rom advice - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok i got my atrix 4g unlocked and rooted.
I am now looking into replacing the crappy webtop with full ubuntu(or similar),and maybe turning up the speed a bit.I am curious what rom(s) you think would best fit my needs!I've looked at a few,but i would like input BEFORE settling on one to try.

There are already several threads about this. Did you go through them?

yes,i am just looking for opinions at this point.I have read about how to do ubuntu, and a few other interesting ones.
I guess i'm not being very clear, sorry bout that.I am looking for peoples opinions for roms.I am wanting a ubuntu type setup,or equivalent.I have a lapdock for my atrix 4g,and i love the concept, but the webtop is soo slow and clunky. So i thought why not replace it with something more...logical,or functional.
I figured since i was having great success with XDA i would ask for opinions.I needed help a couple of times, and i have to say the community here is spot on!Very good info, and CORRECT info.Thought i might get some good opinions on which way to go with my atrix.

Well i finally tried a Rom...
I went with the darkside Rom.very fast compared to stock.now i have to settle on a Webtop replacement...maybe gentop2? I've read alot about it..
Suggestions?!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

Yup just keep trying ROMS, as far as suggestions go, to each their own and just scroll through the Android Development section of the forum and click on each one and "window shop". TBH that's one of the funnest things to do.
But it seems you're interested in Webtop so you can't have any CM ROMS, you'll need BLUR based, and there is a current ongoing (and lots of input from other users) about what they like/don't like about it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871846

Thank you...i am starting to realize that window shopping is the best thing.I was afraid to try things, but the overload of "good" info here at xda is just amazing! So i am starting to lose the fear.
Thanks again!

[Q] Steps to becoming a Rom Developer

I have no experience, but i'd like to learn how to make my own custom rom.
Does anyone know what i'd need for a Thunderbolt GB rom?
I've looked into it and read about Kitchens and how you need them, but don't fully understand.
I'd like to know if the community could help me out here.
I could google it and I have, but I don't get any results that are specifically for the Thunderbolt.
Please go easy on me. :/
I can't answer your question so I apologize for taking a spot in your thread but I don't see any reason people would be rude/harsh towards you especially considering you posted in the proper section! Good luck and hope to see a ROM from you someday!

the phone model does not matter really and you wont find anything specific for the thunderbolt.
Install Linux right off the bat... Dealing with Windows and using environments are a PIA.
Download apktool, kitchen, gimp, and your base ROM whether it be the GB leak or MR2. Read up on how the system works, various editing techniques, and suck up all the info possible. It really is a learning process, not really something someone can tell you how to do.
That's what I did/do to learn.

You do realize too that some people, no matter how hard they may try, are just not cut out to this type of stuff?
I'm not saying you can't do this, but just be aware that the end result may not be what you want it to be.
Thank you Theory and Yareally! I'm good at researching, looking into things and learning

Ya, I remember back in my days in school when these people were in computer classes with me saying how cool it was to learn to program.
Half of them, while very bright, lacked a certain "ability" to grasp programming, shall we say.

Is there a real difference between kholk's new kernel and faux123's??

Hey guys,
I have been looking at the new versions of the kernel's made by both kholk and faux123. I have been trying to figure out which one is better. I was wondering if anyone has done any tests or knows of any noticeable differences between their kernel's.
If no one has, or if people are interested, would anyone be interested in helping me to do that. I would require at least 2 other people with atrixes willing to run tests (so that people can't say its just my phone). I will also love if people can give me suggestions on tests we can run, both real world and synthetic.

Why would you want other people to help you try out something? Just try it and use whichever one you like better. No need to make a thread about it. Its personal preferences not a fact. Another useless [email protected]@

i personally think yall are going a bit overboard on this poor guy...
Eh......it's not dead. We're getting CM7, have an OC kernal, have a couple ROM's. But....if you want MORE
Try this.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsxPfZ76Rrw&list=PL7AA9C38D09F2F2BD&index=1
Edit....
But on second thought. I kinda like the phone the way it is, the lack of ten thousand of the same ROM with a different color for the theme is nice. If you REALLY need that, hit up the Evo 3D or the ET4G. Both will suit you PERFECTLY. And also will keep us from having a million of the same ROM's. BUT...if you WANT the Photon. The above link should tell you everything you need to know about building a ROM. And then you can make it ANYWAY you want, and don't have to rely on anyone else. Problem solved for everyone.
Some of you guys take this so personally... lol
I was simply asking a question if you don't like the question stop reading. The funny part is the same people that cried over this thread will comment again with more *****es and complaints. Relax
I would like to learn how to make roms but really don't have time... instead i donate to those making the roms. Those guys do a great job!

