[Q] Which way should i choose? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

Hi everybody
I have installed real ics some time ago, and i found the experience much more complete than with custom
rom...
now i would like to make another step... so i shoul lock my bootloader first...
i read that there are two ways... test point and official sony...
with official sony you lose DRM...but i read also that the only problem tht this lost caused (track id doesn't work) doesn't exist anymore as latest version of track id works even without drm... so are there other problems if we lose drm?
because i think official unlocking is much easier isn't it? so why a person should choose the test point method?
latest answer: i found real ics is amazing rom... but, after unlocking bootloader (if i will succeed to), which kernel should i choose? i would like something safe, stable and fast... and if possible with good battery performance...
thx everybody for answer
hope i did not disturb with this post if repetitive... but i wanted someone to answer me directly, and even if i found good informations in this forum, i did not manage to decide what to do...
bb

i prefer test point method cos with it one wont lose drm keys & wont void warranty.... after bootloader unlock using testpoint, t will still show Allow bootloader unlock:yes but Official way will void warranty.

Indeed, test point method! No regret!

I would also recommend test point method as you dont lose drm keys, I did it with test point method myself because I didnt have a choice, anyways I didnt need drm keys, but some ppl do, so in that case better go with the safe side, the test point even tho it can be a little difficult

When I bought Mini Pro den, I use Test point & no issue but along tha line my screen break & took it to care center but I was told it can't be repaired & was given another one cos its still under warranty... But tha new one I was given can't be unloocked using Test point cos its having latest security so I used tha Official way but was happy though!

When you do the testpoint method, you have to remove the sticker under the battery to get to the actual testpoints.
So you have to do that very carefully, because if they notice you've been removing it, warranty is lost.

oh so many answers
but all of you suggested me the same thing... so i think it's really best choice... i think however i won't need drm... but anyway you suggest me to use testpoint method, finally, not for drm but for warranty isn't it? and is it sure that if i use in right way test point they won't notice i've unlocked the bootloader (so i will still have the warranty)? beause i heared that in england they did not repair some xperia arc because they noticed the users had unlocked the bootloader....
so finally ya suggest me to use that method?
and for the kernel, which one would you suggest (stable, fast above all for telephone use and media, good battery...)
i want to thank all of you however... really ya give me all these answers that i did not expect to... thx a lot for helping me!
bb!
edit: ah sry whalesplaho talked about latest security... so how can i know if i can unlock it or not in safe way?
thx again!

My SK17i testpoint wasn't covered under the sticker. I unlocked using testpoint because of the warranty. I am not sure if they can detect this or not, but its lesser then two evils I guess. If you unlock the BL by Sony method they will have your IMEI in their system as unlocked so no way you can get lucky and keep your warranty. Even if the phone doesn't turn on completely, they know it has been unlocked.

I didn't say he shouldn't try it. I just think it's better to have all the info before doing something.
So if it doesn't work, he'll know why
The post says "Tere is no harm in trying. You can try, if you have new security, nothing will go wrong, you will just get error."

test point doesnt work on latest releases of xperia mini/mini pro/active. If you have 12w17 on the back of your phone, then testpoint won't work. That's what others have said in the test point thread. I only used SE bootloader unlocking and its easy but you lose your DRM.

Bootloader benefits??

with my previous phones i never had a bootloader issue...
this one's quite messed up.
can anybody please clarify the following things that will work after unlocking the bootloader on stock rom -
- facebook inside xperia
- music player like button
- track id
- timescape
if somebody has tried these features after bootloader unlock, please give your feedback
cuz i just can't wait with the stock rom.....
tha track id wont work again buddy......
what about the like button in the walkman player?
havent use walkman.... cant say!
All of them wont work when you unlock the bootloader using the official way. But there is another way which unlockes the bootloader without deleting the DRM security keys so apps like the ones mentioned above still function properly

I lol'd. Sony CLEARLY states that the only things that will not be working will be TrackID (there are apps for that in the market for free), and DRM Protected media. Facebook inside xperia will work, so will Timescape.
thanks guys.....so the lil like button in the music player won't work anymore for me. I absolutely loved it. Well, to gain something u gotta lose something.
I do not want to go by the test point method, cuz it seems quite fishy to me. Messing with the hardware can get u into trouble. I mean, what if sony releases a new firmware like .62 for bootloaders unlocked using testpoint method? hahaha!....well nyways thanks a lot! cheers! \m/

[Q] Xperia Mini Pro Questions

Hello
Just purchased a SK17i Xperia Mini Pro Black Version that is locked to 02 (UK network). I am obvously new to all this stuff but do have a basic understanding but here are some questions:
1) I am thinking of waiting until Android 4.0 is Officially released by SE to update my phone (btw, anyone know when the update is coming). Was wondering when I update will I still be able to root my phone?
2) When I root (if I can) I want to install Set CPU to overclock my phone. However I have heard this drains batteries? Is this true and if so how can I make my phone faster?
3) I need to unlock my phone. Can this be done for free after rooting? If not, can someone link me to the cheapest place I can get this unlocked from?
Thanks in advance to anyone that answers
Hey dude,welcome to XMP family.
1)According to Xperia Blog,XMP will get the ICS update in the end of May or early June, after the first wave for arcS,neoV and ray.I don't know whether we can root it on official ICS or not,but I think to get a rooted phone is easy once you unlock the bootloader, and besides, there are so many developers here.
2)When it comes to overclocking, apparently it would cause battery drain faster. But with my experience,I hardly feel its difference on SE stock Rom.As for custom rom like FXP's,which I has used for a while,it drains about 2~3% per hour while idle(drop speed is two times than stock.)
3)Certainly you can unlock your phone for free, see this thread & tutorial. But it should be noticed that once you unlock it then you may invalidate your warranty.
Mine is on FXP CM9(ICS) and it's kind of laggy, but I can't tell it's because of the ICS rom or existed bugs.As SE said,we may not have the same experience like Gingerbread if we update to ICS.

