Which kernel shall I use for root - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I want to root my Galaxy II again after the update to Android 4.0.4.
My phone's data is:
PDA: I9100XWLPW
PHONE: I9100XXLQ6
CSC: I9100DBTLPI
Which kernel shall I use for rooting my phone again. I only found a CF-Root Kernel >CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPW-v5.5-CWM5.zip< containing a .tar-file from May 2012. I believe, this is an old file and not for use with 4.0.4. But what ist the right kernel? Can you help me?

Why not go for a custom kernel like Siyah, Dream Kernel or Dorimanx? Those can be installed via Odin too.

Flash a custom kernel NOT Cfroot inorder to stay safe from the brick bug.

Upgraded to stock 4.0.3 before and rooted, can i upgrade to stock 4.0.4?

Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question. When I first bought my UK unlocked I9100, it had Gingerbread on it. I then upgraded to the stock 4.0.3 ICS and then rooted with CF-Root v.5.4 LP7 as per instructions posted here on XDA.
Here are my current stats now...
I9100XWLP7
baseband version: I9100XXLPS
kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7-CL340913
[email protected] #3
build number: IML74K.XWLP7
CF-Root v5.4 LP7
Yesterday, I got an automatic notification on my phone telling me there is a software update. I'm assuming this is the same thing as the stock 4.0.4 firmware posted on these forums...
I9100XWLPT
Base Firmware: I9100XWLPT (4.0.4)
Region: Europe
Country United Kingdom / Ireland
Carrier: Unbranded
Build Date: 27 July 2012
Modem: XXLQ6
CSC: XEULPA
Change List: 941023
Can I upgrade by hitting OK on the phone to the automatic update or by doing it through Kies? Will it break the root, or worse screw up the phone because it was rooted? If it just undoes the root without doing damage, how would I re-root? If it keeps the root intact, that would be the ideal situation.
Thanks!
It will break root. But if you make update, never use CWM on stock kernel (hardbrick bug enabled).
You can re-root by flashing CF-Root.

Thanks for the quick reply. So if I stick with stock firmwares and CF-root, I don't have to worry about bricking, right? I assume the instructions in the first post of this thread is what I need to follow...

Thanks again.
can't he not just use KIES in order to update safely to 4.0.4 ?

From what I understand, I can either upgrade via Kies or flash the same firmware that's listed in the forums. And then when I root, I take it I follow these steps...
Instructions For Rooting ICS :
Extract the Rooted Kernel
Open the included Odin
Put your device into Download MODE
Click PDA and select CF-Root-SGS2_*-v5.3-CWM5.tar
Then finally click START!
From this page...

does one need to re root every time there is a update ?
sorry if this is a silly Q but this is my first android based phone

From the info you provided, you are running ICS 4.0.3 ROM.
Technically, there is no risk if you flash any custom kernel before flashing paranoid.
However, I'll still advise you to flash Siyah kernel via CWM recovery, for smoother sailing. There is no need for you to flash other firmware, you are God's with this one.
Let me know if you still have other questions

[Q] My phone has a special build?!

Hey there,
After 2 years I've decided to root my SGS2, Ive been through flashing with nokia's and that kind of things. However, Im a total NOOB in android rooting.
My problem is the following:
I've updated my phone to ICS 4.0.4 (biggest mistake of my life).
Now I've searched everywhere to find a root manual for my Firmware-version, but I keep coming up with german sites (I'm Dutch).
Google translate does its work like a piece of sh**, so I've lost all of my faith.
After some crappy translating, I read something about a hard-brick of this firmware.
My question is: Wich version is safe to root on my phone?!
Info about my phone:
Carrier: T-mobile
Model: GT-I9100 (ofcourse)
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband version: I9100BOLP7
Kernel version: 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Fri Aug 24 17:36:36 KST 2012
Build number: IMM76D.BOLPM
I hope my question isn't a dumb one, if so, I'm sorry!

Flashing Siyah will also root your phone. Just make sure you use the correct version of Siyah for your model and version of Android.
You do not need to root your phone to flash Siyah kernel.
When you flash Siyah you will get root. Here's what you do:
#download siyah kernel
#Boot phone to download mode
#Open Odin and connect phone
#put siyah kernel .Tar file in PDA section of Odin.
#click start.
It is extremely difficult to brick your phone flashing a kernel in Odin.
Good luck

Thanks! I used the PhilZ method before seeing this, and worked great!

[Q] Which Firmware for downgrading?

A friend of mine wants me to downgrade his I9100 (4.0.4).
Currently it says:
PDA: I9100XWLPW
PHONE: I9100XXLQ6
CSC: I9100DBTLPI
Build number: IMM76D.XWLPW
It is a German DBT phone.
He would like to downgrade to 4.0.3, but I don't know which firmware to take.
I found PDA:I9100XWLPI CSC:I9100DBTLP6
and PDA:I9100XWLP7 CSC:I9100DBTLP5
Does it matter which one I take?
If not, what's the difference?
Thx in advance.

XWLPI is more recent that XWLP7 so it should be more stable.
Thank you mate.
Flashed the more recent one through odin. No problems so far.

first at all, use the search field ...
your thread is going on " which one is the best kernel " be careful dude.
XDA-devs is a site about so much options, we all have to try out our excperience, you have to try out your experience with kernels and roms on yourself, search for how to root ICS i9100 in the search field
