Hi all, I was just wondering (and this could very well be a ridiculously stupid question, I'm sorry) if there was any way to make it so that AT&T cannot tell that one is using their Galaxy S2? I want to give the phone to my dad to use but we don't want to add another data plan to our family account. I know that when a SIM is in an AT&T smartphone, they can tell what phone it is, and will promptly add a data plan to the line. Is there anyway to prevent that at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
In short, no. Its required to have a data package. But I've heard of people being able to get around this sometimes.
Even if you turn data off completely they will know it's a SGS2 by the IMEI and attach a data plan.
Data plans should be pertinent to the contract for the phone. I would assume that by unlocking the phone and just popping his sim in it, he'd be just fine. Could be wrong, though.

I believe as long as the IMEI is in AT&T's database, they will be able to recognize it and attach a data plan. Although, I've always wondered if they flag your account only if they see any data activity. I've done research on this before, and I've read people getting letters saying at&t will put them on a data plan for having a smart phone. Not sure if they were using any data at all though to begin with. My wife currently has an i777 and she's just using it as a tablet basically (without a sim card inside it). At&t has a feature phone on file for her with data block. I was thinking of putting a sim into her i777 and see what happens if i just keep data disabled.
If the phone is in their database like the i777 is, then they will add the plan automatically after some time

Wouldn't it be essentially an off contract phone for the new user, though? I'm honestly curious about this. I pop my sim from my i777, to my nexus pretty regularly, and I definitely only have a single data plan charge for the i777's on contract plan.

Is the nexus unbranded?
Edit: Actually, it wouldn't matter. It's the same sim card being used.

Has nothing to do with a device being locked.
If AT&T sees a device on their network that they have exclusivity to then they will add a data plan to your account. Completely different than swapping Sims between phones when you already have a data plan. Off contact or not, if they see the imei touch their network the plan will get added. Don't think it happens immediately, but it will get added. If you want to use a smartphone on AT&T and not pay for data you have to use a phone that is not in their database.
The galaxy nexus, any unlocked Rogers phone, unlocked devices that work on AT&T networks. Any gsm device that AT&T does not have in their lineup
Raise yer mizzenmast and swab 'er poop deck!
Ps. Stop thinking about your plan in terms of contract being tied to a device. It doesn't work like that except in blackberries.
Just because you bought a phone on contract does not tie you to that phone and your account is not really tied to that phone. It was just a way to get you to sign a contract. You could have signed a contract and not bought any device. Device and contract are not mutual
Pirate beat me to it. Was gonna say the same thing lol.
You can buy a phone on contract, sell it and pop the SIM into your old phone. You won't be able to get warranty repair on your old phone, but this scenario process that your contract and plan are tied to your SIM and not the phone itself.
Phone companies don't make their money off the phones, they make their money on the contract.

Thought I'd drop this here as an fyi. I'm friends with some people who work for AT&T. If u ask nicely, they may change out the IMEI number they have in their database for your phone with an IMEI from a non smart phone device. If u turn OFF your data and never use it then and only use WiFi, my understanding is they won't tag u for a data plan. I've never tried it....but a friend of mine did and didn't get nailed. You'd have to kinda be friendly with the AT&T rep tho

Couldn't you just take out your sim card, put it in a feature phone, call up at&t and give them the IMEI of that phone? That's what I've done, but haven't dared to put the sim back into my other i777 yet.

No, the second they ping your phone your ****ed, it'll default back to the i777 . Haven't you read threads of people messing up their imei on their phones and ATT stopping service to their phone because of no or a blacklisted generic imei. Try it out, put your sim in a older phone and check online on your ATT account,it'll show that phone after awhile. Then pop the sim back in your i777, and after some time it'll recognize your using it again.

I assumed that's what would happen.
My wife is currently using my old Samsung Focus without a data plan. AT&T even at one point mentioned that they know she has a smartphone, and they didn't do anything about it.
if you mistakenly wipe the EFS folder the IMEI goes to a generic GSM IMEI and that will prevent them from recognizing it as a i-777. i mistakenly wiped the EFS folder on my galaxy tab and popped my sim in it and used it as a phone for a while...

do you have phone insurance?
Oh duuuude...
you should definitely call t-mobile and tell them. they can lock the phone by tracking your IMEI or something, rendering the phone useless (that is, if the guy isn't a tech wizard). As for getting a new phone, if your insurance covers it, then you should ask them for one. I doubt it, though, because every time I wanted a replacement phone, I had to send them my old one.
they may not be able to locate your phone w/o the sim card in there. if you have the box with the imei or ssid number, that would be your best bet.
..
sure, by buying one...there is no way to get a replacement without insurance....and even with insurance you had to pay $130...

