Pretty sure its just a generic code that is in every build even when the phone doesn't have it. If you do *#*#4636#*#* and scroll down (in radio settings) there are also settings for LTE, which the i9300 obviously does not have.

That code does not work o my GS3
:crying:

You can access that menu from battery monitor widget. Click on tests. I can't get to it from the secret code either.

[Q] Firmware Band Selection

Guys,
I am about to received my SGS 2 tomorrow.
I am in Australia on a 850mhz 3g (read not GSM) network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_G)
I know the phone supports this band, but I see some region firmwares floating around and am wondering if ALL firmwares support this band? Or is firmware specific.
Thanks guys.
Im on VR1.1 with everything else stock and next g is cool with me. Preordered from UK so mines from release.

Can I ask how you know your on Next G and not just 3g?
You can use non 850mhz Bands with Telstra and get std 3g.
Well im just assuming. But where i live all my family get 1bar with optus/3/voda whereas i get full bars. If u have a way for me to check ill have a look

not really sure how to check, the best I could figure out is install Network Info II and check network type
Should be HSDPA/UMTS?
I cant seem to find any tool to tell you exact frequency the phone is using.
It is not firmware dependent (If someone buys a Vodaphone branded SGS2 it is still going to work with NextG, but it will probably just be SIM locked). NextG is HSPA noted by the 'H+' symbol. When I was on Three is was just 'H' which is HSPDA.
If you dial *#*#4636#*#* and go phone information -> menu key -> Select Radio Band -> AUS2 Band
AUS2 is NextG 850Mhz, so if you get internet access on that, it is running NextG. The Phone Information section will also tell you your current network protocol also. If it is reporting UMTS then click the 'run ping test' button, it will flick over to HSPA
Hspa when data is being used
Umts when data is inactive

Also just rum some speed tests and you'll know if you're on 3g or HSDPA.

thanks guys.
Once it has charged I will put SIM in and test all this, very excited as moving from my HTC Desire
Sorry to dig this post up from the grave, but I'm about to move my SGSii to Telstra, as well.
I was wondering if you found benefit to these changes, and if you've changed anything further since.
Have you found any particular ROM/modem to be better (either in reception or battery life) than others.
And, finally, what sort of battery life do you get? I get about 14 hours before I have to plug it in, but I get terrible reception at work (I'm currently on 3), so I'm thinking that might have something to do with it.
Thanks heaps.

Quick question..... 4G?

Does the Xperia S support 4G when it comes out?
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
Off course not
For 4g you need a phone capable for that and xps is not

The funny thing is that in the software in the S LTE can be enabled, but there is no LTE hardware.
Type *#*#4636#*#* then select phone info scroll down and where is says (on my phone) wcdma preferred you can select the radio bands incl LTE.
When i set my phone to LTE preferred nothing happens and i stil have wcdma reception

The modem is restricted so you can't change the bands. It's set to switch to the best signal.
The idea of using 2G to save battery consumption is a wives tale. There isn't any difference anymore.
I would hope that's the only reason to want to switch to 2G!
But yeah, with current technology 3G/4G is no longer a battery killer like it once was. Especially on our state of the art awesome Galaxy Notes!
I do not agree with this entirely, because at college I only get 2g all the time! ANd my battery never gets below 75% when I am home it bounces from 3g/4g and even sometimes to 2g I live in a weird area lol...And my battery gets down to 30-35% when I am home doing the same things.....
The modem in the phone is on or off, and it doesn't downshift if it has to run on a lower band. It's like a light bulb -- on or off.
Don't take my word for it, google the topic and you can read what the engineers say.
You can't do the same things with 2G and 4G networks (at least not without pulling your hair out).
I must disagree with you, 2G and 4G switch is available in international GNote. So there is a way to swtch it. And if i am in zone of low 3/4G signal zone, it always switch to 2-3-4 G, so it also make the battery drain faster. In HOX AT&T there is a command you can dial some code and get into menu for switching Bands. There should be somthing like this in Note also.
There is a dial code for this modem but it is a restricted menu. You can't make a selection on it.

To get the option, you would need Samsung modem software and be able to edit the file and unrestrict the band selector. That is something that has never been leaked, unfortunately.
ranger captain is right, so...
this is what I did:
root
flash T-Mobile modem

not sure if you are using att straight talk though.

That's actually a solution for this OP who wants 2G on Straight Talk network. If he follows your instructions, because of the hardware, all he will be able to get is EDGE connection for data.

[Q] Select 2G network mode in i9305 (S3 LTE/4g)

Does anyone know what network modes can be used on the Galaxy S3 4G?
Can I select 4G only, 3G only and 2G only?
Existing 3G phones have the options in the settings menu to use "2g networks" only.
I was wondering if there same exists for the i9305.
I thinking of getting one and it would help knowing if the above can be done.

[Q] How to force Verizon Galaxy S4 to use gsm 2G outside of USA

Hello everybody
My cousin from the USA bring me a Verizon Galaxy S4, I putted a local gsm carrier sim card and it worked fine, I have rooted it and installed hyperdrive on it, but the problem is that it's always on the gsm 3g network which consumes a lot of battery and I can't force it to use the 2g network since this option isn't available unlike the international version of the galaxy s4
Is there any way to force it to use 2g gsm network?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium
Verizon does not use any form of GSM. You are more likely on a CDMA network.

The problem is there is no option to force the phone to use the 2g only like for the i9500
I have installed the liquiezmooth Rop which is Aosp rom and it has this option, then i went back to my nandroid back up and now it use the 2g only !

Download the app from the store called phone info. Open it and select gsm only. This way you'll force the phone to work on 2g(gsm).

Hi,
My uncle has got me a new Verizon S4 from USA in India. He did not turn it on in USA neither he has activated the phone. He simply got me the box packed phone.
I inserted an Indian GSM SIM card and switched it on, it did recognize the service provider and then asked me couple of questions to select languages and all.
However it does not select a Network Operator. My Network operator is Airtel. It shows a List of Local Network Operators but when i select any of them, it says "Registering on selected network operator" but then it fails.
Can some one help me over come it and how i can use this phone in India?
Try to add apn for your provider and chose to search for the network automatically. Should work.
