Root, CWM and custom roms in 2012 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed that there are many ways to root your galaxy S2.
In some cases we have the yellow alert triangle on boot and In some cases not..
If you would install a custom rom TODAY, what methods would you prefer?
(i am planning to install paranoid android 2.15)
thank you!
EDIT:

Seems to be XWLP7

- backup ur apps and data
- Install Siyah kernel for S2 using Odin.
- Let it boot up, ur rooted with ur stock firmware then.
- then reboot in recovery, now u have Siyah's cwm recovery (the best and safest way)
- make a nandroid backup if u want to go back to ur old system,
- wipe/data factory reset, wipe cache
- wipe dalvik cache (in advanced settings)
- wipe cache/data/system in mounts and storage
- u can format ur internal storage if u want to start clean.
- then flash zip

I really like Siyah kernel..
And it seems that with this method there's no "yellow triangle alert".
Thanks a lot

Well yellow triangle only comes up when u install a custom rom/kernel with odin, So when u install Siyah with odin i forgot to mention to use Triangle Away app from chainfire it's in the ''original android'' forum
It's actually very easy but there are so many threads to root ur sgs2, u will get lost lol

Why not just make a note of which modem you currently have, (about phone screen, under Baseband version) and download it from here?

I would like to backup my wife's modem as we have the same phones. However I have installed multiple modems found here on this site. None of them are of the same quality and battery life as her modem. I am led to believe that perhaps our provider has modified the KG2 modem to better suite the network. So again I ask....

Very simple,
Requirements:
1. CWM recovery
2. Root access
Once you meet the requirements, let me know

1. Download this file: db.tt/Pj8JuqTh
2. Flash the file in CWM recovery and reboot phone
3. Open your file explorer, there will be a folder named " MODEM_BACKUP" on your external SD , the folder contains your phone's modem.bin
4. Rename the modem to modem.bin
5. Download any modem.zip here: www.veyka.co.uk/radios/
6. Using a zip manager, replace the modem.bin inside the modem.zip you just downloaded, with the modem.bin (your backup).
Now you have a CWM flashable backup of your modem.

Thanks,
I got it to work. Just a couple of notes for future reference. You can edit the script within the zip file to put the bin file anywhere that you like. Also it looks like you don't really have to boot into recovery mode to run this script. I ran it from the terminal under su and the bin file was the same.

s2 screen freezing up

I've been having problemS with my s2 screen freezing up - if I put it to sleep and wake the phone up it OK for a minute then starts to freeze up again! I've had the phone really flashed but it did not fix the problem! So I presume I have a digitizer problem, I want to send it back to Samsung under warranty - as the phone is rooted what would I have to do before I send it back to Samsung as I've heard the phone has a flash log installed so Samsung would know it's been rooted even though I will have it relished with a stock rom?
flash an official firmware.. erase thr binary count thing. There are threads here that could give u the step by step process how.. without the jig ofc. rooting your phone VOIDS your warranty.

Hey all. Um well my s2 just locks up/screen freeze and soft buttons while i brows through forums etc and its getting rather enoying now. It does it about once a day, maybe twice. I tried changing custom roms, kernel and even taken out my sd card. I havent yet tested to see if it does it on stock rom.
Could this be a hardware issue? Or is it a memory leak thing? I dont even know what that is on custom roms lol
Thanks

1. You can try another kernel like Dorimanx kernel.
2. I'll use ParanoidAndroid as an example:
- boot to CWM recovery
- wipe data /factory reset
- format /system
- Flash paranoid
- flash Gapps
- fix permissions (under Advanced)
- reboot recovery
- flash your custom kernel
- reboot phone
Done.
3. If you are using titanium backup,
A. Never restore System app +data.
B. Try as much as possible to restore user apps alone without restoring data.
4 update your apps in Google playstore
done

[Q] Haptic Feedback not working after waking from sleep/standby mode

Hi,
I rooted my phone recently and flashed the latest Siyah Kernel* on it and installed the complementing ExTweaks app. I hadn't played with the settings on ExTweaks, but I've noticed my haptic feedback has gone a bit funny and stopped working. It would be fine when I reboot it, but when I put it into standby/sleep mode and wake it up it stops working. I can change the intensity of the vibrations using ExTweaks, which would get it to work but if I rewake it, it would stop again. So I can gather that it's a software issue rather than hardware. I've tried getting rid of ExTweaks and rebooting the phone but the problem still persists.
Anything (other than flashing the stock ROM) I can do to make it work again?
Thanks.
* (I tried to flash a stock kernel after flashing CF-Root but that bricked my phone so I had to use a microUSB jig to enter download mode, from where I flashed Siyah to get it up and running again. I lost no data and don't know if it's relevant but I thought I'd put this in anyway.)

[Q] [HELP] Did something STUPID

Hey guys, I have a S2 (4.0.3) which was rooted. So I'd got a update today which said it was a small change so i thought it would be 4.0.3 still with root access.. Well after i updated my android went to 4.0.4 and my rooted as went gone!
So my question is how can I root my phone again or delete SuperSU
My kernel version: 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3
and baseband: I9100XXLQ6
I coudn't find my kernel to re-root it I used the root app from: lyriquidperfection

If you don't want to root anymore then don't ROOT at all.

1. If you flash a custom kernel, you will still have root but you will be 100 % safe from the brick bug. You can still get updates
2. If you are only rooted, it will not brick your device. So there is no need to unroot

First, Use the method. When you are done with rooting, let me know.
Don't attempt to do anything else, until i tell you to do so

there is no chance of bricking. When you are done, don't do anything in recovery, just report here.
Method 1 should work fine.
Alternatively, if you are so scared, just flash a custom kernel via Odin
