[Q] Step by step rooting and rom switching for my S2? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all I have looked all over for information on how to simply install CWM and get some clean JellyBean running on my S2 but so far I have been unable to find somthing that will explain in detail on going about doing this. A few days ago I bricked a S2, and after rescuing it with a UK orange rom I was able to exchange it for a clean one again (They would send the Orange one back to factory).
But i'm still unsure how to proceed now.
How do I know if my S2 is romable? I have ICS running on it atm, 4.04, Baseband version I9100BOLP7, Kernel version 3.0.15-1056084, Build number IMM76D.BOLPM.
Thanks a lot!

Since I did not find CF Root for your ROM either you can:
1. Flash a ROM having CF root. Then root as given in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399. This method is suggested if you want to stay on stock kernel and don't want to try custom kernel.
2. You can also flash the Odin version of Siyah kernel. Find it from the download link from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555259. The latest version is 4.1.5. The method of flashing through Odin is given in the CF root thread.
I recommend 2nd method as its straight forward and siyah is a good kernel.

And this is the "safest" way to get custom roms? And from what I got this version is brick bug safe?
Thanks for the info

NO, all android ICS v4.0.4 stock roms do have the Brick bug that comes along with there Krenel's ma8
hence u also have it, but fear not as long as u dont do anything silly with ur stock recovery to hardbrick ur phone

u should not do anything with the recovery of the stock kernel of v4.0.4 like doing any wipes or backup etc as it might brick ur phone.
so to be on the safer side u can flash some custom kernels like 'Siyah kernel' thro odin, so that it replaces the stock recovery and also the custom kernels are safe from 'Brick bug' issue

Your very helpful as I had trouble understanding what should and should not be done. So if I just flash Siyah through Odin, ill be relativity safe? Ill still get the yellow warning sign but for the rest everything will work, and then ill be able to flash a custom rom like CM10?
Thanks a lot

yes u will be safe with siyah (ensure u flash the .tar extension file of v4.1.5 from ODIN) kernel.
you can use 'triangle away' app to get rid of yellow triangle.
and u will be able to install cm10 for sure

Maybe not the latest version of CM10. From what I've read, there are some changes made in the latest iteration of cm10 to sort out some issues in jellybean which requires some change in the kernel code and hasnt been implemented in siyah yet. So the latest cm10 ROM so far only runs on the cm kernel. It wont boot with siyah. Wont harm the phone in any way, but mihht give you a fright if you see it isnt booting. You could try some other custom ROMs in the mean time.. most of which are derived from CM10 itself.
I could be wrong though..so you could confirm it. Still..just to be safe, ya know?

No it still gives the same message, I'm wondering if its something to do with my usb port as the last phone came in over COM6.
Thanks though!

I don't know.. but does the Odin version matters? I use v1.8.5.
I really don't understand why Odin will give an error. Maybe you can attach the screen shot of Odin after you press start.

What firmware was you using when this happened. You've sounds like it's recoverable. If download mode is all you can get your probably get best results by downloading official firmware from Sam firmware and extracting it then flashing the zip file in odin via PDA section. All the best.

Flash a stock Rom via Odin. Wait till your phone boots up. Go back to Odin install a custom kernel (i recommend siyah kernel). Backup your stock Rom, then install a custom Rom. There is a lot of tutorials to tell you exactly how to do this process. If you need help at any point of this process just send me a message and I will give you a detailed walkthrough. You should be fine though!!

How about from the intratech's thread? And is the Odin flash failing risk big with the situation I have right now?
I've used odin A LOT and never had a problem. I only ever use the PDA section and never touch anything else because I don't understand it. I can't comment on intratechs thread as I've never used his software. Any custom ROMs are normally flashed via CWM.

Pull out your battery and CONFIRM what is says for the model number of your phone. This will confirm or deny that you have the i777 Samsung Galaxy S2.
IF it has a model number of i727 which is also, kind of, sort of, a ATT samsung galaxy s2 but is considered the " Skyrocket". So PLEASE before going any further check it out before you get flamed here if you get help and you don't have the i777.

Then i flashed the siyah kernel, after that the phone booted with just samsung logo
I tried flashing a stock rom but it fails, it just halts. However installing a kernel through odin is successful.
Even kies fails to install the stock rom, it downloads the firmware but nothing installs.

Trying to gain root via installing another custom kernel is NOT the way to go, in fact, it's not the right way and AFAIK, it's not gonna work.
So, it was stock ICS and you want to .......... what? just root? or intend to install a custom firmware?
Either case,
FIRSTLY, rooting. Read the stickies, there are links to instructions how to root (per ROM version)
SECONDLY, in order to install custom firmware easily, strongly recommend installing CwMR first. HOW?
a. make sure it's rooted.
b. install Mobile Odin
c. flash custom kernel which includes CwMR. Be careful of flashing GB kernel to GB firmware and so on.
So go back, a question for you.
How did you manage to install Siyah kernel first place?

Little help please

Could do with a little advise. I have rooted in the past, most recently my HTC desire. I used to flash roms all the time.
Anyway I have decided to root my s2 and I am having problems. I root view odien and everything goes fine but when it reboots everything is the same and have no root access? any ideas?
If it helps I did the manual ics update a while back, don't know if that has anything to do with it?
Thanks

You're not really explaining the steps you took to root. Flashing a CF-Root kernel through Odin would usually do the job if you want to maintain stock ROM. Otherwise, flashing a custom ROM would also give you root access as most ROMs come with it built in.
I strongly suggest you explain further what steps you took to flash. Because root view odien doesn't say much and is quite confusing.

