[Q] Root 4.1.83 Without Formatting SDcard - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been looking for a way to root before I go ahead and install the 4.1.83 update. But the only way I can find is Gingerbreak and from what I have read it formats the SDcard.
Is there a way to root without having to lose everything? Why does the SDcard have to be formatted? The two other times I rooted my device there was no formatting required.

It's an unresolved side-effect, not a planned behavior. So it's a consequence of an exploit.
You don't have to lose everything - you have to backup before you use the exploit.
AFAICT it simply wipes the internal sdcard. So backup the contents, use TB to backup apps and data. Then go for it.
First time I did not backup properly and lost the apps (2) I moved to media and the music I'd copied from my pc. Second time managed to retain everything except, somehow, it broken the homescreen links to two apps - though the apps were still present, I have no idea what happened but it was a 10 second fix.

I unmounted the internal sd card before running it, and it didn't delete anything. Ymmv.

I didn't do anything special before running Gingerbreak and nothing was erased...

Excellent, why didn't I think of that - will try that next time!
Thanks.

err you can still flash the 1.2.6 sbf than do the frozenfish root with the afterupdate, than ota to 1.5.7 and ota to 1.8.3 and use the afterupdate. it does take up way more time and effort than the gingerbreak method

I discover a way to run gringerbreak
download it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765

[Q] Want to go back and start fresh

If that means factory reset, sd format, or all the way back to 1.5... Please help.
Yes I have read a bunch of stuff, googled...but going back to fresh "do-over" is unknown territory.
Please post link that is comprehendable, for noobs like me. I believe I am on v3 leak 2.1 OTA with recent update.
Thanks
Wanting to do this asap
what is "recent update?"
in any case... if you are rooted (if that's what "recent update" means) than do this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=652419
if you are actually on the leak (with the JulyOTA update)... than do this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228
then this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=652419
just as a disclaimer... i've never used either method... never on the leak, etc. but, if you read the entire posts, i'm hopefully this works out for you.
read everything 2 or 3 or 4 times before doing anything. and have a solid backup before you start.
good luck!
EDIT: sorry, jcase has the link removed in the other post. my apologies.
I am rooted
I sort of screwed up when I did an sd card to computer backup. Once I reformatted, I cut and pasted back onto SD, then after some more testing of Roms and such, I reformatted fresh, and have no backup crap. i cut and paste, not copy to sd...
I messed up...
So my Eris was 1.49boot, then I was finally able to root..
Now?
I just want to begin over from Factory..
you are rooted and you just can't boot?
i'm not really sure how that applies to the sdcard, unless you were using a2sd, but even then, that partition would most likely not show up when you mounted it.
what recovery are you using? amon's? or...
you could just boot to recovery (holding vol up + power) and turn on usb-toggle... then, copy a rom over, turn off usb, then flash (i'd recommend formatting your sdcard while in there... unless you haven't backed it) - (your post suggest it's empty now anyways).
as a side note, cut/paste or copy/paste SHOULD of worked fine... unless you just drug a bunch of shortcuts over (sorry, not sure what OS you are using... i'm assuming Windows).
do you want to lose root? you could use jcase's Plain Jane ROM... Or ivan's Official... they are pretty close to stock.
if i'm way off base, forgive me. i'm not 100% sure what you are trying to do, or if your phone is even bootable.
I am rooted
I can boot, when I cut and paste my backup on my computer, and moved it to sd it worked...but as I reformatted later, I assumed what was on my computer was still there, so when I reformatted, I lost everything...
Now at this point, I'm trying to just start like out of the box, or would it be easier to just get a new damn one?
Never had any problems until I started having trouble with CyanoTazz v6.
Now I'm all messed up, Titanium B, MMorph, BusyBox...none work
Why don't you just flash a different rom?
That is a question I have: is there a downgrade for leakers?... I would like to get back to a better hboot...

Just boot into recovery, mount the SD card, copy a ROM over and flash it. And read the directions for the tazz v6 rom again, it works fine.

[Q] Help I deleted Google Talk and have no app mgr.

I rooted my phone to run froyo and delete seemingly useless apps. I deleted Google Talk and without it market doesnt work. I attempted to get Talk back with a system update and lost my app mgr and all other installed apps. I'm not sure if I backed up my phone properly because in recovery mode the phone says when trying to restore from nand that it cannot find the directory /sdcard/nandroid. The upside is, I have another broken screen droid eris with an untouched sd card. How do I safely swap sd cards and run the old software, do I need to unroot first? Is there an easier way to re-install google talk?
I'm not sure what system update you are talking about, but am hoping you didn't unroot it too. You can swap SD cards, that's not problem. If it was previously set up with apps2sd, then Froyo won't read it, but I feel that this is just your first time rooting, right? If so, no reason to worry. If you were using it, then you can still run the Nandroid from that SD card via Recovery, it will just give you a SD card error when you reboot (Froyo needs to have an unpartitioned card to use it properly). As far as installing Talk, you can get it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9903887/Talk.apk - download this from your phone or via computer and drag/drop to SD card. Install another file manager like Astro/AndExplorer/Estrongs/whatever and install from SD card.
Easiest thing really is going to be just to flash a new rom or reinstall your other one. If you need to uninstall /system/apps I would recommend Titanium Backup. It will uninstall and not mess up everything else around it.
PS. Your other card will work fine too with no extra steps. Just plug and play.
Flash gapps through recovery. This will reinstall all the Google apps (like talk) on your phone.
Get them here:

As always, be sure to nand backup and make sure the nand is good before messing with system apps.

