Sleep of Death is back - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Last night I docked my Prime for the night to recharge. I left it sitting there opened. After a few seconds I noticed it reboot. "Oh great!" I thought to myself. After it came back up it fell back asleep, I tried to wake it up but it had turned off. I let it do this again to confirm, then I unplugged the charger. Again I left it open, let it fall asleep, and again it turned off. Now, if I close it this will not happen. On .28 I would get an concessional SOD when it was closed and charging. I thought JB had fixed the issue until I discovered the bug last night.
Anyone able to reproduce this?

Do you have an SD card in the dock? If you do then it is a known problem that was also on the tf300 and was patched there so should be patched here also soon. If you do have one in there try taking it out and see if it still happens.

Is this on the official ota? you could try doing a factory reset and see if that fixes it.

I have a similiar problem, my prime reboot itself after it went asleep for 15-20 secs and I have SD card inserted in th dock. I tried your suggestion (removed the SD card) and I was lucky, the problem disappeared. Thanks!

My TF201 when goes into sleep mode WITHOUT dock I cannot wake it up....

I have this issue, and it has been happening since the last ICS update. I'm out of options to try, so I'm sending it to RMA to see what happens, hopefully it gets fixed before my warranty ends. I have tied down my problem at least to the battery meter thinking the battery is dead, then shutting down since the device thinks the battery is dead. Once I rebooot the battery shows normal and the battery stats shows a severe crater in the graph when the battery was thought to be dead.

Prime turns itself off

[Q] Rezound wont charge a dead battery

So the past two nights iv let my rezound battery go dead. The problem is it wont charge a dead battery. It charges if there is some battery and its on but when it is dead it is dead. The fix was I had to put the rezound battery in my tbolt to get a little bit of juice.
Any ideas or similar problems? I am unlocked with the htc unlock tool and running nils business sense?
Could it be a rom bug?
Don't let your battery die. It's bad for it anyway.
Sent from the Rez Beast
Once the battery is dead what does the LED on the phone do? If it blinks for a while it is either too hot or too dead to turn on, but it can still charge eventually. If the LED is not coming on at all I would pull the battery out and connect the charger with no battery and see if the LED comes on. If still no luck, get a new charger.
Blinks then Charges
I had the battery die on me once (on a prior battery and prior rezound). The phone will blink orange for a WHILE (I tried 3 different chargers not knowing what it was), but eventually started to charging. I think patience is needed. If, after 15 minutes, you still aren't charging, then that's something (but longer if the phone was also hot).
If I hit he power button with or without the battery in the led will light for a short time. I had it plugged in all night and no charge. I used two different plugs.
As for not letting it die. I know its not ideal but I couldn't help it.

+1. Same thing here.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
I let my phone die completely once. I freaked out that my phone wasn't charging. I went onto HTC's site and it said that it could take 20 or more for the led to turn on while charging if the phone was completely dead. Just plug it in and be patient. It will charge and the led will eventually turn on.

I had this problem too, and am a little concerned I have a defective phone
So I had this issue happen this weekend. My daughter was using the phone when it died. Couldn't get it restarted. (I am unlocked via HTC, stock ROM with bloat removed. Phone is a week old.)
After messing with it using the factory charger/cable and other chargers/cable combinations I got nothing. Light would only intermittently come on for a second or two then go back off.
I charged it over night with the factory charger/cable. Didn't work the next day. Charged it all day and night with my old charger/cable that I know works. Didn't work.
Tried multiple variations of taking out the Battery/Sim/SD card and using the plug-in chargers & CPU USB variations with no success.
Luckily, I had ordered a new spare battery and it came in the mail before I returned the phone. Plugged it and it started up fine.
But my concern is that my phone is not properly charging. I have also had other similar charging/battery life issues that raise concern.
As far as not letting it die, **** happens and phones die, if this is a reoccurring problem, that in my mind is pretty unacceptable. A phone should charge when its plugged in no matter what. I may end up returning it to see If just got a defective phone/battery.
My phone will turn on then off and im starting to think it has something to do with the battery. But when it started it was in tue yelllow on the status bar, now i have it charging without being turned on and the indicator light is on but hopping mine will fire up soon. This all just happened to me within the last two hours lol, already called verizon to get a replacement but still going down there tomorrow.

