[Q] ics for vibrant - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I'm new here but, had an android for a couple years now. I have the tmobile samsung vibrant running 2.2 froyo. Can anyone tell me in detail how to install ICS on my phone? To be honest, I do not understand all the talk about odin and all that stuff. So if you can explain as if it were ICS for to Vibrant For Dummies that would be great lol. Explain in laymens terms please. Thanks
Peppino

Guess I'll post this again: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wMQQDpqVNBk

Everything in that video is not all correct. There are some specific parts that are left out.
OP, I understand you want to simplest way to go from 2.2 ->4.0 but in reality, you need to eventually know how to use Odin, or when you get stuck at a bootloop or your CWR gets corrupted, your next thread will be "Help, I brivked my phone".
Check my signature for the How to install ICS and above all, you need to read, read and then read some more (case in point, this was already answered here Trouble with my vibrant...).
Good luck and if you have any questions, use the search function and/or Google, as this phone has been around a long time and most questions have already been solved. If not, then just ask.

hi, It is always better to go ICS from the beginning.. which solves many problems. So in order to go back to stock you should use ODIN. It is very easy ONLY thing is DONT DISCONNECT USB connectivity while the process is running.
After that you will need some things.
ICS ROM to flash (try ICZen which works great )
GB Bootloader
CM7
update.zip (CWM) which can be found in woody's signature. [Installing ICS ROMs; A Vibrant Step-by-Step]
Once you are in stock 1st flash GB Bootloader through ODIN (DO NOT do anything until it is flashed)
then flash CM7 (GB ROM b/c its suggested to go ICS from GB rather than from 2.1)
then flash ICS ROM on top of it. initial boot will take up more time.
voilaa..!!!
Always do full wipe (data, cache, dalvik) in between flashes.
there are many ICS ROMs available .. READ instructions carefully.
Note: these steps are taken from threads I referred and followed by me.

[Q] I am looking for the stock T959 (Vibrant) bootloader, and detailed instructions.

I originally set out to upgrade to the latest CM7 build, but got an error about proper load EDITstatus 7) and it would not upgrade. So I decided to just put the official 2.3 on my Vibrant, however now it seems I have a different bootloader, the I9000 bootloader.
Ultimately I would like to get back to full stock, including bootloader so I can start fresh and hopefully get CM7 installed or at least the official 2.3 installed. I currently have stock JFD installed (using Odin).
If there is a way with my current install (i9000 bootloader and JFD) to get CM7 nightly I would love to know how to do that. I have tried the wiki instructions, but I am not able to get Heimdall Suite to work (I have Lion installed on my Mac, and it just does not want to find the phone no matter what on my pc). I have Rom Manager Premium but I do not see CyanogenMod listed under downloadable roms.
I have a ton of bookmarked pages of how to install CM7, but I think my problem is the bootloader as I can not seem to get CM7 to install from recovery. Perhaps there is a way to put CM7 on my T959 using Odin?
I have also found one download with a boot.bin and sbl.bin inside a .rar, but since there were not decent instructions for how to load these using Odin (if that is even how you do it), I didnt want to attempt bricking my phone.
I would say im a pretty advanced user, I have in the past installed with out any problem many different roms (Bionix, Miui). Any advice is welcome. Please help me get back to my precious CM7
When trying to install the CM7 kernel from recovery i get the following error:
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") =="galaxys2" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "galaxys2" .... Status 7

and so on.
I got my kernel from here and have tried kernels from the CM7 wiki, as well as roms from there as well. I know it normally means it is a miss match between the phone and software (status 7), but I have a T959, and I have tried from the official vibrant wiki at CM7.

Thanks for the thread. This seems to have a the original bootloaders, and a lot of other nice bootloaders for gingerbread. I will test it out tonight and let you know if this worked for me.
If you happen to have a link for installing CM7 with Odin please let me know.

glad its what you wanted, i was in abit of a rush and just read the thread name so posted that
I have been trying some stuff, the official bootloader from there didnt pass MD5 check in odin. please read my update/edit if you can help.
I, too, have been messing around with the Vibrant way too many times and it has bricked on me at least 6 times already because (stupid me) I went from ROM to ROM without Odin-ing back to stock.
Pertaining to your matters, Im not sure exactly where you're stuck right now. If you're stuck ODIN-ing, check to see if you have the right PIT file. If anything, redownload the stock JFD and stock PIT file and re-do it again. I've read somewhere, you really cant "brick" an android unless its hardware related or you throw your phone out the window.
If you're stuck trying to get CM7 on your vibrant then... wait, why are you trying to get Nightlies on your vibrant? I say you're better of flashing CM7 Trigger Redux (which is what I'm using now). I've heard its much better with more features (working GPS and more) than Nightlies. In case you wanted to check it out, heres the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156123
But anyhow, you're decision. From past experiences, after I ODIN back to stock, I rooted the stock and downloaded ROM Manager and then flashed the ROM that I wanted like Trigger Redux or Bionix. This pretty much worked for me. Hope this helps.

