I try to search the answer for these questions on my own, but I cannot find the answer. So, I need your help.
1. If I want to flash Faux kernel with a custom ICS ROM, I must use "Amaze ICS kernel" only right? And according to description over the kernel, Faux said that "Ice Cream Sandwich (S-OFF ONLY)", that means I need S-off right? And I wonder that do the "Amaze GB kernel" will compatible for a custom ICS ROM?
2. I want to use the "Search Button" in Speed ROM, thus I must push GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. But I cannot find the GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk, can anyone tell me where I can find the file? And, do any version of the file suitable for ICS 4.0.4?
Thank you very much for your answer
And I'm so sorry if my poor English is bothering you :crying:

Use 4ext recovery turn on the smartflash and then flash the kernel...regarding the google search box...pull the apk from stock rom or any custom rom that dont use the google now...and now dont flash the gb kernel in ur ics rom...u probly will end up in a bootloop

What Perry said however I don't think you have to tinker around with Google now (Googlequicksearchbox) because in the latest speedrom versions that has already been incorporated.
Edit: just noticed the search button bug in speed ROM. To get it to work download the googlenow flashable zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359951&page=181 (thanks to sportstar).
Instructions:
1. Delete GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk from /system/app (via root explorer or any file explorer that allows you to get into root directory)
2. Flash Zip via recovery
That should work
There are other ways I think this is the easiest
Thank you very much for your answer. I will follow your instruction

OK. I have searched and searched. And I cannot post in Development forum yet. My i9100 was rooted using CFRoot. That installed an app called CWM. It is not the same as ROM Manager found in the market. Since then I have wiped and installed Cognition S2 rom and I do not have the CWM.apk that came with CFRoot. Looked all over online and all I keep getting pointed to is the CFRoot thread or threads talking about Rom Manager. Can someone link me to / upload the CWM that comes with CFRoot?

Cognition S2 doesnt come with CF-Root kernel. To get the CWM app back you need to flash the CF-root kernel.
thanks for the link it will be useful
I have installed BAtista70 with angelom kernel
can I use this app to reflash CF root kernel or odin as the first time i rooted my phone ?
hey guys does anyone have a mirror for this ?? i don't want to get this just off of any site i want to make sure it's the real deal... we should be very careful with these apps.
Attached is CWM Manager flashable zip (please change the ext. PDF to Zip - I changed it due to upload policy here)
and check wheather this one is flashable for your ROM, this was downloaded from Checkrom Kitchen for the FW version XWLA4
MD5 Checksum of the zip : eefeb8e1e57e2c76dadbd9aa4e53773b
thanks
If you had reflashed the cfroot kernel from chainfires post, it would have put cwm manager on there for you mate.

I meant the Policy here in my workplace not XDA, XDA allows me to upload zip files
i'm staying with the stock rom (for now @ least until i figure out why i loose wifi), and entropy's DD for kernel...as otherwise my wifi goes bye bye... i just updated the modem to the uckk6 or uchk6, and i'm getting astonishing results with that modem in the chicagoland area... and i didn't loose wifi... now i tried to upgrade to the latest android version but then the wifi goes bye bye again.
p.s. i used entropy's recovery to stock quite a few times as i've used something from another forums and wifi bye bye (that same thing is posted on xda-dev as a tutorial)... so this was the only way to fix it that worked... and for some reason the only kernel that doesn't disable wifi is entropy's Daily Driver. anyways so i'm not sure why i didn't get the CMW.apk installed on my galaxy s2. hopefully this one will work. I think it's just my n00bness to custom roms that makes the WiFi disappear, hopefully i will get some more knowledge soon.
so basically my system now looks like this:
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband: i777UCKK6
Kernel: 2.6.35.7
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UCKH7
*** [ just the modem changed. when i go to latest android version i loose wifi ] * signatures: disabled in CMW
I also found another link for CMW.apk on the forums (different section) but of course it uses multiupload and it's not working.
p.p.s. another n00b question. do you guys think it would be safe for me to use a rom or will it disable the wifi again ?... and which rom would you suggest, something like entropy512 is using stock rom that is scrubbed from b/s... or maybe a different one, but i don't want to loose wifi as i'm on 2GB limited plan and that goes fast without wifi...
any suggestions.
Sorry but I think I forgot to say thank you to all the people who replied.

