[Q] Kernel Flash with Odin doesn't work - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an international SGS2 with CM9 on it. Everything was stable, but sometimes it just shut itself down and started up again. I couldn't find the reason for that. Anyway, yesterday i played around with the rom manager, it said there was no compatible CWM Recovery for the device. I did a nandroid backup, just as a security precaution.
As i booted up the phone after that, i tried to open an app, as it freezes and shut itself down. I tried to boot up again, it went straight into recovery mode. Restoring the backup didn't work (MD mismatch) and some other weird error messages appeared. I couldn't even mount the sdcard or wipe the cache.
I then decided to flash over a CF-Root Kernel (CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-v5.3-CWM5) with Odin. As I started the process, it stuck with the Label "KERNEL" and didn't go on (screenshot)
That stayed for over 2 hours until i shut the phone down (good idead? :S)
I tried the same thing on a laptop without any drivers (installed them new) and with another CF-Root and a CWM Recovery alone, all with the same results.
I don't really know what to do now, as i can't flash anything or enter CWM recovery.
I hope you people can give me some input.

The only thing i can do is go to download mode. Then, when i try to flash any kernel (just tried siyah), right after the green progress bar is filled, it stops and does nothing. See screenshot: klick

CWM is buggy?

Hey,
Just got this phone, I root and unlocked using CF-Root.
I also Downloaded Rom manager and used that to flash CWM, but then I found out that CF-Root came with CWM so I reflashed CF-Root using ODIN as CWM was acting very strange.
Now whenever I go to cwm and I select REBOOT SYSTEM or BACKUP AND RESTORE, it does not work and I just get a logo of CWM and nothing else.
To get phone back to normal I have to take out battery......
Is CWM like this on this phone or something wrong with my cwm?
Thanks
Do not use rom manager, it does not work with our phones.
You use the home button to select, not power. Or the other way around
oh ok, i think its working now

[Q] Broken recovery, bad kernel, and id10t error

Last week I flashed LD3 for my Galaxy S2 i777. Today I was going to flash CM9. Every time I tried to boot into recovery it just started the phone.
I figured I could use mobile odin to flash a new kernel and it would fix it. Like an idiot I used a Gingerbread kernel on my phone running an ICS rom. So of course my phone froze on the "Galaxy S2" screen.
I couldn't boot into recovery and freaked out because I couldn't boot into dl either. I ordered a jig but kept fiddling in the meantime. I found that if I hook my phone to the USB, wait for the battery charging icon, take the battery out, then hold the down button it would boot into dl mode. Then I had to put the battery back in before I clicked continue or else it just reset.
Ok, so got into DL mode. I grabbed the stock rom and kernel from XDA site and flashed them with Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432 (can't post links yet).
The phone starts and setup mode begins. It shows the android figure and says click it. Now all kinds of errors pop up telling me different google services weren't working and force close. When you click the android figure it goes to setup wizard screen but nothing happens (except more android service errors).
Can someone help me out here? I've been at it 5 hours and searched this forum high and low. My thought is there are some ICS elements left behind in there it is trying to load, but I could be way off.
I still can't boot into recovery mode, just DL.

Did you do a full wipe before flashing the stock rom and kernel?
I did not do a full wipe. How can I go about that without logging into recovery? I'm googling that now but if you have linkage I would appreciate it.

dont need to wipe when using Odin/Heimdall.
To OP:
there is only factory recovery, no CWM, you could always just flash a kernal from the DEV section, get CWM, flash CM9.
If I flash another kernel wouldn't I still have the same problem? I'll go ahead and give it a shot. Any you recommend for any reason or other?

So let me get the straight...you're on unrooted stock right now? If that's true, you should:
1. Do a factory reset from settings.
2. Use Odin to flash the Stock with Root package.
3. Use Mobile Odin to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah.
4. Use CWM to flash what you want after that.

recovery is in kernal. If you flash a kernal from the DEV section you'll get CWM recovery, then you can flash your CM9 that you wanted, after a wipe data/factory reset.

Yes, but if he flashes said kernel with Odin, it'll trip his flash counter. I'm just telling him the safe way to do it, Mobile Odin.
I've already tripped my counter. I have a jig that will be here tomorrow so I can use it to reset the counter.
I can't use mobile odin because I can't log into my phone. I can only use desktop Odin.
All the files I am digging up look like .zip made for cwm. Could someone help guide me towards a kernel I can flash from desktop?