[SOLVED]Cannot install ICS ROM--please HELP

hi,
I am sorry if this is a dumb question. But i have failed several attempts while shifting to ICS (RC 5 by team-nyx). Every time when i install ROM & kernel via CWM and boot the device (vibrant t959) it freezes on the screen with VIBRANT and SAMSUNG displaying WHITE on BLACK back ground.
i have gone back to JFD and tried several times BUT same result.
I was on froyo 2.2 (build UVKB5) updated via kies and did it but no luck. I followed wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Vibrant:_Full_Update_Guide and did starting from No. 03 --
downloaded Cmenard's Kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5
Heimdall Suite 1.3.2 for windows
AND upto No. 9 under Windows ONLY: section
the CWM installs as it says (A blue transfer bar will appear on the phone showing the kernel being transferred. The device will reboot automatically. )
after that i cleared factory, cache and dalvik cache.
then I select install Zip from SD card and chose the ROM (which is from team-nyx.com/index.php/releases).
after 3% it says rebooting and vibrant shuts down and reboots.. when after I clicked the combo (vol+vol-power) to enter the CWM its not there.. so I reinstall using [heimdall flash --kernel zImage] command in PC's cmd. then after i redid the same to select from SD and then ROM installed ok.
then I selected the kerenel which was taken by same source and installation went normal..
after I select reboot from CWM it reboots and hangs on vibrant screen.
I cannot figure OUT WHAT IM doing WRONG..
Please HELP ME..!!!
thank you for your time
I am moving to 2.2 via kies after going back to stock JFD. then i will root my vibrant. after that i will install ROM manager from market. THEN i will try to FLASH to ICS RC 5 + kernel from nyx TEAM.
I dont know what is wrong.. please HELP
From what you told us it sounds right. Have you tried a different ICS rom? Give ICS slim a try. When you Odin back did you checked re-partition?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk 2
You should try flashing the Gingerbread bootloaders using Odin after you flash back to stock. Those bootloaders can run a Froyo ROM as well as ICS so it wouldn't hurt to do either way. After you flash the bootloader then try flashing the ROM.
And try a different ROM like iwillkillyou suggested. Slim is good, but ICZen is very solid if you're tipping your toes into ICS.

Just so that you know, everytime you are using Kies, you are running the risk of hardbricking your device. It is notorius for that and in fact someone last week got HBricked with it.
I don't use ROM Manager and probably won't as long as I have a Vibrant. All you need to do is go back to JFD and pull the CWR from my signature and put it on your internal_sd and label it as Update.zip. Then boot into recovery and hit Reinstall PAckages (might have to do this twice) and your stock recovery (blue) will go to CWR (green) and you can flash away.
Also for more detailed instructions, se my ICS install giude also in my signature.

Thank you for the links.. I downloaded and place CWR inside SD. Without kies can we install official releases via Odin.. is there any way.. im sorry if that is a stupid question
No stupid questions. That is why we are here. I am pretty sure there is a flashable 2.2 stock floating aroung here. I personally don't have it though. Custom 2.2's are at this point tweaked so completely out, that they will blow the doors off any 2.2 stock ROM out there. I usggest Moped_Ryder's ROMs and Fishman's Bionix-redux ROMs. Quality, fast and stable. Not ICS, but everything works and no fear of the dreaded Encryption Bug.
PM incoming btw.

