[Q] I Purchased: HTC Evo 4G LTE - OH YEA - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hello my fellow XDA Community!
Over the weekend I made a great Purchase to the HTC Evo 4G LTE for Sprint!
Very excited for this phone.. Killer Phone!
Is there any tricks I should know about?
What would be the benefits of ROOTing this phone?
I'm digging the LED light, I tried to download a App from the PLAY Store to modify the colors. But no Luck..
Can anyone direct me towards Goodness!
I have a lot to learn, but I can get around quite easy when it comes to customizing, "Jail-Breaking" <<< & yes I know Jail-breaking is not the term for Android. :highfive:
Any Links would be Appreciated!
Thanks, DreamMaker

Welcome! Love mine as well. When you get some time, read over this guide...it has everything you could possibly need to know about rooting as it pertains to the evo lte (and some good info about android in general).

In the car
I have NEVER purchased a phone and not rooted it, in fact, if there was a way to root one in the car on the drive home from Sprint I would.
Do you want to root....HELL YES
THat way you can flash Rom's, themes. skins etc.
There is a turn key root out there from a member, his name is regaw, just google it and it will take you to the XDApage where you will find instructions for the root process, you only have to download a couple things and run the program.
You will love this phone.

A little Ironic... scared of unlocking phones because people might brick them?

After patiently awaiting s-off so that I can install custom roms, splash screens boot animations etc. I find it ironic that HTC doesn't, in part, want the bootloader unlocked so that people won't screw up their phones. In the mean time, our ADD minds have gone the safe route by...
Pulling out T5 torque wrenches to disassemble our phones to change home key color
Tearing the phone apart to repaint it
Playing with QPST which is not a toy at all (talk about f-ing your phone up) to remove the Sprint banner or change the volume
Using PC's to rip out your MSL key to change Wimax or 3G settings (which is much easier to do now thanks to XDA)
Back to QPST... Changing the PRL if we don't like the new one.
Re-rooting 40x when ad free fails (and it does work just glitchy)
Don't get me wrong, all of these ideas are awesome and I have done all except the physical assault on my 3VO... If s-off isn't here soon, Radio Shack here I come! I need all the wrenches and tape and paint you got.

At this point I don't think anyone cares anymore who is taking their phone back because there's no s-off or some random minor imperfection, and then starting a thread about it explaining why.
Ok, I can see how the post would read the way you took it. My point was more that the xda community is innovative, creative and curious. And when handcuffed by a bootloader, we find other avenues to fill the void. I think its cool as hell. Like kids trapped inside on a rainy day without their xbox. It wasnt a hurry up s-off rant. But it was an observation that some of this stuff is a lot more dangerous than flashing

But for real IPHONE 5 ON SPRINT FTW (hondacop voice)
Ill run the s-off when there's a worthy ROM I can flash. I might wait a week to see what the feedback is before I take the plunge.

For the love of all that is HOLY... I am not returning my phone!!! Where did I ever say that??? I learned how to do many things because of the locked bootloader. QPST etc. Things I never would have learned if I was constantly flashing new roms, keyboards changing boot animations... I'm not asking for a hurry up to s-off, I will wait as long as it takes. All I trying to point out, and failing miserabley, in our spare time some of us are doing things to our phones that can screw them up way more than flashing and copy pasting in system/customize/resource. I haven't bricked my phone once and am enjoying playing with the new ideas and programs I never knew were out there. ****, if I was going to cry about phone returns and alpharev crap I'd go to facebook

Well this junk goes back tuesday.I have a free photon coming on tuesday from sprint to test and keep and after that i get a real phone the SGS2.
this whole ordeal has turned me off.First it was HTC and all the posting asking when when when and then we get a youtube video of S-OFF but since it has been dead.
This phone is nothing special. The screen looks just like the evo if you hold them side by side.Ill be glad to send it back and wait for a real phone.

I ment a week after freedom (or whatever its called) drops just to see the feedback just in case there was some unanticipated problems.

sad koz is sad. no s-off?!

well i finnaly got sick of being throttled by t-mobile. so i decided to go out and buy myself an evo 3d. seeing as how it was the same thing as my htc sensation for the most part. got it home, come to find out some stupid update that i didnt even do prevent me from using the revolutionary method to get s-off. soo i went to the htc site and found out how to unlock the bootloader. after about 2 hours of bull ****ting. and like 3 hours of just downloads (thanks to t mobile for throttled data) i got that. but s is still not off. wtf mates?! if there is any way to get s-off like i had on my sensation let me know please!!
thanks, and hope to make friends with the evo 3d peps like i did the sensation, and vibrant peps!
koz
Sorry, man.
You won't be able to get S-off after using the HTC ethod BUT!, big BUT! :
You can still accomplish everything you'd want to, root-wise.
There are workarounds for everything, that work.
So you'll still be able to Flash a custom Rom, a kernel, a Radio, with full root...
You just have to do a couple of more simple steps and use the bootloader for a couple things. There are threads in the Dev section that can walk you through it. (edit: like this one, lol:http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...Recovery + Root + Flash Ur Ass Off! [9.11.11]
So basically the S-on you see isn't really that "on" as you might've initially thought.
That's a good thing, man.
LIKES:
drinking water, smoking flower, and avoiding the giant.
yeah.
I'd rather not use the htc method at all. I liked the ability to just flash custom roms or kernels from my phone and not have to be attached to the computer.
HTCs method allows things to be done. Its just not a great way of doing it.
I'm hoping that alpharevx and unrevoked are continuing to work on updates to the revolutionary tool they released earlier this year.
yea true that. im tempted to do an insurance claim on it. just get a new one and start over
how would you go about doing an insurance claim?
I had mine replaced in store last week, ended up with 1.5
enjoy the wait..

