I was wondering, does flashing 1.83 wipe any data?

I don't know about flashing but the OTA update does not. You do lose root.
I flashed with RSD Lite and only lost Angry Birds! I believe it was due to being installed to the Media Area. Look at your Manage Apps area to see the Media Area tab. After reinstalling Angry Birds I then told it to move so if I reflashed I wouldn't lose again. Gotta love that app! When I did GingerBlur with external micro SD, nothing was lost.

Flashing the the SBF shouldnt make you loose anything but when you do gingerbreak to get root back, it will remove all your apps that were "moved to media area." So before you do it, read the previous post. Go to the media area tab and move everything to phone first.

I Need to wipe EVERYTHING from my phone and start fresh. I have been a flashoholic and now I am seeing weird things happening with my phone. I have flashed system, kernel and PIT with Odin back to original 2.2 release, wiped everything off my SD card, but I am still seeing weird things happen. For instance, wallpaper that was on my SD card randomly shows up on my phone, and it will change to other wallpapers randomly. My contacts from facebook, keep showing up, even after I delete them. I am getting random force closes on Facebook, launcher pro, BLN and titanium backup. I can delete these programs, reinstall them and they seem to work, until I reboot the phone.
So how do i completely wipe ALL from my phone, and start over so I don't see these things happening?
Could it be something to do with voodoo/non voodoo? I think I odin'd back to stock without converting voodoo back, but can't put a finger on it, if that was the cause.
I was looking to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804784 and was wondering if that may help.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
anyone have any ideas? I'm dying here.

That was the first thing I tried, but I am still having issues. The random wallpaper is really confusing to me. It's like there is still some data somewhere that I can't seem to wipe. Could it have anything to do with me doing the above from voodoo and not disabling lag fix?
I used ODIN to go back to DI01, did ota to EA28, then did the ota to ED01. Shut off phone, pulled battery, ODIN cwm-recovery-all.tar, booted phone straight to recovery, flashed Adrynalyne's superuser package (includes busybox), then flashed the EC10 kernel. Phone is working great.

Couldn't hurt just to wipe n rep partition/format (make sure to backup sd card) Odin also has an option to repartition or you can do so in recovery

go here and follow the walk through, it is the only way i know of to get your phone to stop being all wonky. sorry but you have to repartition and start over.

This may be a silly question, but when you are loading a ROM, are you reinstalling apps from Titanium, or from the market?
When the ROM is reinstalled ull restore the Apps from titanium pro or u can also re download them like normal

i just backed up my apps myself (switching to evil fascinate) and astro file manager did it perfectly

Heimdall back to D101 stock with pit file and repartition. Then do the same with Odin and D101. Then, either odin again to 2.2 or update OTA.

I have done this with odin, but haven't tried Hiemdal. Is it different? I will certainly try if it is.
Just pure guessing... on the phone, does
Settings --> Privacy --> Back up my data
or
Settings --> Privacy --> Automatic restore
have anything to do with this?
Will
Settings --> Privacy --> Factory data reset
help?
I have flashed an sbf before to install greyblur and lost all my apps.. i didnt think that was supposed to happen but no big deal. i was able to clean up my apps and got better batt life out of it.
this time i was going to try gingerblur out again since its been quite a few updates. I was on 4.1.57 or whatever rooted and couldnt ota to 1.83. well i tried flashing a .57 sbf and downloading the ota there, couldnt get it to tell me i had an update, so i flashed back down to 4.1.2 that i had from installing greyblur and work my way up through the ota updates. I did so and everything worked perfectly. well i thought...
I just noticed all my internal phone storage has been wiped. completely. no pics no music, no ringtones. i could care less about the music and ringtones, but the pics i really wanted to keep. I have a newborn and quite a few pictures of him that I havent recently backed up. it makes me sick to think they are gone. I have some software to pull data off of bad harddrives and ones that have been formatted over. but i cant seem to get it to read my phone.
first off, is there anyway to recover this? and what the hell could have went wrong to make it do this?
im really starting to feel that this phone is a piece of ****. i already have cracked my screen by dropping it on its side and literally every person i get on the phone with says they cant hear me so i have to yell
/rant
thanks
Yes using a sbf wipes your phone, it is stated many times in the threads. 1.8.3 is the only exception to the rule so far. Also thing like photos of your new born should have been backed up before doing this asthey are too important to lose. I don't know that you will be able to get them back. Sorry.

the last time i flashed an sbf it kept all my files.. weird. this time it didnt.
on a side note, i have gotten almost everything back so far and still digging by using getdataback for FAT
flashing SBF wipes your phone clean but doesnt mess with ur internal SD card. if u use ginberbreak to root then thats the problem. Gingerbreak root is known to wipe ur internal/ext sd card. its always recommended to backup all ur stuff before flashing.

