there isn't any tumb rule of sort that u should choose a rom according to baseband ma8
u can always change the baseband, if the same is not wrk'ng properly irrespective of the Custom/Stock Rom ur into
u can flash the baseband via cwm recovery if its a .zip file, and thro 'pc odin' if its a .tar file

1. The baseband they are talking about is probably for iPhone.
In Android the baseband is the Radio or modem, Simple. It is responsible for network signal and mobile data (4G, 3G, 2G).
Stop reading tutorials from garbage blogs. Everything you see here on XDA should be enough in preventing you from spoiling your phone.
There are many things you need to consider before flashing custom stuffs but the most important thing is flashing what is meant for your PHONE MODEL.
Kernel and your android version are also of great importance when flashing.
2. Not BASEBAND! You only need to change your KERNEL for your Android version and phone model

its not the baseband thats important ma8, when ur on stock rom and u have to install Custom Roms means u have to 'Root' ur phone first, for which the important thing u have to consider is the Kernel and the Build in ur settings>about phone (where u get the info of the same Kernel and Build)

well these are my questions, i'm looking for some answers i'm sure you can help me or erase these doubts i have.

PDA: i9100UHKI2
PHONE: i9100UHKI1
CSC: i9100TPAKI2
i got my phone 1 day ago the first thing i did was a cf root kernel and my phone was root then i got speedmod kernel and everything ok (So only kernels customizations) but here is my doubt
1) Can i flash any kernel i want? I think i can, but.... haha
2) can i flash now any custom rom i want, for example villain, litening, etc
IF i can, will i have problems with mi 3g network. All the explanation with the csc is not clear on my head (or maybe i can put manually my apn settings, or flash a csc unbrandeed thas my stock rom has)
3) can i flash between any stock rom or this is not recommended
4)if i can flash any custom rom like villain, that custom rom is 2.3.5 and my phone is 2.3.4 is that a problem or not. maybe i need to flash an stock rom 2.3.5.
I have made efs backup, cwm backup, and my stock firmware is on stock firmwares thread so great
that's all thanks in advance guys
this forum helped me a lot.
PS: i have read al the noob guides and faq, and searched on the forum but truly i didn't find my answers and my english is not good enough haha so it's get complicated sometimes to understand clearly the idea.
im not expert but i can answer few of your question..
1. yes u can ( btw u didnt have to root ur phone at all.. since speedmod comes with preroot)
2. yes u can flash any rom u want but some roms isnt compatible with some kernels so u should read carefully which one is compatible
3. im not entirely sure but i think u cant... because different stock roms have different csc which is ur region data... i live in finland so i can only flash nordic roms.. but as i say before not entirely sure
4. about this i have no idea =/

Yup, you can do all of these. I installed cf-root on my own SGS2 aswell and went straight for custom ROM's (im still staying on the cf-root (stock with root) kernel. Didnt need a new one, but it doesnt matters you can do anything anyways).
As long as the rom/kernel you download is for the sgs2 (the clear one, not at&t or any other), everything will be perfectly fine.
As for the 3g problems, just try the rom out (or read feedback/ROM desctiption)

Oh and about question 4. Yes you can, its just like updating from 2.3.* to any other. I was on stock 2.3.3 and jumped straight to the Revolution ROM which is based on 2.3.5

And about connection, you should simply get the Modem that is suitable for you after flashing the ROM, but thats not a problem

PDA: I9100XXLPQ
PHONE: I9100XXLPQ

The phone is rooted with CWM and with ICS 4.0.3 installed
OK my question: I want to install a new rom from here but now I don’t understand with the MINI if your baseband is correct you can install any kernel and rom you like
But now I hear talk about modems and all kinda things .. please help me get from stock ICS to a custom rom
Modems are for the functions of your GSM/Data services of the Phone, generaly it is not so important to have a perticular modem but recommended to use what is relesed for your region,
this can be flashed seperetely at any time from your CWM, until you find a best...
Most of the custom roms Devs pick the best modem for their roms which is universaly working, you dont wat to change it. and some custom roms dont have Modem, your existing modem will remain when you flash such roms...
Modem and Baseband are samething...

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584

I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.
if I flash with the CF LBQ, what is my next step?

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps
Ohhhhhh. I get it. Flash using CF, or CM 10, use triangle app to remove warning triangle and if I need to unroot, flash with 4.04 (my region) using odin? Sound pretty simple. Am I missing any steps?

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..
Hi everyone! I just rooted my phone and it was sooo easy.

Hi all,
well, I've read the site rules and watched carefully the video... I fully admit that I'm a noob and I'm ready to live with this status for a while
Despite this, I'll anyway post my questions, and I'm really grateful in advance for any help.
I want to root my SGS2 because I would like to install some specific apps and why not to change the rom to have something more "serious".
My actual config is as follow:
GT-I9100
Android version: 4.0.4
Base band: I9100BULP8
Kernel version: 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Thu Sep 13
Built: IMM76D.BULPG
I'm really not familiar with all terms used in the android space, I read several threads looking for a rooting manual and found quite good stuff. My actual worry is that I'm unable to find something (cf_root etc...) to use matching with my actual installed levels, can someone point me out on a sure rooted stuff and how to.
I don't want to have my phone out of order, this is the reason for this post. As stated I got confused and got lost with the wording used, ex: don't use this rom because if you have the eMMC chip with VYL00M (my case) etc... That's why thanks in advance !

