I just rooted my amaze but haven't installed any Roms, just left stock. Trying to tether my data to iPad but none of the apps in the market are working. Do any of the custom Roms support tethering my data without paying for it?

since you are on stock, this would be even easier.
there's two ways to share your phone's mobile data internet to you computer, and one way to share it to your other mobile devices.
the wifi method: use the stock wifi hotspot app, set it up as you like, turn it on, and turn your mobile data on.
Or
when you connect you phone to your PC via usb, assuming you already installed HTC Sync, your phone will ask you what do you want to do: there's just charge, storage...etc,
one of them is to share your phone's mobile internet to the computer via usb, and another is to share your computer's internet to your phone. Don't confuse between the two....read the titles carefully....
and when you shared your phone's mobile internet to your computer, you can use your computer to share the internet via WIFI.
the cons of this is that you can charge your phone while sharing internet, which is a great thing comparing sharing your phone's mobile internet via the phone's WIFI connection......

Hi guys!! I've just tried this app and it works great!
It can share your Defy's internet connection to your pc!
It's a real tethering not a simply MODEM Tethering, you will NOT pay extra cost to your Carrier!
I read about it here on xda:
Moto Tethering USB
See ya!
The default build-in USB tethering is working fine. Why would one need another 3rd party app to run?

As you can see from App description:
** Moto Tethering USB uses exactly the same data plan that is used for the on-phone Internet access like in the built-in browser or e-mail app or youtube application. No additional tethering fees.
The built-in function acts like a modem that can be intercepted by your Carrier to make you pay additional costs for your current connection!
cu,
I'm not sure if anything you say is correct. But I'm on unlimited data plan which also comes with voice, MMS, SMS and etc.. I've been using the build-in USB tethering as well and Wifi hotspot for over a year and none have any extra charges from my carrier.
I do USB tethering with my Laptop and Desktop. Share my Wifi Hotspot with my friend's phones and all working as it is..
I don't see the need of this 3rd party apps unless your phone doesn't have the default USB tethering and 3G Wifi Hotspot build-in.

hi...i usually connect my lg optimus 2x to PC with USB and use computer's internet connection (reverse USB teethering). but i want to know if its possible to force telephone that it thinks that it is connected to wi-fi, while using 3g data connection. i want use that especially when games want to download data over the wifi...
If your device is rooted, you could get a wireless hotspot app from the market, start the hotspot on your phone, then connect to it (connect your device to itself ).
I don't think you can connect to your own hotspot.

tried but its not working..i think that androids dont support wifi multitasking like iphones do,so they cant receiving and teethering connection at the same time..

Actually you can. I've said that before to other people who wanted to download gameloft data and for some other purposes which require wifi, and it worked.
I want to do this too.... but the Mobile Hotspot app on my phone turns off WiFi if it is one, and if I turn on Wifi while Mobile Hotpsot is on, it disables the Hotspot.
Any other solution ? An app maybe ? A tweak ?
what wifi hotspot app was used?.. and to the OP, how did you reverse tether via usb?

You can use this to reverse tether: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371345.
On my desire you can have activated only wirelles or only hotspot, i think the same wirelles adapter is used for it, so it wouldnt be possible.

How? I've been searching for a workaround to this for some time now.
Please tell me how...
I have a rooted Bionic, Eclipse ICS 4.0.4. I use FoxFi Full version for my hotspot. I need my phone to connect to the mobile hotspot it's currently transmitting. (I think that's what I need)
Why? I want an advanced ability to monitor who is using my mobile hotspot, using DroidSheep to monitor what they're using the connection for. Trouble is, DroidSheep (And al similar programs) only work if the phone (with the app) is actually connected to the wifi network. It won't work if it's the one transmitting the signal.

