Hi all - I've flashed the Super Clean ROM v0.4 by jt1134, but I'm finding that I much preferred the stock music player, and noticed a lack of "ThinkFree Office" in this release, which got me to thinking;
Is there a place to download optimized, deodexed, zipaligned, [insert optimization buzzword here] apks for every one of the stock apps that were included with the Fascinate? Something we can just adb push onto our customized ROMs after the fact?
Again, I'm thinking mostly of the music app and ThinkFree office (I know I can download a free version... was the stock app the for-pay version, or was it the free "lite" version?), but I know that some people also like the stock mms app, etc.
Thanks!

I was just going to start looking for the deodexed system dump. I, too, miss the stock music player. Anyone got a link, and will it work with JT's rom? And how should we install it? Using a file manager, pushing it with adb, or putting it somewhere with root explorer?
I need this ro try and push the stock market app. The froyo update won't download apps.

Stock music player, messaging app and alarm clock is what is keeping me from using this Rom

I kinda miss being able to skip or replay songs from the dropdown bar.
Having NFS back would be nice too
frostman released a set already:

You can just pull stuff out of the zip.

Or you can DeOdex your system manually I have used this method and it works, Only exception is at step "5. IMPORTANT: After you have run option 3, you MUST navigate to the xUltimate folder and find "origi_frame" folder, and delete "vzwlbs.odex" (instead of this file that does not exist on a Fascinate - "guava.odex".) It's a bad file, and interferes with deodexing process."
I was actually going to request the stock calender apk. The samsung one looks better but takes away too much functionality. I guess they really do like apple haha. I need to know what's next on my schedule without remembering to look for it.
Jt has been slowly adding some of the stock apps as well as some of the AOSP apps to the "extra" folder in ROM manager. I'm guessing if there is enough interest in adding an app he would be willing to provide it. I'm fairly certain that donations to his "beer fund" would help prompt interest.
Jt hangs out in #Samsung-fascinate on freenode a lot, you could *politely* request that he add an app there.
i copied ClockPackage.apk and Mms.apk from frost's rom to /system/app and it all worked. I got back stock versions of both, I believe if you rename DeskClock.apk to DeskClock.apk.bck or delete it you can remove altogether JT's clock.
I wonder where the Verizon stuff is, like the info app that shows you minutes/texts/data used.

I'd like this app as well, if you're able to get it working. I'd try it myself, but I'm at work ATM.
I think its this "I500_MyVerizon_05202010.apk" I saw it in the full system dump. However that dump is not deodexed and from original release. don't know if it would work and don't wanna screw up my system.
You should be able to grab them from a system dump.
The fascinate stock apps that are not included in frosty's zip were never odexed in the first place.
The way frosty's zip to deodex works is by removing the odex files, and replacing the corresponding apk with the deodexed versions.
Can you just take the apk from the dump and install it? I need thinkfree back as well. Does this work or do you have to get the apk and odex file from the dump and paste into the system/app folder?
I remember having a deodexed rom on my D1 and installing apps from the market with no problems. Can I just add the apk to my sdcard and install?
Thanks
I would just copy them to system/app
I do not know if any of them are actually installable if you just run, them on your phone.
If it doesn't have an odex in the system dump, it probably doesn't need one.
I like the file manager "my files" that comes with the stock rom. I might get heat for this, but its nice to have that already installed and or a zip to install via clockwork for other roms.

Thanks. I did not notice an odex so I moved it to system/app and rebooted. Works great. Thanks!
I am looking for a package or apk files that contain the samsung apps. I want my phone to be as stock as possible. I am running a rom that is stock by is missing those apps.
Thanks
If you're looking for "as stock as possible", just reflash the stock JFD thru Odin if you're looking for all the stock apps/TW/etc.
~SB
If i do that will it still be rooted?
Odin'ing to stock means reset of everything.
you still have your files in sd cards..
but no root, no apps etc
There is a package called bloater that has all the apps the phone came with.
Don't look for Bloater in the market though, its not there. Search for it here.
Ditto on the bloater, its great for adding apps that a rom developer might not include in their roms (allshare for me). I actually forgot that bloater was not available on market and wondered why it was not showing up on there.
Thanks. I am using bloater and I am happy now!
More than a little confused by the fact this app is not available for the Streak if you go to Android Market yet it came as part of an official Rom release not too long ago.
Can anyone recommend a good car home app?
From this article:
. . .Car Home - which was initially released for all Froyo-powered phones - has now been locked down to just two smartphones: the Nexus One and Motorola Droid

You can get the apks for car home from the 351 rom. Download the update zip in the 351 folder here and extract it, you can then get whatever apps you need. I am not sure which files it will take.
Edit: you might try changing the fingerprint of your phone to nexus one and see if you can get it from the market. May or may not work.
I like Car Home Ultra by TheSpinningHead
Car home is included by default in all streak stock roms and also should be in all custom roms. It should only be missing if you rooted and deleted it.

