Flashing Custom ROM on Razr - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hi, I am looking around for a ROM to install on a friends device and I noticed that the only tutorial I found for this phone is with the BootManager. Does that mean that is the only way to flash a new ROM?
Can I just install CWM through fastboot and install a ROM through recovery?
Do I need to unlock the bootloader on this device?
Thanks in advance. Sorry for the stupid questions but I have never had a Motorola device and am not familiar with the procedures.

The bootloader on the Motorola RAZR is not unlockable.
I've flashed custom ROMs using both SafeStrap and BootMenu (my favourite is BootMenu, here's a link for more info on it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720351)
The neat thing about the RAZR is that it can be dual-booted using either of these recoveries. I am running both Eclipse ICS and stock Blur.
The most well known ROM for RAZR is probably Eclipse. If you have the GSM model, you'll need a patch or ported version. There are also ported alphas of CM9, 10 and AOKP.
Let me know if you have more questions or want some more links

Thanks for the response.
So, is SafeStrap and BootMenu a custom recovery, or do I still install CWM or TWRP?
Do you have any experience with the CM10 or AOKP ports? If so, are they at all stable?

SafeStrap and BootMenu are both CWM-based recoveries; they're all you need to flash. I prefer BootMenu, though it was a bit more complex to set up (Eclipse wasn't flashing in SafeStrap for some reason so that's when I started trying BootMenu). BootMenu lets you select which ROM to boot upon powering on the device (stock or the second one you flashed, alternatively you can flash your new ROM on top of the stock system but I don't see why you would), or boot into recovery. If you're really used to basic CWM I'd go for SafeStrap unless otherwise needed though.
I've tried both CM10 and the AOKP JB ROM (these flashed perfectly fine in SafeStrap). The camera doesn't work and apparently deep sleep doesn't either. It wasn't friendly on battery in my experience. I had trouble with data, too (this may have been my APN settings... But at the time I hadn't even tried playing with those because I didn't figure that was my problem). Wiping the cache partition and dalvik cache allowed data every so often on the next boot, but then apps started acting up (likely because of the dalvik wipe) until another reboot... which killed the data again :silly: The general consensus is that data works though. But overall, I wouldn't try it just yet unless you make sure it's installed on your second system and not flashed over your stock one.
Here's the link in case you want a looksie at some Jelly Bean goodness: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801379
I can't say enough good things about Eclipse. Try that if you want. Incredibly stable and all main features are working - fantastic modified AOSP look too. It's my daily driver
Original Eclipse CDMA page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1795493
GSM patches in case that applies to you (the FULL Eclipse port is towards the bottom, ready to flash without patching): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805380
Oh, and finally, SafeStrap recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847599
Just make sure you enable Safe System in recovery and you can go flash-happy without any worry! Disabling Safe System puts you right back to stock (you can re-enable Safe System to go back into the ROM you have installed on there).
So yeah, that's about it! Check out the links; everything you need to know should be in them, and I'll try to help more if you need! Have fun
Edit: CM10 port entered beta today (AOKP port disappeared from the page?). Camera is working as well as other little features; still no deep sleep.

Droid Razr Maxx not fully booting after rom flash

I recently tried flashing several different ICS roms and got the same result with each. The phone turns on, but after sitting on the initial Motorola boot screen for a few seconds, the screen goes black. From what I can tell, it is not the roms themselves that are causing it.
I follow all of the wipe instructions to the letter.
I am able to boot into safestrap recovery and do a restore.
One of the roms I tried (I can't remember the other)
Gummy Resurrection rom
Current stock version: 6.12.173 (latest update)
Does anyone have an idea as to what the problem may be?
Are you GSM or cdma?
Sent from my Droid Razr using Tapatalk
Based on the stock version I would assume Cdma. What version of Safe strap? I also assume since you can go into Safe strap you can access the internal memory and external sd card. What cwm are you using? So what other Roms did you try? Were you not ever able to get anything other than stock running?
I am using the latest version of safestrap (1.07)
I can access internal memory and SD card, as I am able to restore my backup of the stock rom.
I'm not using CWM, I'm using safestrap recovery.
I think the other rom was |Aokp| |Icsrazr| |Kang| |4.0.3| Ab (it can be found on droidrzr.com)(I can't post links yet).
I haven't tried anything other than those two roms, but since I got the same result for both, I would assume that the issue affects any rom I try to flash. I can try to flash a different rom and see if that works.
Umm oh that takes alot of thought. No idea at this point. Only think I could say is ditch Safe Strap re install and start again. Im sure smarter people will give a say.
Maybe the update fixed something?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391900
I got a Gingerbread rom to boot correctly. Maybe both of those ICS roms have the same issue. I dunno lol.
Yeah lol ive flashed both kinds of Roms and always getting them to work. Currently on AOKP M4 | AXI0M | KANG | RAZR and loving it.
ICS roms requairs you to have CWM on boot recovery if I'm not wro ng.
The first thing I see is safe strap maybe he needs to re install or update for some reason.
I wasn't aware that there was a later version of safestrap out. That seems to have done the trick. ICS roms are now booting properly.
Sweet now enjoy some Roms.
So I have bootstrap installed now. Can i just load safestrap overtop of it? or do I need to remove bootstrap first?

