I was thinking if it is necessary to do a full wipe when I'll update my XU to ICS? Did you wipe your Xperia P when you updatet it to ICS? Because I have lots of games installed and so on and I don't want to lose the savegames.... Will the system be buggy if I don't wipe?
Even line 2011 ICS update didn`t wipe data so line 2012 should be same
~Its good if you could wipe data before upgrading ur firmware. I prefer backing up my phone before doing any kind of upgrade.

As you all know, before installing new rom we we have to wipe data and cache in recovery...
But do we have also to wipe dalvik's cache?
As you read on every ROM thread, it is advisable to do a CLEAN wipe meaning all of it before installing a different rom. I personally don't find any difference between wiping and not wiping.
When upgrading CyanogenMOD nightlies wiping is pointless, and a waste of time. When switching between Sense-based ROMs and CM etc. then a full wipe is recommended, but not always needed. Wiping dalvik cache will never hurt
Just a thought here, but isn't DC in /data ? So if you wipe data you wipe DC as well, no?
I've been flashing Mdj Droid L2.1.110210 rom but the only thing I am seeing is the HTC screen for over 10 minutes. Is there anybody helps me to solve this issue? I am newbie so I cannot post in Mdj Droid L2.1.110210 topic.
Thank
I always wipe because it cleans the dust. As GrammarFreak said, when switching between CM nightlies, it is pointless as of the minor changes that come with them. But switching to an entirely new ROM (like stock -> CM) I thin it is better to wipe everything. The cause: Android DO collect junk, and a clean system is always nice.
Regarding contact, sms and other app data: backup to phone and cloud, simple as hell.
thanks for the advice. so if you flash anew rom, do u lose all ur apps every time? i'm flashing ics on my g2 alpha 8 right now. so i will find out soon enough

In my experience (using a HTC Desire HD) you only lose your apps and settings when you perform a full-wipe before flashing a new rom. When you update your rom without wiping, your settings and apps are not removed. However, I personally like to do a full-wipe before flashing a rom, because it clears out al the dust and gives you a fresh new phone.
If you don't want to lose your apps and data, but you do want to wipe, you can offcourse always use Titanium Backup to make a backup of the apps and data.
Just do it! It's free (costs only a slightly longer startup the first time after you wipe dalvik)!

in my experience, this happens when you dont clear the cache prior to updating the rom. in my case, I had to re-apx mine, since I didnt figure this out until I had tried the factory rom. good thing I had the SBK and CPUid, or it would have been even a more painful experience!
I have the rom from this thread and its the version RLS2 RC1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192869
My question is I want to update from the RLS2 RC1 to the • RLS2 Official but do I do it as if I was installing another new rom or do I update it with a certain method?
Also what is the MD5 SUM below the download link?
just flash the new rom and you set
but since I already have the older version of this rom do I still need to do a complete wipe? or is there a way to just update?
Always best to do complete wipe ... I use titanium backup and speeds up reinstalling everything TONS paid for pro version
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
thanks was just making sure, i figured if you were just updating your current rom there would be an easier method or that you could just apply and update as if it were from sprint
It's also a good practice to check the thread of the ROM you're updating to see what the OP suggests as far as full wipe or just a wipe of the cache and dalvik then flash. In most cases, as long as the framework hasn't changed from one version to the other you should be ok w/ just a wipe of cache and dalvik. YMMV
Joel actually said you needed a full wipe because he changed the default.xml, but in future iterations you shouldn't need to full wipe, just cache and dalvik
thanks guys i feel alot better about it now, cant wait to do it when i get home
Hi All, This is actually a hypothetical question at this point, bit of brief history..
Am basically a noob with my X10 mini Pro have been flashing some custom roms this year and just this morning made the leap to unlocked boot loader/zombiepanic kernel v1.63/GinTonic.SE 2.1 its all working perfectly and am very happy.
My question then is do I have to do a full factory reset slash wipe every time I do a ROM install? I have been doing this lately more because changed around from other ROMs, slade87 has been doing an excellent job of updating his ROM and kernel with functions and fixes. But I cannot see myself having the energy to reinstall all my apps and redo settings every time a new build is released.
So after long question will I be able to flash new build over current without loosing my apps and data? Know xrecovery always seemed to wipe my phone but when I changed to clockworkmod my first install was a direct upgrade and it worked fine without loosing anything!
If I cannot install without loosing my data is there an easier way to backup my apps and reload them, titanium backup just sat and prompted me to reinstall them all which is what I am already doing.
I apologize for the long nature of question but wanted to explain to avoid confusion.

Restore the titanium backup.. The option apk+data.. Ul get to ur normal application settings..but its better to restore only the apk's and not its data.. N about makin a factory reset after flashing.. Yes u need to do when u switch from one ROM to another.. Otherwise if u are just upgradin to higher version of the same, just make a cache wipe and dalvik wipe with CWM.. N u can backup ur (SMS)messages with my baackup pro in the market..
Gintonic.SE + zombie-pack kernel by slade ..
Awesome thanks for the response faiyyaz, understand the process now
Hey guys,
I don't know if this question has been asked but my girlfriend has an X10 Mini Pro and I recently flashed it to paul-xxx's awesome MiniCM7 Pro and just recently he came up with a newer update.
Question is if I wanna flash it to this newer 1, do I need to wipe the data or can I just flash it without having to wipe the data?
Thanks so much for the help guys & I'm sorry if this question has been asked before.
just flash the new version without wiping the data (factory reset), all the info will stay there. it works perfectly, but be advised that in two weeks or so you might want to do a full wipe since the rom may become a bit slow.
I usually do that because it's a pain to restore every information and downloaded apps and such.
don't forget to make a backup before installing any new version
I was experimenting trying out Lupohirps ICS port and I forgot to do a factory reset before flashing I was running CM7 Nightly build #31
Imagine my surprise when after only wiping Dalvik the phone booted and loaded up ICS with all my apps and data still intact saved me having to reload all my apps and data from my backups.
Have found some other bugs in ICS one major one is total system lockups if you use ADW Launcher EX.
I just thought you may like to know that you don't have to Factory Reset to install Lupohirps ICS if your running CM7 Nightly just wipe dalvik cache and it will work did for me.
Lucky dude...
U are indeed lucky dude..
Anyway just see if you are getting any fc..