I installed 354 last night. I have been renaming apks, not deleting them, and CarHome is not in there. Unless it is someplace other than "system/app".
I can vouch for it being there with 354 because I uninstalled it to install CarHome Ultra. Bit I think its called CarHome Dock... not sure. But its definitely there
Oh wow it seems like 354 is missing car home. I've been using streakdroid since i got mine so I musta missed that. 351 DOES have it bundled though.
Are you sure you saw the google car home in 354? I dont see it in the apk list, could it possibly be a different, non-official car home?
Here's a copy from 351, the version is 2.2.1.5, which is strange as the one on market is 2.2.1.4.
Looking at the files in BB 351 and 354 I do not see the car dock in 354, and in 351 I find CarDock.apk.
Edit: should never double check while the add post window is open. Of course I tripled checked because I didn't think TheManii could be wrong.
I know I need to enable installing non-market apps, but where is the best place to put the file to install it?
Thanks

Just download them anywhere on your SD card (location doesn't matter) Then browse to them using any file manager (Astro or Root Explorer) and tap to install. The 2.2 Car home I linked needs both apk files installed. I think the Car Dock from 351 may be tablet optimized for Streak though (larger icons).
Fyi, I almost always download from my computer into my Dropbox public folder and then install from Dropbox on my phone.
Having played around for a few minutes with the Streak Car Home, anyone who installs the Car Home currently available on the Market is actually downgrading their copy of Car Home. The "New" version of Car Home for the Nexus One and Droid isn't new, and every feature that the "New" Car Home has listed on the Car Home Upgrade Article on Google's Blog is already available in the Streak APK.
The Streak Car Home APK is a higher version number than the version available on the Market, which means to me there are bug fixes in the version on the 351 ROM that aren't on the official app in the Market. Therefore, common sense says to use the APK from the 351 ROM.

Well Manii I can't be 100% positive... I had taken your advice and restored the stock recovery for 351 and flashed 351 pkg, then decided to go with 354 so I flashed that... THEN I flashed StreakMod and 1.9.1... and CarHome was there, so I guess it could have possibly been a remnant of the 351 package...
Now, I'm in Costa Rica and even though I use either of the Market Enablers, I don't see the CarHome y'all are talking about in the Market.
Have any of you tried the CarHome Ultra by Spinning Head to give me a comparison. I have never used the bundled Streak CarHome, I have always deleted it right off the bat.

This is the second time today that I have seen where 351 was recommended over 354. Can someone please explain why? I'm not one of those who automatically assumes the newest is the bestest, but aren't they both 2.2.2? What is different that makes one preferable over the other as a starting point for someone who is going to gut it anyway?

Well, the end of that same statement I also mentioned I flashed 354 package right on top of the 351. NOW, the reason I did that is because StreakDroid 1.9.1 I believe is built off of 354, so for stability's sake I flashed with 354 before SD 1.9.1.
I have no idea what the technical differences between 351 and 354 are except that 351 was the US release and 354 was the HongKong release. Hopefully TheManii or marvin02 or someone more knowledgeable in that aspect can answer your question.
The first time I flashed 351 I did put SD 1.9.1 on top of it, after flashing 354 and then putting SD 1.9.1 on top of it, I can't really tell any difference.
What I can tell you is flashing the update.pkg insted of just the amss and dsp1 for each build made a world of difference
354 is customized for the region (Hong Kong). From reading posts here it has less support for alternate languages. I haven't been able to find any details on other differences. I have stayed with the more generic 351.
It seems to have less bloatware than 351, but unless I have the situation confused, 354's code is also a few hours older than the code for 351 as well as using an older version of the Stage UI.
Courtesy of WinMerge I have attached a file that shows the differences between the apps in 351 and 354. It is an html file renamed to txt so that I could attach it, DL and rename it if you are interested.
That's a very telling document.