First of all, this is the thread I'm referring to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233328
Am posting here because I don't have enough posts to reply to the thread. Really doesn't make sense that the forum requires 10 posts before I can reply there.
I'm really confused with all the links on the OP. The instructions aren't clear enough for a noob like me. Would appreciate any help here.
Basically I want the fastest/smoothest experience, so no TW for sure, and OC if possible. Am not really sure what deodex does for me so not sure if I need deodex or broodcomb...
So correct me if I'm wrong here.. Never done this before so I'm just picturing it in my head(getting my tab tomorrow so just wanna make sure I get things right) this is how I should do it..
1. I will need to download this and install through odin no matter what... Hmm what does CSC: CPW and XEU mean anyway?
Stock Rom [ODIN] special for XDA Members only ( CSC: CPW and XEU )
2. This is where I get lost. Do I choose between these 3? If yes, what's the differences between them? And where's broodcomb?
CWM KH7ROOT
Stock Deodexed Rom special for XDA Members only
CWM Rom by mabalito
3. Install the non tw update/ themes/etc..
4. where in all these do I fit in the installing of pershoot's kernel? Can OC be done only with pershoot kernel? Does 3G work with pershoot's kernel?
I appreciate any help you can give me. perhaps someone can do me a favour and post this up in the thread so that others can answer it.
Thanks
Ryan
any kind soul out there? I just need someone to help me copy paste my post over to the thread so that others can answer it.
I'm running the stock KH7 rom and it's much better then the KG9 that i had before.
As far as i know, there is no rom for p7500 that doesn't have Touchwiz. In that thread there is just a theme that looks like vanilla Honeycomb, so it doesn't give any performance boost.
Besically you need to install the stock KH7 first (using odin) and then install custom recovery if you want to root or use other modifications posted there.

I've got my tab now and have been messing with it for awhile without much success. I tried this...
1. reboot into cwm recovery
2. install deodexed stock rom via cwm
3. install cwm non-tw (from the thread)
and that resulted in a reboot-loop. So I can't go straight to cwm and have to install stock using ODIN first? okay help me out here a little, I'm still not sure what or where ODIN is...
okay I managed to get it to work after many tries. I used odin(which i think i didn't need to).. then installed the deodexed stock rom, pershoot's kernel, and non-tw..
Like i already said, first you need to install stock KH7 using odin.
Glad you got it working.
Going to flash S8 from stock, but I have no idea how to flash the kernel first.
Here's the link to the kernel thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1289460
I don't even know which link is the kernel itself, so I figure I better ask for help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281779
Thread moved from the Dev section to Q&A section.
My advice to the OP is that if you dont know how to flash, then dont. Read up first, and there is a lot to read... but its all good information on how to NOT mess up your device.
Also, if you want to flash S8, check out his site and his thread. Mikey steers his users in the right direction and makes a great rom.

I am using Mikey's instructions...I've flashed SVII before, but it didn't require flashing a kernel. I just want to make sure I do it right, but so far have not gotten an answer to this rather simple question. If anyone feels like spilling the beans before I just have to google it and go with some random's method, I'd like it alot.

entropy's post has several to choose from. they are all dated. the dates are the versioning (if you will)
how hard is it to click on one and download it? maybe the most recent one?
also, Entropy's kernels in that thread are for CWM, flashable just like any other CWM zip file
perhaps you need to read the FAQ thread and the HOW TO ROOT thread. this basic stuff is explained very well.
Latest Entropy kernel is DD_11132011.zip For future reference, the file names are based on the release date.

ok I DL'ed that zip file, and tried to flash w/ odin but it doesnt list it as a valid .tar file, and won't let me see it in the list of files I can choose from to flash
downloaded cwm, and flashed it with odin (the exact way I tried to flash the kernel, but this one actually shows up for use)
cwm is installed, moved the .zip to SD and installed with cwm, and nothing. Phone is not rooted and completely the same as before the install...
Not sure what to do at this point.....why didn't the kernel flash?
Should I just go ahead and try to flash the ROM?

From Stock:
1. Install Entropy512's kernel, found here.
2. Entropy512's kernel will give you root and CWM. Download Titanium Backup from the Market, and after allowing root permissions, back up your apps.

