[Q] How do I root without ruining OTA/Kies updates? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I am interesting in rooting my Galaxy S2, as I want to use an app that requires root access. It is completely untouched in that it is not running any custom ROMs, kernels, recoveries, etc. It is in the exact same state it came out of the box, except for the official 4.0.3 update that was distributed via Kies earlier in the year.
What I would like to do is root the phone without ruining OTA/Kies updates, especially since official Jelly Bean has been confirmed. As far as I am aware that means I can't using a custom recovery method such as clockwork mod. I do not want to flash a new ROM as I am 100% not confident with doing this.
What I want to know then is if there is a way to root the phone whilst maintaining the ability to update via Kies/OTA. I remember using an app called Universal Androot to root my old Moto Flipout, perhaps there is something similar for me now?
Cheers in advance!!
EDIT:
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: I9100NELP4
Kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLPI-CL686447 [email protected] #3
Build number: IM74K.XWLPI

I'm looking at that first method in the first link (the one that relies on busybox and superoneclick). It appeals to me because it leaves my kernel and recovery untouched. That should allow me to update to official Jelly Bean via Kies/OTA, right? Sorry for all the questions, I'm afraid I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to these sorts of things.

The methods in both links will not change your Kernel. So you can just the easiest method.
They will allow you to update when update is available

The easiest way
Because you have stock firmware the easiest way is two use philz kernel its stock based kernel that has more futures than the stock kernel and it automatticly roots your phone. Follow this steps.
1. Download the zip from this link http://www.mediafire.com/?rsfvtscivibt49n
2. After downloading transfer the zip to your "SD card"(not the internal memory) of the phone
3. power off the phone
4. go to recovery by holding the power button, the volume up button, and the home button until the kernel menu comes out
5. Wipe chache
6.choose install from sd card or apply from sd card
7. choose the zip you transfered
8. after installing wipe the chache one more time and reboot the device
now you will se superuser app in the menu. Try going to the recovery and see your new kernel

Does this work with 4.1.2 stock jellybean? (XWLSD)
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

1. go to and download http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1534485&d=1354579840
2. place zip on externalSD
3. boot into stock recovery
4. Flash zip from externalSd
5. select Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip and you should be rooted,
this works on both ics roms and jellybean.
this just flashed the supersu app and the superuser binaries
so this shouldnt mess up the ota or kies.
hope it helps mate

[Q] Flashing kernel and custom rom

Good Day! I would like to flash my SGS2 but have many questions. Phone information is:

CSC I9100OXXKE4

Android: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9100XXKE4
Kernel: [email protected] #2
Build: GINGERBREAD.XWKE7
1. Can I flash Siyah or Speedmod on my phone with no problems?
2. Whats the difference between the kernels mentioned above and cf root?
3. Will flashing my kernel erase any of my files or contacts?
4. When using a custom rom, I can use a kernel that I want right?
You have some reading to do.
Read up on both kernels. The info you want is way too much to give you.
Siyah is a custom kernel whereas cfroot kernels are stock with root Access and CWM.
You could look at ninpo kernel for 2.3.3.
Edit: kernels don't erase your contacts etc.
And yes you can use different kernels with custom roms. Always remember to backup via CWM before flashing.
Good luck.

Brother,
ANSWERS:
1 and 2. You can flash either speedmod or siyah once your phone is rooted with no problems. If in case you encountered the yellow triangle upon booting up, just flash the zImage file from your CF root Kernel - the stock kernel that has root access and cwm
3 and 4. Flashing Kernels will not afffect your contacts or any file unless you flashed into another ROM that is wipe version. Yes, you can use any kernel you want on any ROM
1. Yes.
2. Batley life, performance, BLN, overclocking, so so much more.
3. No.
4. Depends on the ROM.

Hey,
I finally got around to rooting my phone, but I have two probably related questions.
Is it possible to flash a new kernel without a data cable, like cp zImage /blah or something?
Clockworkmod rom manager won't install new roms (or kernels, if it can do that) it always says the zip failed the signature. In this case I'm trying a kernel zip I got from xda, and cm7. I paid for the rom manager, I tried downloading via the app and it reboots the phone and when I press the back button, it says the zip failed the signature, so I tried to clear the cache and redownload, same deal.

[Q] Root GT-I9100 Android 4.0.4 without flashing kernel

Hi I want to root my GT-I9100 without flashing any kernel. I found some thread here to do this on ICS, but I don't know if it is for 4.0.3, 4.0.4, or both?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28178105
stick it in mud for few days probably it might get rooted ...
That's just humour don't take it seriously.. flashing a kernel is one of the way to root and is the easiest way if ur not comfortable with it watch the video on YouTube by galaxys2root because that's the only way u get the super user access...