You just have one wifi Modul it can be a hot spot or it can be connected to a Router.
Both together isn't possible.
Else you could also use it as wifi repeater

That would be awesome, you could have a wifi router everywhere with you (as long as you don't forget to take the usb cable with you), just connect with the usb to a PC that has broadband, and then use the phone's wifi as a dongle.
I am currently in a situation that i would use something like that seeing that i have forgotten my dongle at home.
phone tether
There are a couple of different ways to tether your phone to your pc. One way is to use an app called PDA net, you can get your phone and computer setup through their website in about 2-3 minutes, super easy to use and you don't need to root your phone, the down side is unless you pay for the pro version all "https", secure sites, will only be accessible for a week. If you decide to root or have already rooted, you can download a number of different apps that give you the ability to use your phone as a hot spot without paying monthly to your provider.

=> use this app called FoxFi..its not on the google store..download it from internet..with this u can use the connection to tether via bluetooth in all devices..though, wi-fi routing works only in few..if it doesnt work..then first try this app to reverse tether(Reverse Tether build.2012.04.05.paid - torrents) and then use FoxFi..reply if it works or not..
AT&T detected my foxfi tethering and will now charge me for a 5g tethering package if I continue to use it. Greedy.... What does it matter if I tether? Bunch if nazis...

I do not have a tethering plan and I know about creating a new APN with the epc, but when I go into my Mobile Hotspot to do the tethering to my iPad, it says Error under the words Mobile Hotspot after I turn it on (I can still connect to the Internet on my phone with this error message)
My iPad can see my phones tethering connection under the WiFi connection choices and my phone shows me as being a connected User under users. I just cannot actually get on the Internet on my ipad with the Mobile Hotspot tether. I can get in the Internet still on my phone using the new APN.
Am I doing something wrong or is there another work around or way to tether FREE to my iPad using my phones Internet?
(I also tried a third party app called FoxFi and same thing happens where my iPad sees it as a connection access point but I cannot actually get on the Internet at all)
(Also what is Bluetooth Tethering?)
TIA
okay i require some information in order to help you.. first question, what carrier are you using? and what type of data plan do you have? is your phone rooted (i'm assuming your using the amaze since your in the amaze Q&A section..? and if you are running a custom rom what rom are you running? or if your stock which app are you using for this wireless tethering ?

The app I use is mainly for File browsing, but I've noticed with the new version is has the ability to turn on Tethering and by-pass the carrier check (on AT&T at least).
No system file modification needed.
Simply go to:
Menu -> Tools -> Net Manager
Downloaded and confirmed it works. This definitely a big plus!

No system wasnt a net manager in my settings options..... so I uninstalled the ES file explorer I had and then installed this one. I was able to turn on the tethering, and my computer recognized it and it appeared to be running, but I was never able to connect to any webpages.

Holy crap. it works. I just turned it on, joined my laptop to it and I'm browsing web pages!!
I'm a new customer to AT&T. So... what is the likelihood that they will catch you and do something drastic, like cancel your service or something? I don't have unlimited data, so it's not like I would abuse it.

Chances are low. Extremely low. I've never been notified once on Android. Even if they detect you they are obligated to send you a written warning before they charge you for extra features. I know this from unauthorized tethering on my iPhone.

You're definitely confused, so I'll help.... The ATT Hotspot app is to connect your phone to the wireless hotspot ATT provides for free at various locations so you don't use your data plan
Wireless tethering is to connect another device (laptop, WiFi tablet, another phone, etc) to use your data plan on your phone wirelessly, turning your phone into a router, receiving data and broadcasting an SSID like your WiFi at home / work does
Make sense?

your explanation does make sense. But, i use the att mobile hotspot app to connect (tether) my laptop to send out emails on my work email because comcast has blocked port 25, whereas i can still send them out tethering from my phone to laptop.

So seems like you must paying for service. This app you using ( stock Mobile Hotspot) dose not work for free with At&t phones if you do not paying for service. I just try and asking me to call 611 for activating tethering.
Thanks OP. works great here.:good:

hrmmm, i guess i need to figure that out... im new to att, just switched when getting this phone. all i know is i am on their mobile share plan with unlimited talk & text, then we pay for the 4g data plan. so maybe the fee is built into the 4gb share data plan.
edit: yea just did some reading and because i am on a mobile share plan there is no fee. i guess that solves y i was confused to begin with on why the op posted this option for free tethering when i can use the built-in for free to tether.
