[Q] Cant get into recovery - HTC EVO 3D

Gave my Evo 3d to my borother a few months back, but hes come back to me today saying it was stuck in bootloop.
He booted into the bootloader and did a factory reset, but it was still stuck in bootloop.
I tried to get into recovery to flash a new rom, but when i select recovery from the bootloader, that also goes into a bootloop.
Used adb to push the recovery onto the phone again but still just keeps bootlooping.
Not sure if its important but the phone is s-off. Any ideas on whats going on or how to fix?
Apologies, supposed to put this in Q&A forum

While you're at bootloader, connect USB and then flash a stock RUU.

You didn't say what version of the Evo 3D you have (CDMA or GSM) or what bootloader is installed, but if it's a Sprint CDMA model I would recommend flashing the Sprint ICS RUU.exe from Windows after putting the phone into fastboot mode in the bootloader. You may have to relock the bootloader with the "fastboot oem lock" command first if it shows "***UNLOCKED***" at the top of the screen.
That will fix a lot of problems, especially when the phone is in an indeterminate state. After flashing the RUU you can HTC unlock, flash a custom recovery and then root the stock ROM or flash a rooted ROM.

Sorry it is a UK GSM (Europe). I have revolutionary bootloader installed. Got an RUU to try now thanks.

^^^^ He got it first with the short version.
No, you won't lose S-OFF and won't need to relock the bootloader first if that's your current status.
And if it's a GSM model everything still applies, you just need a different RUU, which you already have.

Thanks ramjet. Thought this was going to be straightforward but cant get ruu to install. Error 170. Ill keep plugging away / googling away, hopefully come up with something

Error 170 means that the RUU utility can't find the phone. There's a readme.doc for running the RUU here, and the error codes are towards the end of that.
Are you putting it into "fastboot" mode in the bootloader, which should change to "fastboot usb" when it is connected to a computer? You also need to have the HTC USB drivers active, which can be accomplished by installing HTC Sync.

adb push into a bootlooping phone?
do you have the drivers for the phone? (if not download and install HTC Sync as they come with it)
did you try flashing a custom recovery img through fastboot? (go to bootloader select fastboot, connect USB, type "fastboot flash recovery nameOfYourRecoveryImg.img")

Yeah have tried installing custom recovery through fast boot again, and im in fastboot ok when trying to run the RUU. Also have HTC Sync installed from when i had the phone.. Drivers seemed to be ok as i was able to install the custom recovery with adb, alhough i still got bootloop after that.
Ive a few other things to try when i get home from work. Im sure it shouldnt be too difficult to resolve. Hopefully anyway.

Well this isnt going smoothly at all. Used another PC and was able to get the RUU to run.
However it now comes up with Error 131 Customer ID problem. The RUU was for HTC Europe (non branded). The phone was sim free. When i posted months back my cid was HTC_001. I checked it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22394863&postcount=172
However now when i get my CID it is showing as CID0202. Any way i can get an RUU to install? Any idea how a CID could change?
EDIT: noticed i used a different command last time.
fastboot getvar cid shows CID0202
adb shell getprop ro.cid now shows device not found (previously showed CID_001)
Thats typing both commands in same window, one after the other. One gets CID0202, the other device not found???

There's a change cid command in fastboot, fastboot oem writecid or something along those lines... however i believe the cid check is in the updater scripts of the ruu in which case a fastboot flash of all the img files should avoid it entirely... i don't remember the procedure for extracting the img files from the ruu but i believe ur supposed to run it and then dig through your temp files...

Thanks for this. Ill see if i can find anything else out about it. So saves running the RUU exe and no cid check done then?

Need to bump this as im not getting anywhere. No RUU's will install, error 31 customer error. Have flashed recovery via ADB and through PG86IMG.ZIP, but still cant get in to recovery as it just continually reboots.
S-OFF with revolutionary. Anybody any ideas please?

Got bigger problems than i thought. Finally got an RUU to install after 4 days of trying, by first using fastboot oem writecid 11111111. But when the phone rebooted it was back bootlooping again. Is there any hope for my phone?