I've done it such that a CWM.zip file and SuperSU.zip are uploaded to the phone (don't know their original names as I changed them), then reboot into recovery using the 3 button approach which brings up the normal android recovery and select to install from the sdcard (internal or external or whatever applies) then install CWM.zip which will temporarily, for that session, replace the android recovery screen with a CWM one. In my case its a touch screen selection. Then from that CWM install SuperSu. After rebooting you may need to open the superSU app and update the binary (mine may just be outdated though).
The above has worked for 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 but be sure to do research on the hard brick bug involved with flashing on 4.0.4 and if it applies here.
Mobile Odin needs root permission so it wouldn't work while you are not rooted. I haven't tried other methods.
I'd upload the files I have but I'm not sure its appropriate as they aren't really mine to upload... it seems that the files you'd need are among those in the thread you linked to.

[Q] Replacement running 4.0.4 Root?

Hi, I just received my replacement i777 it is running stock 4.0.4 UCLK3 I was wondering if anyone found any problems with rooting with the ExynosAbuse APK? If so I will look in to other ways to root it.
Thanks
As far as I know, that is the only way to root 4.0.4 without changing base. 4.0.4 is known to have the sleep of death bug, so you may want to change base anyway.
Do you want to stay on 4.0.4 or are you looking to root so you can flash something else?

I'm looking into reflashing the prior ROM that I was running which was Super Nexus. So nope I am not staying with 4.0.4
I used it, and it worked flawlessly for me. As others have mentioned in other threads just make sure you read carefully when you launch the app and use it to root your phone and not patch it. I guess that read carefully statement goes for anything you do to your phone. Read once, read twice, and read again before doing anything here.

This is what I did when I had stock 4.0.4. This is what you wants to do:
1. Download and Root with ExynosAbuse 1.40 DO ROOT ONLY!.
2. Download Mobile Odin Lite and download your favorite kernel (Recommended Siyah) that is compatible to stock 4.0.4. Extract it to the root of your internal or external SD. Run Mobile Odin Lite and flash the kernel.
3. Download SuperNexus ROM (your favorite) and flash it using CWM Recovery.
You are done!

[Q] Rooting i9100 4.1.2

I'm trying to root+cwm my brother's sgs2 to bring it back to life (so much lagg).
I've done this with my sgs3 but it's tedious trying to find the right method and files for this particular device.
I have searched these forums but am not reassured that I'm going about this the right way to get the rooting process over and done with as there doesnt seem to be much info on rooting 4.1.2. Better to be safe and ask than to be sorry...
Device Info:
PDA: i9100XWLSD
Phone: i9100XXLS8
CSC: i9100ojvls6
Basebrand: i9100XXLS8
Build: JZO54KJ9100XWLSD
Kernel: 3.0.31-889555 dpi @ dell 228 #3 smp preempt TJ31 14 48 54 KST 2013
Android version: 4.1.2
This thread says I have to look under kernel version for something similar to 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526 but this info seems to have been moved from kernel version with 4.1.2.
I'm guessing that i should use CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OJV_KF1-v4.0-CWM4.zip based on my CSC but don't see anywhere in this thread if I can use this rooting method for 4.1.2.
This thread also asks you to look at kernel code similar to XWLPX-NEE but this does not exist under kernel version on my phone. Now I'm not sure if I should use XWLSD (bootloop fixed) or XXLS8-FOP (Jellybean) as both of these are relevant to my device info.
Or should i use this method and run superoneclick later?
Any clarification would be thanked and appreciated!

use a custom kernel (eg siyah,dorimanx...etc)that comes pro-rooted and CWM installed.
link for dorimanx kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617219
link for siyah kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555259
download the TAR version of the kernel and flash it with odin 3.07.
how to use odin:
download odin http://d-h.st/SdH
boot your phone in download mode (Press and hold the Volume Down key, Home button (middle key), and Power button simultaneously. A warning message will appear on the next screen. Press the Volume Up key to continue).
open odin, click on PDA,choose your downloaded kernel, and start flashing.
hope it helps.
No problem asking, but its not that there isnt much info about rooting, its that there is far too much.
My answer depends on exactly what you want, with a view to present and future desires.
If you want root and cwm you can flash apollo/siyah or philz kernel. You can do it by odin, or see what signed zips are available to use stock recovery.
You should also run a kernel cleaning script.
So what you're saying is kernel version, csc etc. all dont matter as long as its simply an i9100 running 4.1.2 when using the above siyah/dorimanx/phillz methods?
I intend to keep it as stock as possible (my bro's terrified of rooting) until he sees its safe and wants features only available in other roms at which point i'll probably use cyanogenmod with no custom kernels.
My question (how to root when on 4.1.2 for my particular hardware) is probably what most new rooters for the i9100 come to this section of the forum for today. But unfortunately the stickies give you the idea 'do not use this method unless made for your exact device!!'
or maybe its just me...
i think i'll go the philz route for pure stock experience. i have trouble figuring out which version i need based on what my about page says:
XWLSD (bootloop fixed)
or
XXLS8-FOP (Jellybean)
??

