[Q] Interesting SD card issues. Can you help? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I just got a replacement LTE not that long ago and decided to give custom roms a go. I used RegawMOD and then flashed SuperLTE rom. I noticed that it was taking a while to pull my music and pictures in from my SD card into Gallery and Music apps. I also went to change my ringtone and my custom tones weren't in the chooser. I thought that it was weird because I gave it plenty of time. I went into ESFileExplorer and can access all of my stuff on the card, but it still wouldn't show up in their respective apps! I thought maybe it needed another cleaning, so i booted into recovery, did factory reset, wiped cache and dalvik cache, rebooted to system... still same problem. The one thing I DID notice this time was that the pictures that were on my external SD card in the DCIM folder showed up in the "All Photos" album in the Gallery, but not in their separate folders. I figured maybe it was a ROM problem, searched the forum and saw 1 other person with the same issue. Everyone was trying to help him, but everything suggested he tried and it didn't work. I then flashed MeanROM hoping to have better luck. SUPER CLEANED it by doing all the wipes twice before I flashed MeanROM.... SAME PROBLEM! People in that forum were trying to help me as well, but everything they suggested, I did, still didn't work. One thing suggested that I tried was to back up, format, and restore my SD card. That actually worked - but only for making a couple of my photo albums show up (not all of them), but my music still won't pull into any music apps and my ringtones aren't in my settings! I'm going craaaaazy! It clearly isn't a ROM problem, what could it be??!!

Might be the phone itself.
Swyped on my EVO LTE

Did u try moving all files to computer then mount sd in twrp then reformat? Is it internal sd or external sd2? If you got a cheap sd card off eBay from China it could be that. U try other sd cards to make sure it is the phone?

Try to fix permissions in TWRP. I had the same problem only some pics and no music was showing up in their apps. I fixed permissions and rebooted to everything working fine.

I guess I don't know what exactly the steps are to mount it in twrp and reformat. I haven't tried this yet. Can you be a little more specific on the exact steps? Thank you!! I want to try this!! I see where you go in to mount, but there are a bunch of boxes, some checked, some not...
Its a SanDisc card and I've tried 2 different cards to no avail

If u have tried different cards then I'm not sure that would help. Did you try fix permissions like the second post said? Try that first since it is easier and less time consuming. I've never had to reformat a sd card before, so I don't know exact steps. It's pretty straightforward, just back-up the contents of the card on your computer first.
To reformat on windows you right click on the storage card from computer in start-up menu. Should give warning about erasing everything, but if you've backed up then no worries.

Oh, my bad. I thought there might be some way that would be different by doing it through TWRP. I've already wiped and reformatted the card. I'm pretty sure something happened due to the way the bootloader was unlocked or with TWRP or something. Nobody seems to know why it would happen, but I'm not the only one it's happened to. It's really annoying!!! I tried fixing permissions like 15 times... Nothing is working. Thanks for trying!

Don't know if this will work because of everything else you've tried, but you can give this a shot.

[Help] Eris no longer able to install apps

I droped my phone (I know :/ ) and my phone was no longer able to open apps on the sd card so I wiped and reflashed Tazz v.22 but it can't install any apps from the market or sd, just hangs on install. File manager and music along with recovery can read the SD card but the OS can't dismount it, it only force closes. This is not the first time this has happened but the only time it has had a negative effect. The back cover and battery flew across the room any ideas on what has happened or how to fix this? Everything (processor, touch screen, WiFi/3G, ect) all work :3
Try reformatting the SD card from Amon RA recovery and see if that helps. You have to use the Partition option to do so, just choose 0MB for everything unless you know you want additional partions (for Apps2SD and/or Swap). Make sure and copy anything you want to save from the SD card (if it's recoverable) first, and put it back on after reformatting if you need it back on there.
After putting whatever ROM(s) you want to reflash on your SD card, make sure and check the MD5 hash to see if it matches the MD5 hash reported by the ROM dev (ask them in their thread what it should be if they don't post it in the first post).
Thanks, I'm partitioning now and ill post how it goes
if that process doesnt work, you might try another sd card if you have one handy, just to see if its the reader or what.... you can alway take advatage of your warranty and tell em your sd wont mount, if nothing else works....
Unfortunately it didn't work. I am not sure why my SD would work for everything (Apps, and Recovery) but not the main OS and what that has to do with my phones ability to install apps to any location. I have tested: GPS, WiFi, 3G, Touch Screen, SD mounting to comp., and LEDs and they all work; This is strange. I am not sure what is "wrong", is there a way to check to see if the internal memory, or a special important place that I don't know of, is damaged or corrupted?