You need to stop cross posting in the d3rp Q&A thread and your own thread if you want more help. Cross-posting is stongly discouraged on XDA and it's really confusing when you are asking for help in one thread while getting different advice in another.
It sounds to me like all the CID changes on your phone have left it in an indeterminate state and I'm not sure at this point what is the correct CID and RUU for your model. If you could detemine that, set the CID correctly and flash the right RUU the phone should work, but it might be too late if you have in fact been flashing firmware that doesn't match your phone because the right RUU may not back that out properly.
That's all I can offer at this point, but since I don't know the history of your phone and how it got the various CID's you have reported, you will probably be the one that needs to figure it out.

What exactly does your bootloader say? It sounds like it is not unlocked.
If you relocked to run the RUU.exe or take the OTA update it may not be locked now.

Hmmm...
Well, you won't be able to flash PG86IMG.zip files from the bootloader with S-ON unless thay are signed by HTC so that's probably your problem there.
The "remote not allowed" is usually an indication the bootloader is locked. Make sure your phone is in "fastboot usb" mode in the bootloader, then issue the following commands:
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (where "recovery.img" is the file name of your custom recovery)
What responses do you get?
ramjet73
it shows my device listed and then says the same remote not allowed-
Did you check usb debugging in your phone's settings first? Also if you have htc sync on your pc you may want to unistall it also. Some programs do interfere with fastboot.

Can you try those fastboot commands again and copy and paste the actual output from the commands into this thread? Sometimes there is something in that which might give us a clue as to what the problem is.
Edit: Never mind. I saw you posted again in the other thread so you can wait for a response over there. Make 100% sure your bootloader is unlocked because sometimes flashing the unlock bin file doesn't take and the phone doesn't show the unlock option if you upgraded to ICS via the OTA. If nothing else works I would suggest relocking the bootloader and starting over with the RUU.exe, per the instructions in my root and S-OFF guide.

My guess is that you are not really unlocked (Screenshot?) or you are not using a compatible recovery file/filename.
Have a look at the HTC Unlock Guide in my signature to see if anything stands out that you are overlooking.
Even if you get a recovery going, I'm not sure what your ultimate goal is here. You should continue this in one thread, specifically your Remote Not Allowed thread.

[Q] Help - Possibly Bricked?

Okay I have made a thread about this before, but no one had an answer for me, so I will try again, but I will be more descriptive of my issue.
So the other day, my Evo 3D, which is flashed to MetroPCS, lost its carrier settings when I was flashing a ROM. So I had to go home and use QPST to edit some files in the nvm/num folder (Using EFS). While I was editing, the program crashed, and I was forced to unplug my Evo.
Now, after it rebooted, it would go past the HTC Screen, and flash the boot animation for a split second, then shut off and restart. It would loop like this no matter how long I left it.
So I went into 4-EXT recovery, and formatted system, boot, data etc, and then flashed a ROM. Rebooted and got the same thing. So in a last ditch effort, I downloaded the latest ICS RUU for this phone, and tried all three methods to install. I ran the .exe, the program ran as expected, and the phone showed the progress bar on a black HTC Screen as updating, it rebooted when done, and then just continued to bootloop. I also pulling the rom.zip and renaming it to PG86IMG.zip and flashing it from fastboot. It worked and once it rebooted, did the same thing. I also ran it from fastboot usb, and got the same result.
However, I extracted the rom.zip and tried to use fastboot to flash individual .img files, and on EVERY one, I got "FAILED - Error: (remote: not allowed).
I had previously used the wiretrick to get S-OFF on my Hboot 1.58.
It says "Unlocked" at the top of the bootloader.
I really need to get my phone working, can someone PLEASE point me in the correct direction or at least help me out? Is my phone ruined? Is there a way I can clear the NV memory or something to truly reset the phone?
Once again, I will repeat, RUUs will not work!, I am S-OFF on HBOOT 1.58, my bootloader says "unlocked." No matter what I do it will bootloop. I can flash a recovery, but if I flash a rom it does the same stuff.
When you ran the ruu.exe, did you lock the bootloader first? If you don't, the ruu won't work.