But if you just need to root your device why don't you try

No. Do not use Rom Manager on the I9100/T/G/M/P. At all. Ever. It will break recovery/cause bootloops eventually, which will require an wipe and/or an Odin flash to recover.
Besides, any recovery flashed on its own on this phone will only persist until the next reboot anyway, due to recovery being baked into the kernel/not on a separate partition like many other devices.
Flash a custom kernel of your choice = rooted phone + CWM & you can then flash whatever custom rom/kernel you want from there. No need to flash CWM separately.

All good Yeah, Rom Manager breaks stuff. You might get away with using it for a while (maybe even a long while), but in most cases it do the things I mentioned sooner or later. CWM has everything you need anyway.
How do you know what model someone is using ? Ask them.

Well this didn't go at all as I'd hoped even if it could be worse:
-rooted using Philz XWLSD (fixed for bootloop) and confirmed supersu was working
-made a nandroid backup in philz
-did a data wipe>clean for new rom as planning to install cm 10.1.3
-wiped cache & dalvik cache
-realized i should probably make a 'clean' stock version first to give my bro the option of choosing stock or cm
-restored the nandroid and rebooted
Now I'm stuck at the samsung logo on boot. Not sure how to go forward as this is my first boot issue ever after flashing 50+ roms on the s3 using cwm.
Installing cm thereafter resulted in no issues but it'd be nice to know i could go back to stock if my bro wanted

Well i don't really see a reason why the restore didn't work. I would try to make a complete wipe after restoring and than run the backup again...sometimes that helps ...
If no try to flash a custom rom first with the same Android version like ur stock rom and afterwards try to restore ....
It sounds not very logical but i had to do that often :banghead:

Apparently the problem was that philz does not backup the /preload/ partition by default which results in the bootloop. The only possibility is flashing the original fw via odin and trying to integrate that /preload/ partition with my current (incomplete) nandroid. Will need some time to test this as my brother is currently quite happy with cm.
Yeah.....I've run into that preload issue with PhilZ myself........
There is a thread on here by Chainfire for one of his creations called mobile Odin.....it allows you to flash a firmware 'in phone' without the use of a PC or PC based Odin.......
With regards to integrating two partial backups.....I'd be surprised if that worked.....integration IS probably possible..... But then you have to modify the MD5 file in order for the recovery to accept and flash the integrated backup.....from what I understand, the MD5 acts *like* a numerical 'bar code'.......
In the same way that a bar code is linked to a specific product, the MD5 is linked to a specific backup or other flashable zip.....I believe it 'encodes' the size, number of folders/files etc......if the MD5 info is a mismatch to the zip, cwm 'scratches it's head' and refuses to flash it........

[Q] Rooted update to stock 4.3?

Had a note 3 but just switched back to my note 2. I am a super noob, but read for a little bit and had originally rooted and unlocked my note 2.
Now that I am using this phone again should I update the software to stock 4.3?
...and if yes how should I do it? can I keep root? can I just odin MJ9 or ND3?
Here are the current phone specs:
4.1.2
baseband version: I605VRAMC3
Kernel version: 3.0.31
rooted and bootloader unlocked (i think I used casual)
crm recovery 6.0.3.0
OTA updates fail because of the custom recovery, but I still have to defer verizon asking to update software once a day...which is way annoying.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Please don't take any OTA updates. You could lock your phone for life.
@theomms
It’s good that you didn’t successfully take the 4.3 stock OTA from Verizon, because it would have locked your bootloader and there's currently no method to unlock it. If you just want to stay on rooted stock 4.1.2, there are ways to stop the OTA notification. A Google search for sdm+stop+OTA+schi605 should give you some help to stop the OTA prompts. I am still on 4.1.2 running Beanstown106's JellyBeans ROM build 22 and I am really happy with it. You can still grab build 22 for 4.1.2 from the link to older downloads on the Alliance ROM's post #1 (Beanstown106 provides a link to his Android File Host where he has all of the older JellyBeans ROM builds. Build 22 was the last one he did for 4.1.2).
If you think you’d prefer to update to rooted 4.3 stock, then that link that Deeked gave you will let you do that and keep an unlocked bootloader. You’ll probably want to update your recovery to a newer version first. The install instructions tell you to ODIN flash the MJ9 firmware, then use your recovery to install the rooted MJ9 stock ROM. I’ve read where people recommend that before installing the ROM, you should go into recovery and wipe data, the dalvik cache, cache, format the system… and then finally install the stock rooted 4.3 ROM from your external SD card. Also, there’s a build prop edit that you’ll need to do to avoid problems with random reboots on stock rooted 4.3 MJ9 — see this post from Beanstown106 where he talks about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49737536&highlight=ro+tima=0#post49737536
Good luck
