Ah crap shattered screen?! - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So I have a shattered screen on my HTC Evo LTE. (finally after about 6 drops on concrete)
I am more then happy to try and replace it myself. While looking the internet over it looks as if the HTC One X's screen is similar if not identical to the LTEvo. Is this true? When I look on Amazon for the screen I find that most of the screens fit say HTC One X/HTC Evo 4G LTE.
I just wanted to make sure first before I make a purchase! Thank all.
If anyone has pointers, please feel free to chime in!!!
PS the screen and phone still works, it is just the outer glass that broke, so I am not in a hurry and am doing my research.

They are very tough to find at the moment from most suppliers. I know there are some on ebay here and there. I know someone with a few, but more so a private vendor.
I would not get a one x screen, you never know if any of the flex cables are different and be a useless purchase.

Thanks! I will keep on researching.

Oh man, not a fun shatter. The first week the SIII came out, we had 4 people bring them in to get fixed, the screen alone is around 250 at least if you can find it.

Screen protectors are slightly different between the 2 and u can notice the difference. The LTEVO is more square so u need one made for the evo 4G ltenot the one x

There are some people on xd a that'll sell them. Got mine for $60. Just learn how to install it before you break your phone.

I recently had the same experience. I ordered an allegedly OEM digitizer+LCD assembly from etradesupply (around $110) and had it installed by a local shop. Unfortunately, it's not perfect. Dust has gotten under the screen, the digitizer seems less sensitive, it attracts more fingerprints/smudges, and I've just noticed a stuck pixel. I wish I would've paid extra and gone with an official HTC repair.

I bought a replacement non OEM LCD from amazon for 55$ its better than original. I installed it my self and reused the digitizer. I am very happy with results, plus I don't think I could have done it for less $.

my randomly cracked along the bottom, one streak in the diagonal corner and one branching off along the bottom of the phone... it wasn't dropped or anything which is strange.

Will a screen protector cause issues with viewing 3D content?

I wonder if adding a screen protector to the Evo 3D will cause issues with viewing 3D pictures/videos/movies. Maybe not, but still something to think about...

Not probable

I never understood screen protectors... I've had a release day HeroC and never had any screen issues. (Same with ol' wifey)
IMO, screen protectors look okay for a week or two then either come off at the corners or have small circles of non-contact. Either way, I think they aren't necessary and may even decrease touch screen sensitivity.
IMO, they obviously have thought of screen protection in the building of the phones. But I guess if you like the belt-&-suspenders look by all means play on, Playa.
EDIT- we also have two daughters that tinker with the phones with who knows what all over their little hands. Still no screen problems ever.

there was a good post over at phandroid about screen protectors. Doesn't get into the 3D question but still worth a read.

I'm not looking to get one of the cheap ones. I'll be getting one with the anti-glare that doesn't leave finger prints and what not. I just know it's a little different, and I wonder if it will cause issues. We'll just have to wait and see. Either way, I can use my phone without a screen protector. Been doing it for years, but I'd like to invest in a nice anti-glare cover.

new owner

hi guys,
getting my new evo3d on wednesday. Just upgraded from my beloved hd2 which i had for 2 years. She was a beaut. This forum its members and developers were a pure godsend.
However, after seeing this phone on offer for £229 it felt wrong not to buy it. So hopefully you guys will help me get the most out of this new phone as i did out of my old.
cheers.
Indeed, mine should be arriving Thursday from Asda. The wife is getting my Desire.
Step one for me is to go into the clean room at work and apply my screen protector lol
Step two I guess is to charge and get sense setup how I like it
Welcome fellas

howdy mr paul. it was too good a deal to turn down, eh?
regarding the protector i always had murders applying my old ones. I found the best way was in a steamy bathroom clean the screen as best as possible with the cloth and then blow on the screen to remove any residual dirt/dust fragments whilst laying the protector on.
You are right about sense. the amount of times i had to redo it with all the wonderful roms on my old phone.
edit - thanks jay.
Welcome aboard indeed. Coming from those phones you should find everything fairly easy here. Solid guides in the dev roll up sticky to get started.

you should look up a company called ghost armor
polyurethane screen protector, so thin you don't even know it's there.
if you know anything about polyurethane, it's tensile strength, and other applications it is used for... you will see why it is by far the best form of screen protector out there.
thanks sarge.
@cobraboy85 that ghost armour is that the same stuff as the zagg invisible shield? I tried that on my hd2 but i could not fit it properly. If it is more a case and a screen protector then it sounds great.

