[Q] How to Unlock & Backup Bootloader for Samsung Vibrant? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I upgraded my Samsung Vibrant to Froyo 2.2 with Samsung Kies Mini several months ago. I reverted to Eclair 2.1 with Odin in order to install ClockworkMod Recovery and unlock my phone. Now my phone is unlocked, rooted and with ClockworkMod Recovery installed.
1. I want to flash custom ROMs based on either Gingerbread or ICS. I tried to unlock my bootloader by following the instructions on addictivetips.com (when I typed "fastboot oem unlock" it only reboots the phone). Why is it not asking me if I want to unlock the bootloader?
2. I did a Nandroid Backup and I wonder if I need to backup the boot partition anyway. If so, is it OK to do it with RomDump?
3. Since I reverted to Eclair 2.1, does that mean I have an Eclair bootloader? Or do I still have the Froyo bootloader? Will Gingerbread bootloaders work on ICS based ROMs?
Last... Could you please recommend ROMs to flash with Odin? The one I found on CyanogenMod comes with problems when dialing 911
Thank you for your patience!

Your rooted, and you have CWM. Your making it more difficult that need be.
Flash the ROM in CWM, with install zip from SD. Follow flashing instructions in the OP of the ROM.
There are custom GB bootloaders, I have them, but some people don't use them.

Hello again... Yesterday I was looking for some JB ROMs, and I found a tutorial on "How to upgrade the Vibrant T959 to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean via Helly Bean custom ROM" and it says it requires the GB bootloader (can I flash Helly Bean without it?). Then I went to CyanogenMod and the latest stable releases are CM7; for CM10 there are only nightly builds. I found a tutorial on how to install CM10 and it doesn't mention anything about the GB bootloader.
I was tempted to flash Helly Bean but the bootloader requirement confuses me. I don't know if I should keep looking for other ROMs, ignore the bootloader thing :silly: or settle with CM10.
Thank you for your patience!

As far as I know its not necessarily a requirement anymore, but maybe someone will post more detailed info for you. My buddy Samsgun357 has been on about every build of these JB ROMs you can think of, and has never flash GB bootloader.
On the other hand, I've been flashing around in the JB world, and I flash GB bootloader long ago. It's pretty painless and you only need to do it once. After you have GB bootloader its backward compatible, and so far forward compatible.
It takes about 30 seconds to actually Odin flash and its over. As long as you follow the guide to the letter, and you have a solid connection with Odin, you'll be fine.

There's a link to the correct thread, if you end up choosing to flash GB bootloader.

I appreciate all the help you have given me... I wish I could say I'm enjoying my new ROM, but something went wrong (probably I messed up) and now my phone is done. It won't get past the "Vibrant" screen, it won't boot into recovery and to make matters worse, the computer won't recognize the device. Now I have to read threads about bricked phones

Did you flash new bootloader? If you did, you may be unaware that the button combo for download mode, and recovery mode has changed.
Your phone is more than likely not "done".
Try pulling battery and micro SD and sim all out, and now depending on which bootloader you have, hold your button and pop battery in, and plug USB cable in. One fluid swift motion.
We'll get ya straightened out

I didn't flash a new bootloader.
I could get the phone on Download Mode. I opened Odin and loaded the pit & tar files in order to get to stock JFD. COM is on and after hitting Start the first cell says "set partition" but the progress bar is empty. Is not doing anything now but I don't know if its safe to unplug and do it again or try to open Recovery and restore my Nandroid backup instead
Please bear with me

[Q] Odin GB bootloader question

So before I blow up my phone, I'd like to know if I have the steps right since I've never used odin:
(Phone info: currently running Bionix net-gen 2.2 rom)
1.I downloaded the file "Vibrant_GB.tar.md5"
2.downloaded odin
3.put the phone in download mode
4.open odin and plug in the phone
5.Com 3 shows up in ID:Com box
6.click bootloader box and look for and select the "Vibrant_GB.tar.md5" file
7.check the box next to bootloader
8.hit start
9.wait for phone to explode??? or success???
Uncheck every other box except maybe ReBoot. You should be fine..just make sure you have sufficient battery on your pc, don't unplug the usb in the middle of flash or you will get problems.
cool! I don't have to wait till the phone is fully charged like a rom right? That is my next step too. I'll be trying out my first gingerbread rom. I'll try and not set it on fire
Well, just make sure that it won't turn off on you. Good luck.
Nice! just grew a pair and flashed the GB bootloader. Took all of 7 seconds! I will now read up on flashing instructions on a GB rom.
So apparently I don't need Odin to flash some of these gingerbread roms? It looks like I can just flash using the same method I've been using to flash 2.2 roms. There's nothing else I need to do to the phone in preparation? Like disabling Voodoo?
By this time, you've probably figured it out, but I'll post it anyway just in case you haven't.
It really depends on the ROM. It should say on the op if you have to disable voodoo and stuff.
I'm trying to flash "revolution rom 2.0 and it says nothing about voodoo. It does say however that I have to be on a gingerbread rom to flash this but I don't know how I'm gonna get on a gingerbread rom otherwise.
You can flash Asgard over @ EDT's official site...smooth and another choice for you.
never heard of this. is Birgertime and EDT out of XDA now like team whiskey?
I don't think so. It's just an EDT exclusive ROM I suppose.
I suppose I'll check that out as well. Thanks man.