Lol the poor guy ain't good with technical words, you see your current version of kernel probably has a serious issue called a brick bug, it renders the phone unusable and recovery is a hassle in case of soft brick, hard brick situation is unrecoverable. Install got brick bug app by chainfire and check whether you are vulnerable so you can be more cautious, installing cm roms and certain other roms are safe, before flashing you must check whether it is effected by eMMc brick bug, and do not perform any erase activity if you are effected by the bug.
Peace
Edit : If you are effected install via Odin only. And this bug is present only in ICS Roms currently, if you are in gb you are safe, and be careful about flashing stock ICS use safe custom roms which has eMMc Cap erase disabled.
Using GT - I9100

Is installing a CF-root a more straight forward process ? Assuming to find the right one...

Siyah is the best alternative for u ma8, as its brick bug free for sure and beeing the best kernel to root with gr8 success
u dwnld the tar file of siyah version 4.1.5 for S2 and flash the same by putting the file in 'PDA' section of 'ODIN' to root ur phone
u can google for lot of Youtube Video guides avilable for ODIN flash on ur s2
You can flash This from stock recovery (place the file in SD Card) and flash via stock recovery , then flash any custom Rom if you want to try JB , try NeatROM Lite v4.0 , after flashing this , you can just flash latest PhilZ Kernel v3.75 (Link in my signature )
Thanks for your help,
a last question (I hope) why the 4.1.5 version instead of the 5.0.1 ?
Stability issues ?
Have a good day

first root ur phone using v4.1.5 and then upgrade it to v5.0.1
i dislike the siyah v5.0.1..best to use siyah 4.1.5
so basically steps:
1. Install clockwork mode recovery(CWM) through recovery mode
2. Install siyah 4.1.5 by installing zip from sd card
3. now install any rom of your choice and enjoy
OK I am a NOOB too but need some clarification I just replaced my i9100 do to a brick bug so I gotta get this right. I just checked the replaced motherboard and sure enough it also has the bug SO, I need to know as it does seem quite clear already but only say 90% so to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR in order to avoid the bug I simply have to use siyah 4.1.5 and then I am free to flash whatever, GB + ICS + JB / 4.0.4 , 4.1.1 whatever the bug ONLY applys to my understanding (correct me here) with stock recovery and original ICS kernel.
NEXT NOOB question often ROM's pack in a kernel what things could bring back a dangerous situation. Flashing ROM's ? (maybe include a dangerous kernel or something ?).... 2: apps? can I ever factory data wipe safely again or with siyah after the previous protocol is it safe ? ?
:silly::silly:Also really Confused !?!?!?!:silly::silly:

Hey all,
just to let you know the status. I installed Siyah 4.1.5 using Odin as advised by Sun90 and everything went perfectly smooth.
Thank you !
I think my mext move will be first to install a good backup tool then to scout for other rom like cyanogen etc...
@futiless,
as I said using Odin, it's safe ! I read that dual boot is now available with the latest version of Siyah, that could be the answer for trying new roms while preserving a working one. For sure I'll test it.
Thanks again for your help

Hello professionals. Here is my phone information.
Model number : GT-I9100
Android version : 4.0.3
Baseband version I9100XXLPX
Kernel version : [email protected] #3
I just want to gain root access on my phone without changing my current phone information as I want to install some apps that require root level acess. I've read from CF guide and some other guide that brick bug is an issue when it comes to ICS. I need some advice (links please) regarding my matter. Also, (a very noob question) When I flash, does KIES needs to be opened too?

I am sure you must have read or watched several videos regarding root before you are asking this(if you haven't you must), you must know that since you are running 4.0.3 firmware you aren't effected by that bug, that bug is present only in 4.0.4 firmware, and yes what you asked is a great big noob question as Kies should never be opened and if possible termination of Kies background process is also recommended as Kies interferes with Odin which is the application which you are going to use for flashing your tar file(file needed to root) Sorry for no links i am too lazy to search,
1.for rooting just google or search forum" how to root s2 running 4.0.3 ICS", be sure to select the file closely matching your baseband version "XXLPX"
2.even though you are safe in 4.0.3 you can check whether you have a faulty chip, install "eMMc check" app from play store, if you have a Insane chip at least it will prevent you from upgrading to 4.0.4 stock.

WRONG, u should always suggest them to choose the CF-root kernel based upon the Current stock kernel or the BUILD version not based on the baseband aka modem ma8
PS- in OP's case (Kernel version : 3.0.15-I9100JPLPF[email protected] #3) he has to choose a Cf-root kernel based on LPF

WRONG, u should always suggest them to choose the CF-root kernel based upon the Current stock kernel or the BUILD version not based on the baseband aka modem ma8
PS- in OP's case (Kernel version : 3.0.15-I9100JPLPF[email protected] #3) he has to choose a Cf-root kernel based on LPF

thanks for the information but if i flash an LPF kernel that's intended for i9100 (not GT-i9100) will it also work? i dont see a kernel LPF for GT-i9100. If you know, could you give me link? really thanks!

First of all i am extremely sorry for suggesting to get a kernel matching your baseband version,i did it in the spur of the moment without thinking and i acknowledge that it was a critical mistake, as Sun90 said(thanks so much) you must select your insecure kernel based on the current build version of the kernel you are running, you can easily find JPLPF version insecure kernels,or it must match the last three letters LPF, GT-i9100 is the international galaxy s2 model number and usually just plainly i9100 will be refering to the Gt-i9100 but just check the thread and make sure you dont use the variants like i9100i/M/T..etc
Sorry again for the foolish mistake, was not intentional,i always use pre rooted custom roms and suddenly made the idiotic mistake of suugesting the modem version instead of the kernel built.
And if anybody feels like gloating over this mistake of mine please do, i dont need to prove anything, as it was purely unintentional and a spur of the moment mistake.