I've use 2 brands all the time and have no complaints.
First is the more durable skinomi one I used on my EVO4G. http://www.skinomi.com/
That thing could take a serious beating and you can't beat the warranty.
The next is what I have on my phone right now and thats the SGP Steinheil screen protector.
http://www.spigen.com/cell-phone/htc.html
The later was easier to install and a little thinner btw.
I used to use screen protectors religiously for a couple of years but never used one on my Evo 4G nor my 3D. Have never had a scratch on the screen. The screen protectors always seemed to take away from the feel of the phone for me. Just my 2cents, try it without one.
I use the matte ones that a finger-print resistant. However; I just recently removed it because I ordered 4 new ones, and I'm liking the way my screen looks without it. Much nicer.
I always use Martin Fields screen protectors, always found them to be fantastic.
Yes the Asda deal is bloody great!
Im also coming over from a HD2 because of the ASDA deal.
I love the HD2 and how that has evolved over the last 18 months, just hope the EVO 3D will be just as great an investment.
Hopefully with the price drop of the EVO 3D GSM and the flood of new owners, development will really start to boom, who knows may even surpass the CDMA forum
Looks like there are some great devs producing some fantastic ROMS already. In addition, we have ICS potentially on the horizon!!
Happy Days ahead one hopes

[Q] Dust Under My Screen, The Last Straw

I wish I didn't have such a perfectionist mind and be crazy about the smallest imperfections, but really HTC, you need to get your **** together. I upgraded to the Evo3D because I had replaced my Evo4G screen 2 times already because of issues with dust and had my hopes very high that by upgrading to the 3D I might finally be able to avoid the problem. Little did I know, I was mistaken. I lurked for many days for some insight into the whole dust situation before even buying the Evo3D and could only find rare occurences so I figured I should be fine. 2 Months later I have one spec of dust. I said okay, its small enough that maybe I can let this one go, but then today I noticed 5 pieces total. This is a quality control issue and I have tried going to the repair center for sprint and they said it was not covered under the TEP plan. What bull****, and HTC wont fix it either. I'm in no mood to fight this issue with them again that this is a manufacturing defect so I decided I'm going to leave the HTC scene. I really regret to even resort to this but I'm very heavily contemplating an iPhone 4, mainly because of the build quality, and the fact that the screens are all on top of one another, there are no open spaces between any of the sheets of glass, therefore there is no room for dust to squeeze its way in there.
If anyone has any way to get the dust out before I jump ship, or rip my head off, please give me some insight. I really love the android community, and it's been very good to me. Thanks in advance.

Let me rephrase this in the form of a question, Alex. (I actually am interested in the answer because I can't read my clock on sunny days due to the dust.)

I only had this problem with my HERO. Got it replaced for free, no questions asked. Had the EVO 3D since launch-day. Not a single speck of dust under my screen. I'm not sure how people are doing this, but I'm beginning to think it's the way people treat their phones. The HERO I had was bought from a friend. I take VERY good care of all my phones, and never have these problems. I don't even use a case on my phone. At most, a matte screen protector.
But in all honesty, you probably should've sprung for the TEP plan. I recommend EVERYONE getting it. And if you get an iPhone, you CAN'T get it through Sprint. You'll have to buy Apple One Care, which I think turns out to be more expensive (I may be wrong).

Lifted it out ... after getting it super hot to make the adhesive gooey, right? I've actually built an EVO 3D from parts laying around, and other parts I ordered online. I don't recommend anyone else do this, it was brutal, but it works 100%.
The other big lesson I learned from ordering on-line: While the website may say: "Brand new parts" they may arrive and you find they are brand new, but did not actually pass quality standards in the factory! The 3D I built has tiny, hair-line scratches in the digitizer! Most time you never notice, but "Brand new parts" doesn't actually give you the full story.
Sorry, ranting here.

My phone has a dust spray on the bottom right corner. Been there since I bought. I'm living with it now since it's out of the way and doesn't usually bother me. But I agree that it's terrible that the phone was shipped this way. I do have Sprint TEP plan but been too lazy to go in.
I've had two HTC phones and do really like them but I'm moving to a Samsung next time for sure. Probably replace this before I buy a new one then sell it. HTC phones are beginning to all look too much the same. Time to move on.
I have the cheap $4 (not including the damage loss) TEP but:
1) I don't want to lose my 1.4 bootloader and get a lousy reman unit.
2) since a bunch of updates (thanks, freeza), it has stopped rebooting at random, which was the only reason I got TEP in the first place
I fear that blowing air in the left side (headphone jack) might move the forest (presently in the upper right) downward, not just rightward. I'm tempted to cancel the TEP and just break it open for a proper cleaning.
I think this was a qc issue. My old evo was 100% clean under the screen. This 3d, after fewer months in the same environment) looks like a freaking dryer vent.

Question about zagg warranty and customer service.

