[Q] What does the modem do? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have seen several threads in General section about flashable modems and wondered- what does the modem do?
Is it in charge of the wifi + 3G data?
Thanks a lot in advance!

not for wifi. but for the mobile data.

It's good to make a dalvik wipe all the time to change a modem or kernel ,spesial in kernel you can use (ultimate cleaning kernel).
The others who can say for modem is improves the yield of gps and the phone signal ....

It depends upon what is packed in the update file...
If you are using Odin version then yes...in CWM flashable zips most of the devs pack a modem..just ope up the zip and check inside to be sure...

Where can I find I9100TDCKF1 Modem ?

Hello ,
I bought my phone from Thailand and it came with I9100TDCKF1 modem.
After flashing Cognition 1.42, the internet speed was very bad.
I tried various of solutions but non helped.
Now I want to go back and install the original modem the phone came with, which was the only one with good internet performance : I9100TDCKF1 .
But, I couldn't find it in XDA or anywhere else.
Where can I find it ?
Thanks.
P.S - The phone is I9100T and not I9100, maybe this is the reason ?

ok, so it's the full rom...
I need only the modem itself.
Is this the official rom ?
Another thing : It named by 3 modems : I9100TDCKF4_I9100TDCKF1_I9100TTHLKF1
So which of them is actually "true" ?

It's the PDA version which we mention. KF1 is your baseband/phone and KF4 PDA, so your will be said as KF4. Press *#1234# to see it.
That is the Official ROM.
Regards.
You could have a look for MODEM thread with stock modems .

Can you post a link please ?

I dont have a link you have to look .Try the dev section for starters .
Or download full rom and extract modem yourself .
jje
Well, the rom indeed has a modem.bin in it.
The question is how should I flash this moded.bin.
I mean, it's not a tar, which I can flash with odin...
Any ideas ?

For installing only the modem, just extract the file modem.bin from the rom and flash it through odin, by selecting "Phone" instead of "PDA".

Can I change modem im my Samsung Galaxy S II I9100?

Hi!
My current phone is:
Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 which is rooted.
ROM: RootBOX 1.5
kernel: Fluxi 3.0.36
current modem: XXLPR
My question would be, can I change the modem just like a random fleshable .zip ? Do I need to perform FULL WIPE? I tried to look up in the forum but only found solutions for non-rooted phones.
Please help
Regards,
Yes. Most modems are CWM flashable. Do a Google search & append XDA to your search terms ("SGS2 CWM modems", etc...use your imagination). Here's a link to a thread that has a bunch of modems to get you started.
Edit - No wipe, clear cache or clear Dalvik required when you flash a modem. Simply boot into CWRecovery, flash the modem, reboot. Done.

yes u can flash the zip files of modem thro recovery without any issue, and no need to do full wipe, and also the modem will not wipe anything on ur phone.
after flashing a modem please see it settles down by allowing it for a cpl of days
find some flashable zip collection in link below

Thank you both for your quick replies!
Hmm now could you suggest me which one to choose? It seems there are so many of them... My main aim for this modem change is to save as much battery as possible.

They all work differently depending on your location. One that works well for someone else may not work well for you. Try each one for a while to find one that works well for you.
Eventually I have downloaded the latest XXLPR modem.
Runs pretty good.
Thanks guys!

Okay but all I9100 modems are "inter-flashable" right? Which brings me to the question, why flash another modem at all? I mean logically the stock modem is meant for my region and should be, at least theoretically, the best for my phone.
Theres nothing wrong with reviving old threads as its better than opening up new ones.
Youve just got to try out different modems and kernels and see how your phone performs with the permutations youve chosen.

Im already using the philz latest kernel. Im on rainbow v6 lsj rom.

i found solution to my problem. i flashed the latest philz kernel and followed his instruction. this option is under philz settings.
•Backup/Flash Kernel: backup kernel in time stamped boot_$date.img file. To flash kernels, they must be in one of the sdcards under clockworkmod/.kernel_bak folder. If you have zImage files, rename them to *.img file
•Backup/Flash EFS: creates/restores efs.img file under one of the sdcards in clockworkmod/.efsbackup folder
•Flash modem: you can put *.bin modem files under clockworkmod/.modem_bak folder in one of the sdcards. Note, if you recompile my recovery from source, you must verify that recovery.fstab file for your device has the /modem entry or you need to add it manually
You can also flash the modem.bin file via Mobile Odin

I flashed philz way last night with a DVLP3 modem..
Strange that it is loosing it all together... You can try to select different servers in setting to try and kick start it back up? Before re flashing modem again.
Modem works great without it being rill matched and always has... Thought I would have a look at it after reading the rill app post. Matched it using rill application and it is very much the same.

I have a very similar problem j_r17ca except when I reboot I have no baseband IMIE as well as signal edit just found out DON'T USE getril app as ics RILs aren't compatible with the jelly bean leak, just install the modems only

Coming back to this thread... this morning i rebooted the phone and on restart there was no signal and baseband was empty... Re flashed my modem through Philz with success but i did not show up in baseband... Still no signal.
So re flashed LJS rom and Philz kernal and now the XXLS6 Modem is working even better than before... VERY strange !

[Q] It's possible to change back modem?

Hi guys,
There's anyway to change back for my old modem from 4.0.3?
I was using 4.0.3 baseband version I9100UHLPF and kernel version 3.0.15-i9100VJLP7.
Now i'm using the leaked JB.
Thanks.
No.

Huh ?
OP - You can flash whatever modem you want. Doesn't matter if it was released with a GB or ICS stock rom. Obviously different modems will work well with different networks in different locations so a given modem you try may not work well/at all with your network/in your area, but there's nothing stopping you trying any modem.
If you want to go back to your previous modem, search for a CWM or Odin flashable version of it on here/with a Google search.

I'm asking this becausa i saw some people saying that the modem is related to battery drain, so i was thinking if i change back to my last modem from 4.0.3 i could get more battery duration. Am i right? It makes sense?
Thanks for the support.
I was readin about this right now read this and the page has the modems if you need them, but furst read the posts!

Sent from my GT-I9100 and press thanks if i helped you!
Yeah, sometimes changing modems might improve battery life a little/lessen drain if your phone is able to maintain a more stable/reliable connection to nearby towers (that's assuming you're getting drain because it's having problems keeping a stable connection with the modem you're using now).
You'll only know if you'll get less drain if you test it out
If you can't find a CWM or Odin flashable version of the modem anywhere, download the entire rom from somewhere, extract the modem.bin file from the rom tar/md5 & flash the modem.bin in the Phone section of Odin.

Yes and that was on ics right, the jb leaked has the modem with it that i think (correct me if im wrong) will lead to bootloop or modem not working correctly.

They are one and the same. HTC we call it radio. Samsung call it modem. Modem is what it is called in Odin so that is what they go with.
