MicroSD will not save anything correctly since partition - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. My SD card won't save anything correctly (pictures, apks, Roms, etc.) since it was partitioned. The oddest thing is that some things will save correctly, but very few. Everything will save, but when you try to open something, the phone says it can't be opened. When I rooted my Motorola Atrix 4g, it forced me to partition my SD card. I don't know anything about modding and I just followed online instructions to root my phone. I don't remember exactly what was going on, but my phone wouldn't work until I partitioned. I used ROM manager to partition. Anyway, I was thinking about formatting my card, but I'm afraid my phone won't work without the car being partitioned. So, I was also thinking about partitioning again. What should I do, and why is the card acting this way?

Well if you don't have any important data on the card then you could try to format it (maybe with a computer). How did you partition the card (I mean 1 partition, or more)?

I'm sorry. I really have no knowledge about these things, but I assume it has 1 partition. I partitioned it with ROM manager to make a space for apps. Which I don't use and never have, so I don't know why it forced me to do it.

So, I'm going to format the card. I need it for my Atrix HD, which has NO space on it. Why is my Atrix 4G a much better phone than my Atrix
HD? It had tons more space and it is much quicker. But the HD has a bigger HD screen that looks awesome and that's why I prefer using it. I can't wait to get a new phone so I can root the HD and use the SD card for apps. Sorry. I went on a rant. Anyway, if anybody knows anything about the partitioning issue let me know. Thanks.

[Q] Move SD Card to New Phone Question

Currently I have a Droid Eris, and I've been using the SD card that came with it. If I get a different phone, in this case a Droid 2, that doesn't have an SD card, is it okay to just put the card from my Eris in the new phone? If not, what is the precautions and procedures do I need to take?
Thanks in advance.
I've tried Googleing this, and also searching XDA. I can't seem to find a definitive answer, but it seems like nothing bad would happen. Can anyone confirm?
Nothing bad should happen. You didn't mention what ROM you are using or if you're even rooted, but the only reason I mention this is if you are using a Froyo-based ROM and had moved some Apps2SD, then you might want to delete the "android_secure" folder which would contain those apps since that might confuse the Droid 2, which I assume runs or OTA updates to Froyo itself.
It doesn't sound like you've ever repartitioned your SD card, either, for instance with an Ext3 partition for 2.1-style Apps2SD use, but again, Froyo on any phone wouldn't like this AFAIK, unless you had it formatted a particular way.
If you never did anything fancy to your SD card like repartitioning or moving apps to your SD card, then you should have no problem whatsoever.
No matter what the case, nothing should cause any actual damage to either the new phone or the SD card. You could always back up your SD card's contents to your computer just to be safe, though. A good idea every once in a while no matter what.
I'm running KaosFroyo, and I do have some apps on the SD card. I planned on moving the apps back over to the phone, but I'll delete that folder as well. Thanks.

Internal Storage showing up as SDcard... What's going on?

I don't have an SD card in my phone, but when I go to an app like Aldiko(book reader) and try to access a file, I'm able to explore higher level directories than normal. When I first browse for a file I'm in the area that my phone calls internal storage, but if I go one level higher I see that its actually mounted under the name SD card... What's going on? Why does this app see it as an SD card and why is it mounted as an SD card?
just like the samsung galaxy s phones, the 16gb internal storage is considered 'sdcard' to the system. your external sd is called sd-ext i believe
Wait, so if a tutorial says something will be written to your SD card, should you assume internal storage if you don't have one and external if you do have one? I was looking at the tutorial here: [it won't let me post the link because I'm a new user... google this and its the first result: "how to fully backup and restore your android"]
and it said "This image will be written to your SD card which you are then free to copy around and back up on your computer."
well. this phone isnt like a lot of other android phones. like the galaxy S line, there is more onboard storage than what prior phones had. a lot of the older phones came with 512mb/1gb/2gb/4gb of onboard storage that the OS resided on, and you had to add an sdcard to give yourself enough storage for music/pictures/backups/etc
i suspect you will see a lot more of this same thing in the future as flash memory gets cheaper and cheaper, and manufacturers begin putting more and more storage on board.
as for your link, you do realize that the atrix isnt like ANY of those other phones listed as examples?
nandroids dont work quite the same with the atrix