Best Stable/Good ROMs for SGP 5.0

There are a lot of roms out there, which ics rom is the best? Which GB rom is the fastest?
The only one stable enough and with good UI to be usable is this (GB based):

All the rest are eternal alphas with important features not working or just experiments.

Not true. I have used GenericGinger for 3 months with maybe 2 crashes total. It's quite stable and fast, and the UI is much better than that one (of course, I use Go Launcher with any ROM), especially because it has an ICS theme (although it says beta, I've had no issues).

ive tried to flash eyrigit rom's 3.5 version but evrytime i flash it the wifi doesnt work? when i turn on the wifi it just says error?
What rom has 100% working functions?

I completely agree. I've been testing this rom for a couple weeks and everything works like the stock rom did, if not better. It has awesome features. GenericGinger is also perfectly stable with the ice cream theme and has other features but not as much.
As soon as someone helps to fix the ice cream kernel I'm sure we will have allot more stable roms to choose from.
Newbie Question
Forgive me if this is a dumb question:
Does Eryigit's Custom ROM GingerBread-2.3.6 G70ZCKPA Release 3.5 INCLUDE Entropy's Kernal ??
or must you 1st install Entropy's Kernal BEFORE you install Eryigit's Custom ROM GingerBread-2.3.6 G70ZCKPA Release 3.5 ?
Thanks in advance.

It comes with the kernel. Since you are using entropys kernel im guessing you are from the US meaning your stock is 2.3.x meaning the kernel is the correct format for the rom anyway so if for some strange reason it does not come with the kernel then you will be safe from brick in theory. And you can put entropys kernel on afterwards. You can check to see if it is there by going into cwm and if it isn't there then your on stock kernel (unless you all ready have another kernel on already)
But I am pretty sure that it comes with the kernel in.

You can't be too careful
Thank you Samwes.
I am from the US with stock SGP5 Model YPG70CWYXXA and I dread the chance of bricking, so I'm doing lots of homework by looking at and trying to understand various postings here.
KIES is working on my Windows PC, so my plan is to root via SuperOneClick and install Eryigit's latest tar file via the latest version of Odin. I read in the install instructions that you are supposed to:
(in Clockwork recovery mod : wipe cache partition ---> OK; Wipe data/factory reset --> OK;
advanced - wipe dalvik cache --> OK; after that install new rom , You must do it , clean installation.)
The stock version does not have Clockwork recovery mod, so do I need to do the Odin install twice? e.g. The 1st install to GET the Clockwork recovery mod feature, then go into Clockwork recovery mod to do the above "wiping", and then repeat the install via Odin again ??
Actually, once you've got Entropy's recovery mod installed, you can just use that to install other roms. Just copy the new rom file over (in a .zip) to your device, boot into recovery mode, and choose the right options. (It's fairly intuitive)
You say you dread the chance of bricking your device; if you're not prepared to accept and live with the possibility of doing so, perhaps terminally, then I suggest you not do it.
What, exactly, do you hope to gain by rooting and flashing a different ROM? Does the stock ROM lack some specific functionality that you want/need, or is it only for experimental purposes?
If you're just looking to gain the experience, then that's a perfectly valid reason to explore the flexibility of Android, but you must be careful in what you do, and realize the consequences of error.
Just do a backup in recovery before you flash..i did not now anything before i flash it and i brick it but people here help me to unbrick it and since then i know how and i flash almost every rom from here for testing.