Either Entropy's DD or Siyah. You can open the zip and extract the zimage; the zimage is the kernel.
I just tried using Syiah:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367800&highlight=cf-root
I still get this message:
"The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. please try again"
I can't get past the setup screen.
And I still can't access recovery.

Flash the return to stock package from Odin again. Something must have gone wrong with it the first time.
well thats wierd. Sorry man but are you doing it right?
vol down and power. hold it untill the screen flashes twice.
I flashed stock 3 times now. I couldn't get into recovery before this (manually or with rom manager) and still can't. It starts like its going into recovery then just resets and loads normally.
Down is for dl mode, up is recovery.
I think the lack of ability to boot into recovery and the android service errors may be related.

Forget recovery. You shouldn't be worrying about recovery until after you get your phone booting.
New thought: maybe your download of the stock package is corrupted. Try to download it on your computer again. Download the one with root. If that fixes it, you can go use Mobile Odin to flash the Siyah kernel.
To get into recovery hold down both volume up, volume down, and power button and don't let go until recovery comes up.

I have been using the rooted. The fully stock won't dl. This started because I flashed a gb kernel instead of ics. Maybe I should try flashing an ics kernel instead of stock gb?

[Q] SGS2 Bricked on ROM 1 after downgrading from JB 4.1.1

Hi,
This is my first post so i apologise if its in the wrong place. I have been running ICS 4.0.3 for quite some time and decided it was time to try a different ROM. I installed AOKP 4.1.1, gapps_jb_signed with Siyah kernel S2.4.1.5 ( i think). After a few days it kept hanging etc and switching off as i would expect a build in development to do. Anyway i flashed a new kernal to change the look (dark demonoid or something like that) and then rebooted. My phone was now properly bricked like i'd never seen before and would'nt even go into recovery mode. After a day or two of trying everything I could to get it to at least boot i flashed Siyah kernel knowing that it had a dual boot option. Low and behold it worked but only in the 2nd ROM mode where i was able to restore my old ICS 4.0.3 from Nandroid backup. The problem I have now is that when i try to do a factory restore/data wipe from within CWM it gets stuck at the data wipe point and eventually shuts down.
I have tried mounting and unmounting emmc, eft, system, data etc and wiping clean everything but to no avail.
When i try to restore the nandroid backup onto the 1st ROM partition it hangs when installing data and I have also tried reformating the data from within the dual boot options of siyah kernel. Nothing seems to work. Have i fried the chip or something? or am i just missing a procedure. My phone works but only if i keep it on siyah kernel and boot into the 2nd ROM option where i have ICS installed..
Any help would be appreciated.

hi mate.can you please mention which roms you were using in dual boot?well yo be honest dual boot ain't a good idea.if you would ha e asked me.i would have recommented you not to do dual boot itch.anyways, coming to the issue.how did you try to flash rom while you got brick?which kernel you had?

You were trying to change the look by flashing a kernel? I'm sorry, but that doesn't make sense. Also you really need to know which ROMs and kernel version you're on. There are ROMs compatible with siyah 4.1.5 and ROMs which are not.
Mention all (correct) details of your roms used and the kernel you're on. Maybe there's a solution there and someone will be able to point out if you've been doing something wrong. Dual boot is perfectly safe. I've been using siyah+ dual boot ever since the day I first rooted my phone and never had a problem.

Hi,
Sorry if i'm using the wrong terminology. If you hadn't guessed im pretty new to rooting etc and thought that changing the kernel also changed the theme/appearance. Anyway im currently running the following:See attachment. This only boots up on the 2nd ROM option. I cannot boot anything on the default 1st ROM and cannot even do a factory data wipe reset of the 1st ROM as CWM just hangs.