I don't remember, but wouldn't the RUU fail if it was unlocked? Because it didn't fail, it just didnt work.
So now I screwed up, I got it to be able to erase/write in fastboot, I used fastboot erase instead of fastboot format and now my partitions are gone, how do I get those back?

Sounds like a similar thing that happened to me when trying to flash a JB rom with a kernal that was not compatable....no matter what I did I could not get it out of the boot loop...I am Hboot 1.58 HTC unlocked and wire trick S-off...I finally flashed an old backup I had with a stock kernal and it fixed it all...dont know if this helps you at all but try wiping everything possible and flashing a stock kernal or an old backup you may have...

Why are you using fastboot commands like "erase" and "format". Partitions should be formatted in recovery, not the bootloader.
If the RUU ran successfully it should reboot into the stock ROM when it finished. Did that work?

Stuck in Fastboot, trying to return to Stock

Semi-noob here, would appreciate any help!
S-Off using revone, flashed CWM, and then ROM'd. Found an issue with the phone (wireless charger not working), so need to return to stock before bringing to Verizon. Used adb to S-On, and now, I am STUCK in Fastboot (or is it called Hboot?)!
None of the "options in Fastboot do anything (Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, Factory Reset). I can't get anywhere past Fastboot!
I think my problem was that I did not flash the stock ROM first, before S-on again. The phone no longer goes into Bootloader, so I don't know how to flash a ROM at this point.
Any help would be majorly appreciated! Thank you, oh wise ones...

The good news is, if you really are stuck in fastboot, you can still use adb/fastboot commands to get your phone working again. There is an important distinction between fastboot and hboot, though: fastboot is basically the bootloader's "debug" mode, while hboot is the regular bootloader mode. You won't be able to do much if your bootloader says "hboot" above the available options, but if it says "fastboot" or "fastboot usb" you're fine.
You should try to get s-off again (assuming you haven't relocked your bootloader) either via revone or facepalm, then flash a stock rom and proceed from there.
Clarification: if you have relocked your bootloader, unlock, then get s-off.
Used adb to S-On? Meaning what exactly? Did you lock beforehand?
I currently have S-on. I used revone's method to S-off.
I think the problem is that I have relocked the bootloader (phone shows LOCKED) with a custom ROM installed. I think I should have flashed a stock ROM before relocking. Would this have caused the problem I'm having?
I am not sure how to get S-off again, because I am stuck on the FASTBOOT. Selecting Bootloader/Reboot/Reboot Bootloader just returns me to the same screen. When I try to enter any line items (in Terminal), adb says there are no devices connected (this is probably due to the fact that my phone no longer boots to the homescreen). Any suggestions of how to get S-off again??
Thanks...
What method did you use for S-ON? There are guides here that lay out every step needed to return to stock.
Also when in fastboot, you need to use fastboot, not adb. Type in fastboot devices. Does your device ID show?
I would suggest trying to run the RUU. Although it may not work depending on HBOOT version and the fact you are now S-ON.
Can you boot into Recovery? If so, is there a ROM still on the phone? If so, try flashing it...

RUU says I am currently on 2.06, so is this the correct RUU file?
Another option for me, other than putting the phone back to stock, is for me to completely brick it. I tried unplugging and powering off the phone while RUU was running, but it still comes back to Fastboot. Suggestions?

Just run the RUU. There is only one RUU. You are on 2.06, that's why it tells you that. Let the whole thing run.
You cannot downgrade via RUU. You need to unlock the phone, s-off it (facepalm should suffice) then you can RUU back to 1.15 if you choose.

