Pull out your battery and CONFIRM what is says for the model number of your phone. This will confirm or deny that you have the i777 Samsung Galaxy S2.
IF it has a model number of i727 which is also, kind of, sort of, a ATT samsung galaxy s2 but is considered the " Skyrocket". So PLEASE before going any further check it out before you get flamed here if you get help and you don't have the i777.

I was on stock ICS. I wanted to root.
Then i flashed the siyah kernel, after that the phone booted with just samsung logo
I tried flashing a stock rom but it fails, it just halts. However installing a kernel through odin is successful.
Even kies fails to install the stock rom, it downloads the firmware but nothing installs.

Trying to gain root via installing another custom kernel is NOT the way to go, in fact, it's not the right way and AFAIK, it's not gonna work.
So, it was stock ICS and you want to .......... what? just root? or intend to install a custom firmware?
Either case,
FIRSTLY, rooting. Read the stickies, there are links to instructions how to root (per ROM version)
SECONDLY, in order to install custom firmware easily, strongly recommend installing CwMR first. HOW?
a. make sure it's rooted.
b. install Mobile Odin
c. flash custom kernel which includes CwMR. Be careful of flashing GB kernel to GB firmware and so on.
So go back, a question for you.
How did you manage to install Siyah kernel first place?

Siyah kernel was in tar format can be installed in desktop odin. Am I wrong?
the bottom line is now I cant flash any rom through odin or kies. It just hangs at the start. I am able to install stand alone stock kernels through odin without any problems. I guess I am clear aout what I am talking. Help appreciated. Thanks

It turned out to be bad cable issue.
I brought a new micro USB cable and the rom flashed nicely
May be if kernel flash ok but not rom, one needs to change the cable.

Weird problem upgrading to Stock ICS

Hi guys,
1. I have a problem of flashing stock ICS straight from a 2.3.4 Checkrom V4
2. I used ODIN and flashed UK based ICS (I9100XWLPT) and everything when well, i could start and setup as per normal, thing is, it is UNROOTED.
3. So i flashed CF-ROOT (CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LQ5-v5.6-CWM5.zip) to I9100XWLPT as this is the closest and the fact that the ICS Stock firmware modem is (Modem: XXLQ6) via Odin (Tar file in PDA and Flash)
4. Now, i could not boot the phone, it goes to the normal startup (the one with yellow triangle) and then it goes blank forever. I tried reflash kernel, i tried factory reset and everything and it goes blank.
5. So i flash the recovery package, i tried flashing bootloader first, it tried flashing kernel first then flash the ics recovery package, but everytime when i flash my Odin will hang/Not Responding. I tried factory reset, i tried taking out batt and leave for minutes and reflash again but still, my ODIN hang.
6. So i restore via nandroid backup, and then tried to reflash stock firmware as i did initially but still, ODIN hang.
7. So i thought maybe i could flash to 2.3.6 Checkrom V6 but still, when i tried to flash the ICS Firmware, my odin will hang.
Please help me guys on what should i do, i truly apologize for the long post and i might sound confusing but i hope you could advice me on what to do. I really want to use ICS but now still stuck on Checkrom V6 2.3.6 Android.
Ok you have a sound nandroid back up that's good. Try this its what I used to go to stock LPT. Flash it through PDA in odin like before then root with Galaxian kernel again through PDA in odin. It's specific for 4.0.4 ROMs. Alternatively there are pre- rooted, modified stock ROMs in the android development forum. All the best.

which version of odin are you using. the newer 3.0.4 or the older version?
4.0.4 roms work with odin 3.0.4 not old er versions.

Hi, i have found the SOLUTION
If the SGS2 is from Gingerbread or to be exact, from Checkrom V6 and below.
I have to flash rom from Hydяa-H²o first and then i can move on to any other ICS ROM without having te flash brick issue.
e.g: If i flash Resurrection Remix to Checkrom V6, i will facing the Flash Brick issue and the only solution to this is to restore your nandroid backup. Try everything recovery etc etc, would not work.
I have to flash Hydra Rom first to Checkrm V6 and then moved to Resurrection Remix. Thats the only workable way for now.
I can confirmed this as i tried this on 3 of my friend Samsung Galaxy S2. As the explanation for this, i did not know but it works.
Just for the record, you flashed the wrong kernel version.
You're supposed to look at kernel version, not baseband!

Flash a stock Rom via Odin. Wait till your phone boots up. Go back to Odin install a custom kernel (i recommend siyah kernel). Backup your stock Rom, then install a custom Rom. There is a lot of tutorials to tell you exactly how to do this process. If you need help at any point of this process just send me a message and I will give you a detailed walkthrough. You should be fine though!!

How about from the intratech's thread? And is the Odin flash failing risk big with the situation I have right now?
I've used odin A LOT and never had a problem. I only ever use the PDA section and never touch anything else because I don't understand it. I can't comment on intratechs thread as I've never used his software. Any custom ROMs are normally flashed via CWM.