I don't understand why people can't just wait on root. Maybe I never used root to its full potential but jeez, it ain't something we can't be without. Root Will come for ur version of hboot just like it did for all of us.
Not a personal attack on u op it is just a general opinion of mine. I waited with no problems from launch day to get root. Then two-three weeks after teamwin came out just to watch for bugs. It's nice to have all the customized roms and all but really what does it do for u other than free tether.

You clearly have absolutely no idea on the capabilities of a rooted phone. Don't fill this guys head with your misguided opinion.
I personally feel they will release and updated version of Revolutionary . The only reason I say this is mainly due to two factors . One I have seen numerous posts regarding the HTC method not working all the time and having to RUU the phone back just for the damn thing will work . Second more and more phones are now showing up with 1.50 Hboot on them . 1.30 and 1.40 is now quickly becoming a thing of the past . Just like with unrevoked an eventual exploit will be found and hopefully Revolutionary will update accordingly . Hopefully .

The real payoff is when a new version of android is released! And you get to use it for months before unrooted people!
I love root access to death and thoroughly enjoy tweaking my phone. But from launch day to when revolutionary hit I was forced to be stock. This was the first phone that I've had/used that was absolutely fine stock. It's fast, smooth, kick ass battery and everything worked great(GPS etc).

Save your insurance claim. Everything will work out, as long as you can be patient. It's $100 incentive, basically, if you have Sprint's insurance.

THIS.
I can't wait for this device. Preemptive thanks to all the devs working on this one.
So I have some questions:
1) Does S-on with an unlocked boot loader through HTCDev allow for CM9 and other AOSP ROMs?
2) Does the Kernel source releases on other One X phones include the code for the ImageSense chip? This will be tied into how well the camera performs under CM9, etc.
Thanks!
Dev for the Evo line are the best. I've had the OG Evo, the 3d and now the Evo lte. And this is good news.

I don't see how they'd have any time to fix this before shipping next Wednesday. Plus, how will they know? They better not be so out to get us that they surf the internet forums looking for people who have found ways around their system. And even if they did, would they be able to find out HOW they exploited it? I'm asking hypothetically, because I don't know these answers. But my thinking is that there is way too little time and ability to change anything now. Maybe on the next wave of phones, sure. But our 001 hardware will be exploited mightily it would seem!

Yup they have the s-off but are not releasing it I'm thinking it's because of the EvoLTE they want it to be release so they'll release it for both phoones so they both have the s-off before they get patch. Im thinking is the same method since they have the same s4chip.

If you're only looking for functionality (not root, etc..) then Reset to Factory Settings. It does help a LOT. Don't forget to backup!
I have the same issue with crappy battery life after the fota ics update. Ove not needed to root my e3d before ics. I could uninstall block buster, spider man, etc... Now since the update, battery life is horrible. I've had to go back to old school methods, like installing juice defender, advanced task manager, and a CPU monitor to see what's eating the resources. My phone gets hot now just sitting idle.
Gee, thanks sprint for finally getting ics out. Even though its full of bugs, and ics is no longer the current version of android, but thanks. (can you hear the sarcasm?)

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Also what's the difference in the a nexus is vs the dna. Also is there anything I should know or do when I receive my new device. Thanks for the help

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:

Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

Read the threads.
No HTCdev, no unlock of bootloader of any kind currently.
Oh okay so I read that wrong. So we can't even downgrade to a previous version or that requires root and an unlocked bootloader. Also if my device is on 2.x no root goodness for me huh?

No. You are stuck stock just like I am until someone figures it out. If they figure it out. Or you could pay the 45.00 for the JTAG s-off.

Ugh, I might just have to do it. My wife thinks I'm retarded, but what does SHE know being she doesn't have the staff of logic and intelligence.

Women can justify buying the same damn shoes and clothes in different shades of the same color, getsing jtagged should not be questioned.
And then oddly enough they complain when they see another in the same dress. Exclaiming how she stole her idea. Not even thinking she just might have the same taste in clothes but oh no that "B**** better get out that dress 'cause I wore it first"

You said what most of us think when we ponder a purchase that has to be approved by the gatekeeper/wife.
haha no comments on the women stuff i think you understand why hahaha
Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

I don't know what it is with me but I'm honestly tired of using CM and AOSP for awhile. I've been enjoying Viper so that I can still get a breath of fresh air from Sense... even though most don't appreciate Sense. Honestly wish I could put a Sense variant on my N7 too just to change it up.

BAD DOG! *rubs your nose in it*
Yeah I know what you vanilla gets bland for awhile. I can't get past two hours screen time on my nexus. And that's with the extended battery. At least sense is adding sprinkles and chocolate syrup to vanilla. Anyways what about face palm or whatever. Anyway my device will be here Monday thinks for the info I've only had Motorola and Samsung phones so HTC is a breath of fresh air

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.
I'm pretty much decided on sending out my DNA to be JTAG'd. How long can I expect to be without a phone? I think i'll be stuck using my rezound with just google voice.
