Hello. I'm coming from a SGSII and now feel like a total noob with my new Xperia S. I´m already updated to ICS, unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone. Then while i was rooting the phone, use the CWM to make a nandroid backup. However when i go to the clockworkmod folder there is a total new type of archive that i not used to know. Normally in my SGSII there is a lot of files, with the Xperia S i just have one file "system.ext4.tar", wich is 549 mb in size. Is that it? Is that my backup?
Thanks in advance! :good:

That is the system partition backup. You should have a data, a cache, and some others. If your CWM is 6%, there will be also a blobs folder.

The new recovery can do two types of backup..... One the. .tar (which is new) and another the old process..
I think you selected the.tar format.

I use the CWM-SuperSU-v0.92, then I proceed like others CWM, just enter in backup/restore option, then backup, and then is just a lot of NO's and one YES. It never asked me for a selection.

I have this folder \clockworkmod\backup\1970-04-23.01.20.31 (weird date by the way) and inside the folder is just one file: system.ext4.tar
I can open that file with WinRar, but inside the archive there aren't any of the folders you mentioned
Not inside it, but together with it. Flash the advanced stock kernel. It has a stock kernel with recovery (date bug fixed) and some other things.

I was just reading about that:
Advanced Stock Kernel
I'll give it a try!
Thanks mate!
Well... I try the Advanced Stock Kernel.
All fine with the instalation, my phone boot fine and the CWM looks fine too. However i still have my doubts with the backup. This time the backup is more like i used to know with my SGSII but the files are realy tiny. There are 6 files in total and the file boot.img is the bigger one, it has just 20 Mb. So in total my backup has 6 files with a total amount of 20,4 MB... it's that normal???
By the way, the wierd date is still there.
Edit: I almost forgot something, there is a new folder inside the \clockworkmod, the new one is \blobs, wich has a lots of folders inside. Should i kept safe this new folder?
Yeah. Also, download ROM manager to manage the backups.
"I got my values. So you can keep yours, OK?"
yeah the backup is somewhat small but no worries, all your files are in there. dont you like it less mb on backup, but when you restore it comes back to a big file .
What about the \blobs folder. Anyone know what it is that folder?

The rest of the backup.
@ALL: Someone knows an app that can explore this new backup format? Neither App Extractor and Nandroid Explorer works.

Hello!
First of all, i have the Huawei IDEOS X5 running stock rom with android 2.2.1.
Let's go to the point.
Some days ago, something went wrong with my phone and it couldn't boot. (Details here)
As i was told, i took a backup with CWM (in order to recover later lost data) and i managed to restore an OLD backup and the phone seems to work like a charm. My major concern now is how to get some data that are stored in the data.img .
After some reading here at XDA, i successfully extracted the content of the data.img and located the files that i want to "restore".
And here is the question, is this possible?
If yes, what should i do?
FYI, at my PC i run windows 7.
Thank you in advance for your help!!!

Ok. All you need to do is choose the "Advanced Restore" option to independently choose the data.img to be restored.

i forgot to mention it, but this was the second thing that i tried. (the first was to clear the cache )
Neither of them worked, so, i assume that something is wrong with data.img .

as i said, i have succesfully extracted the content of data.img (detailed how to).
my problem is that i don't know how to send them back to my mobile!
finally i made it!
it wasn't that difficult, but i didn't know that with es file explorer you are able to see the root folder!
To sum up, if you want to restore some app data (app settings, sms archive etc) you first have to extract the data.img file (guide here), then you search in extracted folders the directory data/data/[your_app_name] for your app data.
Then you simply copy the whole folder to your sd and with es file explorer you move it to the correct place (/data/data/[your_app_name]). Overwrite if asked and restart the app if it's running.
easy huh?
thanks for all the replies folks!
is there a way to rename a nandroid back up?
if you are using CWM u can do with a file explorer, navigate to clockworkmod/backup/name folder of what u want, no spaces, u can use . though. or with TWRP u can do it before you do the backup on the right where it says rename backup.

I have ended up with MD5 mismatch far too many times renaming CWM backups, I tend these days to place the backup itself into another folder and title that, tends to save the risk of a very irritating error.
TWRP is pretty badass in that it allows you to title your own backups before you even start the backup process. Much more organized of a way to do it if ya ask me.
When naming a backup avoid special characters, period's etc. -_ are OK. Absolutely no spaces. Follow those rules and your fine. To answer op, grab your favorite file explorer (I prefer Root explorer) and rename it under clockwork/backup.

thanks for all of the replies guys... I got it... should have known this I guess... just wasn't something I ever really needed to do but now with all the great roms out there for the note... its hard to settle on one.. so organizing my Nbackups is important... thanks guys really appreciate it and love this community! cheers

this is the correct method...IMHO.:good:
I've renamed mine countless times with no spaces... no problems at all.
you could just make a folder with the name you like, and move the backup to that folder, avoiding the chance of a mismatched checksum.
Twrp is really easy to use

hi guys,i have a simple question, afte searching of xda,i couldn't get a proper answer so i wish to start a topic.
i have blobs folder in CWM folder,it took about 1 Gig of space.if i delete this folder, does it make or damage the CWM?or the backups will be corrupt?kindly answer.thanks.
I believe they are part of a new CWM incremental backup method and should not be deleted. I did my first backup under that method today and you will notice if you look that the old locations of the backup is less then 20 mb.

