Im very new to android and was very surprised that the GS 3 was giving me lower than expected framerates when playing NOVA 3. I wrongly expected that the phone would be able to run all games at 60fps. bad NOVA 3 seems to run at between 40fps - 60fps...... very rarely staying at a constant 60fps. or is it just my phone?? i have noticed the same with riptide too. most of the time it is very smooth but when all of the jets are on the screen at the same time the framerate drops... so im really hoping that jelly bean will help to fix this or not???
Why dont you get an iphone if you are not satisfied with the best PHONE
JellyBean is not a MIRACLE that it will make fastest phone more faasstest!

To answer your question in simple terms, No Jelly Bean will not increase the performance of gaming on the S3.
Project Butter enables VSYNC for window transitions and animations in the operating system, meaning that the FPS is increased to a constant 60FPS. Obviously other things are done so that the devices can handle this change, but this is what happens at basic level. For this to be incorporated into games, you will have to get the developer to make the same changes and make it work effectively with your phone's hardware.
But no, project butter only affects the Android OS animations, and not gaming.
Someone is welcome to correct me if I am wrong and I will change this post accordingly.
If i wanted to get an iphone i would have got one instead of the S3. i know that jelly bean improves the fps of the ui to 60fps, but what i wanted to know if anyone knows is will jeyy bean also improve the framerate of games?
Consequently No.

thanks DarkRyoushii. all i needed to know!
This is completely incorrect, sorta? If you install Nova Launcher, it's essentially a game. I know you don't play it, but it's an application that does exactly the same as a game, uses your phones CPU and RAM. Project Butter works by ramping up the CPU each and every time the screen is touched in all aspects of the OS, be gaming or custom launcher. This may not increase the speed of a game or improve it, because it's mainly more responsive to touch so I'm not too sure about that bit.

Will this jellybean allow us to move apps/games to external sd?

I experience the same choppiness on riptide. It really kills the experience.

Even more annoying thing is: the US GS3 doesn't seem to suffer the same problem even with it's crappy Adreno 225.

JB is a new version of an operating system, it changes nothing in the layout of the filesystem.
You can, with some manual work and root, already move the apps to the external sd.
I'm sure someont will make an app for that but for now it's as good as it can get

Higher frame-rates and more aggressive cpu scaling won't increase battery life.
I differ from all who said it doesnt improve on games. Games that used to be laggy on my nexus with ics now play smoothly on jellybean
Ugghhh, So many misinformed people. The reason games don't play smoothly is because they're not optimized to fit with the modified mali400 gpu. Give it time, games will be optimized. Hell nova3 runs like butter on my s2 and the gpu is similar. It is possible for an os to increase gpu performance, ics saw a 20% improvement over gb. But i doubt they changed Amy code dealing with that for jb.