Sounds like you need a different phone. This same question has been asked a bunch of times already and the answer has been that the Photon will probably never be as dev rich as phones like the SGS2 and E3D. Most peeps with the Photon are ok with that but for the others that need to flash something new every day/week need to get another device.
The problem with these type of posts is they create more negativity for the Photon which is why some take it personally. We don't like our beloved device (or developers) put in a negative light.
I agree...its not necessary for anyone to be mean because someone ask a question. It is simple enough to go to the next thread. If NO ONE responds, the OP will get the message.

I expect development to pick up once we have a fully unlocked bootloader.
Its kind of pointless to develop a ROM when you can only flash p-ROMs right now.
Well if you use 4G you can only flash P-ROMs.

[Q] Which ROM Should I Use?

I recently rooted for the first time and I'm looking to find a ROM that isn't too much of an off-chute from the stock ROM but is also decent at conversing my battery life. I was thinking GB since ICS has that severe bug on the galaxy s2 1777
Oh boy you need a lot more searching and a lot more reading before you get any help.

Indeed, I'd start with looking through each of the ROMs out for ICS currently. as well as checking out Kernel tests

Please do yourself a favor and do some research before you even think about doing what you are thinking about doing.
Once you start reading and ask relevant questions, people will answer you better. Even if you haven't tried it yet, and you ask questions that occur only after having read about it, people will start pointing you in the right direction.

But yeah, click around, learn a thing and ask about that thing. If you show you are somewhat informed, you'll be helped. That's how I did it and I was helped tremendously.

KH7 and KK6 are basically the same and run fine everywhere except the Loop and O'Hare, where the data doesn't work at all.
I recently tried out LC5 by accident and it turns out that works great in O'Hare and the Loop, but is very spotty everywhere else. I should probably go through the others but that would require a free weekday in the Loop.
I have task' aokp and run flawless... Never have a single issue..

If it's stock-like GB you're looking for, I've heard great things about Unnamed and UnOriginal.
OP, these threads are highly discouraged in this forum. I encourage those who think the OP does not deserve such flaming, please read more, you'll see that if you did, vs. threads or "which is best" threads are not allowed.
Btw, the person who posted the kernel tests thread, #1, that thread is I9100 and our I777s are different, #2, each person's I777 is different and reacts to different kernels differently, so that thread is practically useless to us.

I think anyone with dev skills should get the phone,
BUT
I don't want this turning into the Rezound forums.
there is NO need for 4 ppl to put out THE SAME EXACT ROM with different "dev tweaks" a.k.a spent 5 mins to change it up to get a ROM posted because ppl like my work.
my goal for this forum is to inform the people.
inform the people who do the REAL work.
the REAL dev work and putting in the hours of time.
we also don't need 2 ROMs that are the exact same thing.
like I told newt and anyone else who wants the phone the more the merrier, but I am going to do EVERYTHING in my power to stop this community to turning into the Rezound, and I think I have enough ppl to support that.
I left apple because Android is open and shares.
I hope that this commmunity continues to ROCK!
I don't want any beef between Devs, trying to out do each other making the SAME ROM, give or take a mod or two different, let's worl together and produce something that is killer.
I left the Rezound a long time ago for a very good reason, way before the inc4 was on horizon, i even bought an inc2 back to 3g i hated that community so bad.
so far it seems this is like the inc2 on steriods!
let's hope it stays that way!

I am with you on this. Right now I am wanting to create a stock rom that is odexed still but yet has the color scheme of ICS. And of course as S-Off becomes available I will be willing to add more to it as well. I just think that as long as we work together instead of competing with each other we can have some solid ROMS that people will want to use as the daily driver instead of flashing every three days.

I see this as a great phone with lots of potential. I too am looking for a semi-stock (i.e. sense-based) daily driver that will suit my needs/wants. So far, what I've seen is that this (currently small) community has been extremely cooperative and respectful.
Well for those of you that know me I don't really do stock roms... I'll build one with all the goodies, but where I come in is when a new device is leaked with a version of sense or ics that we will never see I make sure we do... Porting roms is my thing its what I'm good at and what I enjoy... Everyone wants the next big thing. I myself don't mind sharing at all where I have a problem is when someone uses my work or my whole Rom without permission or credit or if I share with them and the favor is not returned that's the problem I have in the rezound forum and a couple other forums in the past

I do remember some of your great work. Some of them found a home on my OG Dinc for a while. As such, I feel I should clarify my "semi-stock" statement. Your "Optimized Shift" and "Incredible Sensation" ROMs could be included in my in my "semi-stock" comment - You take the best/newest from various sources (leaks, other "newer" phones) and make them work seamlessly within the target device. If I'm using the wrong terminology, please feel free to correct me as I certainly did not mean to offend. I too would be very happy if you were to pick up one of these phones!
