HOST file for T-Mobile S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I downloaded adaway and applied it, which replaced my host file and blocked ads. After updating, my root went away but the host file stayed the same. Now, all ads are blocked, whether adaway is on or off. I tried uninstalling adaway, removing everything from the host file and still same thing. Either adaway gives me an error or the ads are still disabled. Can someone please tell me what is inside the default host file and or upload it? Thanks

You're in the wrong forum. This is the International GS3 section.
I would imagine your default host file is empty but I don't know if T-Mobile is doing any DNS overriding or whatever.

My apologies. That my first time using the XDA app. Can a mod please move this thread? Thanks.

Pushed apks

I was just wondering what happens if you try to install an apk file by clicking on it if the description of it calls for it to be pushed to the phone?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Only needs to be pushed if it has to go to a certain part of the phone. Apk's can be installed with a file manager by clicking on it. Just have unknown sources checked if it's a non market app. What are u trying to install?

It will just fail. You can try this with install_flash_player.apk (for Flash 10.1). If you don't push that to /System, it will simply give you an error when you click on it.
I'm running the latest axura rom which is missing the google news and weather widget. A link was posted to an apk for it but stated it needs to be pushed. Me just out of curiosity clicked on open after I downloaded the file and since it acted like a normal apk giving me the install options I just wondered what would happen if I actually installed it that way versus the directed push way.

Downloading attatched files on forums straight to phone

When I had my cappy I could download apk and zip files and stuff that people posted on the forums while browsing on my phone. I can't do that anymore. It just keeps saying download unsuccessful. It is kind of a paint to see something I want then have to go to the computer. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to change something in the settings? Thanks for any input.

Do you have a folder in the internel sdcard named DOWNLOAD ?
If not create it and try downloading again. (using default browser).
You should be able to download anything off of internet.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck!
Try downloading "download all files" from the market, it allows the stock browser to download any file type

I checked for the download folder and it was there. I downloaded that app from the market and that did the trick. I am not sure why I never had to do that on my captivate. Maybe it was the rom I was running. Thanks for the help, guys.

I have the same problems with downloads being unsuccessful with the stock browser. But on all other browsers our seems to work fine. I just copy paste the link into a different browser if I want to download something. Dolphin and opera both work fine.

Adfree App Won't Block "Adao-File Manager"

Anyone know why Adao File Managers Adds Aren't getting Blocked through the Adfree App? It's Strange because All my other Apps that have Adds Are being Blocked?

Tried that just Won't Block it!!
You can try other File Manager's which don't show ads. Eg: Astro File Manager or Root Explorer

Yeah I actually have Root Explorer, but its just driving me crazy that I can't block the adds in this one app! Really just trying to figure out why this is the Only app that Adfree Wont Block...
You could try AdAway. If AdAway doesn't block it then try to determine what site the ad is being delivered from and you can blacklist that site with AdAway. You might be able to determine what site Adao is connecting to by looking through your logcat.
If that doesn't work you can use Droidwall to block Adao's internet access or just switch to another file manager.

how to remove ads?

hi

Buy the premium app.
The XDA app was probably developed by someone in their free time. If you don't want to look at ads in the free version, the least you can do is chip in a buck or two to whoever developed it and buy the premium app.
Quite simple, navigate to Play Shop, search for XDA PREMIUM, click buy! Voila, you now have no ads in XDA app

Could be the wifi router you are connected to when you are not getting ads has a firewall active, that is blocking the ad server.
pissyhun, are you still on krinyo's SlimROM? Or are you trying to push his hosts file to another ROM. That's what I want to do when I try AOKP, but have to research first - never done it before.

PM turned on, try again.
This thread is hilariously inappropriate in so many ways
FWIW, I have xda premium. My slightly OT question to the OP is regarding installation of hosts file, nothing else. Adfree doesn't work that well for me.
Adaway works better than adfree, the question could have been phrased better though.

Blocking ads?

I can't seem to find any apps in the Market that black ads.
Does anyone know how to do it?
I am currently running CM10.1. I didn't have any ads running ViperROM 1.2. Is there any way to block them?
I think the play store took away apps that could blocks apps. If I'm not mistaken you need sideload it

I will give this a try. Thanks.
Just to have options, here's one for AdAway.

Download f-droid that is an alternative market for open source apps. It has ad-away which is the best one(dont get adblock its a stupid method and always needs to be running)
I am using host file blocking, check this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098

I use host file blocking as well. Adaway makes it easy to update the host file on a regular basis although I flash so often I usually just set my hosts file and don't bother with the app or updating.

I was actually wondering about that Zone. The host files I've modified on the PC have always been related to using software features.
For ad blocking are the host files the same regardless of if its on a desktop PC or mobile phone, or is the one we use identical to desktop browsers?
Since mobile sites have a different m.example.com URL often I didn't know if the host files were different.

HOST file to my knowledge is the same across all platforms including Windows, OSX, iPhone, Android and probably Linux. The same file can be used for all of them. My HOST only blocks like ads.example.com so yes if you wanted to block a m.example.com you would have to add that but wouldn't hurt say Windows.