--I agree, but once it gets down to 5%, why not just turn it off knowing the problems people are having so wide spread now.
Under the exact same conditions I have had the same problem with a warm battery reboot. It seems to occur when you are talking on the phone and let it die. Once it dies the phone will not reboot. My wife has the exact same phone. When I put her battery in my phone the phone works fine. My wife’s phone dies every night and she simply plugs it in the wall and it charges no problem. Again the conditions seem to be related to the battery dying while it is hot. If the battery dies while the phone is cool and not used then it seems to reboot no problem. I will go to Verizon tomorrow to look for a fix. I will let you know what happens.
I'm also having this problem but i can return my phone because i unlock it or can i return it ?
Check and see if your battery is 3.7 or 3.8v . I wonder if it is related to the charging issue with the 3.8v battery some people seem to be having.

I had this happen, and here is what worked:
Unplug charger
remove battery
plug charger in
insert battery (while charger is plugged in)
I got an immediate orange LED and after a little while I was able to run the phone back on.

I had the same issue with my OG Droid. Would kill the battery and it would stay dead, even after a whole night of charging. The above method seemed to work for me.
I make 100% sure mine never goes totally dead after an experience I had with my Droid Charge.
I accidentally let it die completely (I fell asleep when it was almost dead & it ran all night). The next morning it was off, I put in a fully charged battery & it fired right up but started FCing like crazy. Every single thing I clicked on force closed immediately, I had never seen anything like it.
I was running a custom ROM & kernel & had done a nandroid BU the day before. I restored the BU & the phone ran perfectly again, but that scared me enough that I made darn sure it never happened again LOL........

Holy ****!!! I think I may have found the fix! I have had the same exact problem as everyone in here. It seems to happen once I root. My Rezound would die completely, then after plugging it in, the light would come on for 5 seconds or less then shut off. I plugged it into my computer and Windows makes the USB Connected sound, so I figured something is happening.
I went into my command prompt and *adb devices*. It showed my device, but says in recovery mode. I then *adb reboot bootloader* and the bastard rebooted into bootloader! From there, I chose "REBOOT" and it fired right back up! Anyone who is having this problem, please try this and let me know if it works for you!
***UPDATE***
It appears when the battery dies all the way and then doesn't charge, the phone is automatically going into recovery mode even though nothing shows on the screen. I had my SIM card out when I tried this the first time, then when putting my SIM back in, it started doing the same thing. But again, it was going directly into recovery mode. This time, I tried a simple *adb reboot* and BAM! I'm back up and running! Again, let me know if this works for you, or if you need help doing this, let me know.

Yes... HTC phones never charge "powered off" When you turn it off and then put it on the charger, it is actually entering/booting a special screen off recovery mode during charging.
CWM recovery on the rezound has trouble charging a completely dead battery.
Use Amon RA recovery.

I think if you look at other threads you will see you are not alone.
It is still early but there are many that are having issues with this update.
My theory is that the shutting down is from the battery dying due to increased battery drain while it is sleeping. I am hoping to get a better idea tonight when I leave it to sleep.
Same here. But today I had my Prime shut down for no reason after long sleep, took me longer then usual to start it back up again, battery was not dead, still at 60%.

Not shure that this is the problem because i left mine in sleep it charge overnight, and this morning it was stuck in sleep. I do agree that battery life does seem much more limited than before.
Same Issue Here
Mine is doing the same thing! Never had this issue until the most recent OTA. I even tried a Factory Reset but think that made it worse. I called Asus and they recommended charging it to 100%, turning off Sleep, let it drain all the way down and see if the problem continues. I am guessing this will not work but worth a shot.
fixed
The new .14 update today fixed it.
Installed. 14
Just installed. 14, will see what happens. That was a fast turn around on another OTA!
I have 9.4.2.15-20120221 installed, but I still have the problem.
When I put the tablet to sleep mode, it randomly switch display on (after 3-5 minutes), than sleeps again. After a 30 minutes it suddenly shuted down.
still shutting down
I have the same issue at this point and time. Is there a solution to this problem yet?

Have you updated your Prime to the latest firmware? The latest firmware is 9.4.2.21 for U.S. Prime users.
Have you tried a factory reset? That often helps resolve different software related issues.
I do have the latest firmware installed, the one you are mentioning. But havent tried the factory reset. Will try that know. But what about the applications I bought after I do the factory reset?
So I tried the factory reset and the problem persists. Even if I set Wi-Fi off when tablet is asleep it seems that something related to this is causing the Tablet to shut down!!
It will still happen randomly for no reason. Anyone has any updates on this?