Without insurance, if you came to my store or called CARE we would be able to see how long it's been since you purchased your Vibrant. You would probably get a very minor discount, if any. You're pretty much close to buying one outright so it's best not to use any kind of early upgrade unless it's a good deal.
As for blocking an IMEI, I don't know why people continue to suggest this. I have never been able to call in an get a phone blacklisted or blocked after it's been stolen. Maybe they just don't like me or I'm calling the wrong people.
Some ideas for your next Android. On our store demos we either install Lookout or SmrtGuard. Lookout seems to be the better of the two apps because you can remote activate GPS and track the phone. However, with SmrtGuard you can setup SIM Guardian that will register your SIM and when someone inserts another into the phone the phone will send a text to a number you assign or an e-mail. You can also track with GPS by this app.
Again, I've never been able to get T-Mobile to track a phone for a customer just because of theft. It has to be a serious crime with the police involved.
I'm sorry to heard about your lost phone and I hope you can get a replacement.

T-Mobile doesn't track phones without a court order, and u wont get that unless you were robbed beaten up and probably almost killed.
Its the thieves phone now welcome to GSM.
130 deductible to get a replacement. Call assurion for that.
Happened to me, BTW. You're sol and nothing anyone else says here that is different has a chance of being true.
Tell assurion u lost it, cause for stolen phone they require a police report (no the cops will not try to find ur phone, either)...
Cdma carriers block esn. GSM carriers make more money. With phones being easily factory resettable you have to tether yourself to a GSM phone to avoid getting pwnd.

Yes that word is offensive, even if using it towards a thief, it is still offensive. You don't have to be gay to take offense, you just have to have common sense. I don't like that word just as much as I don't like the N word.
I'm sure there are Android users from the LGBT community who use this forum, and they don't need to log on and see the F word.

That doesn't matter. The factory reset option in Android is too easy to get to, and too easy to perform. It isn't even password-protected. The 3 button method can be done 5 minutes after swiping the phone on the way to the local library to list it for sale on CraigsList.
The only way to make sure someone can't profit/benefit from stealing your phone is to not use a GSM carrier in the United States. Use a CDMA carrier.
The companies care more about their bottom line than what's right. I had this argument with Assurion and T-Mobile when my phone got stolen.
Even with a pattery lock on the phone, unless it's a hardware locked phone it only takes 5 seconds for them to completely wipe the phone clean, pop their SIM card in, and brag about the new phone they got for Christmas.
9/10 the phone ends up getting sold, though.
The carriers are more than able to blacklist the IMEIs, but without inter-carrier cooperation that is kind of useless.
So wait a minute. I can lose my vibrant, and I can report it lost and T-Mobile nor Assurion will block the IMEI? Someone on T-Mobile can find my phone, put in their SIM card, and T-Mobile will do nothing? They won't block the phone? They won't even call the person who is using my phone and kindly ask them to return it?
Well I don't really know why I'm asking, I already know the answer. I've lost a T-Mobile phone before, and they admited someone was using my phone, but they said they couldn't do anything about it for me, not even a courtesy call asking the finder to return it.
T-mobile has a record of every single sim card that has ever been placed into a phone. Even if you stick your sim card in there for 5 seconds, as long as it registers on the network, they keep the sim info documented.
It just shocks me, even at a customers request, that they wouldn't block the IMEI number on their own network.
Well, I have jumped ship from the Aria to the Galaxy s2 and wanted to find out if I could give this phone to my mom to be used as a simple "dumb" phone - she has no need for data, texting, or any networking other than simple phone calls - her existing flop phone is craptastic and on its last legs. I have her line as a third number on my account, but it is only voice. If I turned off all the mobile connections and removed the data APN, would ATT be able to detect it as a smart phone and force a data plan onto that number? It is rooted and running CM7 if that matters.
Thanks,
T
Yes, they can tell it's a smartphone, and they will force you into a data plan even with data disabled on the phone. I'm not sure how that can be legal but they do it anyway.
That sucks. Do they key in on the IME number?

You've been lucky then. I'm merely stating AT&T's official policy that all smartphones must have data plans, regardless of whether you are on contract with them or don't use any data whatsoever. There have been numerous posts over the past year or so here about AT&T customers being forced into data plans. However, there have also been mixed reports about some people being forced into tethering plans when attempting to tether for free through rooted/jailbroken devices, and others have been able to tether constantly without anything happening to them. I have no idea why AT&T's systems detect it for some people and not for others.
Although, even if you do get forced into a data plan, all you have to do is switch the SIM card back into a regular phone then call AT&T to have them remove the data plan and you will either not be charged at all or be charged a very small pro-rated amount. So there's really no risk in trying it.