I bricked my first device months ago because I didn't have any experience flashing stuff, I made a mistake, but now I know better.
Don't be afraid, just try it, but be informed first, now there's a lot more information about anything related to this device.

Yeah I should of researched more I was stupid, when I tried flashing a from with Odin it would work, so I reset the device and then when it rebooted I came up with the picture with the phone and then dots connecting it to a computer and then that didn't work with Odin either, so I was stupid and let the battery run all the way out because I though it would fix it but no. It got hard bricked and it now doesn't turn on. Hope any of you never make the mistake I did, and now I'm trying out a USB jig because I know its charging so there is still chance, if that doesn't work then I will have to take off the back plate and remove the battery and I will go from there, but for now I'm awaiting for my USB jig to arrive, it sucks.....

[Q] Downgrade from CM9 to CM7

Hi all,
I have a friend with an AT&T Atrix 4G. I've had a Droid X and current have a Galaxy Nexus & Nexus 7. I did everything you could do to the X and know my way around the Nexus very well; the atrix is a little confusing to me. moto-fastboot and the idea that SBFing is bad are new concepts to me. On the Droid X, if you were in trouble, you just SBF'd.
My friend had some trouble with his Atrix the other day, he was stuck at the splash screen, we got it half way fixed and he was in a bootloop, and eventually we got a version of CM9 on there: 9.0.0-rco-atrix-kang. The phone is running now but the ROM is unstable. I'd like to know how to safely downgrade to a CM7 ROM. Is it as simple as booting into recovery, wiping, and flashing the earlier rom? Something blur based would be ideal at this point as he's just looking to have a stable phone back. He got into rooting/ roming on his own so I'm not sure what updates, if any, were on there before he started. Is there an easy way to check and see which bootloader version he's on, find out which SBF we can safely use, etc? He does have it unlocked, so that should make things easier (or maybe harder, this Atrix really is a mystery to me...).
TL;DR - How do you safely downgrade an Atrix 4G from CM9 to CM7 and which recovery is the best to be using?
I used to switch between CM10 and CM7 all the time, if the phone is rooted and bootloader is unlocked, it's as simple as wiping data/cache, wiping dalvik, format system, install ROM, boot, reboot, install gapps.
Did your friend follow directions and make a nandroid of original before wiping? That would be the simplest way.
エイトリックス から 送ります
He said he had a backup but that when he restored it it was bootlooping. I'm assuming it was some kind of issue with switching recoveries or something like that. With the Droid X there was a recovery for 2nd-init roms and a recovery for blur roms. With the Nexuses it's mostly TWRP or CWM but as long as you're on the latest you can flash anything. Is there any reason to downgrade recoveries on the Atrix? Is there one "up to date" recovery? I see a lot of posts that point to a 2011 thread with the "latest CWM based recovery" but that seems kind of old...
Alright so I think I have this sorted out for the most part, and my understanding is that RomRacer made a version of CWM that we should be using on the Atrix. I just can't find a link to download the thing, is there a thread in development? When I search all I find is a ton of threads telling me to use it and no one linking it.
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500 Right?
Or is TWRP better?
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/72
Lot of people love TWRP, but I'm one of the few that still uses RomRacers CWM 5.0.2.7 (I think) and no issues flashing CM10.1 (android 4.2.1) Had it for over a year, and works great every time. If it's not broken, don't fix it.
As for the boot loop, those are usually fixed with a wipe. Try wiping everything and restoring.
Edit: Yeah, that seems like the proper thread. Sorry, haven't looked at it since I first rooted my phone. Try TWRP, most people swear by it. The touch does add a nice feature, but I'm too lazy to make the switch.

Once you have an unlocked BL and a custom recovery, switching between pretty much all ROMs is safe so long as you stay away from SBFs.
You can flash to stock rom and then install CM7

Thanks for the help, I'm glad I checked in. On the Droid X whenever anything went wrong and someone posted a thread like this the first ten replies were "Just SBF" - that used to be safe, until they rolled out .621, but that was end-of-life anyway.
I digress; next time I see him we'll iron this out and he'll be off to the races. Thanks again.

