Do I need to be rooted to flash custom roms? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I heard that alot of roms are now prerooted. I do have the bootloader unlocked on 2.3.6. Do i still need to root, or could i just flash a custom JB rom such as the ones created by Th3Bill?
thanks appreciate the help

has root preloaded.
why would you not want root access? after unlocking, flashing recovery, and installing a custom system, why would you not want root? i'm sure you have a good reason, just curious.
one post? can't tell if serious

You have the BL Unlocked, so flash a ROM and most (if not all) come with root preinstalled already...

Unlockroot is what I used to root my Atrix. It's really as easy as they say. :good:

I know this isn't directed at me, but I was asking myself the same question this user did, because I need to hide the System Bar on a JB Tablet, and from what I found it is only possible with root.

[Q] Evil Fascinate 3.5.1 comes with perm root, correct?

I would assume this ROM (EF 3.5.1) includes permanent root, since there are directions for coming from stock ED01- would this be a correct assumption? I flashed this when i already had root, so I just wanted to make sure before doing the same on my wife's non-rooted phone. Thanks in advance.

You are correct in assuming it comes rooted. As in it comes with the SuperUser permissions and application already in the ROM/System.
You are incorrect in calling it "permanent". Rooting is never permanent. You could flash another non rooted ROM and lose your root rights. How do I know? I have done it and it confused the hell out of me!
cheers!

lol, true. I guess i wasn't clear by saying permanent root. I knew you could remove root, as i have done quite often for OTA update testing, and so forth. by permanent, i just meant that root would stick if you rebooted it. Thanks for the helpful information though

I made a mistake not a big deal get over it
..just wondering why some people want to do all this custom stuff to their tablet like installing a custom recovery to flash ROMs/etc, but don't want to root the device..? Huh, I don't get it. Rooting is pretty harmless. Please no offense to the OP, I'm just curious is all. The first thing I do is give myself root access then I start thinking about what I want to do with my device

Having actually read the OP, I think his issue is that he is on .21 for which there currently IS no root procedure, and he wants to know how, in the absence of root, he can flash recovery so that (perhaps) he can install a ROM which is rooted.

I used the Asus unlock tool, then I flashed the ClockWork Recovery Official "TOUCH" recovery v5.8.1.8,
Cleaned, wiped everything, and formated...
Then installed
[ROM] [04/11/12] Primalicious 9.4.2.21 to get back on ICS .21
So playing with it now.....so to speak

[Q] Can you unroot your phone (X10 Mini) once you have flashed a rom?

Hi I was just wondering could you unroot a phone once you have flashed a rom?
Thanks
DrShellgon :fingers-crossed:
i belive you cant unless you flashed the stock one.
I wonder, if it is possible to flash a custom rom without having the phone unrooted before.
Depends on why you want to do it. You could uninstall superuser. That'd stop any app's from gaining root privileges.
And I think would actually remove the files that were added during the rooting process, although I don't know what effect that'd have on your phone.

[Q] Quesiton about the bootloader from a newbie

Hello,
I've never rooted a device before, so please forgive me should I come across stupid
I've got a Nexus 4 and had 4.2.1 installed and after playing with it, I decided to root. Which I did using Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.1, and it worked great!
Just a couple of questions, after I unlocked the bootloader to gain my root access, do I then need to lock it again?
Also, if Google release a new Android version (4.2.2, 4.3, 5.0 etc) will installing that OTA update remove my root access? And to install that update, would the bootloader need to be locked?
Thanks!

No you dont need to relock the bootloader, thats what you unlock to gain root access. If google release a new version of their OS you will be able to flash it as a custom rom from the development section of your device, so ota wouldnt be needed, and plus you cant do ota updates if your device is rooted anyway.
Hope i could be of some help

Not strickly true at least on the nexus 7 after rooting and installing cwm you can still install ota updates as cwm will reroot and prevent a new recovery being flashed as the update is installed, this is what I have done with all ota updates.
So if you have cwm and it has this feature all is good

Ah okay. I've never used the nexus devices before I'm just going on previous experience with other phones but its nice to learn something new

Thanks for your help, that is useful
If I were to flash a rom, would it erase all my data such as apps, settings, pics etc?
It will only delete apps and stuff if you do a full wipe. Most roms require a full wipe if its the first time you install it, use an app called titanium backup to backup your apps and data then just recover your apps and data after installing the new rom.

Why not unlock the boot loader there is always a Oden to complete stock with locked boot loader so u can return ice returned 2 phones with unlocked boot loaders and never had a issue even one even a MAXX HD lol and one note 2 as long add there's no root they return them. Not having your BL unlocked limits u quite a bit Its your phone just curious
I used casual, and did everything, root unlock and custom recovery

There's no way to root without Odin of root66 just like last build. Expect casual of course and as stated this is the wrong section so I went ahead and reported it for you so adev can move it. Just keep the sections in mind for future posts please.

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a root that does only that: give me root access.
Is CASUAL really the only possible way to achieve root? If so, is it necessary that it unlocks the boot-loader and installs custom recovery to achieve this?
I probably wouldn't mind except that I'd like to just be able to do OTA updates as available, which I hear is not possible after running casual, and I really don't want to fiddle with custom ROMs as the stock Note 2 one works so well for me.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions...

Odin and root66 will root your phone. If you recieve a OTA while rooted it will get rid of your root completely and you will have to re-root your phone, it also has the potential to do some wonky **** to it (ive even heard of bricks happening because of being rooted and accepting the OTA).
Once your bootloader is unlocked you wouldnt have to flash roms if you didnt want to unless you wanted to update to a new OTA.
