I am picking up a Note tonight to see if 5.3 inches is practical for me or not. I planned on taking it home and immediately putting CM10 or some other AOSP rom on it. I realized though that if I do that, I would probably disable all the stylus features of the phone. Other than not having stylus support, what other things will I be missing out on by flashing away from touchwiz? Thanks in advance.
My stylus works fine, it doesn't have any of the special functions. Other than that and some fun bluetooth issues (which seems to vary from user to user) and a couple reboots now and then. The cm10 roms are great

So what touchwiz apps actually take full advantage of the stylus, maybe I can import them and make them work on AOSP. Also does the note do things such as picture and picture and all that? I watched the video for the note2 and wondered if the note1 had all those features.
I never had a problem using my Note's stylus with apps like Draw(er) and SBMX for the roughly ten to twelve days I was trying out three dufferent CM10 nightlies. Nice as S Memo is, I didn't miss it and I don't think I will when I go back to CM builds.

I'm sure it's possible to augment those functions, but I'm no coder, I'm more of a hardware guy.
As for the picture and picture, I couldn't tell ya. I'm sure someone who's smarter than me can chime in.

I guess my question is, do the current note1 Touchwiz builds have features such as picture and picture? Also I was seeing things such as adobe photo shop or some kind of video editing. I'm assuming since the stylus works we can still grab those apps and they will work fine with it.
The special spen features i.e. Snote and smemo require touchwiz. Having jelly bean is worth losing a few spen features all day everyday. Having run cm10 ROMs for a month or so, vanilla ICS feels dated.
Its not like the pen stops working all together. I find myself using it any time I tinker under the hood.
S-pen, S-memo... but there is a very nice alternative called GNote and it works pretty well. This new Padawan ROM is blazing fast and smooth not to mention at 350mb quite light for a non aosp ROM

So anyone think it'll be possible to port many of Galaxy S III's features to the S II? I mean most of the stuff sounds like software (S Voice, pickup to call, video picture in picture, etc. etc. etc...)
Thoughts?

A lot of it no because our front cameras can't sense you or whatever.. but touchwiz 5.0? Absolutely

I don't see the point in pickup to answer unless you regularly just leave your phone laying around. I personally always keep it in my pocket so I don't see the reason for it. Video picture in picture sounds cool though.

wouldn't that be software control of the hardware (camera)? I don't think it's some special hardware in the front camera.

One might think it would be software control instead of hardware.
When you think about it, what allows our phones to use facelock but software?

Actually the 2.0MP SGS2 front camera has slightly better resolution than the 1.9MP front camera of the SGS3.
TW and the TW framework from the SGS3 would need to be back-ported to the SGS2 for the new Samsung apps to run correctly, if at all.
--L.
The only way to get these features is to have TouchWiz since its so deeply rooted into everything on the SIII.
I imaging at least some of it could but will probably take the Devs a little while to iron things out.

The way I understand that is you can put the phone up to your ear while you read the message and it'll make the call.

I thought that was neat, I use GoSms so I have the call button right there if we cant port it.
The one thing that I would like ported over to our phone is the zero shutter lag.
The S beam or w/e on the Galaxy S3 just seems to use a combination of Wi-Fi Direct and NFC, and apparently allows for transfer of a 1GB file in less than 5 minutes. Can't find out whether it's a new hardware thing, or whether it's just the connectivity of NFC with the transfer being done over Wi-Fi direct or something or another. Either way, some epic stuff.
I would love to have the new touch wiz ported over. I love the interface, and the overall new look and lock screen.

This is a hardware issue not a software issue. The only way to do this is if you were to strip out the camera on your sgs 2 with the s3 one. And thats including the miracle that you don't f*ck up your phone!

From what I have read, the s beam only allows transfers up to 300 mb.

You sure? From what it sounds like, the cameras in the S2 and S3 are identical (we won't know for absolute certain of course until S3 comes out and someone takes it apart, but everything seems to point towards the cameras being the same). The zero-shutter lag seems to me to be a software thing; hell, I thought the zero-shutter lag was something advertised as being part of ICS, as though it would be available to all ICS-enabled phones and not just the GNex which has a worse camera than ours.
EDIT: This article also seems to suggest it's a software improvement (though it doesn't actually clearly say whether the shutter-lag is hardware or software based).
On another note, I would absolutely *LOVE* it if the SGS3 software stuff got ported over
I'd like to see the Siri knockoff come to the SGS II. They can keep the rest.

I've noticed on custom ROMs s-pen is useless far to sensitive maybe this will help. Going to test when i get home and report back. I prefer the tweaking method with screw driver.
Didn't notice any difference.
Really wish there was a way to calibrate the pen more than anything. I'm left handed and the cursor and accuracy of the tip is off making selections very hard. My tablet PC that uses a Wacom digitizer can be calibrated...don't understand why the Note can't have the same thing.
I use blackstar and novena and they both have a setting for lefties. Basically switches the point to the right side.