well thats my problem then. damn
sry man.. hate losing pictures of my newborn. been there and done it..lol
I have been looking for a way to root before I go ahead and install the 4.1.83 update. But the only way I can find is Gingerbreak and from what I have read it formats the SDcard.
Is there a way to root without having to lose everything? Why does the SDcard have to be formatted? The two other times I rooted my device there was no formatting required.
It's an unresolved side-effect, not a planned behavior. So it's a consequence of an exploit.
You don't have to lose everything - you have to backup before you use the exploit.
AFAICT it simply wipes the internal sdcard. So backup the contents, use TB to backup apps and data. Then go for it.
First time I did not backup properly and lost the apps (2) I moved to media and the music I'd copied from my pc. Second time managed to retain everything except, somehow, it broken the homescreen links to two apps - though the apps were still present, I have no idea what happened but it was a 10 second fix.
I unmounted the internal sd card before running it, and it didn't delete anything. Ymmv.

I didn't do anything special before running Gingerbreak and nothing was erased...

Excellent, why didn't I think of that - will try that next time!
Thanks.
Nigel
I didnt back anything up and ive done it 3 times now. Each time it only deleted angry birds.

err you can still flash the 1.2.6 sbf than do the frozenfish root with the afterupdate, than ota to 1.5.7 and ota to 1.8.3 and use the afterupdate. it does take up way more time and effort than the gingerbreak method
I discover a way to run gringerbreak
download it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Send the apk to your email (yourself)
open it, download and install
So i have a galaxy S I9000 and im not very hi tek...i rooted my phone so i could download gameboy games and i may have also got an app to delete stock android apps...accidently deleted the stock internet app and now i have no internet....i have tried a factory reset and a hard reset...formatted the internal memory and cleared cache and may have threw the phone at the wall...(china made phone cases cost so little but really do help the average angry person)....im willing to try anything short of sending my phone away to get it fixed or running it over and claiming a new one on insurence...can someone please help
Why don't you just go to the market and download an internet app?

As the previous poster said, you can just download another browser app from the market. Your phone does not depend on the browser app for a data connection. If for some reason you can't do that:
Check the I9k forums and find a CWM flashable, stock ROM. Download it, use 7zip or winrar (or any other windows archive program- google search 7zip, its free to download) and open the ROM file. Go to: system/app. Find browser.apk and extract it to your desktop. Use adb to install it: adb push /system/app/browser.apk and you should be all set.
thanks for that did kinda help...is there anyway i can just remove everything on the phone and re install everything....kinda like re-booting with all the preloaded samsung apps...regardless if i deleted some or not?

No, not really. You would need to reflash the stock system image. Factory resets just wipe user settings, app data, and other stuff like that. It won't restore anything. If you want to do a reinstall, look into using Odin to flash back to stock. Just BE CAREFUL. Odin can brick you if you don't know what you're doing. Better off following the steps I outlined, or installing CWM and flashing a stock ROM. Again, the safest way to do what you want is what I previously posted.
if i updated through kies not a month or 2 ago and im using an australian SGS GT I9K 16BG with optus what would i be running (eg...gingerbread, Eclair, Kernal, Froyo)?
just get an market apk file n install

ok i have fixed everything with odin...i followed it word for word and was really simple 2 downloads and 5 mins and im now on 2.3 gingerbread with all stock apps....used pathikshah .com/blog/install-android-2-3-3-gingerbread-on-samsung-galaxy-s/
I'm stock unrooted and locked boot loader with the latest OTA and just a few minutes ago I went on the market to update "Tip-off basketball" game and it said I have inssufficent memory available..I have 157 ram free and over 1.85gb in the app storage section so I don't know what's wrong. Did the new ota mess something up? My radio app updated perfectly. Anyone else encounter this problem? I updated it again and it went through but had to download the game 3 times total(19mb each time) before it updated. This can be a problem for those on limited data from Verizon.
I'm having the exact same problem, same setup, only it's happening on multiple apps and I even uninstalled several apps to try to get more space. I should have plenty now and it's not working. Also Apps2SD doesn't seem to work at all. No place to move them to even though I have a 32gb microsd card installed and room on the "internal" built in SD card. Please help!
Sorta had the same thing happen with an app I never figured it out but when I re flashed the rom it no longer occurred. Maybe try erase data for Google play as a less aggressive approach first

When I had that problem it was because the odex of the app corrupted. So I deleted it and Bam.

they dont ever tell you this but, its good to do a factory reset after an OTA. it insures that you phone is clean after an OTA.
You will loose all your data. my suggestion to you is just do the htc dev unlock then use titanum backup for your apps and data. relock the phone and do a factory reset.
unlock with htc dev and restore with TI. then if you want you can go back to lock.
EDIT:
forgot dev unlock deletes data. :/

Doesn't unlocking wipe the phone? I think I remember it wiping mine

You can also go into settings then apps and sort by size. Sometimes a culprit jumps out at you there.
Clearing cache and/or data for that app sometimes helps.