[Q] HTC One M7, Reverse S-Off Super CID Confusion

Hello Everyone,
I know this probably isn't the best place to post this question. I'm limited to not posting in the dev section.
I'm going to post my question and hope someone can help anyway.
I have an HTC One (M7) that seemed to have reception problems. I always thought I just needed to flash a new radio. So I went ahead and S-OFF'd my phone as well as Super CID. I then flashed a new radio & my reception problem seemed to go away. (or so i thought).
I then went ahead and turned my AT&T One into a Google Edition.
I have noticed that my reception problems never really went away. (When I am at home I have full bars. The conversation starts out fine, but about 10 seconds in, the person at the other end can no longer hear me.)
I now suspect this is a problem with the antenna & I have to get my phone back to stock so that I can hopefully switch out for a new one.
I'm just wondering which step I should do first. S-On again (I used REVONE to S-OFF) , CID back to AT&T, or switch back from the GE rom?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Dan

If I were returning my phone to Stock, this is the process I would use
Change CID to Stock fastboot oem writecid CWS__001
Run the latest RUU for my phone
then use Revone to lock the bootloader and s-on
I think that's the correct order .. if anyone knows different please chime in

I guess I spoke too soon. After completion, I realized that TWRP was still installed, so I flashed the stock recovery. At this point everything seemed fine, but I noticed that the supersu icon was still there. I also noticed that wifi will no longer turn on. Clearly I've done something wrong.
The first time I had used a nandroid backup to restore to stock, then lock, s-on, remove tampered. That is when I realized TWRP was still installed and SuperSu was still there.
This is when I downloaded an RUU that matched my phone, but it errors saying something like "wrong boot version" (I'm not near my home pc to look)
I tried the process again & somehow SuperSu lost binaries. So I unlocked my bootloader again through HTCDev.com This gave me working SuperSu again. And this is where I am stuck.
I wonder if the GE rom changed something so that this process wont work?

I wonder if the GE rom changed something so that this process wont work?

here is how you extract rom.zip:
Quote:
the .exe utilities can be finicky,so if you have trouble getting it to run, you can extract "rom.zip" in the following manner:
-start the utility
-check the "i understand" box to move on to the next screen
-hide the utility temporarily out of site
-search your C drive for "rom.zip". you will find it in a temporary location(it will be in a different spot each time you run the utility)
-open the folder location, and transfer rom.zip to a safe location on your PC.
-unhide and cancel the utility, youre done with it.
-rom.zip can be flashed using
adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip rom.zip
fastboot flash zip rom.zip (yes do this 2 times)
fastboot reboot

here are some directions to flash "rom.zip"
if youre working with a booted, operational phone, you can flsh the file in the following manner:
-open a cmd window
-change to adb/fastboot directory
cd c:\foldername
(cd c:\mini-adb if youve used any of my guides )
-place the zip file you want to flash into adb/fastboot directory
-enable usb debug, disable fastboot, plug in phone
-check for connectivity
adb devices (should return serial number)
-boot to fastboot
adb reboot bootloader
-check for connectivity again
fastboot devices
-flash the file
fastboot erase cache
fastboto oem rebootRUU (will put you in ruu mode, black screen silver htc letters)
fastboot flash zip zipfilename.zip (will send and flash the file. dont interupt it while the cmd window shows its writinging, and the green status bar is moving on the phone screen)
*sometimes a file will fail with a pre-update error. this is normal, just enter again:
fastboot flash zip zipfilename.zip
and this time it will finish
-when you get "finished" and "OK"
fastboot reboot-bootloader (takes you back to fastboot)
-reboot back to the OS
fastbooot reboot
you can use this if you dont have an operational phone as well. you just need to manually put the phone in fastboot(select from hboot menu) then skip the "adb" commands and start with fastboot devices
to answer your other question, yes, you will need to re-unlock and re-install recovery after running the RUU. an ruu is designed as an "unroot" solution, or emergency fix,if other attempts have not made the phone operational.

change your CID back to 11111111 and try again
Did you change you MID ?
What is the name of the RUU your using ?
My mid is PN0712000. I think that was always my mid. Don't recall changing it.
My cid is currently CW__001
I've tried: RUU_M7_UL_JB_50_Cingular_1.26.502.12.exe
also tried: RUU_M7_UL_JB_50_Cingular_US_1.26.502.15_Radio_4A.17.3250.20_10.40.1150.04_release_326691_signed_2.exe
I'm currently S-On (could that be an issue?)
I'm unlocked.