SOD's are common on ASUS devices. It's related to their kernel power management and attached devices in some cases. Mine will do an SOD when it's in deep sleep for an extended amount of time, but since it doesn't deep sleep on the charger, I just leave it be when I'm at work on the charger and everything is fine, or I shut it down. Every rom uses the stock kernel and so far the two devs for custom kernels may not have fixed the issue completely either.

[Q] Battery displays 0% even after full charge

Hello,
I tried searching for this issue but came up with nothing. I have an issue with my new TF201 where the battery shows 0% several times a day even though there is still power. As a result, it tells me to "Connect to charger". I know there is power because I continue using the prime without charging and eventually, the battery usage shows the correct charge at 85% or something. The issue repeats throughout the day.
I am pretty sure this is a software bug but I cannot find a dedicated thread to this issue. Is this a known issue? If so, can you forward me to the official thread to it?
Thanks.

I actually had the same exact problem. I feel like it has something to do with the battery sensor or something. Anyways, mine eventually stay at 0% and I could no longer charge the device or do firmware updates. Anyways, I have sent my to ASUS for repairs and hopefully all will be dandy afterwards. Good luck with yours.
I got this on my evo 3d after installing a superalpha ics rom and a superalpha kernel. I think its software.

I hate to bump this thread, but did you resolve this OP? My Prime started doing it too. Rebooting, powering off for a few hours, even leaving it with the screen on till it completely drains itself didn't help.
Everything says battery status is unknown, when I have the keyboard dock connected it usually will show the percentage remaining on that, but it seems to occasionally just jump to a lower percentage throughout the day, rather than slowly sink as it tops off the main battery.
I hope it isn't hardware, my Prime has been great otherwise, I'd hate to have to send it in.
I can't embed the pics due to my low post count, but I attached two screen shots. Any ideas? I'm not rooted, running update 21.
Just an update, I accidentally dropped my tablet last night as it slid off my motorcycle seat while I was putting my helmet on, when I picked it up the battery gauge started working again.
And to repeat an age old saying, if it ain't broken don't fix it
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA
I don't mean to bump the thread, I just wanted to post an update in case anyone with a similar issue finds this thread. After my last post, my Prime worked fine for a few weeks, it would randomly switch between the battery gauge working and not working, then one day the tablet died like it was out of juice. I'm not sure what happened, but the only way the tablet would still work was if I plugged it into the wall power outlet, and the moment it was unplugged it would die. I couldn't even use my keyboard dock, as it would start booting, then right before it finishes booting it would shut off like it stops accepting power from the dock for a moment.
I ended up contacting Asus, they issued me an RMA, and about 2 weeks later (most of that shipping back and forth), I had received my Prime, but repaired good as new. The paperwork was vague, so I don't know the actual cause of the issue or what was repaired, but it has been flawless since I got it back. I personally suspect the connector for the battery came loose, and based on how rough I was that day would determine how seated the connector was, until it came totally out.

[Q] Prime won't wake up from sleep (different from the Sleep of Death issue)

I was psyched to avoid the random reboots with the .13 update for the TF201. However, I have a new issue, which I haven't seen mention of in this forum. Overnight, my Prime won't wake up from sleep. It's not the Sleep of Death, because I've got it plugged in all night. (though I do have that too, when not plugged in).
What happens is this: After charging overnight (or several hours), I press the power button, and it doesn't wake up. That's it. Any number of presses, and nothing happens. I have to hold the power for 10 seconds to get a reboot, at which point it works fine, and shows full battery (it was plugged in all night, recall).
If I put it to sleep for short periods, it wakes up fine. But overnight, no wakey.
Has anyone else seen this, and do you know if this is a known issue that Asus is going to address?
Thanks,
I thought this was the sleep of death issue. I have been having this problem since the .13 update. It takes about 10 minutes or less for me on sleep for it to occur, plugged in or not. I had no problems before the update.
This is the sleep of death issue. Gary said if the testing goes well, there should be an update by next week or sooner. I have the same problem as you, weather plugged or not after more than an hour or so in sleep it will not wake up.
I was really lucky, my prime had no problems (only the GPS one)BUT after the last update ive been having the exact same problem as the OP, i guess in order to fix the problems from some transformers prime they created problems for others
I've been having a sleep of death issue with the latest update, .21.
I pretty much always keep my Prime docked in the keyboard. After long periods in sleep (at least 2 hours or so) the Prime will not wake up. This happens both while on the charger and not.
I haven't tried taking it out of the dock overnight, yet. I guess that'll be my next step.
Anybody else having SoD issues in the .21 update?