You should know by now to post the details about your phone.
I could say flash siyah-s2-v4.1.5 via odin(which gives root/perm cwm and safe kernel).
But I wont til you post the details.....

It has always been my preference to root through a custom kernel... If you do decide to go this way, download siyah v4.1.5 and flash it through the PDA section of odin.
Also, as theunderling said, please post your phone details before flashing.
Flashing this kernel will grant you root + permanent CWM

Do as theunderling and poroto mentioned. Download the TAR version of siyah v4.1.5 from www.gokhanmoral.com and install it via Odin the same way as mentioned in the tutorial link you posted. (Instead of cf-root, use siyah) Do this and you will have root. Then you can flash a custom ROM.

If you followed this tutorial you are already rooted on 4.0.3. If you want to upgrade to 4.0.4 I recommend to flash a stock 4.0.4 via odin then Cf-root (or other prerooted) kernel to have root, custom CWM recovery and be safe from brick bug. Then flash desired custom rom. Yes, custom roms come usually with root.

No you don't. Flash the TAR ( NOT zip.) version of siyah or dorimanx kernel via Odin. You don't need CWM for this. Once you install one of these custom kernels you will have root and CWM and can then install a ROM and whatever else you want via CWM.

It happens everytime you flash custom software to your phone via PC odin.
Use Triangle Away app from Google Play store to remove it. However read carefully the app instructions before you use it.

[Q] brick bug

Hi .. i originally rooted my phone using " zirggles " ? it was something on you tube i found ! well it worked untill my s2 updated to 4.0.4 then i lost part of my root. i still have titanium back up ... but if i run root checker it says i don't have proper root. and some apps i cant download. i have checked and i do have an insane chip ! i want to root my phone properly again, but i know with this chip its risky. would it be ok to flash 4.0.3 firmware .. would this get rid of the brick bug ? if so is there somewhere i can download the firmware ? im curently on XXLQ6 or is there another way of rooting my phone properly again ? i have super user on the phone but it says outdated binary. please be understanding as i only joined yesterday and i am a total noob to this all

4.0.3 firmware is safe, the issue exists only in stock 4.0.4 ICS and if you are on 4.0.4 ICS don't perform any type of wipe, reset etc... Flash 4.0.3 firmware or lower version's like gingerbread or any custom rom with custom kernels, also custom kernels for 4.0.4 version's are safe theoretically but i still wont recommend it because I have seen people brick their phone from CWM, so the problem is with the kernel which has eMMc cap erase command, most custom kernels don't have it, but be warned an old Siyah kernel has it so use the newest one.
For the sake of safety i recommend that you flash 4.0.3 via Odin.

For the sake of safety i recommend that you flash 4.0.3 via Odin.

ok thanks for the advice .. if i was to use a Siyah kernel, which one would you suggest ? would i have to use odin to do this ? i have CWM on my phone, so could i do it from the phone rather than odin ? if i can, would i need to put the new kernel on the external SD card ?
thanks a million

dwnld the tar file of siyah v4.1.5 (for galaxy S2) and flash the same using 'Odin', since its the best way ma8
Latest Siyah 5.0.1 should not be a problem as well. Using it for a week now.

Use the latest Siyah its pretty amazing, i consider Odin as the safest method, even though if you can obtain Siyah as a zip file you can do it via CWM which is also a pretty safe and easy method for noobs, if you downloaded a tar flash via Odin or Mobile Odin.

Upgrading from 4.0.4.to 4.1.2

Hi I have a question.
My friend has this Galaxy S2(I9100) with stock 4.0.4 ROM and after seeing my phone with Jelly Bean official from Samsung he wants to update hired phone too.
But since the 4.0.4 has that brick bug or so he is afraid to flash it through Odin.
Also can he flash the new 4.1.2 firmware without wiping. Will all his apps be there and is it recommended top do it that way.
Thanks all.

New official jb will not wipe your data. I came from ics too (cm10.1 > ics > jb)

Check got brickbug app from playstore first.
If it is sane, flash it thru odin / mobile odin.
If it isn't, flash siyah and then flash 4.1.2.
I am in the same position but I have the insane chip. When I read the Siyah post the first thing it says is that it can only be used on JB not ics so is it safe to flash it on ics 4.0.4 before flashing 4.1.2 via odin as it says above?
Thanks
Jez

Dude, it doesnt make a single difference if he has the sane chip or not and flashing Siyah before flashing his rom via ODIN is completely and utterley pointless since its replaced when flashing via odin. The brickbug is part of stock recovery and since he wont be entering 4.0.4 recovery at any point and flashing via ODIN he has no need to worry about it.

Ignore what was said earlier.
If you want to flash without wiping and keep apps/appdata then simply....
Reboot into download mode
Flash stock rom (.md5 or .tar)
Reboot into download again and flash Siyah v6 beta4 or above
You have no need to worry about brickbug. Only time it would affect you is if you was booting into stock 4.0.4 recovery and you have no need to do that at all.

Thanks for the information. Presumably I don't have to do the last step unless I want Siyah kernel.

Its not just about having the kernel its also about having root and cwm recovery.
I flashed Siyah kernel first than the XWLS8 4.1.2 all through Odin and everything is working as it should.
Thanks for the infos.

Didn't you noticed that lots of people just love wipping data?
You gotta lay it out for them, so they can play it safe. I know you don't enjoy people bricking their devices.
You really need to remember when you first started flashing phones...and be more emphatic.
Bricking fear..is motivation here.