Backing up bootloader or restore?

Hey guys
I'm thinking about doing CM9 soon and I'm pretty sure I have the procedure down.
1) Another user informed me that the CM9 "Resurrection" edition contains an ICS bootloader, correct?
2) Is this a better bootloader than the old one? If so, why?
3) Would it be advantageous to just keep the ICS bootloader contained within when switching from ROM to ROM?
4) Let's say I was going to go CM9 and then wanted to return to 100% stock, would I need to flash the original bootloader or will keeping the ICS bootloader do anything?
5) Is the only difference between bootloaders the lack of usable jig in the newer ICS bootloader?
Thanks,
Elliott
1: you don't have to worry about that. Leave the boot loader alone.
2: if the ROM changes it let the ROM worry about it.
3: when you flash stock ROM you get boot loader too with that ROM.
4: only old GB boot loader works with jig. Even the new GB boot loaders don't work with jig.
5: I have used cm9 with GB and new ICS boot loader, works fine.
6: good thing with ICS boot loader is you can use triangle away.
Answers not according to your count.

dont mess wiv bootloader files ,pit file,re partition if u don kno,ive said this to many here......jus flash ,if u wana revert use odin an flash thts all jus lov ur phone an all is good .........cheeeeeer
Bleh...so this is what I'm doing:
Installed CFRoot for my phone, backed everything up with CWM and transferred it to my PC. I'm now in the process of trying to flash CM9 to my phone and Odin is stuck at data.img...what should I do?
EDIT: In the end I turned off the phone and plugged in my USB cable to a different one on my computer and tried again...I finally got the Pass!
Anyway, I realized after that I totally forgot to make a backup of my SMS messages and a bunch of other stuff...
I did, however, copy all the files over from my phone onto my computer before installing CM9, and I also did a full backup with CWM. Is there any way to get my conversations back from either of those?
Also, how do I make it stop adding an icon on the home screen every time I download something?

upgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.3 but things turned ugly (Updated)

hi guys
I recently bought a 2nd hand Vibrant for a really good price.
As far as i see the Vibrant is already rooted with 2.2.1 Lidroid, and CWM installed.
The battery usage is amazing with this rom, but I still fancy to install some custom GB roms.
I have some questions:
1. I would like to check if I am already on GB bootloader, please guide me to check?
2. If I am not on GB bootloader, I know I must first install it.
I wonder if Vibrant has some stock GB firmwares like captivate does? The stock camera is a must for my case ><
Am i correct if I follow this method from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156832
3.Or actually I can simply flash any custom GB roms directly from where I am (Lidorid 2)
THX
Okay you know if you're not gb bootloaders when you turn on ur phone there's weird rainbow lines
If not then you are
And if you are then yea you can flash any rom
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Let me confirm if you suggesting me to flash the GB roms?
If there's rainbows > froyo bootloader
if nothing > GB bootloader
So can i say actually Gb roms doesnt really need GB bootloader
as long as I am fine with the rainbows?
THX

