & paste files and put them in a folder.
7. Uninspiring and seemingly flat audio/music quality when headphones are connected (even with Dolby On)
8. Non-removable & "low capacity" battery
9. Small 4.5" screen
10. Lack of or the inability to print to a wireless printer
11. Inability (?) for the phone to act as a wifi hotspot
12. Lack of swiping action for faster typing on keyboard
13. Inability to set Google as a search option
14. Inability to save a webpage as a .pdf file for future viewing
15. Few camera options & settings
16. No ability to edit a photo within OS/device
17. Inability to create folders tiles (for quick access to apps)
What also bothered me when i was in the EE shop was what the sales rep told me. She said that many people have been returning their Lumia 920s (i.e. rate of Lumias being returned were MANY!) for repair because of various problems such as bad incoming/outgoing call quality, screen issues and rebooting/crashing issues. She also bluntly advised me to get a Galaxy S4 or the HTC One instead.
Doesn't help with building up confidence does it?
Only the AT&T version allows you to tether and have up to 5 devices connected to it. But you have to have the second tier data package. Yes you can print to a wireless printer over WiFi (maybe another AT&T exclusive). It uses windows for godsake. If a PC can do it, this phone can do it. As for camera settings. It's a phone. If you want camera settings, then get a camera.
All app can be made into a tile simply by tapping and holding until the menu pops up to pin to desktop. The the file can be resized and positioned as you want it.
Google as a search option? Just make it your browser homepage. So what if it is just one more click. Has society really become this lazy?
That small screen is IPS and blows away all the other phones out there regardless of size. Also the gorilla glass is near diamond hard. Ok exaggeration but it is much harder than any other display out there.
You must have missed the edit photo option. You can cut, crop, change colors, and all kinds of edit options. Maybe that is another AT&T only feature.
My low capacity battery last 12 hours under full load and recharges in two with the wireless charger. Not sure what you want, but it is a computer in your pocket and you will not get phone life out of the battery.
Saving a webpage as a PDF. an Andy will not do that by default. So just wait for an app to be made. Or hey just bookmark it and view it over wifi.
There are alternative app stores for WP8. you just have to get into the right click. They are not made public since MS would shut them down.
There are three browsers that are free on the app store and six more you can pay for.
Did you even really try this out yourself or just let others opinions sway you like a typical sheeple? You know the site you keep referring to is biased against WP and MS products. So of course they will give this phone a negative review.
I am sorry to sound harsh but you tried one version from one provider. They are different. There are at this moment three types of 920 out there. The AT&T, The Rogers, and the all others. Each have some variations in functions and quality. As well as variations in the OS.
You also don't need software to transfer files. Not sure where you got that from but if the phone is plugged into a PC it behaves just like a USB drive and can be explored by windows explorer and you just drag and drop files just like another hard drive.
Bluetooth for file transfer is old school and slow. The S3 as well as the Lumia has a tap to send feature that when both phones are near each other you just select a file, select tap to send, find the other phone in the list and tap it. The other phone if feature is turned on will acknowledge a waiting file. You confirm it and it transfers over the TTS network between the phones. Faster than BT by the way.
There are several MKV players in the store, but they are not free.
I'm sorry but it just sounds like you are picking the phone apart and trying to convince yourself not to get one. If you are happy with Andy then the Lumia is not for you just to be blunt. Most Lumia users are tired of Andy or iPhone and that is why they switched. You will not get the customization of Andy with this phone. What you will get is a good rugged phone that has an OS that runs it like it should with minimal apps to perform most day to day things. You will get a camera that rivals lower end SLR's in quality even if it does not have all the bells and whistles. Yes there are SLR users here who have compared the pic quality and in some case it was better on this phone. You will get an OS that runs smoothly and fast and again does what it should. I will say it one last time. If you are happy with Andy or iPhone then this phone is not for you. This phone is a first phone, or a phone for those tired of the cookie cutter phones/OS's out there.
I do not think GSMArena is "biased" to WP & MS products. Why would they? Please enlighten me. The reason they have "negative" reviews of the Lumias is because its the truth i suppose. And the truth sometimes hurts isn't it?
And you might also ask yourself: why would the sales person be biased in saying the rate of returns is enormous because of such & such issues? Please enlighten me. Of all shops i went to (O2, EE & Carphone Warehouse) most of them sell (YES) Android phones (as many companies make Android phones...duh!), iPhones AND Windows phone 8 phones.
Again, let me ask (and challenge you)...why would the sales person be biased? I don't think its because they use Android phones most of the times. I simply don't think so. These people are trained to use and be familiar with ALL types of phones. The only reason i could think of is their reputation. Many returns (for repairs or otherwise) will ultimately have a negative effect on them.
I also heard of incompatibility with the EE network. If the phone is 4G-ready/capable it shouldn't be a compatibility issue. Its the issue of the maker of the phone (and OS) itself isn't it? If the phone is not up to what it can do or is capable of doing then i would rather go for a tried and tested and familiar phone & OS that is Android. I'm aware some companies release different versions of their phones depending on the country/market but still that doesn't help at all.
Also, the trouble with these shops is their phones are most of the times not updated so the software & other improvements are not there for you to experience. The headphone jack might be "locked" by the braces holding the phone or the phone isn't charged at all. Its a lose-lose situation.
Look i am not looking for a perfect Nokia Android phone as i will not find one. I know its either Windows Phone 8 or Android OS.
I made myself clear on my previous reply about my experience in the phone shops and the negative things i have known and read.
If i get the Lumia 920 right now on a 24-month contract with EE will they allow me to return the phone simply because "im not happy with it"? I guess we all know the answer to these question. All they care about is getting money from you and that's it.
Doesn't inspire confidence does it?
I know AT&T gives you a 14 day return period even on a 24 month contract. If you go beyond 14 days then they hit you with the phones full price if you break contract. The issue is not the phone, with 4G. 4G from provider to provider is on different frequencies. This phone like all others only supports 4G and LTE on certain frequencies. If your provider does not support those frequencies then there is nothing that you nor Nokia can do. You need to bust your providers balls to support the other frequencies as well. Good luck on that though since they will just tell you to use a phone they provide. If you want the Lumia to function 100% then you have to buy it from a provider who supports it and use their network. Buying it and trying to use it on a network that it was not intended for will result in fail most of the time. Or the very least a lot of flashing and tweaking and still may not be 100%.
I will say it again. If you like Android and are happy with it then stay with it. To me it sounds like you have already decided against this phone anyways. You Are not going to get somebody in a Lumia forum to flat out tell you not to buy it. So if you are looking for somebody to confirm your feelings you won't get it here. The bottom line is that this phone is not for somebody who is happy with their current OS. This phone is a phone for those just starting or those just fed up with the other stuff out there.
Well thank you all for your replies and insights.
If i get a Windows Phone 8 phone right now i feel it is a way backward not forward. I'm familiar with Android OS so i think i'll stick it out with them.
