Yes, but it's probably not going to end well.

I do that very much often. No problem at all. But there are "mismatch" chances (as K900 said). I'm not talking about md5 mismatch, but it's the mismatch of files and apps that get updated on a latest 'data' backup rather than on an old 'system' backup.
Result? It might end in fc/misbehaving/deleting the app files and just showing a temporary icon.

Ok thanks I'll see what happens. Lol

What should I do?

So basically let me try to make this clear:
I bought a HTC thunderbolt already running bolted0.35.
I returned to stock and rooted(made a backup of bolted), installed cwm, s-offed. I'm on 1.12.605.6
Can I restore that backup? I'm pretty sure that backup was on 1.12.605.9
If not, what should I do? I'm fully rooted and everything as mentioned

Restoring a backup will replace everything in that backup, no need to clear cache or anything, a mirror image you can say.

[Q] What recovery can recover to a new identical phone?

I made a recovery using TWRP 2.x but it will not allow me to restore to a replacement phone. What recovery can? Can EXT4?
If you made the backup with twrp, then you have to restore with twrp.

Just asking, but are you sure you have the exact same options checked (wimax, system, etc) as you had when you made the backup?
I would also have it make a backup of the existing software, to make sure it generates the correct file structure on the SD card, and then copy the one you want to restore onto the phone. The backups should be in folders sorted by date if memory serves, so I would copy the entire folder to the new device.
I might also try by un-checking the "enable MD5 checking of backups files" box.
Good luck,

As a rule of thumb. It is not a good idea to restore nandroids from 1 phone to another. Consider yourself lucky that you've failed.

Lol.... I didn't say it couldn't be done. I said it shouldn't be done. Nandroids contain device specific data, and really shouldn't be interchanged.

You ask all the time it seems... And yes! There is the built in backup app and there is titanium backup.
And dont flash your phone to much... You will get bad sectors... Or brick it.
Read a little in the forum before asking about everything

Flashing a device never creates bad sectors nor bricks a phone mate.

Yes, but it's a good practice to keep a cwm backup always before flashing.
Cwm backup means..
What n all does it backups
Sorry for noon question
Sent from my Xperia S using xda app-developers app
sony back up - default restore and back up program of sony (included in the firmware)
titanium - back up system and data same like sony restore and back up apps, but with more options. (with free and paid app from google play), can be used to restore single file.
clockworkmod (cwm) backup - back up of system, boot and data ( these are done in recovery), can be used to restore system only or data only or boot only.
1. cwm (if you are flashing roms) - really need this back up in case of error or not booting
2. titanium if you are restoring single file or freezing apps or converting apps to system apps.

No question is Noob brother!
Cwm is short for ClockWorkMod Recovery by Koush.
After installing a custom kernel you get this recovery. When the phone boots (if you have ulbl) you get a vibe+blue led+white glowing illumination strip all at once... Hit volume up rocker once.
You'll enter cwm.
If you choose backup option from there... It backs up your system, boot, cache, data.
In case of any mistakes or something in future you can always enter cwm and choose restore to bring your phone back to the previous state.
You can go to advanced restore and choose either system/boot/cache/data or all.
Thank... if helpful...

[Q] can't call or send messages!

I've changed some ROMS yesterday, from 4.1.2 to 4.2.1, like i always do im doing a full wipe.
after the phone has booted with the new ROM, i noticed that there is no connection-i can't call or send messages. only emergancy.
i have 2 backups, so i restored them..and my phone still doesn't have a connection..
I dont think its a SIM problem, coz my connection was fine before..

All files in /efs are important. Always keep a copy outside your phone. There are apps in the Play Store that help you do backup of /efs.

I think i already have the files you're talking about. ("efsbackup.tar.gz" and "efsdev-mmcblk0p1.img.gz")
I just dont know if these are the right files, because i have another pair of the exact files, with the same name-but their size is bigger IN LIKE MORE 30-40 KB.

Restoring factory means the apps and data on phone (not sd card) will be erased automatically.... And backed up with stock apps....