thank you. btw can we Flash to 2.2 via CWM .. directly selecting the ROM from SD .. without Odin
If you can find it, you should be able to. Just put on your card and flash away, taking care to wipe accordingly.
A note on flow though:
2.1, 2.2 -can go into and out of any 2.2 there is laterally.
2.3-4.0 -will need to Odin to stock before going back to a 2.2 ROM. Can move laterally from 4.0 to 4.0 though.
(i.e DO NOT try to restore a 2.2 nandroid or flash a 2.2 ROM when you are on an ICS variant. the /system is completely changed and reformatted. You need to Odin to get it back.)
Moped Ryder uploaded a semi tweaked version of the stock 2.2 build. It's a zip that you can just flash using CWR:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674519
It comes rooted with busybox and some other goodies, but it's the stock kernel and whatnot. I'd highly recommend Fishman's Bionix-V Mod or Moped Ryder's Slim_Ryder ROMs if you're going to be on Froyo though. They're both great, but I went with Fishman's latest Bionix Mod since I couldn't get bluetooth to work on Moped Ryder's ROM. Which is really unfortunate because I loved Moped Ryder's otherwise.
And you don't have to Odin back to stock if you're just bouncing around Froyo or Eclair builds; only if you're coming from Gingerbread or ICS (2.3 or 4.0).
Keep us updated. I'm curious to see what worked. It's probably the gingerbread loaders. But, who knows.

BUT it didnt worked for me instead freezes at Vibrant start-up screen. So i Couldnt switch back to CWM. I Odin back to JFD with repartition clicked and my vibrant was locked (network lock). Finally, I got it cleared by application named Galaxy_S Unlock by Helroz from the market.
Now I am at the very beginning again. I am now on 2.1 JFD. I dont know WHY this happening to me .. :crying:
gonna try again with GB bootloaders.. BUT Im sick of failing and going back to 2.1 (my friends who are having captivate had no problem)

At the time i was trying it was NOT rooted.. But now i have it rooted because i needed to unlock the network . which happened me for the very first time after flashing back to JFD using Odin..
Thank you guys for the links and thoughts on 2.2 ROMs.. I am not that expert . Thats why i was updating to 2.2 via KIES -- which is not a good idea as it seems with the ability 2 brick the device. I am going to get Bionix-V FishmanMod V4 FULL and install as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441976 says..
It says Boot into clockwork recovery and i think i found something to do that in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734164
I have to get ROM manager from market and go through it..
BUT Im damn upset with the RC5 ICS update by nyx being unable to installed into my device.. I will try with GB bootloaders flashed ..
If you are going to go with Fish's ROM, then all you need to do is Odin back to JFD and pull the CWR from my signature and put it on your internal_sd and label it as Update.zip. Then boot into recovery and hit Reinstall Packages (might have to do this twice) and your stock recovery (blue) will go to CWR (green) and you can flash away.
Fish also has a Odin package that you can flash his ROM through Odin and not have to deal with CWR.
ROM Manager is no longer supporting 2.1, so if you do go back to JFD, then it will be hard to get RM. It is out there somewhere but really all you need is the Update.zip from above to do it. I suggest that you stay on Fish's ROM for awhile and read about ICS installs and all the little things that are involved. If you do flash Fish's ROM, you don't need to mess with the bootloaders.
Btw, aside from Kies, messing with Bootloaders is one of the sure fire ways to hardbrick your device. It only takes seconds to flash them, but do it wrong and, well you know.
Good luck and ask if you have any.

thanks alot for the info brother.. some guys told me STUPID.. but YOU guys are awesome.. I am a newbie to this flashing and stuff.. but learned a lot from XDA . Thanks again for the reply. now I have stock 2.1 with ROOT . (rooted cuz i had to unlock the vibrant). I will flash to Fish's 2.2 ROM soon. BTW may i ask you after moving to Fish's ROM and later if i need to move to ICS still can I do it without messing with Bootloaders..
Thank you
That is what we are here for in the Q&A/General sections.
Regaring your question about Gingerbread bootloaders being needed:::Yes and No.
Gingerbread bootloaders were required in the infancy of ICS ROMs bc they prevented what is called "Rainbows" in your clockwork where you couldn't see anything. The options were there but you just couldn't see them. Then as ICS evolved, the need for GB bl's lessened and now you don't need them at all.
But...There's always a but...Gingerbread bl's are recommended by most of the devs for ICS builds because they seem to work better with the custom recoveries that come with some of the kernels. There is more to it but in short, GB bl's are not required but recommended.
If you go to my ICS install guide, in the middle pages and more again at the end, Yosup (highly respected user) and I have a detailed conversation about bootloaders and their installation. Once he got over the fear and did it, he was hooked and flashing ICS ROMs weekly if not more. It is a very informative section of that thread.

