[Q] is it possible to backup 2.3.5 unrooted? - Motorola Droid X2

My brother's DX2 is stock 2.3.5, unrooted.
It has been going slow, and recently the mic stopped working in calls.
I figure it's probably time to do a reflash of either the stock rom, or a stable cm, or perhaps eclipse rom.
the problem is it's not rooted, and I want to backup the apps and app data. Is there any way to do this? I hear to root 2.3.5 you must restore to 2.3.4, erasing everything, then use root keeper, and update again. So what should I do?

Take a look at this:

2.3.5 is rootable

[Q] Backing up internal SD card

Hey guys,
Im about to update my phone OTA and i will like to re-root. When reading the steps to root again it says that it will delete the entire internal SD card. How do you back this up? Is the only way to back it up with Titanum and clicking everything installed and then backing it up that way or is there another way of backing it up? is it in the works to retain root how we did with the 4.1.5.7 update?

You can already retain root using the previous GladRoot method! I guess the op just hasn't updated it yet to say so, he did however confirm on that post that it works to retain root on the 4.1.83 update. I can confirm it works as well. I had no mods so I accepted the update, ran "afterupdate" from GladRoot & drank a beer.
previous gladroot method? whats that? is it the same thing as when updating to 4.1.5.7?

Yes, absolutely! Do it the exact same way.
i dont remember how i did it lol...i just remember clicking beforeupdate.bat then installing 5.7 then afterupdate.bat. Im still running a stock rom in it, so i should just install the update and click afterupdate.bat or do the before update then the after update?
EDIT:
Never mind i figured it out...all i did was update the phone then click afterupdate.bat and that was it. Thanks

[Q] Root 4.1.83 Without Formatting SDcard

I have been looking for a way to root before I go ahead and install the 4.1.83 update. But the only way I can find is Gingerbreak and from what I have read it formats the SDcard.
Is there a way to root without having to lose everything? Why does the SDcard have to be formatted? The two other times I rooted my device there was no formatting required.
It's an unresolved side-effect, not a planned behavior. So it's a consequence of an exploit.
You don't have to lose everything - you have to backup before you use the exploit.
AFAICT it simply wipes the internal sdcard. So backup the contents, use TB to backup apps and data. Then go for it.
First time I did not backup properly and lost the apps (2) I moved to media and the music I'd copied from my pc. Second time managed to retain everything except, somehow, it broken the homescreen links to two apps - though the apps were still present, I have no idea what happened but it was a 10 second fix.
I unmounted the internal sd card before running it, and it didn't delete anything. Ymmv.

I didn't do anything special before running Gingerbreak and nothing was erased...

Excellent, why didn't I think of that - will try that next time!
Thanks.

I didnt back anything up and ive done it 3 times now. Each time it only deleted angry birds.

err you can still flash the 1.2.6 sbf than do the frozenfish root with the afterupdate, than ota to 1.5.7 and ota to 1.8.3 and use the afterupdate. it does take up way more time and effort than the gingerbreak method
I discover a way to run gringerbreak
download it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765

How to root without using StreakMod

Is there any way to? My phone won't let me flash from streakmod, or clockwork. And I really want to root my phone, for adjbrightness and underclocking and such... Please tell me there is SOME way of rooting my phone, without using streakmod or clockwork. And yes, I've done a bit of research, and can't find it myself....
What rom are you on? If you're using 360 or newer there is no other way

I'm on the official Gingerbread ROM... There's seriously no way?
Not afaik, dell included extra exploit fixes so even though it's 2.3.3 it's about as secure as any 2.3.x rom.

Well, I have an interesting update. With the help of lordmorphous, I've determined that it is not my internal sd card that is bad. But for some reason, it won't read a certain directory... I switched my internal sd card, with my external, and I was able to root it just fine. Afterwards, I switched them back, and it it still working just fine... I have no idea what has caused this issue, but it seems to be one I can deal with.

Might be a silly thought, but have you enabled the unknown sources option...?
Lee
yep thats been done,
under Security > Unknown Sources is ticked
doesnt seem to be anyother settings that i could've missed either.
Hmm. Odd bug then. I can't help (or confirm) yet as I'm doing a system dump before flashing (LPH to LPQ, full wipe + internal sd format). Copying everything from my internal sd to the pc takes a little while, it was nearly full...
You've tried the nasty shotgun approach of clearing caches and fixing permissions...?

Working fine here. I did a wipe before install as it wouldn't work the first time I flashed.
Working fine here. I didn't wipe.
The only thing I noticed is that some apps, previously installed, didn't work. I uninstalled them and reinstalled them from the internal SD Card.
Do you have Root? Depending on how you flashed your phone, you may have lost root access and thus some apps that require root may not install.
i agree it is an odd "bug" not sure why it would do this.
when the install application screen comes up, only the cancel button is responsive.
also i can confirm i have root - i flashed CF_root strait after.
flash the stock XXLPQ kernel, and you will be able to install

Have you tried unmounting SD card and then mounting it, I had a few issues like that and that fixed it for me.

yes i have tried this, and also did the fix permissions thing in CWM
Not too sure if your issue is related, but you can try the following trick.

Hope this help.
in case you loose root

Flashing back the stock kernel will actually solve the problem. For the case of rooting your phone, you can use:

Got stock kernel on, and rooted my phone using that method. Everything works fine.

ZergRush root and OTA

I just was reading the eclipse thread and I really want to flash eclipse after I install the OTA, but I originally rooted using ZergRush. The thread said that you can't update to the newest OTA if you have used ZergRush since It moves some files around, do I need to d/l a stock version of 2.3.4 and SBF back to that or if I unroot using ZergRush will that work??
Please ask questions in Q&A forums.
Thread moved.
I would recommend going back to stock 2.3.4 and rooting using Pete's One Click Root. ZR modifies some system files which borks the update, and while unrooting through ZR will take away your root access, I'm not sure it'll re-modify (or unmodify?) the system files. While it may be another step (and maybe another 5-10 minutes of your time) if ZR unroot ends up messing with the update anyway, you'd still have to do it. Much easier to just start fresh then it is to get halfway through and learn you have to start over anyway.
I was an idiot and did not backup the stock ROM unrooted.

Hence, that is what SBF is for.

yeah the whole sbf kinda scares me...but I'm sure it's not bad I was scared of flashing roms and I've done it countless times now. Will an SBF wipe my external SD card too?? It's just a pain to go stock, root, and restore all my apps again, I know a couple days of work will pay off, but I almost want to stay on liberty and not get the OTA....I've sent my brain into a bootloop today!
if you can flash a rom you can SBF, ain't no thang

No. It only wipes the internal memory. It leaves the internal and external SD cards alone.
For example: with a pc you might have a c: drive and a separate d: and (for the sake of argument) e: drive. Sbfing is like reinstalling windows on your c: drive. It will reformat the c: drive (your internal memory of the phone) but it will leave the d: drive (your internal SD card) and e: drive (your external SD card) alone.