That's a good idea; my only problem is that the water sticker just under the cover has been activated by my hand sweat back in days when I tried for hours on end to use Captainkrtek's root method. But the sticker on the battery is not activated so hmmm
Edit: I am googling my problem and will try some of the ideas out there and let everyone know how it goes
i think youd be okay... mine fell in a pool and they still accepted it for a broken sd reader over 8 months ago ...

SD card won't mount

Hey guys, about a month ago i accidentally dropped my phone on my coffee table and it cracked my screen. I didn't notice any other damage. Now it won't read the SD card. It will try and mount it and then tell me I removed it or something. I'm running Cyanogen 2.3.3. Stable rom and I have a recent nandroid backup.
I would like to fix this without a restore, but I can restore if that'll fix it. I'm just hoping it's not a hardware problem.
As always, any and all (attempts to) help are greatly appreciated!
Are you using S2E or Darktremor apps2sd? (That wouldn't be the cause of the problem, but would change the way you'd troubleshoot it.)
I really don't know what either of those are. I use Titanium backup and the android app manager to move the apps.
k, just checking. I'd suggest trying with a different SD card if you have one to see if it works with that. If it does, then I'd try reformatting the original SD card to see if that gets it to work again. Just make sure you copy all the files off the SD card with a computer first, then copy them back after reformatting.
Okay it was my SD card. I've moved everything over to a 2GB card now. Problem is, I can't get anything to read my 8GB now. I tried formatting after I backed it up, but it failed during the format and now neither my computer nor my phone will read mount it. It's obviously corrupt. Is there any way to fix this? I can fit most of my stuff on my 2GB card, but I'd like to save the 8GB if possible...

Try this program: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
It has revived an SD card for me in the past. Hope it works for you.
okay I got the SD formatter. I've inserted the 8GB card using a working micro-SD to SD adapter in my card reader and the program recognized the drive and shows the correct size (7.39 GB). When I try and actually format the card, though, it says that either the drive, or the card is not supported by it. :\
I figured updating the drivers for my card reader would fix this, but I have no idea where to find them...
Some thing you might try:
1) Make sure the lock switch isn't engaged on the microSD to SD adapter. I had to tape the lock switch in the off position on my adapter to keep it from switching into the on position when I plugged it into my card reader.
2) Try formatting another SD card to see if it works.
I don't think you're going to find any new drivers for something as simple as a card reader.

There are many variations of that model... Go here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp?nav=Download and find your specific model, then download and install the card reader driver available/suitable for it.

[Q] What to do if I lost access to my internal storage as well as sd card

Hi, new guy with english problems here, be gentle
So basically I lost access to any kind of storage on my SGS2 running CM10.1. Here's what happened. I was using internal and sd for a long time, then, as I needed my SDHC elsewhere i removed it. Nothing was lost as all data was stored internally. BUT. After formatting SD in FAT32 and putting it back everything crashed. Apps are refusing to work, demanding an SD card. Files Manager says that folder was lost. All of them. First thing I wanted to do was to flash CM once again, a newer NB but my PC does not read internal storage either, and putting it in sd doesn't do me any good as cwm doesn't see it also. CM can access internal, so i flashed the same version of CM once again - the only one i got there. Nothing changed. I'm a bit lost and seek any advice
U checked if u really format it with Fat32?

Sent from my GT-I9100 running with RootBox
Sure. Also I formatted it with SDFormatter, thanks to this CWM can mount it and format by itself, but OS does not respond anyway

MicroSD will not save anything correctly since partition

I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. My SD card won't save anything correctly (pictures, apks, Roms, etc.) since it was partitioned. The oddest thing is that some things will save correctly, but very few. Everything will save, but when you try to open something, the phone says it can't be opened. When I rooted my Motorola Atrix 4g, it forced me to partition my SD card. I don't know anything about modding and I just followed online instructions to root my phone. I don't remember exactly what was going on, but my phone wouldn't work until I partitioned. I used ROM manager to partition. Anyway, I was thinking about formatting my card, but I'm afraid my phone won't work without the car being partitioned. So, I was also thinking about partitioning again. What should I do, and why is the card acting this way?

Well if you don't have any important data on the card then you could try to format it (maybe with a computer). How did you partition the card (I mean 1 partition, or more)?
I'm sorry. I really have no knowledge about these things, but I assume it has 1 partition. I partitioned it with ROM manager to make a space for apps. Which I don't use and never have, so I don't know why it forced me to do it.

So, I'm going to format the card. I need it for my Atrix HD, which has NO space on it. Why is my Atrix 4G a much better phone than my Atrix
HD? It had tons more space and it is much quicker. But the HD has a bigger HD screen that looks awesome and that's why I prefer using it. I can't wait to get a new phone so I can root the HD and use the SD card for apps. Sorry. I went on a rant. Anyway, if anybody knows anything about the partitioning issue let me know. Thanks.