[Q] Does flashing 1.83 wipe any data?

I was wondering, does flashing 1.83 wipe any data?

I don't know about flashing but the OTA update does not. You do lose root.
I flashed with RSD Lite and only lost Angry Birds! I believe it was due to being installed to the Media Area. Look at your Manage Apps area to see the Media Area tab. After reinstalling Angry Birds I then told it to move so if I reflashed I wouldn't lose again. Gotta love that app! When I did GingerBlur with external micro SD, nothing was lost.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Flashing the the SBF shouldnt make you loose anything but when you do gingerbreak to get root back, it will remove all your apps that were "moved to media area." So before you do it, read the previous post. Go to the media area tab and move everything to phone first.

[Q] Is my methodology correct?

First of all, love the forum. It's been a huge help in educating me about the rooting process and different uses for roms and such. I'm here pretty much seeking confirmation on what I'm about to do. Please bear with me.
I'm using LG P500 Optimus One, running Froyo 2.2.2, firmware v10g. Since the new Official Gingerbread update is coming in a few days/weeks, I don't plan on installing a rom. However, I wish to backup my phonebook and game data so the update won't remove it. Having said so, I will need Titanium Backup which needs rooting.
Here's how I plan on doing it:
1. Enable USB debugging mode.
2. Use an old but recently formatted SD card and copy-paste GingerBreak v1.2.apk on it.
3. Insert SD card and install Gingerbreak (but not use app2sd after installation)
4. Open Gingerbreak after installation has completed and press the "root" button. (Should I expect any problems here?)
5. After rooting process finishes, the phone should reboot itself. (Again, should I be worrying here?)
6. Check to see if SuperUser is installed to signal a successful rooting process. (Is there anything else that I need to install?)
7. Download Titanium Backup from the Android Market.
8. Batch backup phonebook and apps with game data
9. Transfer backup files to my laptop for safekeeping.
10. Uninstall Titanium Backup.
11. Open Gingerbreak and click "unroot" (I don't know what happens here. Does the phone reboot itself?)
12. Once Official 2.3.X update is available, update as I would with firmware. (This should work since I unrooted, right?)
13. Repeat process 1-7. Restore phonebook and apps with game data.
14. Repeat process 10-11.
Is all of this correct? Should I expect any problems with this process? Should I install anything else after rooting to make this work?
No...your procedure is correct ...and you can backup contacts by exporting them to SD...and apps by using some app which work without a root alternatively....not sure whether you can't install official 2.3.3 if you rooted or not..but mostly you can

Ah yes, but how about game data/scores? What app can you suggest that can backup installed apps with said data?
well truly speaking i am also a tb fan...and i am 90% sure you can have official 2.3.3 even if you have root ....just get it confirmed and proceed
My goodness. Someone ever told you, you talk too much. Just do whatever you want to do with following instruction carefully. Then come back if you are facing any problem. Here people will surely help you.

ZergRush root and OTA

I just was reading the eclipse thread and I really want to flash eclipse after I install the OTA, but I originally rooted using ZergRush. The thread said that you can't update to the newest OTA if you have used ZergRush since It moves some files around, do I need to d/l a stock version of 2.3.4 and SBF back to that or if I unroot using ZergRush will that work??
Please ask questions in Q&A forums.
Thread moved.
I would recommend going back to stock 2.3.4 and rooting using Pete's One Click Root. ZR modifies some system files which borks the update, and while unrooting through ZR will take away your root access, I'm not sure it'll re-modify (or unmodify?) the system files. While it may be another step (and maybe another 5-10 minutes of your time) if ZR unroot ends up messing with the update anyway, you'd still have to do it. Much easier to just start fresh then it is to get halfway through and learn you have to start over anyway.
I was an idiot and did not backup the stock ROM unrooted.

Hence, that is what SBF is for.

yeah the whole sbf kinda scares me...but I'm sure it's not bad I was scared of flashing roms and I've done it countless times now. Will an SBF wipe my external SD card too?? It's just a pain to go stock, root, and restore all my apps again, I know a couple days of work will pay off, but I almost want to stay on liberty and not get the OTA....I've sent my brain into a bootloop today!
if you can flash a rom you can SBF, ain't no thang

No. It only wipes the internal memory. It leaves the internal and external SD cards alone.
For example: with a pc you might have a c: drive and a separate d: and (for the sake of argument) e: drive. Sbfing is like reinstalling windows on your c: drive. It will reformat the c: drive (your internal memory of the phone) but it will leave the d: drive (your internal SD card) and e: drive (your external SD card) alone.