[Q] Step by step rooting and rom switching for my S2?

Hello all I have looked all over for information on how to simply install CWM and get some clean JellyBean running on my S2 but so far I have been unable to find somthing that will explain in detail on going about doing this. A few days ago I bricked a S2, and after rescuing it with a UK orange rom I was able to exchange it for a clean one again (They would send the Orange one back to factory).
But i'm still unsure how to proceed now.
How do I know if my S2 is romable? I have ICS running on it atm, 4.04, Baseband version I9100BOLP7, Kernel version 3.0.15-1056084, Build number IMM76D.BOLPM.
Thanks a lot!
Since I did not find CF Root for your ROM either you can:
1. Flash a ROM having CF root. Then root as given in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399. This method is suggested if you want to stay on stock kernel and don't want to try custom kernel.
2. You can also flash the Odin version of Siyah kernel. Find it from the download link from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555259. The latest version is 4.1.5. The method of flashing through Odin is given in the CF root thread.
I recommend 2nd method as its straight forward and siyah is a good kernel.

u should not do anything with the recovery of the stock kernel of v4.0.4 like doing any wipes or backup etc as it might brick ur phone.
so to be on the safer side u can flash some custom kernels like 'Siyah kernel' thro odin, so that it replaces the stock recovery and also the custom kernels are safe from 'Brick bug' issue

yes u will be safe with siyah (ensure u flash the .tar extension file of v4.1.5 from ODIN) kernel.
you can use 'triangle away' app to get rid of yellow triangle.
and u will be able to install cm10 for sure
Maybe not the latest version of CM10. From what I've read, there are some changes made in the latest iteration of cm10 to sort out some issues in jellybean which requires some change in the kernel code and hasnt been implemented in siyah yet. So the latest cm10 ROM so far only runs on the cm kernel. It wont boot with siyah. Wont harm the phone in any way, but mihht give you a fright if you see it isnt booting. You could try some other custom ROMs in the mean time.. most of which are derived from CM10 itself.
I could be wrong though..so you could confirm it. Still..just to be safe, ya know?

Little help please

Could do with a little advise. I have rooted in the past, most recently my HTC desire. I used to flash roms all the time.
Anyway I have decided to root my s2 and I am having problems. I root view odien and everything goes fine but when it reboots everything is the same and have no root access? any ideas?
If it helps I did the manual ics update a while back, don't know if that has anything to do with it?
Thanks

You're not really explaining the steps you took to root. Flashing a CF-Root kernel through Odin would usually do the job if you want to maintain stock ROM. Otherwise, flashing a custom ROM would also give you root access as most ROMs come with it built in.
I strongly suggest you explain further what steps you took to flash. Because root view odien doesn't say much and is quite confusing.

You should know by now to post the details about your phone.
I could say flash siyah-s2-v4.1.5 via odin(which gives root/perm cwm and safe kernel).
But I wont til you post the details.....

It has always been my preference to root through a custom kernel... If you do decide to go this way, download siyah v4.1.5 and flash it through the PDA section of odin.
Also, as theunderling said, please post your phone details before flashing.
Flashing this kernel will grant you root + permanent CWM

If you followed this tutorial you are already rooted on 4.0.3. If you want to upgrade to 4.0.4 I recommend to flash a stock 4.0.4 via odin then Cf-root (or other prerooted) kernel to have root, custom CWM recovery and be safe from brick bug. Then flash desired custom rom. Yes, custom roms come usually with root.

No you don't. Flash the TAR ( NOT zip.) version of siyah or dorimanx kernel via Odin. You don't need CWM for this. Once you install one of these custom kernels you will have root and CWM and can then install a ROM and whatever else you want via CWM.

Theunderling is not so much patient for new members
It happens everytime you flash custom software to your phone via PC odin.
Use Triangle Away app from Google Play store to remove it. However read carefully the app instructions before you use it.

OK thanks everyone for your help.

[Q] Assistance needed with first root of SG2 i9100

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB
I downloaded
ODIN 1.85
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LQB-v5.6-CWM5
I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.
if I flash with the CF LBQ, what is my next step?

your phone will be rooted and u can then choose to install a custom kernel like Siyah v 4.1.5 on ur phone which gives u the latest CWM recovery thro which u can install any custom rom of ur choice(meant for i9100 though) on ur phone
Thank you very much!
If my questions seemed noobish, its because I want to be very sure. It my first expensive phone.
a question though, When samsung upgrades us to JB, will I be able to update it?

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

So essentially I need to revert to 4.04 stock to upgrade? How do I do that?

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps
Ohhhhhh. I get it. Flash using CF, or CM 10, use triangle app to remove warning triangle and if I need to unroot, flash with 4.04 (my region) using odin? Sound pretty simple. Am I missing any steps?

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..
Hi everyone! I just rooted my phone and it was sooo easy.
Thank you so much. Your advice and help definitely made it much easier than I though.
Yeah, welcome to the rooted world where you can explore more with your phone