All that a 'Son/son's of a human' can do is ask why u messed up with that blob folder in the first place.
if u really see that its aint needed for u any more, then its quite obvious that u arnt into restoring the old backup
In recovery there is an option to free unused backup data, which will detect back up data that isn't needed for old backups anymore. Personally though, I just changed the default backup type back to tar.

Hello All,
I have a Rooted VZW GN2 running Scott's CleanROM with the Perseus kernel with TWRP as the recovery tool. I screwed up royally a few days ago and bricked my phone (dicking around with the Google Wallet mod, which failed I might add) but was able to fix it and get all my settings back the right way. Well given that it took nearly 3 days, I'd like to save a backup of everything how it is.
How do I accomplish this task? I read on xda that a lot of people use "nandroid" so I downloaded it, did the backup using the "online version" that lets you do a nandroid backup while the phone is running (not in Recovery mode) and it saved the copy to a "clockworkmod" folder. Now I know that clockwork recovery is an option besides TWRP, but since I have TWRP does it make this backup useless? Or can I do a full TWRP backup (everything selected) and will it serve the exact same purpose?
Thanks for the help everyone!!!

OK. First i would ALWAYS backup via recovery. So go in TWRP and back it up. However you could try to restore it and if it didn't work it would say MD5 mismatch.

1. Okay so are you saying that a full TWRP backup (all options selected) = nandroid backup?
2. Does this mean that restoring the back-up TWRP file would restore everything as it is now (down to the last detail) or what could I expect of a restore?

Thank you! Well now I'm trying to save my files to my Dropbox but Dropbox doesn't let me upload the entire folder for the Backup. If I use RootExplorer and convert it to a zip, would that be okay? Will TWRP allow a zip for restoring or would I have to do an extraction first?

I'd just like to be efficient with what memory I do have at the moment. I know that TWRP saves the file in its own folder, but it's actually a large collection of files. My plan was to zip them and upload the zip file to Dropbox and delete the "on-phone" copies. Then if worst came to worst, I would just download the zip back on there via my USB cable (I could extract if it necessary) and then I'd restore it. I just want to know if that would work and whether or not TWRP would be able to use a .ZIP file or if it would need all of the files individually.

Okay, I just did some light reading on Orange Back Up but I'm unsure how it works. Does it replace TWRP / Clockwork? Does it require one or the other for reflashing it's nandroid backup? I really like TWRP's setup and would be reluctant to change from it (although I would do it if the advantages stack up).

I'm confused, isn't that what I've been saying the last several posts? What I plan on doing is zipping up my TWRP files, DropBoxing them, and if I need them I'll just hardload them onto my SD card (extracted into the folder or as a zip file depending on what TWRP needs) and then I'd restore that way.

Just make sure to not compress the zip. Not sure that TWRP will be able to restore a compressed backup (probably won't).

I understand you're concerned about saving as much memory as you can. This is something the rest of us face as well, but quit trying to cut corners and simply do a backup the way you're supposed to and move on with your life instead of trying to invent a shortcut. The tried and true methods used within these forums have worked for years the way they're supposed to.
Either use CWM or TWRP to make your backup. I always keep one active backup and delete older ones. It's easy and almost impossible to screw up.
After I soft bricked my device, I found myself making several types of backups after reading on the forums many different ways of backing up. It appears that my efforts are superfluous and that only one backup is necessary. For this reason, I was trying to figure out the best way to store the backup files. I was zipping the file not to save space as much as I was to have only one file to export to Dropbox, as Dropbox only allows files to be imported instead of entire backup folders.

Hello good people of XDA!
First of all I promise, I used the search function, couldn't find anything.
I messed up the restore files, trashed my settings, but I had an image.zip that I saved using recovery-cwmtouch-6.0.3.1-GTI9300.
Question is, how do I restore from the image.zip file?
Stay sharp..

I suppose that as any custom ROM. Just flash it, and see what happens (mine gets hang while doing the flash )
Confirmed. Flash it as any custom ROM
Duh.. Retarded me dropped the image.zip in the clockworkmod backup folder so it complained about the md5sum file. So I moved the file to the external SD card and then it updated, but the phone was still in the trashed state, so I did a full wipe, reinstalled Omega 44.4 and then updated the image.zip again, but now my phone was as it is when you do a full wipe, all settings where as default and not as it was when I restored it.
Doesn't image.zip back up anything..?
In my case fills up a .zip weighting 900Mb, so i suppose yes. It backups anything... Moreover. If you open the zip file, you should see the usual backup files plus a binary script to handle the install

The image.zip is 647 MB.
Unzipping image.zip gives me:
META-INF [a folder]
image-edify
system.ext4.tar.a
boot.img
system.ext4.tar
And what program do I use to restore this with?
It's up to you. Yua can extract the backup from the .zip file, and restore as usual, or you can flash the .zip itself. It is your choice
