[Q] Button Macros - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone... I'm loving my new sgs3, I have rooted it and installed CWM but I haven't seen a rom I like yet... this is due to button macros. I was originally A sgs 1 user with the 4 carrier buttons and the drop to 3 is something I'm trying to fix. I was wondering if there was a way to recreate all the functionality that was in the sgs 1 buttons.
long press search = voice
long press menu = keyboard
long press home = multitasking
Now since the search button is gone (R.I.P.) I was wondering if any ROMS used a long press on the back button to create the global voice access. I'm assuming there are not so I was also wondering if there was a form of button marco app or something to recreate it... or if anyone could give me a noob's guide on button addressing so I could modify CM to get back button search... Thanks again everyone, I know I'm living in the past but I just miss my global search access.

[Q] Remapping hardware button for app switching

I've found many threads to remap buttons on devices, but I couldn't find any way to remap holding what the home button does.
I would like to change the search button to switching apps, instead of holding the home button. I've heard of APP_SWITCH, but that only shows recent apps (like gingerbread). I'm on a ICS rom and would like that functionality on the search button.
Thanks in advance.

Moving to Q&A
I'm looking for something like this for days now.
i now where i can change the function the search button is doing, but i have no idea to what i have to change that..
For someone with knowledge it shouldnt be hard to find out what a long home press is doing (script wise) and then we could just change the function of the search button..
I hope somebody with know how reads this, because its a great idea for, example the nexus s

[Q] Disabled Capacitive Keys - all but Home

I started this in another thread but I thought I'd drop it here in case anyone else wants to work on it as well. I didn't see another active thread so please flame if this isn't in the right place.
Being on tablet mode full time I wanted to disable the capacitive keys. They're not in the way or totally useless, I simply wanted to see if it could be done.
I've managed to disable Menu, Search and Back on mine with an older Honeycomb trick I used on the Galaxy Tab. I just now started monkeying with this on the Note and I've yet to disable the Home button without also disabling waking with power button.
Root Browse your way to "system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl
Place a # before the following lines (commenting them), save then reboot:
key 139 MENU
key 158 BACK
key 217 SEARCH
I've tried changing key 102 and key 172 to disable the Home key to no avail. Commenting 102 seems to have no effect and commenting out 172 disables waking with the power button.
I'm no developer but it seems to me that the Home key and the power button are somehow linked. Maybe someone that has a firmer grasp of what they're doing within the OS can give some insight?
Hey thanks again for this find.... Just a quick question.
Does this method work with any ICS ROM? Also I'm just curious which ROM you are using and want to hear your recommendation.
Thanks again

I haven't tried it on a GB ROM but I see no reason it wouldn't work there or on any ICS build. From what little knowledge I have of how this works I can't see why the key bindings would be any different from ROM to ROM, as long as it's for the Note. For all I know the same lines of code could be the same on any number of Samsung devices.
I'm currently on DAGr8s The Hybrid_RCIV and enjoying it very much. Aside from having to pop my SD card whenever I install an app it's the bee's knees.

May have to also edit some of the other key layout files. Like ffa, not entirely sure what they all do, but I have seen home key in done of the other layouts.

Just an FYI - I was able to disable all of the keys using melfas_touchkey.kl on the new CM9 Unofficial release. Power still works.

Where can I get that file and where do I put it on the phone?

Menu button remap

Nova launcher has a feature that lets you remap the long-press of the menu button to do among a number of things, one of which is bringing up the multi-task menu. Anyone know how to make this happen without using this launcher. I've tried editing the file in key_layout but it didn't do anything.
Same type of issue here. (first time post / newb by the way). I'm looking to use a long press of the Back key to act as an alternate home key (but would accept long press of menu key as well). I've tried Nova Launcher, and it can be configured for a long-press of the menu key to go to the "default" screen, which is kind of like having a home key, but it doesn't work unless you are on the 1st level screens (for example it doesn't work if you are using an application, this it is not truly a home key). I've never rooted before and am worried about trying it on my brand new S3 and what it means to warranty. Thus was hoping to find a way to get what I want without rooting, but something tells me I won't be able to. Also, I really didn't want to change to a special launcher like Nova yet, I just want a capacitive home key option. I don't like physical click keys plus my home key is harder to reach now with the case that I have. Not sure what to do next. Willing to consider rooting if it the process can be made fairly idiot proof. BTW I'm on Sprint which is not the exact phone as yours.

Rooting is fairly idiot proof on the International SGS3 but you may well have major problems if you are in the wrong forum and flash the wrong firmware for a different model phone like the USA models .

Thanks, appreciate that. I figured as much, but thought the ideas would be similar
Actually what I think would be a more ideal button arrangement for me would be as follows (since my goal is to have a capacitive home key)
1) short-press Menu button would function exactly the same as the physical Home button
2) long-press Menu button would function as the Menu
3) short-press Back would function as Back
4) long-press Back button would bring up a Search screen (kind of like long-press Menu does presently)
I for one am glad that Samsung kept some buttons (like the menu button), instead of going to the true 100% ICS experience.
Maybe I'll switch completely over to the Sprint Galaxy S3 forum in order to avoid any confusion.
cm10 has implemented the button remap feature. now you can easily change the menu button long press to recent apps in cm10

[Q] Help needed, remapping physical buttons.

Hi,
A while back I bought a neat little toy from Singapore. It's a dual core 2,5 inch Android phone.
There's just one thing that bothers me. The "alt+tab" physical button actually acts as the menu button.
I've looked around a bit and been trying to figure something out but so far I'm stuck.
The phone is ready rooted and is up to date on that front, I just need some help editing one of the files in /system/media/keylayout, I think.
Here's a picture if there's any doubt on which button I mean. It's the button to the left: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0uo8er3nb5reocm/IMG_20150711_175617.jpg?dl=0
If I do succeed in changing the action on this button will the apps automaticly add the onscreen menu button? Or is there a way to make long-press the now remapped button to have another action so I don't lose the ability to get menu dropdowns?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.

Change on-screen softkey navbar button actions on Stock ROM?

Hey guys, got a quick question. I have a Leagoo M8 which uses softkeys for navigation. Now normally this is OK, but for some crazy reason Leagoo decided that it would be a great idea to completely change their actions. Currently they have the following actions:
Tap Recents button = Menu
Long Press Recents button = Search
Long Press Home button = Recents
Typically softkeys have the following actions:
Tap Recents button = Recents
Long Press Recents button = Nothing, or Menu
Long Press Home button = Assistant
As someone who has used nexus and other devices in the past, this behaviour is really annoying. I don't want to have to reply on Xposed or Root as there are apps which I want to run that do not allow root, so I'd like to change this on a ROM level.
The ROM I am using is a debloated stock Android 6.0 ROM which is mostly stock Android, which is available here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/6-0-lazy-s-debloated-rom-leagoo-m8-t3574816
I found this thread that explains how to change the look and feel of softkeys, but am I right in saying that this doesn't apply to changing button actions? A long time ago I remember that there used to be some XML files that could be edited which changed various button actions, but that would have been for Android 4.4, and I'm not sure how much different Android 6.0 is. If anyone would be able to point me in the right direction that would be super appreciated :good:

Ah, interesting. I've tried editing the config files with a text editor in the past and never had too much success, but something worth trying :good:
Alright, quick update. I updated Generic.kl but it doesn't seem to have any effect. I think it is only for physical keyboards, whist the Leagoo has softkeys. Any other ideas?