I did not realize that. I'm an expert with apple but a n00b with android. So you're saying I shouldn't use that guide? Any other suggestions to backup then?

you cannot flash CWM recovery on the atrix like you can a lot of other devices (for which that article was written for)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019143
I'm having some trouble with that. I'm going to continue with this question in this thread even though the topics changed, let me know if you want me to make a new thread.
The first thing I did after installing the CWM recovery for the atrix app was click the install recovery button. It said install successful. I assume this made a backup image of my phone's ROM. Then I clicked recovery mode and I tried booting holding the down key and selecting fastboot. I also tried some other options like RSD... I think I'm missing something though because the screen just got stuck on the "starting fastboot" line and I had to remove the battery each time it gets stuck to reboot it.

Help! Damaged (internal?) SD card

I installed MIUI on my girlfriend's fascinate last night and this morning she's just told me her phone has a notification for a damaged SD card... I told her to try unmounting/removing it and the problem persists making me believe it's the internal card.
Can anyone point me in the correct direction to fix this? I'd like to recover as many of the files from the phone before wiping it if possible.
Thanks!
First thing you should do to confirm whether it's internal or not is to just try swapping the MicroSD with another. I really don't know for sure, but I don't think it would tell you that you have a damaged SD card if it's talking about the internal storage.
Do you have a card reader for your PC? Plug it into that and see if it works. If it detects it, try running a chkdsk on it. If something got corrupted on it somehow, that should take care of it. You shouldn't have to format it.
She's currently at her family's house (we're in college... don't live on our own ) but I'll try that later. She tried putting her microSD in her brother's phone and both phones displayed a damaged memory card notification, which makes me think it may be both.
Also, she's got cwm red, not orange. Could that be the issue? If so, how do I switch to orange?

If the same MicroSD gave a damaged message in another phone, it's almost certainly the MicroSD.
I know there's some issue with Gingerbread ROMs corrupting SD cards. I thought it didn't apply to CM7 or MIUI, but I'm not totally sure. CWM shouldn't have anything to do with it, though. It's odd that she has red CWM, though. How does she enter recovery?
I'd expect chkdsk to handle it. Once you've got access to it and a PC, open the command prompt, and try "chkdsk x: /f /x", where x is the drive letter for the card.
I would think you could just look at the SD card & phone storage section in Settings. Damaged memory card usually appears as not present.
The SD doesn't show up in the mounts and storage, yes. Any idea how to recover those files?
Does the internal memory show up?
From my experience, once it's corrupted it can't be used again. There are several programs that may help you recover files on the card but you probably will not be able to use the card again unless you can get it formatted on something else, ie camera.

If you have a card reader on a PC there's a program called Recuva that may be able to recover pics, video, etc.
try formatting it

Really frustrated... Major Problems with SD Card

So,
My SD card isn't recognized on the phone - saying it's unavailable, and my computer says it needs to be formatted.
I can't install any app, the phone just soft resets. So it's all due to my SD Card.
I can't format it because I have so much stuff on it - from pictures, to files, to everything. Anyone know how to fix it so I can at least get my stuff off it?
This is really not good if I have to format it...
I have no Idea how to help you, but what up bro didn't know you had the gs2 i remember you for the ole captivate forums lol.
You have to format it then use a recovery program.
My 2 suggestions, which I went through the same issue and got 95% of my stuff...
1. iCare Data
2. Recuva

What do you mean you can't format it? What stops you from doing so?
Can you first, xfer all your personal stuff to other place/space/computer/....., then format it and move those stuff back in when done?
Why can't you do that?