I've run CM7, and CM9 (ICS) on Froyo boot loaders. For me it just makes the kernel screen flash and show again, then goes on to ROM booting. I'm running a Froyo boot loader right now.
Is lidroid a t959 rom or a t959v?
You need to have a t959 to be in the vibrant 3g section, otherwise you'll probably want the galaxy s 4g section.
Sent from my Sensation using Tapatalk 2
there is a Lidroid version for T959 - I have a Odin flash with it. I use it instead of JFD.
Want to know if you have the GB boot loaders? Easy -
Hold the Volume up button and the power button at the same time. If it goes to download mode....you got the GB bootloaders.
T959 Vibrant does not have Samsung 2.3 support. Samsung forgot about us after Froyo. There Froyo OTA upgrade bricked so many phones that they wont chance it again.
For 2.3 Gingerbread you will have to download a I9000 port found in our Development section. That said the ICS packages are very nice for Vibs too.
need help guys
A few hours ago, I was at work and bored.
I started to flash some GB roms without coming back to check this post.
The rom i used was phiremod-fusion-2.1.1.
As usual I nandroid my lidroid before doing anything.
Then I 3 wipes and flash the phiremod rom.
first time the flash was really quick and also rebooted itself.
But only this time I realise I have a newer CWM 5.xx version instead of my 2.xx version (Lidroid)
Ok, i wasn't panic, because i read some where before. It's prefectly fine for a cm7 if the first time it bootloop.
Then I pull battery, and boot into recovery again, to flash the 2nd time.
this time BAAM, prefect. I found myself with a 2.3.x cm7 mod rom.
but as soon as I found the camera apk is actually the MIUI one. I decided to nandroid back to Lidorid.
things turns ugly at this point, when i back to CWM i restored.
But only found some errors CWM said , but I remember CWM did say something like erasing boot.img before restoring.
After the resotre failed, I accidentally reboot my phone.
And now my vibrant only stuck at the typical black boot screen "Vibrant in the middle with samsung at the bottom.
I tried to boot back to recovery, but no luck.
right now I am telling myself i probably need to restore to stock.
Can my fellow xda members guide me the proper way to
1. boot CWM
2. download mode
Given the fact that I am not too sure about which bootloader I am on.
THX people!!
Yup, you'll need to go back to stock. There are plenty of write-ups on how to do it.
Also, NEVER restore a 2.2 backup after you install 2.3 or higher. The file systems and partitions are different. Odin back to stock, install lidroid again, and then try to restore your backup.

[SOLVED]Cannot install ICS ROM--please HELP

hi,
I am sorry if this is a dumb question. But i have failed several attempts while shifting to ICS (RC 5 by team-nyx). Every time when i install ROM & kernel via CWM and boot the device (vibrant t959) it freezes on the screen with VIBRANT and SAMSUNG displaying WHITE on BLACK back ground.
i have gone back to JFD and tried several times BUT same result.
I was on froyo 2.2 (build UVKB5) updated via kies and did it but no luck. I followed wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Vibrant:_Full_Update_Guide and did starting from No. 03 --
downloaded Cmenard's Kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5
Heimdall Suite 1.3.2 for windows
AND upto No. 9 under Windows ONLY: section
the CWM installs as it says (A blue transfer bar will appear on the phone showing the kernel being transferred. The device will reboot automatically. )
after that i cleared factory, cache and dalvik cache.
then I select install Zip from SD card and chose the ROM (which is from team-nyx.com/index.php/releases).
after 3% it says rebooting and vibrant shuts down and reboots.. when after I clicked the combo (vol+vol-power) to enter the CWM its not there.. so I reinstall using [heimdall flash --kernel zImage] command in PC's cmd. then after i redid the same to select from SD and then ROM installed ok.
then I selected the kerenel which was taken by same source and installation went normal..
after I select reboot from CWM it reboots and hangs on vibrant screen.
I cannot figure OUT WHAT IM doing WRONG..
Please HELP ME..!!!
thank you for your time
I am moving to 2.2 via kies after going back to stock JFD. then i will root my vibrant. after that i will install ROM manager from market. THEN i will try to FLASH to ICS RC 5 + kernel from nyx TEAM.
I dont know what is wrong.. please HELP
From what you told us it sounds right. Have you tried a different ICS rom? Give ICS slim a try. When you Odin back did you checked re-partition?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk 2
You should try flashing the Gingerbread bootloaders using Odin after you flash back to stock. Those bootloaders can run a Froyo ROM as well as ICS so it wouldn't hurt to do either way. After you flash the bootloader then try flashing the ROM.
And try a different ROM like iwillkillyou suggested. Slim is good, but ICZen is very solid if you're tipping your toes into ICS.

Just so that you know, everytime you are using Kies, you are running the risk of hardbricking your device. It is notorius for that and in fact someone last week got HBricked with it.
I don't use ROM Manager and probably won't as long as I have a Vibrant. All you need to do is go back to JFD and pull the CWR from my signature and put it on your internal_sd and label it as Update.zip. Then boot into recovery and hit Reinstall PAckages (might have to do this twice) and your stock recovery (blue) will go to CWR (green) and you can flash away.
Also for more detailed instructions, se my ICS install giude also in my signature.