Anyone using SPB shell 3D on their GN2s?
I have on 2 tablets and can run it on 3 devices with unlimited activation. So far it won't let me activate on my note. I'm waiting for a reply to resolve it.
There is a YouTube video and it looks like the s-pen will work. If s-note doesn't work I'm not sure I'll use this launcher although it is very cool.

I can't imagine why your S-Pen wouldn't work, it's tied to the digitizer in the phone. You will lack a couple of gestures, etc. but get GMD S-Pen Control if you're rooted, it will be even better! I have the launcher but it just doesn't click for me. I feel like by now they should have added a lot more features and settings given how long it's been out and the cost. Good luck.
Thanks for the tip....I just bought GMD pen.

I've used it for a couple of years on previous devices. I ran it for a few weeks on the GN2 but didn't really like it as much as stock touchwiz. So I'm running stock launcher right now. I like it better that SPB, Nova, etc.
Good luck.
As to your problem: have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app?

Any internet website that has the 'hover with mouse' stuff to show extra options. Taking notes in school, sending screenshots to friends.

I'm running Beans also and I use the pen for handwriting notes and hovering over videos I made to see the previews. I think that's hella cool especially when I have iphone users watching me. Cutting and pasting anything from the internet or outlining pictures and pasting those to my scrap book. I love how the notepad pops out when I pull the pen out to jot a quick note. And I LOVE just pulling it out to let everyone in the room know to watch out, here comes my light saber. (Modded the saber sound)

I've mainly used it for marking up screenshots. I like it for gesture keyboards. I always think I need to put forth more effort to use it since I know it's useful!
Drawing has been a childhood hobby that lasted until a few years after college. Since I've gotten my note 2 I started using sketch book mobile and started drawing again. A Lil rusty and the small form factor for artwork takes some getting used to. I'm really enjoying it.

A couple of neat apps I recently came across:
MyScript Calculator
Sudoku - S Pen
not gonna lie..I barely use mine.
I have pulled mine out to show off the phone a few times, that's it. I never use it.
Running my mind ragged whether I should get the S4, the HTC One or the Moto X (or Droid Maxxx) (I know I know, camera. I know.)
What I was wondering was, since the S4 is Super AMOLED, does it have the ability to incorporate the active display that the Moto X has or is Super AMOLED a totally different beast?
Ehh it can.. But it doesn't have the Motos low power chip to handle the notifications and pulse the screen, so any 3rd party app you install to do it, will kill your battery.

Now that you mentioned that, I remembered reading that somewhere else.
It's crazy that in this day and age we haven't yet a phone that can provide 3 things: 1)amazing build quality with loud calls 2) a great camera 3)extremely long battery life/battery saving processing

Agreed, I do like the s4 more than I figured I would tho, signal reception is just as good as the razr hd it replaced, (was worried as every sammy I had before had horrible reception), Battery life really isnt bad and I regularly get 24 hrs with normal use, the screen is absolutely beautiful, performance is great, and the camera just blows the razr hd's away. I miss being unlocked sometimes, but I thought id be returning this and ended up keeping it.
I live in a rear apartment. Reception I believe will always btw horrible bit o believe that build can decrease reception, rendering awful reception non-existent, so I think that may be my number one priority. I have two kids and I love the S3 camera... maybe I'll get the S4 and put a GE Rom on.

It hasn't mattered to me that much since usually when I get to flashing roms on a phone it's because the stock rom is god awful slow, but this phone is so fast it doesn't bother me. I can imagine a nice rom on this runs pretty sweet though.
I just hate hate hate touchwiz. Also.I can do without the gazillion extras they added.... I really don't need so many tricks for the camera. Just hood hardware and snapseed

I hear you, I dont use any of the extras with this phone, and nova went on before the end of the first day, already froze most of the TW stuff, I do like all the stuff the camera can do, but as long as the AOSP cam can take good pics Id be ok with that too, the TW cam does take some pretty nice pictures though Been quite impressed actually.

I think the hardware is solid... so any software lumped on to pilot it will do well. I tend to like the uncluttered look and feel of the stock camera. I am going by today to check out the s4 again. If the X is really out one the 29th, it would give me one day to make a decision in order to take advantage of the $50 + $10 off coupons.

Really don't think you can go wrong between the two, I had actually picked this up because I sold my Razr HD, and could not stand using the LG Ally backup phone I had any longer, knowing I had 14 days to decide I grabbed the S4, and its what im gonna keep. Good luck with whatever you choose!