It worked once I set CID to 11111111 !!
So now I just have to change CID back, reverse S-Off again and change the unlocked and tampered flags?
Yep that should do it
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4
It did! I'm completely back to stock. I decided to update to the latest RUU that AT&T has released. Just to avoid AT&T wanting me to update to see if it fixes the problem. I know for a fact that it wouldn't fix the problem anyway.
Oddly, my phone told me I was up to date while on the .12 RUU even though I knew the .15 RUU exists. I downloaded the RUU for .15 and it ran fine once I went back to stock after running the .12 rom.zip.
In summary, you saved me from a huge headache! Thanks so much for all the help & kindness.

How did you change our CID if you were S-On?
clsA said:
If I were returning my phone to Stock, this is the process I would use
Change CID to Stock fastboot oem writecid CWS__001
Run the latest RUU for my phone
then use Revone to lock the bootloader and s-on
I think that's the correct order .. if anyone knows different please chime in
Here's a definitive Guide

HTC EVO 3D - Long Story - Trying to get back to GB with issues (Details in thread)

Hey all,
I have this HTC EVO 3D that just, refuses to co-operate with me.
Story goes -
Got it on ICS and everything was working fine on it. I looked for updates available and it found a 28MB update that I installed and once the phone rebooted with the update, the camera fails to start and the touch screen just starts going crazy and opening everything, whereas before it fine.
So, I attempted to try and get it back to Gingerbread.
And googled and googled and googled.
Reason why I have opened a new thread is cause it's sort of everything going weird with it.
Of course, trying RUU files and trying to flash RUU in zip failed so on so forth.
I had unlocked the Bootloader and S-ON is on at this point. Also had CWM recovery installed and was able to boot into that.
With this in place, I read up on the wire trick and thought, yeah it seems a bit hard, I'll take it to a phone repair shop, where they had the phone for 2 weeks and told me that it was S-OFF and back to stock.
Since they had it and I got it back, it's now stuck in a boot loop and I can not get into any recovery etc (With the original SD Card in it). Can get to Bootloader and fastboot though.
Spent the last 3 hours with about 20 tabs in Chrome opened on how to exactly go from here and I am stuck.
Got a Linux Laptop here and tried to ControlBear and it comes up with ADB and Fastboot not found (Directory points to it being in tmp..no idea)
TL;DR
HTC Evo 3D (Australian Variant, was running ICS Telstra OEM)
Unlocked Bootloader
SHOOTER_U PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.53.0007
eMMC-boot
Radio - 11.25.3504.16 M
Boot Loops, No Recovery, Fastboot commands work on windows.
So just wondering, where do I go from here. I don't know if the device is completely bricked now or if it can be saved.
(I tried a number of zip files on the SD Card (PG86IMG.zip) and nothing due to having S-ON.
Hoping someone can provide a procedure or point me in the right direction.
As reference, I used this thread mostly before it was taken to the Repair Shop and got stuffed.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks so much.

Hello my friend, the reason you can't load the pg86img is because you have unlocked bootloader. The fastboot commands could help us a lot, did you follow the controlbear instructions in the correct order? I think there is a way through windows with exe files I don't remember well because I did S-OFF 3years+ before. If you want we can try together some time. If you want for start we can flash 4ext recovery and a custom rom so your phone can boot.