[Q] Little error with Safestrap

Hi all, this is the first time i need help with my smartphone. I made a small (but stupid :silly mistake trying to install my first custom rom in my xt910 gsm, specifically: [ROM] [CDMA/GSM] Unofficial CM10.1 (JB 4.2.1) [01/29: UPDATES].
Ok, i read the guide several times but i also made an error: i installed cyano in the stock rom slot, instead of slot-1. A very noob error...
obviously system won't boot (bootloops).
Very good.
Only in a second time i've created the slot-1, and correctly flashed Rom and Gapps. The rom runs smooth!
now i learned the lesson, must read CAREFULLY guides!! but i destroyed stock rom.
i want to come back to the original state, and install CM 10 in "dual boot"
I need to flash stock 4.0.4 again, but how?
I suppose i need to follow these steps:
1- uninstall safestrap (i need to delete also slot-1?)
2- boot into fastboot
3- flash stock ics with RSDlite
4- apply ics ota update
5- root
6- intall safestrap
7- flash cm10 to slot-1
is the right procedure, or am i wrong?
could someone correct me please?
Thanks in advance :good:

Dunno if my comment would be the solution but this problem happens to me xD So when I have this problem I put in into RSD and flash ICS and then start over, but I don't recommend you CM10.1 because the camera isnt fully working, there is a JB OTA the verizon for example I have it right now and everything is ok
Once you flash the ICS update, if you want to use any JB or CM10.1 roms, check out the razr dual kernel utility that is floating around the forums. It will allow you to flash the JB kernel from the JB OTA leaks (and will allow you to return to the ICS kernel). It's a nice piece of kit. It's true though, the CM roms out there for the razr are ALL buggy. Camera issues, problems with SD card mounting, etc... Good luck!
Solved!
Thanks for the answers!
I solved the problem flashing directly the fastboot rom with rsd lite.(+ota update and root)
Manually erased safestrap folder.
4.0.4 stock up and running.
Cm 10.1 is full of bugs, camera issues (no flash, no widescreen, no hd recording video), bluetooth issues (no bt audio during calls). graphic issues.
Is only a good toy to play with.
I hope in the near future we could see a fully working cm 10.1, developers are working hard!
Happy to read this and remember if you are going to flash a ROM you always have RSD and never do the process with less than 40% Battery

I'm not going to tell you which is better. But anyway, the Safestrap is based on the TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and the Boot Menu is based on the CWM (ClockworkMod). The Boot Menu gives you more options than the Safestrap, such as 6 system slot, backup CID, erase CID .etc. Also the Boot Menu can bypass the reboot without booting through bp tools because of the CID erased. The Safestrap recovery are simple recovery, its easy to use.

dont mean to hijack your thread, but I figured my question applies here...
I'm currently running safestrap 3.05. For some reason I just CAN'T get it to update to 3.11. Tried every conceivable way to install it and it just wont stick. Therefore, I'm considering making the move to BMM.
So my question is, how should I go about installing BMM and installing roms? Do I need to completely uninstall SS first before installing BMM?

I used SS and got great results. But, CM10.2 (dirty falash on top of Cm10.1) was a disaster. Had to wipe entire phone.
Now have clean stock and thinking of Ss or BMM. Just can't make up my mind. LOL
BTW; Which Rom are u running? I am open to suggestions. like I said cm10.1 worked well, but for some reason, lost mms features.
Hello everybody,
how to backup CID by using safestrap? If its not possible to back up cid with safestrap,
what am i supposed to do? is it possible to install BMM without deleting safestrap?
Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2311349 is the guide how to switch from SS to BMM and vice versa.
Sent from my Razr XT910
Here's some explanation from my experience with both (CMIIW):
1. SS will create new virtual space from /sdcard partition for each slot (/system, /data will be created as individual file inside /sdcard), whereas BMM will use the predefined /system and /data as the base slot.
2. both SS and BMM support Kexec ROM and Kernel, which means that the Kernel will be loaded after the main kernel loaded. so no need to erase CID, since the modded ROM and kernel are loaded after the original kernel (which uses CID as lock checker) loaded. You only need to erase CID if you use the official ROM from different region (e.g. using USA ROM on Asia/Europe RAZR). Otherwise feel free to flash the Alternative ROM.
Me myself prefer to use BMM as main recovery because it won't eat up the /sdcard partition compared to SS. and maybe some I/O performance penalties may be incurred with SS method. using BMM is not as frightening as it sounds. It is more dangerous because you can brick your device, but as long as CID is still there, RSD Lite is just a click away to restore the device back.
thanks for replying guyz