Can't install any application on my Vibrant

Hello, at the start i wanted to install some new ICS rom for my Vibrant..i try to root it with one click and i couldn't do that coz i had froyo(2.2update)..so i read some forums and found solution in odin...i used that to turn back to stock eclair where i rooted the phone ...but the problem is that now i can't install any application on the device(i need ROM manager)..i get to android market and ,click on application but nothing is happening, no download at all...than i try to use android injection with apks that i found on the net , but nothing, i always get INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK...so now i am stuck i have: fimware version-2.1 update 1,baseband T959UVJFD, kernel 2.6.29 can you tall me should i do?? thx
Read the guide in my signature on how to install ICS ROMs. It has an update.zip that you can use for CWR.
ROM manager no longer supports 2.1 (Eclair), so that is why you can't see it in the market.
Download the clockwork mod recovery file (update.zip) and save it to the internal storage on the phone. Then reboot into recovery and install packages. Might have to do it twice. Then you'll be in CWM recovery. Install from from there.

FWIW, and this is not a knock on Team Passion (they do excellent work but few updates), but Euphoria is somewhat outdated. There are plenty of ICS ROMs out there that are more up-to-date and when ICS went from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 there were significant code changes that were done. I suggest ICZen, or Slim or CM9.
But if you want to stay on Euphoria (AOKP based), this is from my guide:
If you get the RANDOM OFFSET error.
Don't freak out. This is an ICS security feature (as posted in Passion's FAQ post). All you have to do is pull your battery and boot back into recovery and reflash ICS over itself (just like you did with the initial CM7 bootloop) and it should push through. You may need to do this multiple times. I have read of people having to do it up to 5x. YMMV though.

[Q] How to Unlock & Backup Bootloader for Samsung Vibrant?

Hello,
I upgraded my Samsung Vibrant to Froyo 2.2 with Samsung Kies Mini several months ago. I reverted to Eclair 2.1 with Odin in order to install ClockworkMod Recovery and unlock my phone. Now my phone is unlocked, rooted and with ClockworkMod Recovery installed.
1. I want to flash custom ROMs based on either Gingerbread or ICS. I tried to unlock my bootloader by following the instructions on addictivetips.com (when I typed "fastboot oem unlock" it only reboots the phone). Why is it not asking me if I want to unlock the bootloader?
2. I did a Nandroid Backup and I wonder if I need to backup the boot partition anyway. If so, is it OK to do it with RomDump?
3. Since I reverted to Eclair 2.1, does that mean I have an Eclair bootloader? Or do I still have the Froyo bootloader? Will Gingerbread bootloaders work on ICS based ROMs?
Last... Could you please recommend ROMs to flash with Odin? The one I found on CyanogenMod comes with problems when dialing 911
Thank you for your patience!
Your rooted, and you have CWM. Your making it more difficult that need be.
Flash the ROM in CWM, with install zip from SD. Follow flashing instructions in the OP of the ROM.
There are custom GB bootloaders, I have them, but some people don't use them.

Hello again... Yesterday I was looking for some JB ROMs, and I found a tutorial on "How to upgrade the Vibrant T959 to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean via Helly Bean custom ROM" and it says it requires the GB bootloader (can I flash Helly Bean without it?). Then I went to CyanogenMod and the latest stable releases are CM7; for CM10 there are only nightly builds. I found a tutorial on how to install CM10 and it doesn't mention anything about the GB bootloader.
I was tempted to flash Helly Bean but the bootloader requirement confuses me. I don't know if I should keep looking for other ROMs, ignore the bootloader thing :silly: or settle with CM10.
Thank you for your patience!
As far as I know its not necessarily a requirement anymore, but maybe someone will post more detailed info for you. My buddy Samsgun357 has been on about every build of these JB ROMs you can think of, and has never flash GB bootloader.
On the other hand, I've been flashing around in the JB world, and I flash GB bootloader long ago. It's pretty painless and you only need to do it once. After you have GB bootloader its backward compatible, and so far forward compatible.
It takes about 30 seconds to actually Odin flash and its over. As long as you follow the guide to the letter, and you have a solid connection with Odin, you'll be fine.

There's a link to the correct thread, if you end up choosing to flash GB bootloader.