It was docked when I charged it.
I hope they fix it in the next update.
Just turned on my phone from overnight and it seems to have no "SoD" you guys are experiencing. I didn't leave it docked though.
Yep. I'm having the damn SoD problem too now. I've had no problems until this! Argh!
I've got SoD after .21 too
For now I've set it to never sleep and wait for next update when the problem fixed.
Me too.

I've been having this since the latest update as well. It happens whether it's on the charger or not. So far I haven't had it out of the dock long enough to know if being docked has anything to do with it, but I do know that removing it from the dock once it happens doesn't clear the issue. However, I did notice that if I go under Settings > ASUS Customized Setting > BATTERY SAVING and uncheck MobileDock Battery saving mode, it doesn't seem to happen. After I did that it didn't happen for about 36 hours, but as soon as I re-checked it to test, it happened the first time it went to sleep. Maybe a coincidence, but prior to that I couldn't make it more than a couple of hours without it happening. Might be worth a try as a work around if you're having this issue.

[Q] Screen flashes on the battery screen but never charges

Hello everyone,
My sgh i777 (running one of the UCLE5 semi v# ROMS, can't remember which one xD, on siyah v3.4.3) is having a strange problem. What happened was, I put my phone on the charger on my desk, and my sister had a friend over and were messing around. Well I found my phone later in the day on the floor, and it seemed like it was more scratched then. It was still plugged into the charger at the time so I tried to turn it on. However, when I turn it on, the grey battery screen with the loading circle shows up for less than a second, and the screen turns off. Then it will do that again, flashing this screen until I unplug it from the charger. Not matter what I do, it will not get past this screen, and actually, after the screen flashes a bunch of times, you wil stop seeing the battery screen but merely a flash of light on the touchkeys and maybe the screen. I am pretty sure it is not a problem with the charger itself, and I think it may be a problem with the battery. However, my friend had an issue with his Droid (first one) where the charging port on the phone was broken and he had to use an external battery charger to charge the battery, and then it would work fine. To me, the port seems like it is not damaged, and since when I found my phone on the floor it was really hot, I really think the battery just died. I am also fairly certain that this problem is not a software issue, considering I have not tweaked anything on my phone for a few days now, and since it was working just fine before I found it on the floor. I would appreciate any feedback that you guys can give me because, like everyone else, this phone is my baby
Thanks!

Try pulling battery for a few. put it back in. try to get into CWM and wipe cache and dalvik.
Who knows how that happened. But if you have CWM or D/L mode, your fine.
I had this exact same problem on my phone (minus ending up on the floor part). I think it is from the battery overheating. Pull the battery and let it sit for a few. I had to let mine sit out for almost 4 hours before it turned back on. It may not take that long but i would leave it out for at least an hour or 2.
Thanks for your feedback! Yeah I left the battery out of the phone overnight and when I woke up I tried it again and it still did the same thing :/
I want to get an extended battery anyway (I think I'm going to order the qcell one) and if that fixes the problem that'd be great, but if it isn't a battery problem and it could be fixed now I would love to hear how so I am not out a phone until the new battery arrives ;D
Will your phone turn on when not plugged in?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
No it won't even show the battery screen when it isn't plugged in. It only does that with the charger. Also it won't even have the flicker of the touchkeys, just nothing haha.
Try to get another fully charged battery from a friend and see if phone will turn on, or if you have an external charger, charge up a battery and see if it turns on

I tried a different battery from a different phone (although it was still a samsung phone and the battery fit right and everything) and the same thing happened >,< nothing would happen unplugged, but as soon as I put it on the charger, the touchkeys would flash, and the screen would flicker at certain intervals. Unfortunately I think this is a more serious problem :/

Same happen with my friend I9100. Power Controller gone. Only service center will help.
Seems like your USB ports are bridged. I had this exact problem. If you're under Samsung's warranty, send it to them and they'll replace it. If not, MobileTechVideos could fix it for you.... Though if you're on a custom ROM then I assume you must put it to stock before sending it out to Samsung...
I got it to work haha. Go figure the one thing I did not try fixed it. -___- I was reading through some other threads and found a guy with a similar problem and he said that he left the battery IN the phone but left it UNPLUGGED. Well I did this overnight and sure enough this morning it worked xD
Reading is wonderful!
Glad you got the problem resolved.

mine was unused for a few weeks too. I thinking its just the battery might actually go to a battery store in my city to get a new one.