Their systems already check your IMEI automatically for other reasons. When you move your SIM card into another device, you can log onto the AT&T website and see that it shows the updated device attached to your phone (I think it takes up to 24 hours to update though).

I've been using smart phones without data plans for nearly 6 years now, starting with the Treo 650, then the LG Incite (WM6), and now the Aria.
When I upgraded the phones, I simply put the old SIM into the new phone - never heard a peep from AT&T.
Maybe I'm lucky, but I have something on my account called "
Smartphone Exclusion", which I believe came with my plan on my first Cingular phone.
I have data opt-out on my feature list as well.

I called Verizon and everything is correct in the system (the sim card and phone are married in the system). Once I power up the phone to activate, it sits at the activation screen.
Any ideas on what to try? Verizon seems to think I bought a dead phone... I thought I was getting a pretty good deal - good seller ratings on other phones... etc.
Thanks for any help.

First, look and make sure the SIM card you bought isn't a Verizon/Vodaphone SIM but that it is a 4G LTE card, it will say it right on the card, if it is, go to myverizon.com, sign in, and reactivate your old phone, sign out, sign back in and reactivate the Rezound, make sure you enter the MEID correctly, and the 4G LTE card serial number correctly. Reinsert the card in your phone, put the battery back in, and, Please make sure you put the back cover back on the phone, it's required for reception on our phones, and let it boot up, it should activate automatically.

I got the sim card for the Rezound at a Verizon Corp store. I was told by Verizon tech support that the verizon server is waiting for a response from my phone. I think he said a haul response or something like that. The tech said he could see the first responses from the phone but it wasn't going any further in the activation process.
How would I know if the ESN is black listed?
How would I reactivate the old phone? Would I need to go and get a different sim card? I had to get a different sim card because the Galaxy Nexus sim card is a different size than the Rezound sim card.
Thanks for all the help.

If it's the right SIM card, you won't have any problem with trying to reactivate it, after you deactivate it by switching back and forth, I've done it a dozen times. Doesn't sound like a bad phone, I mean stolen or a bad esn, or the tech would have told you, it just sounds like a hiccup during activation. **** when you reactivate the Nexus, use the card that came with it, not the new one! Then reactivate your Rez with the new card

I bought mine new, i did have trouble activating at first, but i did reboot n it finally did, and theres a site u can search for that tells u if ur esn number is blacklisted or not
Be aware that you have to have 4G service to activate the 4G devices. When I got mine new it was when the nationwide 4G outage was going on and it wouldn't activate until it was back up. Make sure it's not set to CDMA only and that mobile network is turned on.

When I log in, I can see the link to activate or switch devices. My phone and number are grayed out with a "pending" status. Not sure how to get the pending status removed to reactivate the Nexus. Thanks again for all the help.

Not trying to argue with you at all man, but it will still activate in a 3G coverage area, and you're right to make sure the mobile network is turned on. I am a recently former VZW sales rep and Tech specialist, I market transferred and after waiting six months for my transfer to be approved, getting replies that they are working on it, I jumped ship. The outage may have been what messed with your case, but 4G devices can be 100% be activated in a 3G area.

Maybe make that call back to Tech support so they can remove the pending status, ask them to reactivate the Nexus and then try activating the Rezound again. But let them enter everything, and stay on the phone with them til it's up and running

This is good to know! The VZW rep told me they had to have 4G to activate. I told him that was the dumbest thing I had ever heard. So I just left with it not activated and my Incredible not working either. Nitwit. ;-)
I was on my eris tlkn to verizon tryin to activate my rezound, and it didnt activate til i got off the phone wit em
So I bought a L9 T-Mobile last Saturday to use it with simple mobile but always get no service, I go several places that repair phones and all say was a bad sim so I bought a new one and same thing happend. I go to another place and say that my IMEI can be blacklisted and when he check says is blocked and reason is STL. I check here at home and says unlock... Im asking is there anything I can do to use this phone? I read that changing roms cmay also change the imei but I'm on 10g so means I can't root it yet.

Changing the IMEI on U.S. soil will land you in Federal Prison for a long, long, long time.
On a good note, I don't believe that T-Mobile has implemented IMEI blocking yet. Are you sure the device is for T-Mobile? Does it say T-Mobile on the top right corner of the glass? If so, try your sim in another device. If it works you may have a bad device.
What is the Firmware version and Baseband version?
You can try doing a factory reset.
Here are instructions on doing this: http://www.resettoo.com/hard-reset-lg-optimus-l9-p769-to-restore-factory-settings. Good luck.
Yes have the T-Mobile logo. I bought it from the girl next door on my vacation on Florida. She say she bought a Galaxy 3 so didnt need this phone anymore and give it to me for $150 and since I have a mytouch 3g slide I obviously accept but use mini sim and wait till I got back and bought a mini sim just to find that dont work.