Hello mate, thanks for the great post
I think I will leave stock ROM once updated actually, seems to be running fine atm as it is.
I think I will still update to the official ICS when it comes out as does look worth it.
Just about no. 3) I think your talking about after rooting, the process to get custom ROMs by unlocking the bootloader? I was talking about the network? lol
Unless I'm mistaken?
Thanks again

There is no way to get your phone unlocked from a network for free but WontanServer offers an unlocking for $15. You can try that out. Just type WontanServer in Google and click the 1st link. WontanServer is legit and won't steal your money
Though as a warning you might not be able to update to ICS as it also might unlock your bootloader. Just double check, as I am not 100% sure. Also it will void your warranty

What do you mean by updating to ICS will unlock my bootloader? Isn't that a good thing? Don't mind about warranty, can have that sorted out but don't understand the bold line mate

good thing in the sense? If you don't bother about warranty then you can try custom ROM ics.but the problem is some bugs are not fixed by developers they will take time.main bug is camera not working..i am using ics so just check k? Good luck

He meant that the Wotanserver network-unlock method might unlock your bootloader (which it does). This bootloader unlock, whilst giving you access to custom ROMs etc, might not behave with official SONY updates (such as ICS) - I'd link you for proof but I'm not allowed to due to my low post count .
Also, Google 'Omnius Unlock'. They will unlock your phone for free over the next few days (Easter promotion). I'm not sure how reputable those guys are though so you'll want to check.
Thanks for that Omnius Lock thing, looks great and will check it out
So, if I unlock it I may be unable to upgrade to 4.0? That is a bit stupid to say the least? Anyone on an Xperia that was unlocked then ugraded to 4.0? Did it become locked again?

If your phone's bootloader is unlocked you can not recieve any official update through Sony as it will brick your phone but you can install a ICS ROM.

Well I'm not sure about 'stupid', you'll have to weigh it up. If you look in the development section, there's already a very useable version of ICS (look for MiniCMSanwich), which is potentially better than Sony's bloatware-infused and themed version (not to mention probably unrootable) due in a couple of months.
I think it's mainly FOTA bricks that happen (over-the air updating from Sony), and some bootloader unlocks allow for this by just patching the bootloader to make it seem unlocked (any SETool unlock will do this). So there are a number of options.
Be careful also of some bootloader methods stripping the DRM keys, these are used by Sony services like TrackID, which will cease to work (permanently) following a bootloader unlock.
Edit: There's a distinct difference between a network unlock and a bootloader unlock, the former will nearly always also execute the latter, but the latter can be done by itself (obviously only on unbranded phones). The method of getting a custom ROM is basically network unlock > bootloader unlock > root > install custom kernel > install custom ROM. Root can be done before the unlocks, I believe.
I'm new to all this too, only trying to explain because I know how much of a total pain it was to work it all out .

So if I do unlock through the Wotanserver place, my bootloader will be unlocked but I wouldn't be able to get official ICS, but a just as good if not better copy? Is the ROM fully stable as in does everything function fine? I have heard of an ICS ROM which stopped HD recording on Xperias. Does this have any such problem?

It is the same unlock method, just everything brought to one place by that app maker.
Rooting your phone before custom ROM installation is not needed, because old ROM(stock) gets deleted anyway and custom ROMs include root already.

exactly, you made it sound so simple
after unlocking the bootloader, flashing a prerooted system.img will also work if you don't want a custom kernel.
Finding this should not be that hard: [Xperia S][INFO][REF] All that u need to know before u begin
Oh.. and unlocking the bootloader will also have some disadvantages like warranty and DRM related things.
Still not easy

Thx man i will try it...
to root i will have to unlock bootloader??
is that really needed?
Arter bootloader i need to unlock also??
Currently it is the only way to root, later on another way will probably come along, but for now you must unlock your bootloader to root your device.
There isn't really much of downside besides losing some functionality in some apps due to the loss of your DRM key. It does not 100% void your warranty, but if you plan on overclocking and it goes wrong, your warranty will probably be voided.

No.
Though not sure what you meant by "flashing official ics". If you meant with flashtool, then answer is still no.
If you meant on using PCC or SEUS then answer depends how you unlock your BL. IF you unlock it unofficial way, with s1tool, then you won't have any problem. If you unlock it via IMEI code from Sony developer page, then you won't be able to use PCC or SEUS until you relock your BL(which is done by flashing 1 ftf file).
And for both official and unofficial way worth rule, do not use OTA updates. For official way, that's 100% correct, while for unofficial way, some report problems, some don't have them.

I don't like OTA, and after you unlock your BL it will be smart not to use it, as we told above.
And if you unlock your BL it's much easier to root it, as I wrote, check that thread I linked in this post and try.

You mean 2 -ve battery pins? Yeah, only connect to 1, it's enough. Or you can also connect it to simcard holder, as I read, people also do that. Point is to ground it, whatever method you want
You're not irritating. Usually I would irritate if someone asks without researching, but as I see you actually research yourself, so it's not hard to answer you
Anyway, for root and CWM, check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678690

Uhhh...maybe because we do not want to lose our warranty???! Anyway, testpoint method is an easy procedure as well...just can't get it to work properly and I have read a post somewhere that models after a specific manufacturing date are not supported by s1tool due to new security measures by sony.:crying:..can someone with experience in this issue please confirm this to me and topicstarter? Regards, andy