Hi there, I didn't know with having the bootloader unlocked that it would cause any issues, but there you go!
Yeah, if there's a guide to flashing the 4EXT Recovery and a custom rom that would be great!
I have a fair idea of how to do it, but don't want to try anything without having someone of greater knowledge point me in the right direction
Thanks!
Just an update, I did come across a thread to flash 4EXT Recovery onto my Evo 3D.
Put Recovery.img into my platform-tools folder, used the fastboot command, it said sending and OK.
Selected recovery and still boot loops. No idea where to go from here now

Hey there,
That's OK, I don't mind the wait, it's all good!
I can boot into Fastboot, but when I choose recovery/factory reset etc, it shows the HTC Logo and then goes into a bootloop.
As for the ROM, I want to get the original GB ROM for it because when I updated it to the latest ICS that's when the camera and touch started to get weird, whereas beforehand it was fine.
So thinking, if I go back down to GB Stock, that it should be all fine again, but I am not too sure on that one.
Thanks!

Well, we have to downgrade the hboot version first. Did you do the wire trick procedure right? You can download a pg86img and flash it first to fix the bootloops. First lock the bootloader. When you finish this report here. I have to sleep it's late here and I work early. I'll send you tomorrow. See you.

Ok, the technician I took the phone to supposedly did the wire trick for S-OFF, but, it's still S-ON.
I have downloaded a lot of stock PG86IMG files before posting on here and none work, they scan when in bootloader and then nothing after that.
But that would be because I haven't locked the bootloader. So in saying this, I lock the bootloader following steps on many forum posts on here, then flash a .zip file that's correct and then it should all work?
I'll wait for your response, thanks!

Hey, so I tried a P86IMG.zip from this thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2274635
I couldn't find another one and with that I get an error "Main Version Fail" or "Main Version Check Fail".
I then tried RUU and RUU in zip format.
RUU comes back with wrong bootloader error. (I couldn't find an RUU that matched my radio version so I went with the nearest one)
RUU Zip comes back through fastboot with "remote 43 main version check fail"
Also I tried to do the Wire Trick and got stuck at the "ADB and Fastboot not found" even though the files are there and the phone is connected.
So still a little bit...stuck :\
Also relocked bootloader it just says relocked now.
If you need any other additional info I can send screenshots of what it's at.
Thanks!

So update -
DK sent me the windows version of ControlBear via PM - thank you.
Have an unlocked bootloader.
I tried ControlBear, and because I can not boot into the OS, I start it at Fastboot USB, it reboots, then says "Connecting to Device", then "Testing ADB connection" then "Press Enter To Exit" and that's it, can't do anything else from there, and it gets stuck in the boot loop that it still has.
Tried again to google for methods for HBOOT 1.53, and am trying some of those methods, but it's not looking good at all.
I haven't even got to the stage where it asks me to do any sort of wire trick.
Also my battery in the EVO 3D has died so am using a battery out of a HTC MyTouch 4G with help from electrical tape :\
So now, any suggestions? I am trying to flash another RUU that's stock for my Radio (Well, it's close enough - RUUs are both 11.25.3504.06, mine is 11.25.3504.16)
EDIT: Tried all RUUs with relocked bootloader and comes back with bootloader error (ERROR 140). So, no idea.
Also it's scanning for PG86DIAG.img files on the SD Card - that's not normal is it.
Do you think we should give up on it, it's probably hard bricked and dead now
I think it's literally hard bricked and no way to bring it back from the dead.
As per my original post, all the details for the phone are there. And it sucks that I can't find a correct RUU for my phone (As it was Telstra AU - latest update of ICS)
AHH I don't know.

First of all you should be unlocked now with 1.53 hboot. Download from here the latest 4ext recovery (4EXT_Recovery_Touch_v1.0.0.6_RC3)
It's in my mega account don't worry about malicious software I downloaded it 5 minutes before doing this post. If you don't have unlocked your bootloader do it with the tokens HTC sent you in your email. Flash this recovery from fastboot (fastboot flash recovery "recoveryname".img). After that remove the battery and re-enter fastboot mode (Vol down+power button) and choose recovery. If you manage to boot into recovery from there tell me to send you a link for a rom to flash. I don't believe its a hard brick.

Try doing:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery "recovery".img
fastboot format system
fastboot format boot
And if it still doesn't let me send you a boot.img in some minutes to try flashing it.
EDIT: And something last, you can still do the controlbear trick while not in OS, its easy if you wanna try let me know.