I just finally installed my zagg invisible shield HD on my EVO and am curious about there "Warranty". Had anyone ever had to get another one and why? I bought mine around the end of May and believe I have the old one that supposively covers up the light sensor but mine does not have this problem. Are they quick to send you a new one like otterbox is with there cases?
SENT FROM MY EVO 4G LTE!!! (w/no LTE)
I bought one around when the phone came out at Best Buy and had their mobile guy install it. He did it flawlessly.
A few weeks later I had put a cut in it somehow when rubbing my shirt on the screen to clean it obsessively. Maybe dirt got between my thumb/the shirt/the screen and I mashed it into the screen protectors - I don't know.
Anyhow, I went to the website and payed the $3 shipping charge and 2 days later I got a new Zagg kit. I took it to Best Buy and was going to pay them money to do install again, but they did it for free. This time different guy and there are two tiny specs on the screen protector, maybe dust under the screen protector. Didn't catch it in the store since it takes 2 days to "cure" correctly.
So the warranty process works great, but now I have to live with these tiny specs on my screen and it drives me completely insane for some reason.. :cyclops:
The new kit came with a return envelope, but you need to slap a stamp (or two?) on it. I sent it back but haven't gotten credit for sending it back yet, so I hope they don't charge my card for the full cost of the screen protector
That's pretty good. I installed it pretty good also there's just 2 finger prints on the inside by the buttons. As long as the screen is flawless I'm happy but I wonder if the prints will come out in the days it needs to "cure" along with a few air bubbles?
SENT FROM MY EVO 4G LTE!!! (w/no LTE)
I did the same thing a while back for my old phone. Once you register your shield at Zagg's website (which can be done at any time) you have the option of having them send you one then and there. It takes a few days for them to ship you the replacement.
The actual warranty process is pretty straight forward. They put a 15 dollar hold on a debit or credit card and mail you a new one. As long as you mail the old one back they remove the hold from your card. However, they only give you 60 days to send back your old shield, otherwise they keep the 15 dollars.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
The finger prints will probably go away. Two days for complete cure, but hopefully you see the fingerprints start to fade soon. The screen will be gummy for a day or two it seems. It gets slicker later on, but always has some texture to it.
So yeah, if you still have fingerprints in a week, you may have issues. The spray solution should do its job, hopefully!
I had to replace one on my EVO 4G because the edges were starting to come up a bit. Process went pretty smoothly, but for some reason the original one that I tried to send back was returned to sender by the [sarcasm]wonderful[/sarcasm] post office. As such, they charged me $15, but when I called and emailed a picture of the returned envelope (with their correct address, as they even noted), they refunded the difference and didn't even ask me to try to return it again.
Sounds good.I took off the screen protector on my otterbox defender and it seems like because the case is so tight to the phone is making the edges of the protector come up. It's still covered up by the case so idc. I just was curious over time if I could land another one and by the great responses in this thread you reassured me I purchased quality merchandise. Thanks everyone.

Cracked screen badly

Hey, so I cracked my One X+ screen quite badly, it fell on it's side on a wood floor, and it cracked.
Thing is, this isn't a normal crack, if I put it in my pocket, I end up with pieces of glass everywhere, and if I use it, my fingers get cut and bleed, so I can't use it right now.
I am not a handy guy myself, so I won't even try fixing it, I've been checking out some places, they seem decent, but they mostly do iPhone repairs. One of them quoted me $150, and another $130
The $150 has a 5-star yelp rating, but then again, iPhone screens (from what I know) are fairly easy to replace
I'm so pissed at myself, because I never wanted to use a case, as the phone is really sexy and feels good.
I e-mailed corning for the gorilla glass damage, which was weird, and they said that they will pay me $200 for the phone and they will (obviously) keep it for research (Probably replace the screen and sell it?)
I'm so worried, because after reading around, it seems that HTC One X screens never end up looking good, and I can imagine that being worse for the X+, as it is a bit more rare.
The screen is cracked on the side, and those cracks extend all the way to the other side of the phone, but on the left side, the glass is just destroyed.
Will post pics later
Wow, that sucks bud. I broke the screen on my SGSII last year and just chucked it and bought a phone on E-bay.
I replaced the screen on an I-pod and it was pretty simple. I did a lot of research before I did it and it turned out good.
I don't know what to tell you as far as replacement. If you got $200.00 for the broken one and could find one on E-bay for $450.00, you would have a replacement for $250.00. Just a thought.
Best of luck and post some picks when you can.
Steve

I spose if you found someone qualified to do the repair, it should be like new when it's done. Be sure they use a good quality screen and digitizer for the repair. Should even consider using a direct HTC replacement. Of course that will up your cost.
I spose it depends on what you are willing to do for your phone. How bad do you want your HOX+ back??
I would just send it to HTC, cost me 180 british pounds, the good side is that you will get a new unibody, and a full service on the insides of the phone. I think its well worth it, and it keeps your warranty in play.

I don't care much about the warranty, if it dies I'll replace it, thing is, I can get upto $150, since I'm a high school kid, and (this is serious!) my parents said that if I break my phone, they're not replacing my phone in the next 2 years.
So they don't know.

The One X and One X + are definitely a difficult replacement. You need to FULLY clean up the old adhesive and take your time or you will get bad results. You also need to use the right adhesives to get good results. It would cost about $10 to $15 to get a role of adhesive you could use (trimming needed in tight areas) that would do about 50 phones.
Take your time and be thorough. Also be REALLY carefull with all the flex cables or you will be screwed when you put it back together.
I have fixed about 25 of the One X and one One X+ and its a minimum of 1.5 hours of work for me now and I know exactly what to do.