Recovery - Help

I am on a sprint LGLS990, rooted with twrp. I have just started doing backups. I did one the other day on the internal storage which worked fine. Now I'm doing a bu on the external sd and worked well until generating md5. Its said this for the last 30 minutes. It appears that it is stuck. Is there any way to stop or cancel this?? I tried pushing any of the hardware buttons in back, but power just locks it, then I swipe to unlock it. Please help!! I don't know if I can do a battery pull or not if that would stop it, but I definately dont want to ruin my ext sd card as I have sensitive info that I need.
Update - I did a battery pull and it just seemed to reboot it. Nothing wrong with my external SD card that I can see. I can successfully do a backup on internal but everytime I try on external it gets stuck on generating md5. I have searched google but can't come up with anyone that has had the same issue on the g3. It's a sprint with model LG LG 990.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just a thought, are there any other recoveries that work on my model g3?

Is the card larger than 32GB, and formatted as exFAT? If so, that's likely the problem. Our bumped version of TWRP has a bug affected the ability to read exFAT cards. If so, you can copy all the data off to a PC (or Mac), reformat the card as FAT32, and test it out. Here's some info on how to reformat the card to FAT32:

If it's 64GB, it was probably formatted as exFAT from the factory. And yeah, you'll probably lose some storage space by formatting it as FAT32. How much will depend on what you have stored on the card. A lot of small files will waste more space than the same number of large files.
I just copied the external card to my desktop. I tried opening it up but it wouldn't open, saying it could not open that file. I even tried to extract and it said the same thing. I don't want to erase my card unless I know for a fact that my files are safe. With some apps, I have over 2 years of sensitive data that I can't afford to lose. Maybe it might be easier to just do a backup on my internal, then just copy and paste to my external.
There's a new TWRP that I believe fixes the exFAT bug:

I just did a backup on external SD. It appears to be working. The only thing is that it took 30 minutes to backup.
I am rooted and have the latest twrp recovery, think it is 2.8.2. On this version, I am able to save my backup directly to ext sd. I have noticed however that when I do a backup, it takes between 30 to 40 minutes to do one. However, I just did a restore last night and it took over a hour and a half. I have only had the phone about 2 weeks. When I had my S3, doing backup would takes kess than 10 minutes, same with restores. Is this normal or is something amiss?? Thanks for the feedback.
Update-
I have also noticed that when backing up to the internal that it takes just a few minutes, now when I backup onto the ext sd it takes about 20 minutes. The issue I had above I believe is connected when I used twrp manager instead of booting directly into recovery from the power menu. But its still taking alot longer to backup on my ext vs the internal. What would be the cause of that??
It seems most have issues if you SD is more than 32g.
The recommended format seems to be Fat32 on any card. That may be your issue. TWRP shouldn't be taking any extra time.

Did you format it in Windows/Linux as Fat32? Then move your files to it, and put it in the phone.
You may need to format it as 2 partitions.
Other than that, I really don't know what else to say.

I formatted it in Windows 8 but I had to use a third party program as Windows only had the options ntfc and exfat. I first deleted all my files, then formatted and copied all my files back, then inserted back in phone and tried a backup. In the third party software, I don't it gave a option to split the partitions.
Am I the only one having issues with creating and restoring backups on the external SD or ate others having the same issues?
Anyone else having issues backing up and restoring to the external sd card??
I'm just wondering when I was on the stock rom (with twrp recovery), I never had a issues backing up and restoring to the external sd card. Seems like this might be rom related, don't know, just a guess.
Also, are there any other recoveries that work with the G3, since it appears that twrp still has bugs.
I'm guessing not.
Pull your SD card out, or just make it backup to internal just to rule out TWRP.
Then maybe try a smaller card to make sure it's not your phone, or the pins for the SD card.
If the smaller card works, then you know it's the 64g card. It it doesn't, then it's got to be your phone.

I just did a backup on my 32gb sd card. This card has not been formatted, its stock. It did do a backup but it took 40 minutes to do it. It appeared to get stuck on the last 1000 files when backing up data, the last 1000 files took over 15 minutes itself. I just did another backup, this time on my internal, it took only 5 minutes. How come its taking so long backing up to exernal, and thats with the 32gb card, still doesn't work on my 64gb card. Is anyone else have issues with backing up on a 64gb card?? I would like to know if i am a isolated issue or if others are having the same issues.
Try using Partition Master to format the 64GB card as FAT32, instead of exFAT.