But I flashed the ROM with CWM anyway, and it worked. The phone is blazingly clean and fast and battery life has dramatically improved. Thanks everyone!
Hi,
I really want to get pure ics on my galaxy s II. Currently i'm on 2.3.4 gingerbread, unrooted.
I have asked a few questions about how to root my phone, and found a pretty straight forward tutorial, that users on xda have said is great to follow:
jayceooi.com/2011/08/04/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s2-with-cf-root-video
Rooting the phone appears to be pretty straight forward using the above tutorial, but finding the correct rom is what im not so sure about.
Users on xda have told me to use:
forum.xda developers.com/show....php?t=1075278 , to find a rom, specifically the ones just above ++++++ [Frankenstein Firmwares] +++++++
The only problem is, how do i know which one to use, i gather its going to be the 4.0.3 roms, but there are so many varients for different countries, which one is for me?
Does it matter which one i choose? Is there differences between them?
Thanks,
correct country
Hi, I'm not sure what other differences there are, but I know if you use the wrong countries Rom, the keyboard layout will be different to the one you are expecting, and as far as I know, there is no way of correcting this.
If you are going to use English as your main language then you can update to any rom as all the rooms support English primarily .
You can upgrade to the latest ics rom which is xwlp4, you can also find the matching cf root for the rom if you need root
#*posted on the move *#
Does that mean I would have to use another rooting method in order to use the new ics rom, or can I use the tutorial I posted previously?
Currently my kernel is XWKI4, and according to that tutorial I must find the insecure kernel that is closest to mine, what must be done differently?
Just flash any root kernel and your done. This will give root, su, super user, busy box and custom CWM Recovery for flashing, wiping, restore & backup etc.
Siyahkernel for example, can flash via Odin .tar or CWM recovery .zip
http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/04/06/siyahkernel-v3-0-2/
Use could also use Chainfire CF-root kernel also found in XDA.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I'm sorry I don't understand what your trying to say.
Are you saying I need to use another kernel for cfroot, which will be capable of booting the new ics rom
Kernels are specific to GB or ICS. Not interchangeable.
Sorry, gave you the wrong link for siyahkernel GB.
http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/03/19/siyahkernel-v2-6-14/
From there you can nandroid backup in cwm recovery and also backup and user apps and data with bavkup root apps such as; my backup root or titanium backup.
Then you can flash any custom ICS ROM of your choosing. Listening ROM is excellent with few bugs. It will come with a earlier version of siyahkernel, which has a few issues with wifi toggle, so suggest to flash the latest ICS kernel from the link I previously posted or from his thread here in XDA.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274
Edit; important to do a full system wipe when changing rom from a different Android base. Wipe system, data, cache, dalvik in cwm recovery.
Another method would be to factory reset, wipe cache in recovery and power off. Enter download mode (volume up+power) release only when on dl mode. Have lies drivers on PC,but shut down lies and use Odin to flash the .tar litening rom. Done
Many methods and choices
..

I did some read on this forum, so far the solution seems:
1) root; then
2) flash back to ginger-bread then factory reset; or
flash to another ICS
My question is, can I directly flash to another ICS rom? or in
other word, do I have to first go back to 2.3 and do factory reset?
According to the sticky post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
one can safely flash back to 2.3; if ICS is desired, use this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181
which however states it has the superbrick bug at the very top.
Does that means ICS is right not safe?
One more newbie question:
In the sticky posts, one talk about how to flash "binaries" without
increase flash count; another talk about flash custom "firmware"
and "ROM"; is there a post explaining the terminology of "binaries",
"firmware", "ROM"? I know there is a modem firmware, and kernel
in the android. is a post which could help me get my head clear
on this jargon?
Thanks a lot!

Even simpler would be to root using Exynos Abuse then use Mobile Odin to flash Siyah 4.3.3 zImage so you have CWM and then you can use it to flash stuff. Once you have siyah you can factory reset.

Yes it does. You just flash any JB rom using proper install instructions normally written in the OP. Try all the roms it's personal preference. They all have very few bugs

I installed the ExynosAbuse apk by chainfire with intention to root the device,
however, once installed, when go through the list of options, since the patch
option come first, then followed by root, so I thought - I know I am dumb on this - the
first is a super option which not only patch but also root, and the 2nd one only
root, so clicked "patch". Now I can not root my device. and there

Well if nothing else, maybe you can look at this as a learning opportunity. Remember to always read thoroughly and know what you're flashing / installing prior to doing it. Good luck , happy flashing.