I appreciate all the help you have given me... I wish I could say I'm enjoying my new ROM, but something went wrong (probably I messed up) and now my phone is done. It won't get past the "Vibrant" screen, it won't boot into recovery and to make matters worse, the computer won't recognize the device. Now I have to read threads about bricked phones
Did you flash new bootloader? If you did, you may be unaware that the button combo for download mode, and recovery mode has changed.
Your phone is more than likely not "done".
Try pulling battery and micro SD and sim all out, and now depending on which bootloader you have, hold your button and pop battery in, and plug USB cable in. One fluid swift motion.
We'll get ya straightened out

I didn't flash a new bootloader.
I could get the phone on Download Mode. I opened Odin and loaded the pit & tar files in order to get to stock JFD. COM is on and after hitting Start the first cell says "set partition" but the progress bar is empty. Is not doing anything now but I don't know if its safe to unplug and do it again or try to open Recovery and restore my Nandroid backup instead
Please bear with me

Nevermind... I'm back to stock with Odin. I'll keep on trying until I get it
Thank you for your help!

[Q] Rooting/Kernel/Rom Recommendations

Hi guys.
First up hello. Im a refuge from the Ace section, have a Galaxy SII due for delivery over the next couple of days so Im moving over. On the Ace I flitted between CM7, CM10 unofficial, Lewa and a few others.
Im generally used to rooting via stock recovery and then using CWM to do everthing else, not familiar at all with ODIN as I have never needed to use it. Standard UK SII, unlocked running Gingerbread.
Have read around this section and will continue to do so for a few days, but a few starting pointers would be nice.
Rooting/CWM/Kernels
Whats the easiest way for rooting the SII, preferably from stock recovery
Whats the easiest way for installing CWM?
What the best basic Kernel out there, or Kernel that will do an AIO Root/CWM/Kernel job?
Im reading a lot about this hardbrick lark with ICS, is this purely an issue with stock ICS roms, and its fine to go down the CM10 route?
I can use the search feature, but as Im sure you know thats not always the most productive route.. Although I shall use it in the meantime.
Cheers.
You can learn a lot just by reading peoples problems, and the answers given.
For rooting, you would normally just flash like a siyahv4+ kernel with Odin.
That gives you root, cwm and safe from brickbug.
Theres several other ways also like exynos or doing stuff via recovery.

How have i avoided ODIN so long.. hmm, Siyah 4.
Do you know how cumbersome the search feature is here, finally found the download for v4.1.15 (and then realised it was in your signature), now im trying to find the instruction to install via ODIN,. If you happen to know offhand, the exact thread that would be appreciated.
Regarding roms, Im assuming CM10 is the standard, not familiar with any of the devs over on this side of the fence.
Ok, from what I can gather
Download Keis and make sure all drivers for the SII installed
Download Siyah-s2-v4.1.5
Disconnect your phone from your computer
Start ODIN
Click the PDA button, and select Siyah-s2-v4.1.5
Put phone in download mode
Connect the phone to computer
Make sure repartition is not checked
Click the start button
Wait for the phone to reboot
correct???
(sorry, i suffer anxiety, one of the side effects is double checking anything before doing it)
If your on ICS, you can download that siyah kernel, but make sure you get the .zip type.
Get the 1st and 3rd file in the ics rooting guide in my sig.
Stick them all on sd card.
Boot into recovery.
Flash the 1st file-which is temp cwm
Flash the 3rd file-which is su/busybox
Then flash the siyah file-which gives you permanent cwm and safe kernel.
Then reboot phone.
Then you are rooted, with cwm and safe kernel.
The easier way is obviously using odin.
Ps.hope you aint got the g model.

No, its not the G..
It is on gingerbread currently though, not ICS.
GB ffs......lol.
Right you can update to ICS (pain)
or
Set up Odin and flash siyah s2 v2.6.14.tar file
or
Try exynos abuse (may not work on GB).

I shall go S2 v2 route then. assumedly i can then just flash cm10 iwthout any problems.
Yes GB model, but no, not GT-I9100G
Youll need to check what the install instructions are for the rom
Eg if you need to be on GB or ICS.
Ive never used it, Ive just read you need cwm though.
If possible I would first update to ICS via Kies or OTA then afterwards flash Siyah v4 via ODIN. Once you have done this you are ready to reboot into cwm and flash away. Remember to wipe data/factory reset in CWM though after flashing Siyah kernel and before flashing new rom.

Ah, ive been reading on problems with ics and hardbrick, i guess that is prevented by flashing siyah post update.
Thanks guys, sorry for the noob questions, im not a noob, but rooting always makes me nervous (a hangover from the days when flashing the bios on the pc was a dangerous hit and miss affair), i just like to double check.
Once im rooted and got CWM im back in familiar territory.
Any other general tips on making the leap from Ace to SII appreciated.
Dont you just love it, when the phone arrives and its pre rooted with siyah and cwm
