Charging Alarm clocks - Nokia Lumia 920

Been looking around for alarm clocks that have charging and maybe NFC too. I like the JBL but it doesn't have a clock on the front.

That's a great idea. Although my 900 is usually my alarm clock anyway.

I got this one and I actually like it

Looks nice, is it too bright to have in your room or is there a dimmer?
Plus can you view the time if you look at the lcd from underneath, some cheaper screens can't be seen if your alarm block is higher than you in bed

I actually put some tinted plastic on it to make it darker as it was too bright for me. (got like 10x30cm that is used for car windows) cost me about 3 euros. For your other question, that's kind of hard to answer as I do not know how much higher or how far away etc you plan on putting the clock. I can read it from the side but my desk is on the same height as the bed ... if you can give me some more detailed infos i can try and test?
edit: it does have a dimmer switch, it was still too bright for me, thus the change ..

I've actually been considering that same alarm clock / charger. How sensitive is it to the area in which you put down your phone? Does it have to be completely exact? Also, does it only have a single alarm (I assume if it had a second one they'd say that, but just wanted to check).
I do wish they had an all black version though too, but oh well.

Anything in the USA?

Just got hold of this clock. It is very very bright (why the light is always on is mental), viewing angles are rubbish, its very loud, and it will only charge the 920 one way round.
Not worth the money, definitely getting retuned

I also have this clock and find it great.
Viewing angle is fine for me if i set it to high. Brightness really doesn't effect me or my partner and we both hate light =/ so dunno about that...It charges both ways around =/ with the headset jack pointing the line put it on the line. With it away from the line move it 3mm away from the line. And being loud...Well that's what you need in an alarm clock

As mentioned the brightness was also an Issue for me so I simply got a 2$ tinted car-foil and stuck it on + cut it out around the corners of the display. This is close to invisible and makes the screen perfectly dark, at least for me.
In regards to the loudness of the alarm ... well that is something one person likes, the other doesn't. Solution if you want it a little more silent: stick another piece of the car-foil leftovers over the speaker output
Having the clock with the charging feature is more important to me, the need for the 2$ car-foil was absolutely acceptable!

This one is in fact way too bright for me. Even if it's a nice idea, one shouldn't have to tweak the display with tinted car-foil. I use a book in front of it, so the display is a waste...
Having the alarm setting buttons below is very clumsy when you have to adjust regularly the alarm. Alarm doesn't differentiate week-ends. When pushing any button, it shrieks noisily. Try any night adjustment when your girl is sleeping and there you have your alarm!
By the way, the outside temperature measured by the remote gizmo is always 3-4°C above the real one (certified and adjusted thermometer), temperature taken under the same conditions.
Lot of stuff make it good for anything but charging.

[Q] Screen Burn?

I was really looking forward to the GS2 on AT&T, but then somebody mentioned screen burn, and I was just curious how susceptible to screen burn it is? Is it something that I would need to worry about?
I've had my SGS2 since may when it first came out. I noticed it last week when using the PlayerPro music app.
The background is on this app is grey which includes where the status bar normally is. I could see where the battery, time, alarm clock icon and signal bars have burnt in.
Then i noticed i can faintly see the home screen app icons when i pull the notification bar down.
So yes.. screen burn is real. Very disappointing. I'd rather have LCD than this amoled that starts to burn in after 4 months. I'm wondering if this'll be covered by the warranty.
Anyone else getting this too?

Did you leave your screen on for long periods of time? Screen burn in is a 'feature' of amoleds, but I think you've gotta try kinda hard to make it happen...

No I don't have the screen on for long. It is set to 15 second time out. I don't use it that much during the day at work. I never watch movies on it or play games. Just calls, text email and net with a few apps.
What brightness level you use?
I have it set too auto brightness. See attached.
Download PlayerPro its free. you might see burn starting on yours too. also show up in google sky map quite clearly.
I took a screen shot to see if it carried the effect over to my pc.. Don't laugh! The iPad burn works like that. It must be a memory related thing. Anyway..thats not the case on the SGS2
Well if you have auto brightness on, wouldn't that mean sometimes your brightness level would be exceedingly high enough to cause a screen burn? I haven't experienced any screen burn yet, even though I tend to have 4-5 hours of display time watching a lot of videos.
My brightness is at 50% and its definitely got some burn in. Very disappointing.

I don't think watching videos will do make noticeable burn. You need static images to create the burn. Download Playerpro, its free in the market, play a song and look at the task bar area and post back.
You mean when the top screen is covered in gray by the app listing the song, instead of showing the notification bar?
Well I downloaded playerpro and played a song (loca people by sak Noel-in case you were wondering ) and there appeared to be some very faint blobs where the status bar icons are. BUT they seemed to fade after a few seconds, maybe my screen is not quite there yet, but it seems to be heading in that direction.
I dread to think what I'd do if there was burn in anywhere other than the status bar. I think I would die.