No stupid questions. That is why we are here. I am pretty sure there is a flashable 2.2 stock floating aroung here. I personally don't have it though. Custom 2.2's are at this point tweaked so completely out, that they will blow the doors off any 2.2 stock ROM out there. I usggest Moped_Ryder's ROMs and Fishman's Bionix-redux ROMs. Quality, fast and stable. Not ICS, but everything works and no fear of the dreaded Encryption Bug.
PM incoming btw.

thank you. btw can we Flash to 2.2 via CWM .. directly selecting the ROM from SD .. without Odin
If you can find it, you should be able to. Just put on your card and flash away, taking care to wipe accordingly.
A note on flow though:
2.1, 2.2 -can go into and out of any 2.2 there is laterally.
2.3-4.0 -will need to Odin to stock before going back to a 2.2 ROM. Can move laterally from 4.0 to 4.0 though.
(i.e DO NOT try to restore a 2.2 nandroid or flash a 2.2 ROM when you are on an ICS variant. the /system is completely changed and reformatted. You need to Odin to get it back.)
Moped Ryder uploaded a semi tweaked version of the stock 2.2 build. It's a zip that you can just flash using CWR:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674519
It comes rooted with busybox and some other goodies, but it's the stock kernel and whatnot. I'd highly recommend Fishman's Bionix-V Mod or Moped Ryder's Slim_Ryder ROMs if you're going to be on Froyo though. They're both great, but I went with Fishman's latest Bionix Mod since I couldn't get bluetooth to work on Moped Ryder's ROM. Which is really unfortunate because I loved Moped Ryder's otherwise.
And you don't have to Odin back to stock if you're just bouncing around Froyo or Eclair builds; only if you're coming from Gingerbread or ICS (2.3 or 4.0).
Keep us updated. I'm curious to see what worked. It's probably the gingerbread loaders. But, who knows.

Now I am at the very beginning again. I am now on 2.1 JFD. I dont know WHY this happening to me .. :crying:
gonna try again with GB bootloaders.. BUT Im sick of failing and going back to 2.1 (my friends who are having captivate had no problem)

At the time i was trying it was NOT rooted.. But now i have it rooted because i needed to unlock the network . which happened me for the very first time after flashing back to JFD using Odin..
Thank you guys for the links and thoughts on 2.2 ROMs.. I am not that expert . Thats why i was updating to 2.2 via KIES -- which is not a good idea as it seems with the ability 2 brick the device. I am going to get Bionix-V FishmanMod V4 FULL and install as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441976 says..
It says Boot into clockwork recovery and i think i found something to do that in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734164
I have to get ROM manager from market and go through it..
BUT Im damn upset with the RC5 ICS update by nyx being unable to installed into my device.. I will try with GB bootloaders flashed ..
If you are going to go with Fish's ROM, then all you need to do is Odin back to JFD and pull the CWR from my signature and put it on your internal_sd and label it as Update.zip. Then boot into recovery and hit Reinstall Packages (might have to do this twice) and your stock recovery (blue) will go to CWR (green) and you can flash away.
Fish also has a Odin package that you can flash his ROM through Odin and not have to deal with CWR.
ROM Manager is no longer supporting 2.1, so if you do go back to JFD, then it will be hard to get RM. It is out there somewhere but really all you need is the Update.zip from above to do it. I suggest that you stay on Fish's ROM for awhile and read about ICS installs and all the little things that are involved. If you do flash Fish's ROM, you don't need to mess with the bootloaders.
Btw, aside from Kies, messing with Bootloaders is one of the sure fire ways to hardbrick your device. It only takes seconds to flash them, but do it wrong and, well you know.
Good luck and ask if you have any.

BTW may i ask you after moving to Fish's ROM and later if i need to move to ICS still can I do it without messing with Bootloaders..
Thank you
That is what we are here for in the Q&A/General sections.
Regaring your question about Gingerbread bootloaders being needed:::Yes and No.
Gingerbread bootloaders were required in the infancy of ICS ROMs bc they prevented what is called "Rainbows" in your clockwork where you couldn't see anything. The options were there but you just couldn't see them. Then as ICS evolved, the need for GB bl's lessened and now you don't need them at all.
But...There's always a but...Gingerbread bl's are recommended by most of the devs for ICS builds because they seem to work better with the custom recoveries that come with some of the kernels. There is more to it but in short, GB bl's are not required but recommended.
If you go to my ICS install guide, in the middle pages and more again at the end, Yosup (highly respected user) and I have a detailed conversation about bootloaders and their installation. Once he got over the fear and did it, he was hooked and flashing ICS ROMs weekly if not more. It is a very informative section of that thread.