The reason why you can't transfer it is because he needs to format it so its properly read.
I think his uSD can't be read properly in his phone, he didn't say it can't be read in his computer.
What is a Samsung Captivate Galaxy S II?

If thats the case, then he should copy all existing data to his computer, format, then recopy everything back over...
But he did say in his OP that the computer said it needed to be formatted. So that tells me that his computer can see the card, but cant access it.
Use Recuva or testdisk (google is your friend).
testdisk works great for SD cards and USB devices. The issue will be that it will see the file, but not the filename, so it will numerically name them. small price to pay to get your info back from a would-be dead SD card..

Yea thats why I like iCaredata (find it how you want to) but it keeps folder structure and other things so its easier to track your files.
Maybe try mounting the SD in CWM? I used this when the SD contents wouldn't show after a bad flash.

Maybe your sd card is defective (can't be ruled out). Have you tried another sd card?

Only problem I've ever encountered is the picture size isn't the same as the original. Always smaller.
Just used iCaredata and it worked like a champ.
Thanks, Admin can close.

[Q] Interesting SD card issues. Can you help?

I just got a replacement LTE not that long ago and decided to give custom roms a go. I used RegawMOD and then flashed SuperLTE rom. I noticed that it was taking a while to pull my music and pictures in from my SD card into Gallery and Music apps. I also went to change my ringtone and my custom tones weren't in the chooser. I thought that it was weird because I gave it plenty of time. I went into ESFileExplorer and can access all of my stuff on the card, but it still wouldn't show up in their respective apps! I thought maybe it needed another cleaning, so i booted into recovery, did factory reset, wiped cache and dalvik cache, rebooted to system... still same problem. The one thing I DID notice this time was that the pictures that were on my external SD card in the DCIM folder showed up in the "All Photos" album in the Gallery, but not in their separate folders. I figured maybe it was a ROM problem, searched the forum and saw 1 other person with the same issue. Everyone was trying to help him, but everything suggested he tried and it didn't work. I then flashed MeanROM hoping to have better luck. SUPER CLEANED it by doing all the wipes twice before I flashed MeanROM.... SAME PROBLEM! People in that forum were trying to help me as well, but everything they suggested, I did, still didn't work. One thing suggested that I tried was to back up, format, and restore my SD card. That actually worked - but only for making a couple of my photo albums show up (not all of them), but my music still won't pull into any music apps and my ringtones aren't in my settings! I'm going craaaaazy! It clearly isn't a ROM problem, what could it be??!!
Might be the phone itself.
Swyped on my EVO LTE
Did u try moving all files to computer then mount sd in twrp then reformat? Is it internal sd or external sd2? If you got a cheap sd card off eBay from China it could be that. U try other sd cards to make sure it is the phone?
Try to fix permissions in TWRP. I had the same problem only some pics and no music was showing up in their apps. I fixed permissions and rebooted to everything working fine.

I guess I don't know what exactly the steps are to mount it in twrp and reformat. I haven't tried this yet. Can you be a little more specific on the exact steps? Thank you!! I want to try this!! I see where you go in to mount, but there are a bunch of boxes, some checked, some not...
Its a SanDisc card and I've tried 2 different cards to no avail

If u have tried different cards then I'm not sure that would help. Did you try fix permissions like the second post said? Try that first since it is easier and less time consuming. I've never had to reformat a sd card before, so I don't know exact steps. It's pretty straightforward, just back-up the contents of the card on your computer first.
To reformat on windows you right click on the storage card from computer in start-up menu. Should give warning about erasing everything, but if you've backed up then no worries.

Oh, my bad. I thought there might be some way that would be different by doing it through TWRP. I've already wiped and reformatted the card. I'm pretty sure something happened due to the way the bootloader was unlocked or with TWRP or something. Nobody seems to know why it would happen, but I'm not the only one it's happened to. It's really annoying!!! I tried fixing permissions like 15 times... Nothing is working. Thanks for trying!
Don't know if this will work because of everything else you've tried, but you can give this a shot.