My advice to you would be this:
1. Boot into recovery.
2. FORMAT cache, system, data and internal storage.
3. Boot into Download mode.
4. Flash an "all in one" OFFICIAL 4.0.3 firmware package using Odin. Place this in the PDA section and do not touch anything else.
5. Once it's finished flashing your device should restart and you should be good to go. With a clean, stock firmware.
Let me know if you have trouble

Hi, Thanks for your help. I tried the above but when formating data it just hung and then eventually rebooted. I flashed the stock ROM anyway and now it just hangs at the Galaxy SII start screen, i even tried flashing it twice but that didn't help. I have also tried doing a factory data wipe from within the stock recovery after the flash but this still hangs and never completes. Is there a way of formating the data on the phone from within windows using a terminal emulator or something like that?. I have ROM Toolbox Pro on the device which has a terminal emulator as well if thats any good. For now i'll have to restore my nandroid backup I made this morning. mick

Hi, Sorry for the delay in answering i have been away for a couple of days. I flashed a stock rom with odin and it flashed OK and I got a green pass but when my android reboots it gets stuck half way through the install and then crashes and then never gets past the galaxy logo boot screen. I think the kernel must install OK though as after flashing the stock ROM i lost my dual boot option and the phone was bricked again. The only way i can get it working again is to enter stock recovery and install CWM zip, then install superroot & busy box and then flash siyah. This then gives me the dual boot option in CWM recovery where I can restore from nandroid and reboot into the 2nd rom. The problem only happens when i am trying to install a rom in ROM 1 slot (default) on siyah. Whatever ROM it is it never gets past the data part of the install.

Flashed CWM with ROM manger now cannot leave cwm

Hey guys, my friend decided to flash a custom rom, asked me for help, so I told him to get rom manager and install cwm first.
He was rooted already, not long after telling him. To use rom manager to get cwm, he messages me telling me he is stuck cwm, it seems that every time he turns in the phone or restarts he cannot leave cwm at all, he also claims he cannot get into download mode, keeps taking him to cwm.
I got him to and re flash cwm via cwm, but it gave him an error.
Has anyone heard of getting stuck in cwm before??

Get your friend to read the stickies in general, before he flashes anything else and destroys his phone.
Follow the guide to restoring to fully stock using odin on his pc, it might enable the phone to boot normally.

Unable to install any softwre outside of Odin. Please Help.

[Solved]
I am unable to flash any roms through cwm, and can only do it through odin. Flashing through cwm results in the phone not loading past the boot logo.
I formatted sd card in cwm, thinking it would only restore to factory settings, not knowing it would completely wipe everything.
From then i was unable to even see the boot logo or recovery mode, but luckily download mode still worked.
So i flashed the stock rom through odin, but it still plays up. Now the battery doesn't last more than 1 day, and constantly freezes.
Now whenever i install anything in cwm, as soon as i reboot, it goes to the bootscreen and freezes. I have tried at least 5 different roms and the same story each time, So each time i have to reflash stock rom with odin.
So any ideas to why this is? any help is appreciated. I have tried ultimate kernel wipe cleaner , or whatever it is called as well.
[Solved]
I just reflashed stock ICS in odin, and ticked the 're-partition' box. the repartition file is called " u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit ". Now it works good as new and I'm currently running PACman rom on 4.3. gg guys.
Just to check, but you have factory reset after flashing the new ROM from CWM right?
Try these steps :
1. Flash ROMNuke script by hawkerpaul. (it's a ROM nuke, not just a kernel nuke)
2. Flash ROM in CWM.
3. Boot.
I know it sounds simple, but that's got me out of a few odd bootloop /failed flash situations. Give it a go.
Then, if that doesn't work, re-download the ROM which you're attempting to flash & try again.
One more thing, what kernel are you trying to flash the ROM from in CWM? Try a different one, say siyah. I've sometimes seen where a particular kernel won't flash but another will for no apparent reason.

it was stock ics cwm i think?, also another thing when I install a new rom, when it shows the progress bar, it goes up to 3 quarters then it skips the rest and says update completed (I just tried Romnuke and same story). I have also tried siyah kernel and it just freezes at the siyah kernel instead. Im currently stuck on stock ICS 4.0.2
Not sure what you mean by 'stock ICS CWM'?
And just to make sure, you definitely have an i9100 right? Not a variant, i9100g etc? Just asking as 4.0.2 was never released for i9100, only 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 (stay away from that one)
So now, re-download the ROM which you're attempting to flash, and try again after the ROMNuke script. Does the script run successfully? Or does it have errors /messages which indicate it didn't run successfully?

All good. And also good that you have an i9100.
Ok, so have you tried the things I said?
1. Try flashing from a different kernel (your choice, try one other than Siyah)
2. Re-download the ROM & reflash with Nuke script then ROM.

5 months later I found the answer when messing with odin. What you do is tick the 're-partition' box, and then in the 'pit' sections you need the partition file i guess, for the i9100 its called u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit . hope this helps anyone else who may have this problem