Good tune! I didn't notice the burn until installed PlayerPro. It doesn't really show in other apps or homescreens. Hopefully it won't get any worse
This issue is pretty well documented with AMOLED, but really, how long do folks keep their devices around here?
I get a new phone at least once a year, sometimes as many as two or three times a year if I decide to sell/trade/upgrade, etc., so even in the event of some small burn-in, it's not something I'm going to obsess about. My phone is a tool, and it does what I need it to do, and when it doesn't, I get another... and I'm not rich, and I do like to take good care of my equipment, but I expect that there's going to be some trade-offs in terms of design... and I suspect that most of us knew about this AMOLED burn-in issue, same as with plasma TVs, though maybe not all.
Yeah but screen burn is going to seriously lower the value of the phone for a trade.
You said it's a pretty well documented issue with AMOLED, but does SAMOLED have the same issue....or is it different?

Thats all good and weel if you can afford it but most people cant and are tied in to 2 year contracts ive had my phone 4 months and the burn in is terrible i took it back to carphone warehouse and they tried to fob me off saying theyd never seen or heard of screen burn on a phone and to ring samsung so now my phones on its way to them to have the screen replaced under warranty
So for anyone suffering from this issue get onto samsung and get it sorted thats what the 2 year warranty is for
So, how did it go with that screen replacement. Did you get it covered under warranty?

What do you keep your display brightness at?
I left mine on auto since I got it bit now just changed it to 100%. Im gonna see how much worse it is on the battery because the trade off might be worth it for how awesome it looks at full brightness.

I gotta go full on bright at all times. Why buy a phone with an awesome screen and throttle the beauty of it. Plus somebody might be looking over your shoulder. HaHa!!
With both my Captivate and Infuse, I never used auto brightness. I always use 0% unless I'm outdoors, as these screens are really readable even in well lighted rooms.
I keep mine on 100 percent. I dont see the point of having such an amazing screen if i can't enjoy it at full capacity.....

I have the brightness all the way down and its still really bright!
I use auto but at night in bed even at lowest setting its still pretty bright so I use an app called screen filter and dims the screen even lower then samsungs lowest setting. I would think this would save on battery life as well if you were to use this app more often?
Auto. I think this phone tends to be on the brighter side compared to others when on auto. I'm not saying that as a bad thing though, just an observation.

Probably due to the increased number of pixels/increased area. Even with the same output per pixel, the note will be brighter than say an infuse or a captivate because there are more pixels shining towards your eyes.
I keep mine below 10% unless I am in bright sunlight. The screen is easy to read and less brightness over such a large screen means far less power consumption. Just my humble two cents.

I don't think that using the screen at less than 100% diminishes its beauty. Most times, for me at least, 100% is way too bright. Also, using the screen at 0% will show much better battery life. I notice huge drain when using my Infuse at 100% for any amount of time. I can literally watch my percentage drop as I catch up on XDA posts and facebook/twitter. The display is easily the biggest drain of all for any phone, and using it on 100% will drain your battery even quicker. Just don't complain about crappy battery life when it happens please.
If battery life was unlimited and not a factor would you use full brightness at all times?
No, as I said, the screen is too bright at times. Having it at 100% also heats up the phone more quickly.
I keep mine at 100 all the time for the same reason other posters have stated. Why take away from the main selling point of the phone (at least it is to me). I suppose I'm lucky in that I have an office job and spend a good deal of time at my desk during the day. I can always plug in for an hour or two if I need to, but so far with the Note I haven't needed to. No heat issues either.
Like most other things android, it always comes down to personal preference.
How is the text in full sunlight? This will be my work phone also and I need to be able to check e-mails in the sunlight.

Thanks for the reply - this has to be a huge upgrade over my HTC Tilt 2. I have to either find shade or cover it up with my hand. Hopefully with the Note I will not have to put on my reading glasses to see.

[Q] burn in with amoled?

I'm thinking about using my gs2 as a desktop clock over night.
Putting the gs2 in a dock station and using an app which minimize the screen backlight to a minimum.
My question is will the clock burn in?
Thanks

I do that every night.. the LCD goes off automatically after some 30 mins or so.. So no burn ins.. even if it doesn't the screen will not burn..
I want to let the screen the whole night on. The app that I use got this option.

LED based screen generally don't have that problem. The burn in problem is a lot more common in LCD and Plasma screens.Thought if u wanna be extra sure, try to use dark colours for the display, that should keep the screen happy. i have used my screen as a flashlight during some house parties, where in I left the screen on for over 2 hours with bright white background and that didn't damage the screen, so I think u should be ok with low brightness, dark colours (if u leaving it overnight)
It's like this.