[Q] keep getting stuck on Vibrant start screen after flashing GB bootloaders

Admittedly - it's been a while since I have bothered with an ICS/JB ROM due to broken GPS, but it seems that more people are having luck with their GPS, and since I have done the hardware fix and get amazing locks in Froyo, thought I might update to JB.
I can't seem to figure this out.
Phone rooted.
I'm running fishman's axura froyo 2.2 ROM.
I put phone into download mode and start odin.
Choose the standard 512 pit file and the GB bootloader tar.
Flash completes successfully and phone reboots.
Then just sits on the Vibrant start screen.
I then have to get my phone out of soft brick by using fishman's bionix odin flashable tar file ROM.
I've tried checking the "Phone Bootloader Update" box in Odin, but this makes no difference - still get's stuck on the Vibrant start screen.
Any ideas?
Thinking of giving one of the new JB ROM's a try (Hellybean), but need the GB bootloaders installed successfully before I do this.
Thanks.
Hi,
I assumed that you fulfill complete ODIN steps for stock, but perhaps you missed something, check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
Also i suggest, after you in stock and get proper CWM for rooting, flash one 2.3.x GB rom first, and then you could flash GB bootloader.
Or you may not need GB bootloader i guess if you want to go JB ROM, just flash GB rom first or ICS then you go to JB rom.
You may try also Heimdall steps.
Hope it helps
Yo bro, reason why you have issues is because you also odined the 512 pit file. You're not supposed to use the pit file. Just the .tar bootloader. Place that in PDA.
"1. Enter Download mode on your phone.
2. Open ODIN on your computer.
3. Plug in USB and check if ODIN recognizes the phone.
4. Remove all ticks from ODIN, except PDA.
5. Select PDA and browse to the bootloader TAR package file you wish to flash.
6. Click on Flash.
7. If ODIN says PASS, long press power for 10 seconds and it'll reboot, else, repeat 2-6 again... "
^Thats from the thread about bootloaders, not mine.
Heres the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117990
Hobbesfed is correct but most ics and jb ROMS don't require gb bootloaders anymore. Just be careful flashing bootloaders, if something goes wrong you will hard brick your phone. I do recommend gb bootloaders but it is somewhat of a risk to your phone. Good luck

Yes, this is the thread I used.
I think the problem was that I used the 512 pit file, which I'm thinking re-partitioned stuff and caused the issue.
I noticed that after the flash was showing "PASS" that the phone automatically booted itself, again probably because of using the 512 pit file.
I noticed another poster said that you don't need GB bootloaders anymore? So does that mean I can flash say "Hellybean" straight from a rooted Froyo 2.2 phone? Seems (at least by the massive size (almost 400MB) that Hellybean 'All-in-one' includes kernel/gapps etc. Although the Hellybean OP still says that Gapps need to be flashed, I'm assuming this is in error perhaps from previous builds? Almost 400MB for a ROM is gargantuan so I'd expect gapps and the kitchen sink to be in there!
Not using GB bootloaders sounds sketchy to me, event he Hellybean thread seems to indicate that you need them, or at least be on CM9 to flash, but would love to know if it's possible as I've had historical issues flashing GB bootloaders.....thanks.

For Hellybean, Im pretty sure you still need to flash Gapps. You might not need to anymore, but before when I flashed Hellybean without flashing Gapps, I was missing Gapps. If I were you, I would flash Gapps anyway. Also, the ROM is 400 mb in size because it includes the ROM for Captivate, SGS1, Vibrant, etc. Anyway, according to Toast6977 : "I guess from what I've been reading, GB bootloaders are optional. If you decide to go ahead and flash it then follow the guide and you'll be fine. It takes around 10 seconds to flash." I myself have GB bootloaders and its really not a big deal to flash them. Just dont use the PIT file. Anyway, just follow the instructions from the ROM and you should be okay. I would probably go to ICS before JB but ICS has the EU bug. Which is why I go to GB first, but then you'll need GB bootloaders.

Dude..... FACEPALM. You already are past GB. If you arent trying to get on GB, you dont need any GB Bootloaders. Besides, thats why they call them "GB Bootloaders." Also, you're on JB or ICS already. Why would you flash a GB bootloader?... PA is either ICS or JB.... So to answer your question, yes you can flash Hellybean without the bootloader....