No, it will not.
The reason games are smoother and faster on the iPhone compared to the S3 is the same reason why PS3 games are smoother than the latest and fastest pcs. It's because games are optimised specifically for the iPhone, while android games are all lousy ports.
To have a game run super well on the s3, we'll need to hope for a Mali-optimised game, which won't happen any time soon, considering the influence of ios and tegra.
Yes it will improve the framerate somehow. In theory it shouldn't but it does.
For example, before Samsung Galaxy S2 got the ICS update, on Nenamark 2 it only achieved around 47fps, now with 53fps with ICS update.
Another example would be the Nexus 7, while it has a Tegra 3 built in, it's GPU is a lower clock at 427Mhz (Something like that) and achieves 55fps on Nenamark 2 compared to Asus Transformer Prime with a higher clock GPU (533Mhz) and only achieving around 48fps. (Both have same resolution, but different Android OS, Jelly Bean vs Ice Cream Sandwich).
I'll be getting the Galaxy S3 (Again) but the blue version (Grey-ish really), but I remember that Nova 3 and Riptide (With Tegra effects) played smoothly on Siyahkernel v1.2.x, I don't know now, but give it a try.
It won't necessarily require JB to make games run faster. It'll require Samsung to provide updated drivers for the Mali GPU. Whether that comes with an ICS or a JB update is irrelevant.
Hi all.
There has been talk about Jelly Bean providing lower audio latency. I have flashed to cm10 and the latency using Caustic is 144ms. Can I ask users of both ICS and jelly bean ROMs on the i9300 what their latency is using the help menu on Caustic? Its a free demo from Google play.
If no one on Jelly Bean has lower latency then it might be worth researching a patch ( one is available for the galaxy nexus ) to see if it could be built for the i9300.
Thanks
Muso
93ms , I'm on android revolution hd.
Running a stock-based ICS ROM (Omega 13.1) and my latency is 93 ms. Have you tried a Sammy JB ROM? Maybe your high latency is just related to CM10.
I'm running stock Samsung Jelly Bean I9300XXDLIH updated via OTA and I have the same audio latency, 93ms.
That is the exact same latency I had with stock ICS!
So, after all what was said about jelly bean audio improvement I'm really diasappointed.
All I have noticed is just a little improvement in touch response but nothing so exiting as I expected from this update!
I had some hopes to finally see some quality real time guitar effects in my S3 but I start thinking this is a hopeless matter!!!
Unfortunately it seems not much people is missing some great Iphone music apps enough to make Google take seriously care about it!
I'm also very interested in lower latency on my s3... hope there will be a solution in the near future.
Mind if i ask in what way does lower or higher audio latency affect the phone?? because ive been experiencing some echo in my calls (JB 4.1.1) and i dont know if this is related.
sry for the noob question
I'm on my my second sghi777, on my first phone I never had a problem overclocking as high as 1600mhz on cm7. Now on my new phone I can't seem to overclock past 1400mhz without freezing issues, I have been using ics and jb roms but other than that there the same phones. Anyone have any insight to why I'm having issues? I'm currently using jellybam with siyah 4.3.3
All phones are different. All within limits but still different.
I run mine at 800mhz daily, and i see absolutely no reduction in performance. It's really unnecessary to overclock that high. It will run even slower due to how much hotter it gets. The only difference you'll see is in benchmark scores.
I love trying out all the new ICS and JB ROMs on my x10 (which isn't my primary phone) but because of the low frame rate it seems very laggy (probably seems laggier than it actually is)
On the GB ROMs the frame limit was unlocked to 60fps and everything seemed so much more responsive and fluid, is there any way to do this on any of the CM9/CM10 ROMs?
Are we talking FPS in gaming or are we talking about FPS in videos..or are we talking about both?
Or are we talking screen display and scrolling reaction time?
Videos.
FPS2D returns 54FPS on stock GB 2.3.3
FPS2D returns 43FPS on JB 4.1.2 CM10
My understanding is that anything that is not using a standard GB 2.3.3 ROM will not be able to use GPU 2D Hardware Acceleration.
2D HW Acceleration for the XPERIA X10i is not included in any CyanogenMod Build and I don't know off any other ICS of JB build that has HW acceleration enabled for the XPERIA X10i.
This means outside of the stock GB 2.3.3 ROM playing a .mkv 720p (H264,AC3) video would be worse in JB and ICS than on stock GB 2.3.3
A JB and ICS build uses the CPU to provide the video encoding only and does not solicit the GPU to offload processing to speed up performance/viewing/smoothness/lag.
Gaming
Now this one is less clear(to me).
If I use the Game demo of Epic Citadel as a Benchmark we see the following:
Stock GB 2.3.3 - Epic Citadel: 11.2FPS on performance
CM10 JB 4.1.2 - Epic Citadel: 11FPS on performance
So there is nothing in it.
Some gaming engines can make use of Adreno 200 GPU hardware features like hardware floating point and etc, but it's not clear if they do or not.
I can play Modern Combat 4 on my GB 2.3.3 (DoomKernel v6) XPERIA X10i. For me there is noticeable lag at points, but still very playable if you're not planning to upgrade to a new phone (XPERIA V) any time soon.
I have not attempted to play MC4 on JB or ICS XPERIA X10i ROM.
Note - MC4 plays a little bit better on an XPERIA LT26i with Overclocked CPU and Overclocked GPU though.
Summary
My understanding is that there is no GPU HW features available on any XPERIA X10i ROM for the Adreno 200 GPU outside of the Stock GB 2.3.3 ROM.
Hey guys,
I just installed the 4.27 CM10.1 nightly + Matrix Kernel and absolutely love it, props to those teams, incredible work.
I'm trying to compare GPU performance across AOSP/AOKP landscape, and would love feedback on the relationship between GPU performance and ROM choice. I believe the GPU driver is held in the kernel, so does rom choice impact GPU performance at all?
Why I ask:
I noticed that I have across-the-board higher bench scores scores on CM10.1 than I did with TW based roms, except with regard to GPU performance. The general UI experience is fantastic with CM10.1, but I have noticed an area of weakness, for example hovering over Flipboard tiles results in a choppy reveal animation compared to TW.
In summary: I'm extremely impressed with CM10.1, but am new to AOSP roms, and wish to understand more about the relationship between roms and hardware utilization efficiency.