AMOLED doesn't suffer from burn-in literally speaking. What happens is that when you have a static image consisting of black colors (in your case the background) along with other colors (the clock, moon image, etc.), the colored pixels will lose brightness while the black pixels are basically turned off, meaning that they'll retain their brightness. So when you view a static blue/grey image (best colors to show early signs of burn-in), you'll notice that the parts where the clock was in the middle are darker than the rest of the screen. So yeah, just buy a cheap clock.

Unfortunately my camera was not good enough to pick up the difference. I scoured youtube and got this picture, and this is exactly how it looks. Vibrant is a bit cooler compared to One S in the picture. But Galaxy S3 display looks exactly the same. What do you guys think?
it's kind of hard to tell by picture but is it possible because your lights are dim? For whatever reason, GSIII default light settings are low...really low. Samsung is being cautious or something...I mean their Auto-brightness future sucks because of this, they make it really dim.
Hmm..Really?! The picture is pretty clear in showing the reddish tint on Galaxy S3 screen. But on that youtube video not a single comment about it. Makes me wonder if this is normal and I guess I am too used to the cooler blue tint on the Vibrant? It has been just a few days I got the phone and exchanging it at Walmart is not a problem, otherthan reinstalling all apps and other setup. But I just wanted to know if this is normal and if so I will be getting exactly identical phone and it is just gonna be a waste of time.

Thanks, your picture gives me some relief. The SG3 definitely has a warmer tone and I think at 30% brightness it makes the whites a little pink. This combined with the fact that I compared to blueish super bright screen of Vibrant may have caused my panic. The brightness of SG3 screen is definitely low, I mean minimum usable is 30% and you have to set it at 50-70% for most situations. Vibrant is super bright where i can use it even at 0% brightness and anything above 50% really hurt the eyes.
My GS3 does not look anything like that, you can easily see the pink in your display.
Defect, return it.

AOD burn in?

Does anyone know if the pixels shift to prevent burn in? Is there proof of this, such as a time lapse video or acknowledgement from lg? Thanks

I don't have the phone myself but from what I understand yes the pixels do shift, try to use the AOD you should see that after a while it will appear slightly in a slightly different position
I had the same worry and was informed that AOD does move throughout the day. I can verify that this is true as I now leave it on with it scheduled to be off 12-5am when I should be asleep. Another tactic I've picked up to help make sure there's no burn in is to place the phone face down when I don't really need to be looking at it. (Such as now while I'm at a computer that will also show my notifications.) The proximity sensor turns off the AOD and it comes on pretty quickly when you pick it up, but not so quickly that you're wondering if it ever did turn off.
AOD does indeed move things around. Nothing seems to stay in the same place.
As for burn-in. I used mine as a sat-nav for 8 hours today and no visible burn-in on the screen.

That makes sense but I've seen people on forums saying that they see the clock moving with their eyes. I don't know whether they are on Nougat or Oreo. I'd be glad if someone tried AOD for 30 minutes and see if the clock moves. I place a piece of paper where the clock ends and it is effective to see the movement or the lack of it.
Don't worry about it. It's also not in max brightness. I own it for a year and the screen is perfect.
I use the digital clock AOD. I notice it shifts between the top and middle of the screen throughout the day. I don't see it moving, but throughout the day I notice it's different positions.

These are the important points.
Burn-in happens when 1: pixels are at a high brightness and 2: they're holding a static image.
It's a common misconception that burn-in happens because of pixels getting partially "stuck". This doesn't apply to OLED displays; what happens is that each subpixel has a finite lifetime due to their organic elements, and will slowly use up that lifetime while on. Running at design voltage and no PWM (e.g. full brightness) will use that lifetime at almost the fastest rate possible, and images that have both dark and light areas will burn in the worst.
This is why store displays, that tend to be blasting at either 100% brightness or (if whoever set the firmware is particularly stupid) full-bright/outdoors mode with a short sequence of static advertisement screens, can burn up even the most durable OLED screen.
As I understand, AOD is fairly dim even on its "bright" setting. It probably achieves this brightness via both voltage and PWM, so the pixels are both only actually powered part of the time and at much lower than design voltage; even if only one of these is true, that means each subpixel is being run at far below design tolerances, with an increase in lifetime as the voltage decreases/flicker increases.
That, the changing time, and the slight shifting of the image means that it's pretty unlikely that you'll be able to get the clock to burn in within a meaningful timeframe. If you're really worried about it, use the dim setting.
Actually My wife's display had some discoloration issues LG replaced the panel is all good now. Me personally I don't use Always on display I like to save battery even if its two percent. Now my HP Touchpad that I use as a clock has major burn in LOL.