It's a bit misleading as dell will bump the internal version identifier with each new rom that they udpate. Even if the apk itself has had no real changes.
I usually recommend 351 as it has StageUI 1.6
351 and 364: StageUI 1.6
All other froyo roms: StageUI 1.5
They put the newest stuff in 351, and stuff that was made after used older code. StageUI is just the really obvious/easy to spot difference. I'd imagine there's other changes under the hood.
You could compare it similarly to: Fresh install of windows 7 RTM vs a fully patched copy of windows XP SP3. The win7 is a bit older as it launched over a year ago and xp is still recieving patches. But obviously win7 is still the newer of the two even if you use the year old unpatched version.
As for carhome itself: I dont know what's going on with the 2 apks vs 1 apk. It seems like older versions required 2 apks, 1 is the car home app itself, and one is the launcher shortcut that appears in the app drawer.
The one in 351 seems to combine both of them into a single apk. As my current rom only has the carhome.apk i linked to and not the other one, and it works correctly with no issues.
i am currently building a rom for the samsung captivate built off 2.3.5.
The base im using is stock - deodexed/ ziped / minorly changed
this base flashes and works just fine!
what i am doing to it:
remove bloat.
- at&t apps,
- protips.apk
- remove broken swype
- remove stock email (not gmail)
- removed stock launcher
change to hacked camera.apk
remove bootsound
remove shutdown sound
change bootanimation
added user apps in data/apps
added widget picker in system/app
changed default wallpaper in framework_res.apk
changed install script
changed CSC
custom twwallpaperchooser
everything works fine through the install.
but durring the "setup" on first boot " phone setup wizard " will force close right at the step where you setup your google sign in.
BUT THATS NOT THE PROBLEM, (just the first sign of it)
the real problem is any apps installed after flashing do not show up in data/apps
any apps installed through the flash are there, but any installed after ARENT.
and no they arent on the SD card.
the apps will slowly disappear after installing one by one.
when i reboot THEY ALL DISAPPEAR!!!
it seems that the apps install to cache or memory.
as the memory gets cleared or you reboot, they get wiped away!
i have tried various things to fix this
i have rebuilt my rom MANY times.
with and without my framework res changed file
with and without my custom install script
with and without removing stock launcher
with and without changed CSC files.
with and without twwallpaperchooser
if i flash the base i was working from again, all is good.
this only seems to be an issue when i flash data/apps from the zip file. however i have used a script from a rom that successfully flashed data/apps before without this issue, so i do not think it is a permission problem....
im stuck and lost.
more specific, rewritten description i emailed to a few friends
holy hell i bet youve been busy...
me too, i finally have my rom built. for KH2 KJ1 and KJ2 !!
have it down to an easy process now. install script working!
but im having one final issue and cant find any useful info on it anywhere and its very specific
**I know KJ1 and KJ2 install any app to the SD if possible by default. any app on SD will not be affected by this issue ***until it is moved to phone
if I build my rom to install apps to data/app (through cwm flash )- any app that gets installed after (through market or sideload) will slowly disappear after some use or immediately after reboot. they also will not show up in data/app or system/app when installed ** once again not including apps on SD. and if apps on SD are moved to data/app they do not end up there. they disappear.
this leads me to beleive that they are installing to cache or memory, as the memory gets cleared or the phone reboots. they are gone!
if i build my rom without user /data/apps (and without that part of the script).
everything is fine. any app installed after shows up in data/app and is still there after reboot.
i have also used unmodified scripts with and without the package_extract ("data", "/data")
that have been known to work with the original rom they were taken from. without the issue i am seeing.
so i do not think it is a script / permission issue not allowing the system to write new data to that location. but i could be wrong.
my rom is ready for release once i can get this last part figured out. otherwise ill have to release with no user apps... any input would be greatly appreciated.
thanks again!

one search i came across mentioned something about possibly not being converted to rfs, but I have flashed to stock with re-partitioning ( rfs for sure ) and the rom and kernel i am building does not support it so that shouldn't be an issue.
from what other rom builders have told me this is an issue with gingerbread roms.
have apps copied to SD card and ask users to install manually.

I tried to rename and move and delete the calendar app on CM7.2 rom, but root explorer and all other won't let me. It says it is only readable. I googled and didn't find anything. I pulled the calendar apk file off my other rom. It's the best calendar app I've seen so far. Is there a way to back up the photon with nandroid then somehow unzip it and replace the app and rezip and reflash? Something simpler would be nice.
Did you mount the system as writable (its in the settings of ES File Explorer, but might be somewhere else on other apps)

Ok awesome it worked after I did what you said, thank you. I put the calendar app I took of my other rom and put it in the app folder and fixed permissions and rebooted, but it didn't show up when I looked at apps. I went to the app folder and clicked on it said "failed to install" after attempting to install. Maybe I'm not doing it correctly. How should I take an app from another rom and install it?
Stock apps, specifically, are very finicky with regards to version. If you are trying to use a 2.3.4 version on 2.3.5, for example, it may be more complicated than simply copying over and fixing permissions...there may be some dependancies on other files (systemui.apk or framework-res.apk for example). You are now exceeding my knowledge level with this topic...sorry.

Do you think the new apps will be more optimized for ICS and not backward compatible?
Eventually that will be so, but right now, over 60% of the Android Community is running Gingerbread... A Developer would be stupid not to allow Gingerbread use.... ie. Google with Google Chrome Beta..... but for now, most will work from ICS down and Gingerbread and up.....
Not too many apps are being made for below Gingerbread... my point is --- you should be fine, nothing to worry about, also, most gingerbread apps are compatible with ICS, so again remember that and the fact that only about 1-3% of the Android Community is running ICS....