I don't have my L9 handy. Maybe someone with 10g can confirm the same baseband. If it is different, that may be the issue.
Would you be able to have someone with a T-Mobile sim try it in your phone?
Not yet, thinking on going to T-Mobile and check, if works then transfer my number to them. Would suck change $40 to $50...
Symptoms of an IMEI Blocked Device
CANNOT:
Dial 611 to reach T-Mobile customer care
Make/Receive Calls
Text Messaging
Data/Internet
Use any tools or menus such as calendars, contacts, etc.
This is taken direct from T-Mobile.
I can verify for you whether or not its blocked if you like.
I PM you the IMEI, hope is not blacklisted... Is a good phone and I dont wanna use like an MP3/Video.
Also I check and I can open the tools like contacts, calendar, etc.
Wow! I was not aware that T-Mobile is already blocking IMEI. Thank You for the info.
Worst case scenario is you may be able to use one of those sim unlock services on Ebay to unlock it for AT&T.
The phone supports the 1900Mhz 3G band for that network.
There are plenty of pre-paid carriers that use the AT&T network. Net10 is one of them, and they have unlimited everything for a good price. Good luck.
Oh I didnt knew I can have 3G outside T-Mobile network. I might have to try that. Will keep update on what happend.

Yup we got the same data... also as Jrkoffjonson PM me is marked as blocked.
(My prior comment was not meant to upset the OP. Just some personal opinion. Removing them now.).
To summarize: proceed with caution as you already guessed what might have happened with your new phone.

T-Mobile was selling this for $199 with free $50 refill twice in the last 2 months.
I don't think "the girl next door" is giving you a good deal at all. Probably something "HOT" she was trying to unload quick. No ebay fee/trace left behind for the authority now that it is your problem.
Good luck ... proceed with caution.

Love when people do this kind of advices...
My final guess is she sell it to me, she report it stolen, bought a S3 with the money and im with a L9 that I use as a tablet...

These days mobile service providers have joined together and sharing centralized IMEI data for any possible criminal activities happening over the phone. Just dont buy any phone from anyone you dont know well. Even if you have bought it from relative may put you in legal issues. Always ask for bill (invoice), warranty card and box, even if warranty is over.
Just imagine that "girl next door" also does not know that the phone is used for illegal activities (drugs/terrorism) and may be thats the reason the phone IMEI might have been blocked and is still traced by International Investigation Agencies, then what? You might have saved some dollars at the cost of your fortune. So beware. Dont do this again. These days we are all wired and easily traceable.

@Jrkoffjonson, Which site you checked for blocked IMEI?
I was looking into straight talk but dont know if is also a t-mobile network. I unlock the phone for $8 so Im happy.
Im not sure if this is where I should be asking this question but I have searched the threads and cant really find the answers Im looking for so here goes and Im going to run through my whole scenario. I have acct with verizon with 2 "dumb phones" on it. I am doing an AOL shortly to aquire a Unlimited data acct. I purchased a used Verizon Galaxy S4 a while back which I was going to switch to Straight talk but decided to get the Unlimited instead (no options where I live) so I have been basically using as a tablet since. When I first bought the phone I checked the MIED and ESN on line as well as if reported lost/stolen...all came up good. Then I called Verizon to check and was told it was good and clear. As I said I have been using for a bit as a tab while I figured what I was going to do. Now that I have found an Unlimited and will aquire it shortly I called Verizon again to make sure all is good and can just activate phone when I get other acct. They told me #s are good and clear but phone is still active on another acct. How can this be? I have had it for at least a few months...what can I do to clear this? Can I simply pop in the sim from the Unlimited acct I am getting or can I get a cheap 4G LTE phone, activate it and then pop sim in the S4? NEED SOME ADVICE HERE! Thanks.

Unless it's been reported lost/stolen you should be able to just put in the sim. When I bought a used S4 all I had to do was put in the sim from my older verizon lte phone and it switched over fine.

Im getting the unlimited acct..but right now I just have 2 basic lines on my acct. The other account Im doing an AOL on I am not getting the phone with but he said he will give me the Sim. What if they sell that phone or switch it to a different acct...will that kill that even if I have put it into another phone? Sorry, just new to switching all this stuff around.

Sims are tied to accounts, so if you're getting the account and the sim it should work in any clean verizon lte phone. I can't be 100% sure on that of course, but I'm fairly certain it will work fine.
